>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> it's infuriating and it's sad. liz: fourth of july is supposed to be a fundraiser for one group, but it is fizzling because of thieves swiping their fireworks. thanks for joining us -- i'm liz kreutz. let's start by talking about the fourth of july holiday weekend and the weather specifically. let's get over to meteorologist lisa argen. lisa: we always have high fire danger around here, but with moisture in the city we are doing pretty well, and the mist and drizzle wipers this morning.

56 in santa clara with the clouds, 63 in santa rosa. visibility reduced along the san mateo coast, and you can see the drops along the lens from our exploratorium camera. it's on the cool side -- there is another view of mount tam, where upper elevations are in the 50's, and here's a look at the wind -- pretty gusty towards the east bay. as we look at san jose, notice the temperatures are not arming up too much -- warming up too much. mid 70's in our warmest inland valleys, and the breeze kicks up in the house will be leaned to the coast for most of the shoreline. we will talk about the this and warmest day out of the holiday weekend in it you minutes. liz: the holiday weekend is getting off to a rough start one bay area nonprofit after becoming the victim of a burglary. the optimist club of newark

sells fireworks every year with the proceeds going to children in need. >> to have someone take away our livelihood was very is waning. -- very disappointing. run by at optimist club, they sell a variety of fireworks every year. but someone broke into their storage shed and stole order of their inventory. next in net worth, $7,000. >> the theft has left them devastated. all the money they raised this weekend goes to helping towards disadvantaged -- helping disadvantaged and disabled youth. >> scholarships to north memorial for graduate seniors, special ed, a christmas party with santa. >> but it's not just the

immediate in -- long-term impact. the group has had to spend an extra $1500 on security, guarding what is left of their stock and -- in case the thieves strike again. but they have been lifted up by their friends and neighbors, many of whom have donated to try and help get the money back they have lost. >> now that i know, i will come down and see how i can help. it's the best i can do for this community. >> and no matter what comes their way, marla says they will keep moving forward. >> if we have to cut back, we will cut back. but we will keep doing what we do. liz: fire departments around the bay are beefing up patrols for the july 4 holiday week end. there has been a surge in a surge in illegal fireworks during the pandemic. in santa rosa, 500 pounds of

illegal fireworks were recently seized. residents in the north bay are worried that illegal fireworks will spark another wildfire. the east bay is also a hotspot for the illegal activity, particularly in oakland. >> we put the word out that fireworks are illegal in the city of oakland. we are also proactively closing the peak. liz: in the east bay, oakland city officials are anticipating there will be a large crowd celebrating the holiday at lake merritt, so there will be a number of road closures and restrictions starting on sunday. the areas in red along the side of the lake here. road barricades and limited parking help keep the lake safer for everyone by giving emergent vehicles that are access. they also say it cuts down on parking congestion,

response to the supreme court's decision to overturn roe v. wade. investigators and yolo county are trying to identify a group of party crashers who tried to disrupt a private event for pride month. you can see the group of men tried to rush in to the bar, which was hosting a drag s how. when they were turned away, they stood outside yelling homophobic slurs and threatening people inside the bar. >> there was a word something was going down on main street. >> the show was canceled afterward about the event reached tiktok, but organizers put together a scaled down version of the event. a similar confrontation happened in the bay area last month, when members of the proud boys

liz: it looks like california voters will not get to vote on increasing the minimum wage to $18 per hour in november. it did not get enough signatures to qualify for the general election. the states minimum wage is do to climb to 1550 in january, but supporters of the measures say the current minimum wage is not enough, especially as housing costs and gas prices soar. the federal government has ordered 2.5 additional doses of the monkeypox -- two point 5 million additional doses of the monkeypox vaccine. this is the biden administration's effort to address the monkeypox situation in the u.s. . the first shipment is expected to arrive later this year. one daily harvest customer attempted to warn the ceo that the recalled product was creating more than gastrointestinal discomfort. hundreds of people have been

sickened, hospitalized, and in some cases had their gallbladders removed. melanie woodward has more on when and how the company alerted the public. >> luke is a marathon runner and healthy eater, but he was hospitalized three times with elevated liver enzymes after eating the lentil and leak crumbles. >> it was the most intense pain i had ever felt in my life. >> according to the fda, which is now investigating, daily harvest emailed customers shipped the affected products and for other customers whom the company had contact information. a small amount of customers reported gastrointestinal discomfort. they added out of an abundance of caution, please dispose of any product you have received and do not eat them. he got the email in his hospital bed at 7:34 p.m.

>> i had to read it twice, because we were trying to search with doctors for weeks to figure out what was going on with. >> he connected online with similar symptomed customers. >> someone like myself could be helpful of getting the word out. if you are not certain, i am certain. i'm sitting here in the hospital and have experienced this. i have gone through torture for three weeks. >> he wrote in part, i do not believe this has anything in part with cooking lentils. this is a major public safety problem. the ceo wrote back in part, we are taking this seriously and investigating. we asked all customers who have purchased to discard the product. he responded, explaining that

his discomfort was well beyond ordinary gastrointestinal discomfort and he had to talk surgeons out of removing his gallbladder. she said she would pass this to the investigation team asap. >> if i can save one person from going through what i have gone through, i want daily harvest to do the same. >> they would not tell abc7news when or if daily harvest contacted the fda. it enacted its recall on june 17. but he worked -- but -- worries about customers who did not know about the recall. he messaged rory again -- i am pleading are you to please let medical professionals know what is going on. please let the news outlets no. that afternoon, the company posted about the issue on its website.

it wasn't until june 23, six days after its voluntary recall in the form of an email to customers, that a company announcement was issued, posted on the fda website for anyone to see. >> having a food product that makes people sick is one thing. not doing everything in your power as a human being to stop it is another. >> despite exhaustive testing over two weeks, daily harvest had not identified a possible cause. she says the company is working with top doctors, microbiologists, toxicologists and independent labs. she writes, i assure you, we will not stop until we get to the bottom of this. they say the recall does not impact any of their 100 plus menu items. melanie woodrow, abc7news. liz: if you have any

information, you can go to our website or give the i team a call. it appears bart has solved its pigeon problem. a hawk named pac-man is now scaring them off. the transit agency hired southern california-based falcon force after trying to solve the problem in numerous ways over the years. the handler says when he had pac-man came in late may, there were pigeons everywhere. now just being there, their presence is effective. >> when the birds see me walking, they already know so they start to take off, and if not, ially just flies from perch to perch and i call him back. that's enough to get them out of here. liz: they come to the station three times a week for eight hours a day. good job. let's get a check of the forecast now. lisa: about 30 minutes since the sun has come up, and we only see

that high above mount tam, where the camera is situated above 2500 feet. we have the low clouds, the fog, the mist and drizzle that has been falling in san francisco, allowing for wet streets out there. as we look at live doppler 7, you noticed the intrusion of the stratus is taking its way, has moved its way into the delta and even into sacramento. those winds by fairfield gusting to 39 miles per hour, so when we see this regime, we know it is cool out there through the afternoon. look at the gray sky from our roof camera. 53 downtown, 54 and half moon bay. 55 in oakland, 58 in san jose. here is the sun, but you can see the winds are breezy and upper elevations through concord. we are looking at wind gusting over 20 miles per hour. 55 in napa, 53 in santa cruz and

later on today, sunny and in the 70's with low clouds, patchy drizzle this morning and looking at her easy to gusty winds. over the weekend, five to 15 degrees cooler than average and the summer warmth looks to return primarily into wednesday. here's a look at the cloud cover day today. -- day to day. by 2:00, the peninsula, we are clear and the north bay but this does not depict the wind that will be providing that cooling sea breeze into early sunday. a cloudy start in the afternoon, more clouds in the east bay and the north bay on the peninsula and south bay, a sunnier start. here's the fourth of july -- a week weather system to the north continuing the strong onshore flow. partly cloudy in the afternoon. those clouds not going anywhere, but they will be close enough to move in for the fourth. for saturday, upper 70's inland,

remaining cool at the coast and tomorrow, it will be the coolest afternoon with the wind continuing, slightly milder on monday with a return to 80's inland and 70's around the bay. as you look at the highs on tuesday, more 80's and 70's closer to the shoreline. still cool on wednesday at the coast, but by we get to 90 -- by the time we get to 90, temperatures in the upper 70's along the bay shoreline. the 9:00 forecast for the fourth of july, mid to low 60's for oakland and livermore. a good dose of the stratus deck with us along the coast. 68 in san mateo, 67 in fremont. 74 in napa. we've got 50's and 60's coast and bayside, perhaps 80's by antioch. tomorrow, mark the numbers down a few more degrees. partly cloudy on monday, slightly warmer, but the real

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. liz: good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. let's start with another check of the forecast this holiday weekend, starting off kind of rainy, lisa. lisa: i had to use my wipers coming in. the streets are damp and there is a lot of cloud cover towards sacramento valley this morning. here's a look at the exploratorium camera, where we are featuring gray skies, 53 downtown. a mile and three quarter visibility, and mid 50's in mountain view, san jose, emeryvil,

are breezy already with near gusts to 30 miles per hour downtown, over 21 miles per hour in concord, you can see the red by pittsburgh and antioch. so we are gray for much of the bay area, but parts of the north bay brightening up. 60's to low 70's for most of us through the 1:00 hour, and it is a cloudy gray day for much of the peninsula. we will see the coolest day of the week into your sunday. we will talk about that and the holiday in a few minutes. liz: starting off the holiday weekend, the gas prices are actually down this last week. san francisco is at $6.35, $.11 lower. oh and is down $.12 to $6.32. san jose, it's six dollars 27 cents. that's $.11 less and it was last week.

the weekend kicks off with the boom with airports across the country, travelers continuing to experience cancel fights -- canceled flights and thousands of delays. san francisco international has canceled or delayed over 40 flights so far today, so the tsa hit a record yesterday, screening over two point 4 million people in our nation's airports. christine sloan has more. >> just as the holiday weekend kicks off across america, a bump in the road for thousands of travelers. several major airports and blending ground stocks with severe weather slamming some parts of the country friday. >> as soon as we got to the airport, the flight was canceled. >> pandemic related staffing shortages also to blame. >> we got rebooked and are hustling to our plane right now. >> we are on our toes, we know there might be changes last minute.

>> rescheduled for 4:30 to get in at midnight. we have a long day at the airport. >> delta, american and united cutting back with insufficient staffing. delta even offered passengers $10,000 cash for their seats as the airline also deals with pilots picketing over pay and scheduling. >> we have flown more over time of the first six months of this year than we did in 2018 and 2019 combined. those were record year for the airline industry. >> they are also bringing in corporate employees to help at major airports this weekend. the tsa keeping 1000 additional agents on standby if needed. meanwhile, the roads are seeing a surge in travelers, 42 million people opting to drive this year , the gas prices are lower than last week. on average, a gallon of gas

july 4 ever. tip foers -- >> realize that the gas stations closest to the highway exits will be the most expensive. if you can take that exit and drive down a road a mile or so, it will be cheaper. >> a city councilman in compton brought relief to his community by giving away free gas for a limited time on friday. cars lined up, creating a traffic jam for several blocks hours before the event, with the cost around $50 per vehicle. they gave away nearly $5,000 worth of free gas. the city councilman hopes to do more events like this when in the future. building a better bay area is a balancing act. residents of the castro district continue to deal with the endless problems surrounding the area with homelessness and drug addition.

the local library has become a magnet for those living and using drugs on the streets. this is a story you will see only on abc seven with why they are asking the localrn t wi-fi'n 16th street near market, considered one of the most trouble spots in the castroauses homeless encampment. families trying to navigate their way past the tents. >> it's safe and not violent here. they don't have to worry about there to tent being on fire or someone cutting it open. >> they have also learned how to generate power from the bicycle docks. >> you almost always see someone smoking meth. people are using fentanyl as well. it's comfortable, the weather is not too bad.

no one bothers them. >> another reason for congregating here is access to free wi-fi. residents have asked the library to shut down wi-fi at night, hoping that will dry them out -- drive them out. the reality, the free city wi-fi is not reliable, but the wi-fi at the public library is much more robust and allows for streaming. in fact, we witnessed many of them doing just that, using the internet from outside and waiting the -- waiting for the library to open. they found that crime in the area fluctuated whether wi-fi was turned on or off. they also told us, they seek to address the digital divide. >> they are not filing resumes. you want to provide this service for your patrons and anyone is welcome and side, but there is no reason to let it go on during the night.

>> there are signs of vandalism in the area. neighbors continue to report crimes like broken garage doors and doorbells that have been tampered with. >> i won't let my daughter come here unaccompanied. >> that's the public safety liaison for the district. >> we don't have a lot of sticks. we have fewer carrots. if folks don't want help, they can refuse it. it's very frustrating for those of us who live and work in the castro. >> burke says it is obvious they need help and treatment, but they are among the hardest groups to reach. liz: there was a bill in sacramento, sb 1416 called mental health services for the gravely disabled that would force certain people into treatment, but it had a lot of opposition from civil liberties groups and did not pass.

liz: welcome back. here's a live look from our san mateo bridge camera. it's foggy out there this morning with some drizzle, we have those wipers on. we all know parking is always a challenge in san francisco. but for one couple, it turned into a deep dive into san francisco history. they were slapped with a huge fine for parking in their own driveway, as they have for decades. michael finney has their perplexing story. >> absolutely outrageous. >> parking in san francisco --

>> too many cars -- >> a difficult part of life here. you find a spot, get a ticket anyway. >> $2000 worth of parking tickets. >> it seems wrong. >> for judy and ed, it seems especially wrong. >> we park in that driveway every day and every night. >> they live on this steep hill, where parking can be a gravity to -- gravity defying challenge, but they can slip into their driveway -- but not anymore. >> we cannot park on the parking pad anymore. i said what, that's crazy? >> the couple got this ticket for parking in their own driveway. >> it was surprising, to say the least. >> and it came with an enormous fine. 1540 two dollars plus another 250 dollars per day if they did not get the car off their car pad.

>> i wrote back and said i thought it was a mistake. >> but it was no ordinary parking ticket. the city planning department told them it is illegal to park in the front yard of a house. >> if you are found parking there again, it would be a $1500 fine. >> so they pulled the car out, but none of it made sense. >> why are you taking this utility awaits not just us, but our neighbors? >> they have been parking there for nearly four decades. as far as they can tell, the space was used for parking since the house was built in 1910, 1 of the first in their neighborhood. >> to be told you can't use something you used for years, it is startling. >> planning department gave them a challenge. prove that it was a historic use on the lot and they might be grandfathered in. >> if we showed them a

liz: a check of the forecast. lisa, we are starting this holiday weekend pretty rainy and dreary, that's the word i was looking for. lisa: this is the rain gauge in san francisco. you can see the fog up and down the coast. it has moved inland and we are cloudy at sfo, where temperatures are in the 50's for everyone. mid 50's inland and we have santa cruz at 54 with some sun and 70's later on. 55 in napa with 56 in concord, fairly uniform out there. as you get towards the golden gate, not only do we have that mist and drizzle, but through the city as well. with that, you know it will be a day with some slow clearing. it is breezy out there already, downtown and the inland valleys allowing for 12 the 13 degrees below average, than the summer

warmth returns in the middle of the week. slightly warmer for the holiday on monday inland. this is tuesday, where we see more 80's and more 70's along the bayshore. san francisco coming up a few degrees. wednesday, we keep the trend going, low to mid 80's inland and mid 70's towards fremont, upper 60's at the coast. as we get towards your thursday, we get even warmer. notice the orange and the red with the cool sea breeze at the shoreline. as we look at the south bay, 70 in santa clara today and upper 60's closer to lupita's and sunnyvale.it's breezy with a lod cover for much of the day, 68 in san mateo. hopefully you get to the 70's in redwood city. gray skies in the north bay, it should be fairly nice and kind of cool this time of year.

liz: happening today, the california apartment of fish and wildlife is offering free fishing this weekend. anyone can fish without a fishing license. it's a great low-cost opportunity to give fishing a try if you are new to the sport. all fishing hours and extreme closures remain in effect during this free fishing period. the next free fishing day is september 3. it's a nice thing to do this holiday weekend, although it is a little cold and rainy right now. lisa: drizzle he out the coast. we have several cool days on the way -- it's cloudy and will be pouty throughout the late morning hours and then some breezy wind with 60's around the bay, upper 70's inland and the coolest day will be tomorrow afternoon, where the wind stays with us. by monday, we warm up a little bit, but will have the fog
