it has already been a bumpy ride for thousands of air travelers as airlines struggle with weather and high demand. >> it sure has. this morning thousands of delayed flights, hundreds of canceled flights. it's all caused travel case cross for many hoping to get away for the long weekend. >> now the tsa just announcing a record, nearly 2.5 million people screened friday, the largest number since the pandemic. abc's mola lenghi is at jfk airport in new york with the latest. good morning again, mola. >> reporter: hey, good morning, guys. if you're traveling -- anyone out there traveling by air this holiday weekend, just a little bit of advice, hope for the best, prepare for the worst as tens of thousands of passengers have already realized just this morning, hundreds of flight cancellations, thousands more delays and potentially all made worse by the continuing threat of severe weather. this morning, holiday air travel in full swing. airlines canceling more than 400 flights nationwide this morning.

that's after canceling nearly 600 flights and delaying almost 7,600 on friday. >> hope they are on time. no cancellations. >> reporter: one traveler in atlanta taking this video during a delay of more than seven hours, long lines and crowded terminals seen here in san francisco, orlando and seattle. >> rescheduled for 4:30 to get in at midnight so we have a long day at the airport. >> reporter: making matters worse, thunderstorms forcing ground stops at airports nationwide friday, and more interruptions could happen today. >> we've seen the chaos recently.ec eted it. >> reporter: the airline industry reeling from covid-related staffing shortages struggling to keep pace with the surging number of travelers. this week united airlines cut 50 daily flights from newark international airport. >> it's frustrating. and here's what's happening, demand has come roaring back sooner than expected. >> reporter: transportation secretary pete buttigieg talking with airlines to make sure they can reliably operate their summer schedules. >> since memorial day, we've

really pressed them to stress test their schedules and make sure that their flights that they can support at their current staffing levels. that's one of the measures we're hoping will make a difference. we expect airlines to live up to their end of the bargain. >> reporter: in a sign of soaring air travel demand, the tsa screened nearly 2.5 million people friday, the highest number since the pandemic. well, in addition to flying at prepandemic rates, it looks like people will be driving at rates we haven't seen, levels we haven't seen since about 2000. aaa expects 42 million people to hit the road this holiday weekend. that is despite, of course, the national average for a gallon of gasoline hovering around record levels, currently sitting at about $4.84 a gallon. aaa recommends if you are driving today, if you are planning on hitting the road, leave before noon or after 7:00 p.m. to give yourself the best shot. janai? >> all right. mola, thanks so much. this morning we want to send a

and look at the devastation it's caused inside the building. there's barely anything left. this church survived the second world war, but it's been wrecked by putin's invasion of ukraine. this morning, a breathtaking view down onto russia's senseless destruction of ukrainian treasures. putin's war leaving a gaping hole in the roof of this village church. more than 100 years of history here, part of the building now reduced to rubble. that video shot by a drone used to create this stunning 3d fly-through of the same badly damaged church documenting a possible war crime. and at another important cultural site, the same drone, architect sergei the pilot. >> it's all burned out. >> do you feel like you're losing a bit of your culture in this war? >> yeah, for sure. it's really devastating. >> reporter: sergei creating a

well, hey, good morning, america. it's me, rosie o'donnell. so happy to be here on the 30th anniversary of "a league of their own's" release. i can't believe it was 30 years ago, it's half my lifetime. i had the privilege of working with penny marshall, tom hanks, geena davis, madonna. it was a time i will never ever forget, and people still love it. they stop me all the time and say, rosie, did dottie drop that ball on purpose? happy anniversary, "a league of their own." ♪ we are the champions ♪ welcome back to "gma" and the one and only rosie o'donnell who played doris in "a league of their own." the all-star comedy celebrating its 30th anniversary. >> i just love this movie. three decades on and there's still no crying in baseball.

no crying in baseball as an all new series based on the penny marshall masterpiece now gets ready to run the bases later this summer. >> all inspired by the real-life all-american girls professional baseball league including mabel glare who at the age of 95 is still breaking barriers coming out after nearly eight decades. >> and joining us now from the baseball hall of fame in cooperstown, new york, is curator john odell here to tell us all about the movie and the league's lasting legacy. thanks so much for being with us this morning. >> hey, my pleasure to be here. thanks for coming. >> so this movie is a work of fiction, but it is rooted in the truth. so what is the real story behind how this league got started? >> right, so during world war ii philip wrigley, the owner of the cubs, feared that baseball might be shut down because of the incredible demand on the need for men to go fighting, and one

of the solutions that he came up women's league that could sort of fill the void of -- for baseball when all the men were gone. of course, it turned out that didn't happen, but nevertheless, the women's league got started, the all-american girls professional baseball league as we call it today, and it lasted from 1943 to 1954, so that's 12 seasons. it was an amazing success and really something that people look back to, especially because of the movie, as a real high point in women's participation in baseball. >> and, john, tell us more about some of the true stories mixed into this. were they really recruiting women from farms? did the players actually have to go through etiquette classes? >> yes, those parts of the movie are actually true. they were recruiting women from farms. they went to -- there was a lot of women's softball that was being played in the midwest, and

philip wrigley was especially focused there. but they also had ads in newspapers telling women who might be interested in playing professional ball to contact this league, and then they called them all to chicago where they had these massive try-outs. and all of those elements are shown in the movie, and those are actually true. >> that is so cool, and so you're sitting there right now in the diamond dreams exhibit. is it true that there may not have been "a league of their own" without it? >> well, the movie and the exhibit have a really wonderful relationship with one another. we created the exhibit back in 1988. the senior curator at the time, ted spencer, heard about this story and realized that this demonstrated that women had real ownership in the game, and so nobody had ever treated the story of women in baseball with any kind of seriousness or sensitivity, and that's one of the things that we decided we wanted to do.

so in 1988 created the movie -- i'm sorry -- created the exhioua at the samea thinking about doing this movie. she also had heard about these women during world war ii playing baseball, and so she came to our exhibit opening in 1988 and from that gathered a lot of the emotion that you see in that movie and, if you remember, the movie is actually book ended by scenes about cooperstown. the entire movie is a flashback for dottie as she comes to cooperstown, and the end of the movie shows an exhibit, it wasn't the exact exhibit that we ultimately had here at cooperstown but shows the women coming to the exhibit. the emotions that they show in the movie are authentic from 1988. that is, the women were really extraordinarily passionate about getting back together again for the first time in decades after having been ignored for so long.

then we think what happened, he took it to gettysburg with him, went on a tour of the battlefield and decided to change the ending and had a different piece of paper available, a pencil and then had to make an awkward bridge between the two down at the bottom. >> the nation shall have a new birth of freedom, a government of the people by the people for the people shall not perish from the earth, in pencil. >> reporter: and lincoln's typeset copy of his second inaugural address. >> essentially you can see lincoln made a script for himself. he's literally cut and pasted these sections probably to paste them to know where to stop for emphasis, and the ones that i love the most is down here because it's so deliberate. both parties deprecated war but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive and the other would accept war rather than let it perish. >> all: and the war came. >> reporter: the library is digitizing documents like these so everyone can see them, but

the originals, well, the documents are so delicate they can only be exposed to light for brief moments. >> am i looking -- are these dark spots the adhesive? >> they are, and so he would have glued them. >> it is interesting, this paper obviously has been marred in some way, and how you would preserve something simply with pencil on a piece of this, no small task. >> that's why we're very fortunate that we have the experts in our preservation and conservation divisions who can give these materials that extra special treatment because of their increased iconic status. >> they're history detectives. >> that's incredible. >> something about charlie gibson reading an original draft of the gettysburg address, so cool. a great podcast. well, now to a booming baby food industry. parents of toddlers concerned about metals in food turning to organic options. take a look. mounting concerns in the baby food industry, parents taking notice. this coming after two critical congressional reports released in 2021 indicating heavy metals are appearing in many popular baby foods. the foods containing potentially dangerous levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury. >> heavy metals in baby food at a very high concentration can be unsafe for those little developing brains. but parents need to be realistic and realize that heavy metals ae all around us. we can limit how much our babies intake. >> reporter: several brands have already issued recalls of those potentially dangerous products and federal regulators are stepping in to ensure heavy metals don't exceed dangerous levels in baby food across the industry.

[ laughter ] tell us about it. >> "elvis," which is the first movie to actually challenge "top gun" over the summer. now, this is a movie that's directed by baz luhrmann who did "romeo and juliet" and "moulin rouge." sewn so you know that it's going to be a spectacle. but the thing about this movie, it's as much about elvis as it is about colonel tom parker, who is played by tom hanks and the musical sequences are incredible because you have a
