temperatures ranging from the mid 50's to 60 where we get partly sunny skies. 56 in santa cruz with highs in the 70's. people setting up for a sunny afternoon but are breezy one on the way. gusts to 26 miles per hour. not only cooler than average temperatures but breezy wind today with highest only in the 60's and 70's around the bay and inland valleys. we will talk about a return of the 80's when we get to the fourth of july. reggie: the holiday -- liz: the holiday weekend getting off to a bad start for one nonprofit per day sell fire works every year to donate to kids in need. >> to have someone take away our

livelihood was very disappointing. tim: a less than explosive start at this fireworks stand in newark. it is run by the nonprofit optimist club and the stand sells a variety of fireworks every year, but on monday night, the day before they started selling, someone broke into their storage shed and stole a quarter of their inventory. >> in net worth, $7,000. tim they said the theft -- tim: they say the theft has left them devastated. all of the money they raise this weekend goes to help disabled youth in their community, money that now the kid simply won't see. >> scholarships, for graduating seniors special ed, a christmas , party with santa. tim: it is not the immediate impact of the burglary, but also the long-term impact on the budget of the nonprofit organization. in addition to the $7,000 lost, the group has had to spend an

extra $1500 on security to guard in is left of their stock, despite the hardships, they have also been lifted up by their friends and neighbors, many of whom have a donated to help them get the money back they lost. >> now that i know i would like come and shop and see how i can help and whatever the best i can do for the community. tim: whatever comes their wa determined to help those in need. >> if we have to cut back, we will come back, but we will keep doing what we do. liz: fire departments around the bay area beefing up troll areas -- beeping of patrol areas for the july 4 holiday weekend. they said there has been a surge in illegal fireworks during the pandemic. 500 pounds worth of illegal fireworks were recently seized. residents in the north bay are worried that illegal fireworks will spark another fire. the east bay is also another

hot spot for the illegal activity, particularly in oakland. >> we put the word out that fireworks are illegal in the city of oakland and we are also proactively closing the peak. liz: firefighters encouraging people to think twice before lighting any sort of fireworks legal or illegal. ,oakland city officials anticipating a large crowd at lake merritt for the holiday. there will be a number of road closures and restrictions. you can see the areas in red on the east side of the lake. officials say road barricades in -- and limited parking help keep the lake safer for everyone by giving emergency vehicles better access and helps to cut down on parking congestion, double parking, and traffic jams. for more on where to watch the fireworks, had to our website, abc7news.com.

happening today, a march four abortion rights. it will start at the park and go to city hall and back to the park for a vigil. it is in response to the supreme court's decision to overturn roe v. wade. now to the war in ukraine, where russian missiles struck an apartment complex in odessa, killing 21 people. tara campbell spoke with a local ukrainian who said this one hit too close to home. tara: a frantic search for survivors friday in the ukrainian port of odessa. russian missiles strike this building, killing 21 people, including a child. >> i am like, get my family to safety first. tara: the attack hitting too close to home, his father and friends living nearby. >> find out if my friends and

everybody is ok and then try to cope with emotions. tara: coping from his home in san francisco, his homeland under siege. >> tried to separate myself a little bit from it for my own sanity. tara: describing what is both devastation and frustration. >> this is a constant act of terror and it could happen at any time. tara: this time it happened just before daybreak in a town roughly 30 miles from odessa. >> these were peaceful people who were sleeping in their beds, sleeping in their homes. tara: and as the war rages on, a palo alto-based nonprofit is pouring millions of dollars into medical supplies and more, trying to keep up. >> missile bombardments and the civilian casualties in ukraine are heartbreaking and

door. liz: this is body camera video released by the woodland police department. you can see a group of men trying to rush into this bar who was hosting a drag show. when they got turned away, the group stood outside and yelled homophobic slurs and threatened people in the bar. >> there were rumors things were bring on main street but there was a presence by the woodland police department so that made us feel more comfortable. liz: the owner of the bar so the show was initially canceled afterward about this event reached tiktok but after receiving support from the community, organizers put together a scaled-down version. you might remember a similar confrontation happened in the barria last month when members of the white nationalist group the proud boys disrupted drag queen story our at the library. let's get a check outside. lisa: you really have to be on the fringes to have sunshine.

liz: san jose investigating three stabbings. when man was stabbed and a suspect took off and was found and arrested. two specs -- later, two suspects stabbed to men and they have not been found. three victims are in hospital with what police say are non-life-threatening injuries. authorities do not believe the incident are related but both started as fights as bars and nightclubs as they were closing. at least one daily harvest customer attempted to warn the ceo of the now recalled product was creating much more than

gastrointestinal discomfort. hundreds have been sickened hospitalized and in some cases had their gallbladders removed. melanie woodrow has more on when and how the company alerted the public. melanie: he is a marathon runner and healthy eater, from june 8 to june 18, he was hospitalized three times with elevated liver enzymes after eating daily harvest lentil and leak crumbles. >> some of the most intense paid i've had in my life. it felt like nothing i had ever experienced before. melanie: on june 17, daily harvest emailed customers who were shipped the product and for others who they had contact information. it stated a small number of customers have reported gastrointestinal discomfort after ingesting our french leak and lentil crumbles. they must be thoroughly cooked and added out of an abundance of caution, please dispose of any

have received and do not eat them. he got the email in his hospital bed at 7:34 p.m. >> i had to read it twice because i knew that we had been searching with doctors for three weeks to figure out what was going on with me. melanie: he said he connected online with other customers with similar symptoms. he reached out to the ceo and realized they had gone to the same business school. >> i thought hearing from someone like myself would help get the word out. i said if you are not certain, i am certain. i am in the hospital and going through torture for three weeks. melanie: any discussions he wrote in part, i wholeheartedly do not believe this has anything to do with cooking rentals. i basically chard mine. this is a major public safety problem. she wrote back that we are investigating and taking this very seriously. as soon as we got wind of an issue, we asked all customers

that purchased to discard the products. he responded that his condition was well beyond gastrointestinal problems and had to talk surgeons out of removing his gallbladder. she wrote that we would be in touch. he asked if the fbi had been informed and she didn't respond but thanked him. >> if i could save one person, i wanted daily harvest to do the same thing. melanie: due to the ongoing investigation, the fda would not tell us when daily harvest contacted the fda. they tell abc news enacted the voluntary recall on june 17 when it sent out the initial email to customers. he worried about the daily harvest customers who didn't check email or spouses and children who weren't main account holders and prepared and ate the product not knowing about the recall. on june 19, he emailed her again and i am pleading with you and please let medical professionals

know what is going on. please let the news outlets no good that afternoon they posted it on their website. it wasn't until june 23, six days after the voluntary recall in the form of an email that daily harvest issued a company announcement that was posted on the public website for anyone to see. >> having a food product that makes men sick is one thing but not doing everything in your power as a human being to address it is a whole other. melanie: he writes, spite exhaustive testing over two weeks, daily harvest has not identified a possible cause. she says the company is working top doctors, microbiologist toxicologists, and three , independent labs. she writes, i assure you will not stop until we get to the bottom of this. on monday she posted they were certain it was related only to the end lentil crumbles. melanie woodrow, abc7news.

liz: if you have a story for the i team, go to the website or call. it appears california voters will not able to vote on increasing the minimum wage to $18. i did not get enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot. the wage is do to climb to $15.50 in january supporters say the current minimum wage is not enough, especially with housing costs and gas prices soaring. the federal government has ordered 2.5 million additional doses of the monkeypox vaccine, on top of the half million doses the u.s. has already purchased. it is part of the biden administration's efforts to stop the spread of monkeypox infections in the u.s. the first shipment expected later this year. it appears bart has solved its

bird problem. a hawk named pac-man is now scaring them off. the transit agency hired southern california-based falcon force after trying to solve the problem in numerous ways over the years. the handler says when he had pac-man came in late may, there were pigeons everywhere. now just being there, their presence is effective. >> when the birds see me walking, they already know so they start to take off, and if not, i let him go and he usually just flies from perch to perch and i call him back. that's enough to get them out of here. liz: they come to the station three times a week for eight hours a day. let's get a cheap -- check of the weather. i know it is the fourth of july we can and it is drizzly. lisa: we will see the wind today and tomorrow and monday we start to turn the corner.

liz: parking is always a problem. one couple ended up having to do a deep dive. they were slapped with a huge fine for parking in their own driveway, as they have for decades. michael finney has their perplexing story. >> absolutely outrageous. >> parking in san francisco -- >> too many cars -- >> a difficult part of life here. you find a spot, get a ticket anyway. >> i got hit with $2000 worth of parking tickets. >> it seems wrong. >> for judy and ed, it seems especially wrong. >> we park in that driveway every day and every night. >> they live on this steep hill, where parking can be a gravity defying challenge, but they can slip into their driveway -- but not anymore. >> we cannot park on the parking pad anymore. i said what, that's crazy? michael the couple got this

: ticket for parking in their own driveway. judy >> it was surprising, to : say the least. michael: it come with an enormous fine, 1000 $542 plus another per day if they did not $250 get the car off their car pad. judy i wrote back and said i : thought it was a mistake. michael but it was no ordinary : parking ticket. the city planning department told them it is illegal to park in the front yard of a house. judy: and if we were found parking there again, it would be a $1500 fine. michael: so they pulled the car out, but none of it made sense. ed: why are you taking this utility awaits not just us, but our neighbors in terms of more parking spaces. michael: they have been parking there for nearly four decades. as far as they can tell, the space was used for parking since

the house was built in 1910, one of the first in their neighborhood. ed to be told you can't use : something you used for years, it is startling. michael planning department gave : them a challenge. prove that it was a historic use on the lot and they might be grandfathered in. judy if we showed them a historical photo with a car or horse-drawn buggy in the carport. michael: right away they dug up this photo from 34 years ago was not old enough. ed: i did a number of online searches and tried to find historic resources. michael: so they combed through hundreds of historic photos. plenty showed the early days when there were a few streets or homes. ed: our house and our neighbors house had empty fields all around. michael: but to find the photo of a car or horse in their particular driveway before the days of iphone cameras? particularly impossible. then, bingo.

ed: to me it was compelling it was a car. michael: this aerial photo from 1930 eight shows their exact home. ed this is our house. : and it shows a car or horse and buggy pulling into the driveway. ed: this little black dot looks like it is pulling into our house. michael it looks like a blob : from above, but it must be a car, like these other cars you see along the road. ed: i don't know what else they would be. to me, it's pretty compelling that that was a car going in or out of a parking pad. michael they rushed the photo to : the planning department. the proof they needed, right? wrong. judy: they said it was too fuzzy. michael the planning department : says it was not clear evidence. it's ok to park in front of a garage, like this. chief dan snyder said it was enacted decades ago for
