announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. kumasi: some relief for airline travelers that cancellations and delays are still happening across the country. airlines dealing with one of the busiest holiday weekends since 2020. it is sunday, july 3. thanks for joining us. let's start with a quick look at the holiday weekend forecast with lisa. lisa: we are off to a cloudy start and temperatures are certainly on the cool side, a little bit of misty drizzle. you can see all of the clouds,

that persistent stratus deck. 57 in the votto, and the wind ovansc brzy out toward t thelo touout the noon hour, mainly 60's. the clouds begin to scatter for partly cloudy skies, breezy wind once again. we will get into a bit of a warming trend for the fourth of july and we will talk about another warming trend later in the week. liz: holiday weekend travelers are seeing some relief at u.s. airports but officials say there are still at least 22 hundred flights delayed and over 500 cancellations nationwide yesterday. just this morning, sfo has canceled or delayed over 20 flights so far. christine sloan has more on how airlines are handling the boom in passengers right now.

christine: more travel troubles for the many americans leaving town this holiday weekend. saturday, the airlines canceled more than 600 flights and had more than 3000 delays. >> we got delayed on air first light and had to switch flights. we are hoping it doesn't happen again because we have stuff to do and we want to get home, so we will see. we are staying on our toes, knowing that there might be changes. even last minute. christine: cellphone video from jackson international airport shows a big crowd of passengers waiting to reschedule cwded fronti aig. some people say they waited more than seven hours. transportation secretary pete buttigieg says he is pressing the airlines to deliver their services travelers are paying for. >> a lot of taxpayer support went to these airlines in the last couple of years to prevent layoffs, but we saw a lot of people nudged into retirement and that is clearly something that has left the airlines

unprepared. christine: meanwhile, a computer glitch allowed thousands of pilots to drop scheduled flights. the union claims about 12,000 flights through the end of july were impacted. american has not confirmed the number of flights involved, but did issue a statement saying the vast majority of the effective light had been restored. but it is not just airline passengers facing challenges. aaa estimate 42 million americans plan to drive to their holiday destinations despite high gas prices. >> with the gasto p theut it has juz: in sascdanon iunclear s taken om srehi vsays the mischief happed friday afternoon but most of the car owners did not even know about it until yesterday.

surveillance video may have capture the suspect. francisco man has been found dead in the lake tahoe area. the 32-year-old had gone on a camping trip alone last wednesday according to his family. the el dorado county sheriffs office started looking for him on tuesday after other hikers reported a tent that appeared to be abandoned. among the items found were his drivers license, and wednesday morning ground crew cruise down his body in the lake and they say the death appears to be accidental. frustrations are mounting for hundreds of residents of an apartment high-rise in san francisco. today marks one month since flooding forth hundreds of people out of the building. as tara campbell reports, it doesn't look like anyone is going home anytime soon. tara: this with the scene one month ago almost to the day. residentss captured video as the

october. i did ask to speak with management inside to clarify some of these details and to get information but they said they would not be making any comment at this time. meanwhile, residents are lining up. every night they have access to the building. >> we have been living out of a suitcase the last month, so a lot of people just coming to the clothes, toiletries, some people doing laundry. tara: but the majority save a limited access is only adding to the limbo. >> pretty inconvenient to schedule your day around coming to your apartment that you're supposed to live in. >> for me, i haven't even been into my apartment in a week and a half now because i work during the time that is allotted for me to be here. liz: on the peninsula with the holiday weekend upon us, a familiar debate is reemerging in the city of pacifica over whether or not to ban fireworks. tim johns tells us why they have

been in this controversy for decades in the community and have some are making a case to keep them legal. tim: fireworks, the quintessential fourth of july symbol are once again causing an explosive debate in the city of pacifica. in november, local voters will decide whether the town should continue to allow sales of fireworks in their community or ban them for good. it is a question that has divided the city for years with opponents pointing to the environmental damage they can cause and those in favor saying the local nonprofits that sell them around town rely on them for revenue. >> it would be detrimental. we would lose about half of the budget, half our income at least. tim: all of them combined make anywhere from $180,000 to $200,000 over the holiday weekend. money that is spent back in the community in more ways than one. >> the tax from the fireworks pays for law enforcement.

tim: she wants look on nonprofits to get the money, but also worries about the increased risk of wildfires. >> that is a tough one because i know it is a big fundraiser for the community, but with wildfires being what they have been over the last fe w years -- tim: but some proponents say they think the wildfire fears are overblown. >> these are safe and sane fireworks, they barely go above 60. tim: but this isn't the first time the issue has been on the ballot. voters also weighed in on the ballot in 1993 and 1986. back then, they approved margins of -- sales of fireworks. >> that is why we don't have a backup plan at this point, we think it is going to pass.

liz: san francisco is gearing up for the return of its fireworks show this fourth of july. the show is set for tomorrow night at 9:30. fireworks are best viewed from the harbor. other public areas to watch include pier 39 and 43. there will be extra service and then after the show, three expressed shuttles to the building. in the east bay, the firework show is going to happen tonight. it is free to attend which means city officials say they are excited to welcome back the show after two years. oakland is preparing for large crowds the fourth of july. temporary street closures will be in place today and tomorrow. you can see the areas in red on the map. that includes part of lakeshore.

oakland fire officials are promising controls to prevent people from setting off fireworks which are illegal in the city. the state wildfire risk has some places reimagining the fourth of july celebration. one nation opted to forgo fireworks and use a dazzling display of drones. you can see they share this video with abc 7. they say the shift is in keeping with the spirit of blending ancient cultural practices and new technology to safeguard the environment. the display featured 300 drones synchronized to music. and tahoe was planning on having a drone show, but it was postponed due to the weather. there are a lot of events happening around the bay to celebrate the holiday. we've got a list of fireworks shows and you can see that all there.

body. i want to make sure that they have that choice. cornell: states like new york making moves in the legislature to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, but the texas supreme court law a lower court order on friday that allowed abortions to resume. >> i am heartbroken for the people of texas, for all of the states where it is now just an absolute no go. cornell: abortion rights remain intact in califo>> we must orgat donate, we must vote. but most importantly of all, must not be silent. liz: berkeley will begin to break ground on housing for students and those in need at people's park just yet. the appeals court has temporarily halted construction on the site.

they say the university has other properties that could be used for student housing. a crew has people's park this it on the national register of historic places to prevent uc berkeley from building on the site. firefighters are making progress against a wildfire burning in the sierra foothills near grass valley. the fire is the largest in the state right now. containment is up to 35% after mother nature helped crews on saturday with lower temperatures and higher humidity. the fire started last tuesday as a structure fire but we spread to nearby vegetation. it has now scorched 904 acres. firefighters are monitoring wind throughout the weekend trying to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby yuba county. that is of course something we are tracking this holiday weekend, especially as people bring out this fireworks. lisa: and even cars on the side of the road, mowing your lawn,

barbecue, all of those things that we associate summer with could create a spark. the good news is that we have a persistent onshore flow and relative humidity is rather high. we are looking at cooler than average temperatures, so for the time being, we don't have a control fire danger, but there is always fire danger in the bay area. there is a look at the cloud cover we are tracking temperatures that are in the mid 50's in san francisco, 54 in half moon bay, 58 in concord. numbers are on the cool side, a little bit of drizzle here at the coast. then we are looking at the clouds scattering out nicely throughout the day today. 24 hour temperature change, milder up in the north bay. i live look outside, this is the way san francisco is looking this sunday morning. the weather is just minimal this morning compared to yesterday. low clouds, patchy drizzle at

the coast. the clouds will scatter out. it is going to take from the other side of the early afternoon and looking at a little sunny and mild coverture on the live. still looking at a lot of cloud cover monday night. there is a look at 8:00 and notice as we get to work for flock it is mostly sunny. ce again, up to 25 and 30 miles per hour. we will continue this until about 9:00 monday morning and you notice the moisture here offshore, this system could bring a few sprinkles to the sonoma county coast. we will clear on out for a partly cloudy afternoon, look what happened by late monday into 11:00. not only some high to mid-level clouds, we've got a low clouds back across the state. certainly not cooperating with the fireworks on the fourth. as we look at napa, average high's in the low 80's.

i wanted. i want them to sit and obey and come to my command. michael: they sent their dogs to auburn canine and they both say they regret it. both want to know what the dog trainer and co-owner did with their dogs. >> i feel hopeless because it is like i can't physically make and talk and tell me. michael: marine says they were never thehey returned from auburn canine. physically, she described them as abused. >> it was just evident that they were abused. they were skinny, they have lost weight, they were malnourished, they were dehydrated. michael: she says both appeared nervous and always on edge. one day she says a delivery driver left her gait slightly ajar. from pawprints she saw on the ground she believes they were confronted by a mountain lion. >> because when they were found

12 days later, i'm so sorry -- when they were found 12 days later by a hiker down here in the canyon, they were together still, and luna was in one piece but quinn, she was just in all sorts of different pieces. michael: quinn had been mauled. the family believes they were too weak to defend themselves. moore said when the dogs left my care, they were totally fine. i don't know about me as an animal trainer can leave a dog defenseless against a mountain lion. she felt wronged. megan has not seen her dog winston since april when she dropped him off. she woke up one night to the notification and a text from him about her four and a half-year-old french bulldog.

she said it read something like this. >> when i was putting the leash on him, he nipped at me and bit me and got away. michael: it happened in san francisco where moore's bio says he grew up. he told us it was an unfortunate situation, i just lost her dog. i didn't mean to lose her dog. >> where's winston? where's winston? i think it is just the unknown. if we were able to question antoine, and we were told he did die, that closure, or he did sell him. >> no formal charges have been filed in placer county, but he remains under investigation. >> he engaged in fraud.

he made numerous victims believe that he was going to train their dogs ande money, thousands and thousands of dollars, and their dogs were not trained. michael: the sheriff's department has forwarded the case of the das office for prosecution. a decision on whether to move forward with the case is pending. jason doolittle of auburn left his dog liberty with moore and auburn canine. training didn't go as planned, and moore agreed extend the training for free. then one day, he contacted jason with news that the nevada animal control was at his home where he had taken liberty. he told us one day i overslept and the dog peed in the crate. but jason says that the animal control officer put it differently. >> she told me the conditions were horrible. she said our dog was caked in feces in urine, and a small, travel sized crate in a garage with no ventilation, the doors

were closed. michael: there is a complaint charging moore with three misdemeanor counts of unlawfully submitting an animal to be in a building without proper care and attention. a fourth misdemeanor count charges him with operating or maintaining a kennel without a proper license. the das office says dogs have been seized at moore's house four times since december due to poor living conditions. moore says that is not accurate, dogs were seized from his home once due to a storm that caused flooding. a bill would require dog trainers to disclose their training methods, any licenses they have, or training may have received and mandates related to any civil judgment in criminal animal cruelty convictions. >> what this bill will do is establish accountability and recourse of being able to take

the 24 hour temperature change has as a couple of degrees warmer in the north bay. the breezy wind from the city all the way to the delta. 9:00, 50's and 60's. about 11:00, we still have plenty of clouds, getting a little more sunny in the south bay. by 2:00 in the afternoon, still partly cloudy. it is going to take throughout the day to clear on out. temperatures still in the 60's and 70's. liz: in the south bay, san jose police are investigating three stabbing that all happened early saturday morning. the first happened near santa clara and 3rd street when one man was stabbed. a suspect in the case has been arrested. a short time later, two suspects stabbed to men near santa clara and market street. all three victims are in the hospital and expected to survive.

investigators do not believe the knife attack's are related but they say both started as fights as bars and nightclubs were closing. a man who was on supervised release for burglary and narcotics has been arrested. the chase started just after 3:00 a.m. yeste officers say the driver took off and a short time later, he lost control of the car and hit a pole. the driver was treated at a nearby hospital and then taken to jail. the uvalde school police chief has resigned from the city council just weeks after beings are in. the cheapest bass heavy scrutiny over the police response to the school shooting at the end of may. chuck has the story. chuck: embattled consolidated independent school district police chief pete arredondo has resigned from the city council posed city officials have confirmed to abc news. he was elected to the council position on may 7, sworn in on

euros black man jayland walker. >> i grew up with him and he didn't deserve this at all. >> walker were shot early monday morning after officers tried to pull him over for what his family says was a minor traffic violation. >> we would like to know why that is necessary. >> when walker didn't stop his vehicle, officers chased him for several minutes. they claim a firearm discharge from inside his vehicle. when the car slowed, they say walker ran away into a parking lot adding actions by the suspect caused officers to proceed he posed a deadly threat to them and in response, officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect. a cleveland affiliate says preliminary medical examiner records show there were more than 60 markers indicating defects on walker's body and multiple gunshot wounds to his face, abdomen and upper legs. pastor robert pound says he saw the police body camera of the shooting.

liz: welcome back. he really live look from the golden gate bridge. not as rainy and drizzly as yesterday morning. milpitas hosted an event that was america's first hong kong carnival. the festival was to bring former hong kong or's together. it was a sellout. tickets were snapped up as soon as they went online. actually, we were very surprised. at first, we thought of this activity, we thought that 1000, maybe 2000 people. liz: at least 4.5 thousand tickets were ultimately sold ahead of the carnival opening. it gave old and new immigrants a chance to connect with each other and this represents hong kong's lionlike spirit passed along from generation to generation. in the south bay, children's discovery museum in san jose.
