this happened about five blocks away from where different deadly mass shooting in may happened. that left six people and 12 tohe sotinures, we not kw moin a have very limited information. as soon as we get more, we will you know. kumasi: cities across the bay area are presenting -- preparing to celebrate the fourth of july with legal fireworks shows. california is in aught, so enjoy these shows and not illegal fireworks. liz kreutz is joining us with more on what is planned. liz: despite fire danger in pandemic delays, fireworks or back this year. some started last night. in richmond, the show brought out huge crowds over marina bay. while it is beautiful to watch, fire danger is a big concern, especially when it does come to legal fireworks. in parts of contra costa county, law enforcement says they are cracking down this year.

we spoke to the mayor of antioch. he said staff will be working overtime in the city has been working to come up with a plan. they are ready to respond quicker to incidents related to illegal fireworks, that is going to include flying their drones to identify people using them. >> in the past, we have had a school parking lot taken over by spectators and people who are participating in huge illegal fireworks displays. we deploy a drone, get the address and get video footage you need is evidence, then we can deal with them accordingly at a later time. liz: over the weekend, there were seven fires in contra costa county. even though it is a cooler weekend overall around the bay area, fire officials are warning the fire danger is still very real. it is dry and windy, which can spread and grow a fire rapidly. moral of the story, we say it every year.

[laughter] the city of phoenicia kicked off the holiday weekend with their traditional torchlight parade. it gave residents a chance to celebrate the country and brought people together. it had been canceled the last couple years because of the pandemic. spectators enjoyed live entertainment and appearances from local organizations. there is a drone show finale. kumasi: today is the return of the annual fourth of july parade in danville. seating is first-come, first-served. a lot of people got there early, really early, putting lawn chairs and spots after 6:00 last night. they have hosted the event since 1975. the theme is celebrating local olympians, honoring athletes who participated in the games. >> we missed the parade two years. we've got our chairs, all the

family will be here tomorrow. kumasi: the parade starts in a few hours at 9:00. there are expecting more than 100 groups to take part in the parade. reggie: san francisco is gearing up for the return of its fireworks show this fourth of july. the set to start tonight at 9:30 and will look exactly like this video shows it. fireworks are best viewed from the hyatt street harbor. other public areas to watch from include pier 39 and peer 43 walkways. for the show from 3:00 to 9:00, there will be extra service. after the show, three expression shuttles will go to the ferry building. bart will run on a sunday schedule today and have extra trains before and after fireworks. kumasi: oakland is preparing for large crowds. street closures are in place, they include parts of lakeshore and grand avenue. road closures will be in place on grizzly peak on the fourth. the road will be closed to traffic between skyline boulevard and centennial drive

-- a crosswind sent the plane out of control as the pilot was trying to land. the faa was called into the scene along with the building inspector. no word on where the flight originated. kumasi: the coast guard is searching for three men who are missing after they jumped into the sacramento river to save a child. it happened yesterday afternoon with of antioch. the child made it out safely and did not need medical attention. the coast guard has shifted the search to a recovery mission. closer to home, a similar incident. a man died while saving his son yesterday afternoon. the napa county sheriff's office reports this is the second drowning at the lake in less than a week. the 35-year-old was not able to swing back and drowned. his son survived. the sheriff's office is running the public to wear a life jacket went on a boat or in the water. reggie: san jose police say the issue of 500 citations during a

building a better bay area, and we have been focusing on the crises in the tenderloin neighborhood like drug use there is a controversial bill that would allow three california cities to set up safe injection sites and it is close to reaching the governor's desk. some see it as key in combating the abridged crisis in others are not so sure. reporter: the goal is to help those addicted to drugs and stay alive and get treatment. the bill is sb 57, introduced by senator scott weiner. it paves the way for san francisco, oakland and l.a. to set up safe injection sites the places people can go to legally inject drugs all under supervision. >> these are one tool in the toolbox to try to prevent people from dying of overdoses and get people into treatment. reporter: it is making its way to the legislature and could lane on the governor's desk next month. >> if the governor signs the bill into law, it would go into

effect january 1. my hope is the city will be prepared at that point in time to open one or more of the sites. reporter: san francisco department of public health saying in a statement in part, the city is pursuing a policy that could allow the opening of safe consumption sites once the legal herder -- hurdles have been addressed. it will save lives and help connect more people to treatment and services. and would add to a multipronged approach to reduce overdose deaths. but jackie berlin has concerns. her son has been on the streets of the tenderloin for more than a decade. now addicted to fentanyl. >> i see this as enabling him to continue. literally, he is a zombie on the streets. reporter: she speaks to her son every week, sometimes searching for him on the streets. >> he says he wants to get well, and he sees how hard it is in the city and it is discouraging him. reporter: she wants to see more

the rices fire near grass valley. it is the largest active fire in the state, containment is up to 45%. following lower temperatures and higher humidity over the weekend. the fire started last tuesday, a structure fire that spread to nearby vegetation. more than 900 acres have burned. crews are monitoring winds into trying to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby yuba county. san jose's joey chestnut is going to try to win nathan's famous fourth of july hot dog eating contest for the 15th time. 35,000 fans are expected to be at coney island to watch the competition and millions more will be watching on our sister network, espn. chestnut holds the current network of eating 76 hotdogs and the buns in 10 minutes. he has a foot injury this time, that is not stopping him from trying to defend his title. >> i think i feel better than i look, i look pretty rough. but i am going to go out hungry and eat.

reggie: an update to the breaking news from the top of the hour. a homicide investigation is underway downtown. there are five adult victims in a shooting, one person has died. this happened just about five blocks away from a different deadly mass shooting that happened in april that left six people dead and 12 others hurt. he did not know what led up to the shooting or if any suspects have been identified. various traits are closed. again, shooting in downtown sacramento overnight.
