but we begin with the travel chaos over the july 4th weekend. with flying back at pre-pandemic levels, already thousands of cancellations and delays over the weekend. transportation correspondent gio benitez is at laguardia airport in new york with details. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, eva. good morning. cancellations and delays, they're looking much better today than they did this weekend. only about a hundred flights canceled so far, but no doubt about it, tomorrow, that is the day to watch because that is the busy travel day. this morning, fourth of july travel setting a new record as americans take to the sky for the holiday weekend. the tsa kicking off the weekend with a pandemic-era record, screening nearly 2.5 million people on friday alone. the last time we saw a number

that high was in february of 2020. the travel chaos delaying thousands. between saturday and sunday, 9,000 flights delayed, nearly 1,000 cancelled. >> i won teacher of the year and i won a scholarship i have been waiting two years for, and i'm missing my opening reception tonight because of this situation. >> reporter: this as airlines face a string of staffing shortages from the pandemic and severe weather in parts of the country. >> there are still far too many flights that are scheduled to operate and airlines are struggling in some cases to get pilots, flight attendants and others to staff those flights or the airports where those flights are operating to. >> reporter: tensions are high. in new york city, a security scare shutting down a terminal at jfk airport. detectives and the bomb squad moving in after workers found an abandoned bag. witnesses say over a thousand people were evacuated. police going through the terminal with k9 units. >> i'm scared, of course. everybody's scared. everybody, you know? thank god nothing happened. thank god. >> reporter: police eventually clearing the airport finding no threat. but the mayhem on the ground is still causing concern. >> we've been traveling since 9:30 a.m. yesterday.

it's just so hard. >> reporter: and experts say if you are traveling this summer, expect more delays and cancellations. >> july 4th is always a peak weekend, and it's probably greater this year not just because of pent-up demand. this problem is not going to go away this summer. it's not going to go away this year. i doubt it gets much better before the end of 2023. >> reporter: it is rough. again, tomorrow is the big return home, no doubt about it. that could be another record-breaker, the best thing you can do, eva, is get on that earliest flight out. >> that's good news. i have to travel tomorrow. do we know which airports are going to be the busiest? are there better days to travel home? >> reporter: unfortunately for you, new york-area airports, no doubt, some of the busiest, along with chicago, atlanta, l.a.x. those will be the busiest. wednesday and thursday will be a lot lighter, but remember with all of these staffing shortages

we're seeing, it's all about the weather, and weather changes everything. make sure you're looking at that forecast. eva? >> a lot to keep track of. gio benitez there for us, thank you so much. whit? let's check out the situation on the nation's roads. despite gas prices ticking down slightly, they're still the highest they have ever been on the fourth of july. that's not stopping millions of americans from taking holiday road trips. stephanie ramos is in new jersey with more. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. as millions take to the airports, millions more are headed back on the roads this morning. aaa is predicting a new record for car travel this weekend with 42 million people expected to have hit the roads. the group says the busiest places to drive this weekend are los angeles, new york, seattle, atlanta, and boston with travel at peak times. more than double the usual trip, but good news is that today isn't as busy on the roads for

those looking to jump start their drive home. experts say leave early to beat any possible traffic, and despite the record-high gas prices, they're not keeping americans from the roads. gas prices are actually down slightly this weekend from their high in mid-june, but don't expect any deals. the average is still $4.80. whit? >> still not much comfort there. stephanie, thank you. janai? whit, if it's not delays and cancellations it could be weather impacting holiday travel. for a look at the holiday travel forecast and the red flag warnings threatening fireworks displays in the west, danielle breezy from our nashville station wkrn joins us with that. good morning, and happy fourth of july to you, danielle. >> reporter: hey, right back at you, janai. good morning, and unfortunately, we were dealing with a lot of severe weather yesterday. we're going to deal with it again today in parts of the country. want to show you this video. this is actually flooding rains over in arkansas. you can see folks literally pushing the car out of the flood waters. missouri picking up over 5 inches of rain. it wasn't just that area. mount rushmore saw rain, a beautiful rainbow and then at

night, natural fireworks. thunderstorms with the fireworks. how cool is that video? that was over the weekend. today we're watching two pockets of severe weather, northern plains, great lakes of chicago, all modes of severe weather is possible, including tornados. that threat shifts tomorrow and expands from billings, montana, to baltimore, where we can see wind and hail. not to mention -- you mentioned this, janai. we got red flag warnings in effect for the desert southwest. fire danger again today. a lot of folks actually not setting off fireworks due to the burn bans. janai, back to you. >> widespread concerns. danielle, thank you. eva, over to you. people taking to the streets in akron, ohio, protesting the police shooting of a 25-year-old black man killed in a hail of bullets after a vehicle and foot chase. the city just releasing body and dash camera footage from the scene. abc's mola lenghi is there at the akron police station. good morning, mola. >> reporter: good morning, eva. protests coming to a head here last night outside the akron

police department. authorities deploying smoke grenades to try to disperse the crowds out here. some of those canisters still littered out here on the street. fourth of july celebrations canceled for the weekend in akron. the tipping point was the release of that graphic body cam video we're about to show you. the body cam video, we have to warn you, it's graphic. overnight, akron police deploying smoke grenades and according to local reports on the scene tear gas to break up what they called an unlawful assembly outside of police headq headquarters. it came after hours of peaceful protests sparked by the release of body cam video showing the shooting death of unarmed 25-year-old jayland walker. [ crowd chanting ] police say, officers at first attempted to stop walker's car for a piece of broken equipment. that's when they say he sped

off, firing a shot out of the car. >> 21 shots fired at that vehicle. that vehicle had a shot come out of its door. >> reporter: moments later, police say as walker's car slows down he jumps out, wearing a ski mask. the car chase now a foot chase. authorities say several officers unsuccessfully attempting to use their tasers. still running officers claimed walker stops and turns towards them, prompting a barrage of gunfire. police say 12 officers responded to the incident. 8 firing their weapons dozens of times. >> based on the video i anticipate that number to be high. a lot of rounds were fired. >> i've talked about being beyond outraged, beyond shocked, and extremely heartbroken. >> reporter: a preliminary report by the med cam examiner shower over 60 wounds to walker's body. >> it was absolutely excessive. the law requires force that is reasonable. we have heard numbers as high as 95 shells on the ground. i ask you, as he's running away what's reasonable?

to gun him down? no, that's not reasonable. >> reporter: walker was unarmed when he was shot, according to police. adding they later found a handgun and loaded magazine in the driver's seat of his car. walker's family say this wasn't the jayland they knew. >> jayland was a very sweet young man. he was always respectful. that's the way he was raised. that's the way we were raised. he didn't raise his voice. he didn't like confrontation. >> reporter: this distraught family now calling for peace. >> we want everyone to be respectful, peaceful, dignified in honor of jayland walker, please. that's what we ask. >> reporter: according to records, there were no previous disciplinarian complaints against any of the eight officers involved in the shooting. they're all on paid administrative leave pending an outcome by a state probe in ohio

by an independent investigative team. eva? >> foukrainian forces, russia t a key city in the eastern part of the country. helping to solidify its control over the region. our foreign correspondent, tom soufi burridge is on the ground in ukraine with the latest. tom, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. yes, the ukrainians are being overwhelmed by the russians out in the eastern donbas, a brutal artillery fight and despite new weapons for the ukrainians from the u.s. and the europeans the russians are winning. this morning, russia advancing again in eastern ukraine, taking the city and with it full control of the luhansk region the northern half of the donbas. russian forces seen celebrating in this video posted by a chechen leader. but look at the destruction putin's offensive brought to the city.

the kremlin-controlled channel also showing russian and soviet-type flags placed on state buildings. president zelenskyy confirming his troops have retreated from the city to save the lives of soldiers. in kyiv we spoke to a former u.s. army infantry fighting for ukraine who just returned for the front in the donbas asking us not to use his name saying ukrainian troops are completely outgunned. >> the front line is basically the russians shelling you constantly. it's really, really hell. >> reporter: the u.s. veteran saying ukraine needs more weapons from the u.s. and its allies to halt the offensive out east. >> the russians have air supremacy. not just air superiority, but air supremacy. 24/7.targeted and hunted us - >> reporter: this as two other american fighters remain in captivity by russian forces. their families coming together for the first time, united in

their mission to secure their release. >> they're great patriots. they love their country. even more than that, they love liberty. >> some days when i feel like i can't go on anymore, i know that everybody back here has my back and it's just a wonderful feeling. >> reporter: one key takeaway from that u.s. veteran is that this latest city to fall was an easier fight for the russians. the ukrainians still hold two key cities in the eastern donbas but soldiers telling us that ukrainians are really up against it right now. whit? >> an alarming account from that american fighter. tom, thank you. janai? now turning here at home to that frightening formula 1 crash. one of the race cars flipping over, spinning upside down and rolling over a tire barrier before finally being stopped right there by a safety fence. incredibly, thankfully, that driver is okay. trevor ault is here with more.

trevor, that video terrifying. >> it's unbelievable, right? formula 1 has become enormously popular all around the world. there were millions watching around the globeheis haened. life-threatening crash. we're only comfortable showing it to you because everybody made it out okay. heart-stopping moments at sunday's british grand prix. this life-threatening crash seconds after the race began. that multicar collision sending chinese driver guanyu zhou tumbling off the track. flipping over the catch fence and landing dangerously close to the fence. a spectator capturing the dramatic scene saying it was terrifying. the car mangled and guanyu still inside, another jumper george russell jumping out of his car, disqualifying him from the race to see if he was okay. >> running over to see if he was okay. >> reporter: zhou was pulled from the wreckage. paramedics giving a thumbs up to

signal he was already as he was taken off the course on a stretcher as a precaution. the 23-year-old driver posting this photo on twitter seemingly unfazed, writing, i'm okay. all clear. halo saved me today. that's the thin titanium shield surrounding the racer's head in an otherwise open cockpit. it's designed to protect drivers in potentially fatal accidents like this one. it was controversially made mandatory in 2018, but has since saved multiple drivers' lives. >> the fact that he has survived that crash is not only miraculous but quite frankly marvelous as well. >> reporter: french formula 1 driver romain grosjean survived this fiery crash at the 2020 bahrain grand prix, crews dosing him with fire extinguishers before he was air lifted to the hospital. >> i wasn't for the halo years ago, but it was greet for

formula 1. without it, i wouldn't be able to speak to you today. >> when the halo was first introduced four years ago most drivers actually said they hated it and so did a lot of fans. they didn't like how it looked or obscured the driver. a lot of them have changed their tune. without it, several of these drivers very likely would have been killed. >> incredible that it was so controversial at first, but the difference it has made in saving lives. >> if it saves your life, then it's a different story, right? >> yeah, they needed it. >> thanks, trevor. well, moviegoers have gone bananas over the new "minions" movie. the prequel about the teenage gru's desire to be a super villain already taking in more than $108 million domestically, on track to be the biggest independence day opening for an animated movie ever. hollywood is hoping that gru's big opening makes him a hero, bringing more families back to the theaters. >> i love the minions. especially kevin. he's my favorite minion. >> wow. you have a favorite minion? >> there's bob. i know most ofhe names we'll get there eventually. first though, we have other headlines that we are following this morning, including the

holiday weekend as we return to pre-pandemic levels of travel. if you're choosing to drive instead despite the high gas prices traffic is expected to be lighter today but still leave early to avoid any problems. a 22-year-old danish man is in custody after a mass shooting at a mall in copenhagen. at least three people were killed. four others critically injured. the suspect is expected to be in court today. authorities saying that the shooting appears to be random. and in italy, a large chunk of a glacier broke free slamming ice, snow, and rock into hikers. italian officials on the scene saying at least six people were killed and more than a dozen missing. parts of the mountain are closed off to climbers today in fear that it could happen again. two long island, new york, beaches are expected to reopen today for the fourth of july after being shut down after a shark in my opi

exercise. the man needed stitches to bites on his chest and hand. we've got a lot more coming up ahead, including where to find the biggest grocery savings you can get just in time for your holiday gathering and the best july 4th sales ready to grab right now. that's coming up. now to the new details this morning and to the capture of that fugitive wanted for the murder of a pro cyclist. we're learning new details this morning about the capture of the kaitlin armstrong in costa rica before they tracked her down. our chief national correspondent matt gutman joins us with more. matt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. the u.s. marshals telling me that kaitlin armstrong started the process of trying to become a yoga instructor in costa rica. she had taken up surfing, a new life under a new name with a noticeably new look. those arrest images show her with shorter, darker hair and what authorities say could be plastic surgery to her nose. escorted through the airport and down that walkway by officers on

either side, a shackled kaitlin armstrong an international fugitive no more. >> why did you flee out of the country? >> reporter: seen in this video from station ktrk, she was not answering questions. her six weeks on the run ending last week with her capture in a trendy costa rican beach town, wanted for allegedly murdering professional cyclist moriah wilson who police say she considered a love rival. armstrong looking decidedly different in her harris county mugshot. >> she also changed her physical appearance a little bit, shortened her hair length. she dyed it dark brown. she had some type of bandage on her nose with some type of bruising fixated below her eyes. >> are you saying she had a nose job as well? >> i don't know if it was a nose job. >> reporter: on may 11th, officials allegedly saying armstrong flew into a jealous rage when she learned that her boyfriend went on a date with wilson. police say she tracked wilson to this house and shot her multiple times. wilson died at the scene. authorities say armstrong's jeep

was seen on surveillance nearby. two days after the shooting police questioned armstrong, but did not arrest her. then she vanished. selling that jeep in south austin, then hopping a flight from austin to houston and then somehow making her way to new jersey. from there to costa rica with a passport that authorities say wasn't her own, eluding authorities every step of the way. in costa rica authorities say she was trying to make a life for herself. >> going to these yoga studios, taking classes, signing in under an alias. we believe she was trying to become some type of an instructor. >> reporter: it was that alias named very close to her own that led prosecutors to her. the district attorney could charge her with capital murder. >> the district attorney's office might choose to go forward with a capital murder charge.

if they seek the death penalty and she's found guilty it's either death sentence or life without parole. >> reporter: now given her recent history prosecutors deemed her a flight risk. her bail was set at $3.5 million. at some point in the coming days she'll be transferred from the houston area to the austin area where her trial will be held. mo wilson's family releasing a statement saying that they trust justice will prevail. guys? >> matt gutman for us, thank you so much. now to those fourth of july barbecues. families are feeling the impact of inflation. nationally food prices are up 10% from a year ago. the president and ceo of stu leonard's supermarkets, with where we're seeing those surging prices and where you can still save. good morning to you. >> good morning, eva. happy fourth. >> happy fourth to you. the first question, where are prices rising the most? >> well, you know what you're

seeing -- you're seeing prices increase like chicken's up a little bit right now. lobster prices are up, and you know, i even took these off the shelves, the most expensive items at stew leonard's. these king colossal crab legs. each one is $35. we didn't sell a whole bunch of them. but a lot of people going out to the hamptons stopped and picked these up at our long island stores. so, you know -- but you know, you're holding on to things like ground beef right here is still 3.99, the same price it was last year. and what we noticed, eva, people are switching to what's on sale, you know, we just had a monster weekend at stew leonard's. i mean people came out in droves but they wanted things that were on sale. like porterhouse steaks were the

same price as last year. we saw lobster tails were the same price as last year. we just noticed a pent-up demand like you mentioned earlier on the show today. >> if you're having lobster and crab legs at your fourth of july i'm coming. for those trying to save some money, any ways to save here at the last minute? >> well, what i would say is right now buy local. you know, we're just getting local new jersey blueberries in the store. you can save 50 cents to a $1 package. if you don't get blueberries from california right now -- it's because of transportation costs. it costs less to ship them to our stores. same here with the corn, long island is lighting up right now and they're starting to sell corn. so if you buy local you can save money. the other thing i'd recommend go to the apps for the store you're shopping at because they always have specials on there.

same thing at stew leonards. look on the app and look for the specials. the other thing that's sort of interesting that we just noticed, some people are opting to get food delivered to their house rather than filling their gas tank up and driving to the food store. we notice this fourth of july weekend a bump in our delivery business. >> that's interesting. >> yeah. >> as far as when we'll start to see those prices coming back down, do you have any sense of when that might happen? >> we're starting to see -- we were just in kansas city visiting the ranchers out there. they said the herd sizes have stabilized right now. they feel the supply chain chinks we used to have have smoothed out. we're starting to see a softening in the beef prices right now.

scripts for it and it rang a bell, the title, and i looked up and saw a very sort of summarized version of the story and went, this is the most horrendous story i've ever heard. i then read the script that takes it in a whole different direction. you know gradually make it to the beginning of the "flowers in the attic" novels. i read the books before we started filming. i was surprised because malcolm and olivia in the novel don't really appear that much. certainly malcolm is barely seen, and olivia is only really seen through kathy's point of view, from the child -- it's all, you know, the children's point of view. so i felt like there was a lot of scope and a lot of room to flesh out these characters. >> i love uh i don't read a little blush about it and thought this is an awful story, but let me read more. >> that's the thing, you speak to anybody and you say i'm

reading the script, "the flowers in the attic." there's this guilty curiosity. it was a huge phenomenon. people read it secretly under their bed sheets. >> so jemima you play the grandmother in her early years before the end when she ends up locking up her grandchildren in the attic. can fans expect some of the original in the prequel? >> absolutely. we cover a lot of ground. we start with olivia kind of age 30, unmarried, independent woman and see how she becomes this woman in the novel. the episode four we're there. it catches up with "flowers in the attic." so i get to be grandma by that point. and then, there are certain things that happen throughout the series. they link up with the things

with the character. it brings a physical tito the character. it really helped. >> yeah. >> just practice. >> so you also shared the screen with some tv icons, kelsey grammar from "frazier" and jon hamm. what was that like? >> it was fantastic. >> delightful. kelsey grammer i grown up with him. he was in right from the beginning. everything felt quite overwhelming at that point. >> but he was so professional and sweet and kind, and lovely, and harry, he was sort of quite early on. >> yeah. >> and he was just delightful. he's a delightful human being and a pleasure to work with and, yeah, i loved it. >> it was fantastic. the whole cast, more and more characters come online as you get through the episodes. but from start to finish we were so blessed with this cast. >> some unknowns, people at the

beginning of their careers who will be illustrious. everyone was, yeah. >> we're almost out of time. i'm dying to know -- this is a very dark subject matter. how did some parrots help lighten the mood? >> oh, yes. >> we were filming this particularly huge scene with a lot of the cast in it, i think poor hannah, was giving a speech, suddenly we heard someone going "cut." itwas the parrot. >> if we made questionable acting choices the parrot would -- >> say something far ruder. >> that's hilarious. a parrot on set to help lighten the mood. thank you so much for being here with us. jemima, you had your babies on set there with you. i loved that story. incredible. lifetime's limited series "flon e ti the origin" premiers this saturday.

sirloin, eh. chuck is amazing. more fat is more flavor. one of tricks that i have to grilling burgers in the backyard is my korean barbecue sauce. we're going to make that first. this time you're going to work. >> all right. tell me what to do. >> some sesame oil. go, go. we got some lime juice. go, go. >> bam. >> then we have some korean pepper paste. whisk. whisk. whisk. make a mess. it's july 4th. after we're done with the pbarb of a mess. >> whit, i think we're good. >> let's jump over to the grill. the trick is we baste the burger with the barbecue sauce the entire time while we're cooking. when we do that, it caramelizes around the burger and gives it a punch of flavor. also, when you're done basting the burger, put two pieces of cheese. never one. one is for wimps.
