building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> a person of interest now in custody after a shooting near chicago. what we are learning this morning. kumasi: it is a busy night for firefighters across the bay area. the one county that responded to dozens of fires over the holiday weekend and many reggie: of those caused by fireworks. reggie:? a home catches by -- catches fire by the south bay. how fireman helps get them out to safety. kumasi: it tuesday, july 5. drew: we will find muggy conditions continuing for the day ahead. a little bit of fog. right now, visibility on live doppler 7, you can see half moon bay. we are down to a half mile. some drizzle elsewhere. we are doing just fine when it comes to visibility. it is a mild morning. we are in the middle to upper 60's right now. combine that with humid conditions, it does feel quite muggy this morning. we will keep those temperatures on the mild side later this afternoon. as a live look from our

exploratorium camera, showing you overcast skies from this vantage point. what we are waiting for is a cold front moved through later this afternoon. the morning hours, we keep that humidity, keep that cloud cover. we will get some late day sunshine by about 4 p.m. as that front moves through. it clears out cloud cover and brings back sunshine. temperatures pretty copter will, mainly in the 60's and 70's. we will talk about when that humidity will get out of here, coming up in reggie: about eight minutes. reggie:thank you. we are learning about new details at that july 4 parade in highland park. two of the six people killed have now been identified. one of them is a grandfather. the 73-year-old arrived in the u.s. in the 80's and worked here for many years. his family says he was a humorous man who loved to fish. the other identified victim worked at a chicago area synagogue. jobina at the live desk, tracking what that we -- what we know about them a station. jobina: police have a 22-year-old man in custody,

calling him a person of interest. he has not been charged. the local authorities and fbi are questioning him about his involvement in the attack. six people were killed and at least 31 others sent to the hospital when the shooter sprayed from a rooftop down onto the local independence day parade. at least 25 of the victims had gunshot wounds, including a child, who is in critical condition this morning. according to the gun violence archive, this adds to the long list of more than 300 mass shootings in this country so far this year. politicians are once again calling for tighter gun control. >> while we celebrate the fourth of july just once a year, mass shootings have become our weekly -- yes, weekly -- american tradition. jobina: investigators are waiting on the atf to trace the history of a rifle up at the scene. officials say there is still a lot of work to do to confirm the suspected gunman in the shooting. kumasi: that mass shooting casts a shadow of sorrow and concern

over july 4 celebrations here in the bay area. sausalito held an independence day parade for the first time since 2019. >> this is horrible. this is not the time. people are trying to celebrate what this country represents. it is just hard to see. >> i'm glad the senate did their job and started, but they are not done. they are just getting started. we need a ban on assault weapons. kumasi: the mood shifted as word of mass shootings spread. the parade also made its way through the streets of antioch. in person there said he would would like at least one gall -- one gun long relaxed. >> i definitely would like if it wasn't so hard to get a concealed carry license, you know what i mean? i have to protect my family, if anything happens. kumasi: antioch's mayor says the city has a plan in place for the holiday weekend, having at least

40 officers on patrol and drones to help stop and prevent crime. reggie: two philadelphia police officers were shot during the city's fourth of july celebrations, one hit the shoulder, the other suffered a grades wound to the head. it happened as a huge crowd was gathered for fireworks and loud music. -- with music. the gunfire set off a chaotic scene as people ran for safety. police have not identified a suspect in this shooting. we sent that notification on our at when the news first broke. if you want to learn about events like this in the future or updates from the illinois shooting, download our app from the app store. kumasi: firefighters work throughout the night to put out fires, some caused by fireworks. reporter: good morning. the contra costa county fire department says since the start of the holiday weekend on friday, they responded to roughly 70 fires across the

county. they say most of those were started by fireworks. the county fire department has been tweeting hour-by-hour updates since last night on the fourth. they say over the course of the night, they responded to some 30 fires and at least nine so far are confirmed to have been caused by fireworks, but they suspect really the best majority of those other fires were as well. one of the fires was a grass fire in bay point. it is the so-called driftwood fire. that one burned 6.5 acres. a witness told investigators someone was setting fireworks off from a car and the fire started after that. house fire was also started in pittsburgh. >> upon arrival, we have flames inside the house that originated at the exterior of the home. we believe at this time they were set off by fireworks. >> [indiscernible] >> it was all around going on. it wasn't necessarily my neighbors or anything, but we

heard them all around. reporter: a scary situation for those folks, and the flames did make it into the roof of that home. that family, including their dog, say they are now homeless because of this fire. they do believe that fire was started because of fireworks. live here in lafayette, liz kreutz, abc7news. reggie: several firework shows heaven across the bay area. fire officials were stolen harel -- high alert, worried about the legal explosives. >> i came here to see a show and i'm expecting a show. reporter: discovery meadow park downtown yesterday. one of eight professional fireworks displays played for the fourth. they are not quite as packed pandemic years. >> it is kind of like a family tradition. reporter: an entertainment event

encouraged by local fire agencies. they asked people to live the products except to the pros, pushing people to attend legal events. because of the drug, fireworks-cost fires is an extreme risk. spectators should their excitement. >> like to see them explode, blow up. >> seeing them blow up, because it looks like rockets, but they are not that big. they are smaller. also, when they burst, because it looks like a really cool image. reporter: for 12-year-old angel diaz, his favorite moment is the finale. but when it comes to illegal fireworks shows elsewhere in sinclair county this holiday, it is the idea of so much happening until little time that has jeff levine and others >> on high alert. >>i'm going to be on high alert tonight. reporter: san jose fire reported

nearly 90 july 4 fireworks related fires over the past two holidays, highlighting preventable property damage. monday pointing to the sheer power of the per techniques being detonated. >> there seems to be less aerial activity, but more explosives. reporter: he says the city's efforts to crack down, the severe drought, impacts animals and peoples, and that stops -- that does little to stop people from setting them off in the fire pit -- in the bay area. >> i don't how to reach people. i really don't. reggie: san jose firefighters are investigating the cause of this one alarm house fire. it started around 1:30 this morning on come their way. the homeowners barking dog with what woke them up. then, according to fire officials, a retired firefighter called 911 and went inside to make sure everyone got out

safely. neighbors say they heard fireworks going off before and after the flames sparked, but the official cause has not been released. kumasi: take a look at all of these fireworks in the east bay last night. this is a view of the skies above oakland despite high fire dangers there, neighborhood celebrations heated up this year. there is no city sanctioned show in the area, so what you're seeing here is likely all illegal fireworks. drew: 5:09, to the south bay right now. partly cloudy skies this morning. we are early tracking for the next couple of hours how humid it is out there. what you are looking out right now, these are dew point numbers. dew points measure how much moisture is in the atmosphere. when those numbers get above 60, like they are right now across a big portion of the bay area, it is humid out there. this is pretty common for us this time of year. the reason why doppler seven, along with satellite, this area

of low pressure is spitting off our coast line and sending additional water vapor into our atmosphere. we are feeling that in increased timidity. we are waiting for a cold front that would ease inherently today. we will ease the humidity late on wednesday, but you feel the drier air in by thursday. future trak dew point shows you today, we are stuck with this human, if not muggy air throughout the entire day. it is not the greatest hair day by any means. a similar story by wednesday. by thursday, we start to see numbers drop into the 40's. that is when drier, more comfortable air will move in. today, it is a humid day. we are starting out with morning cloud cover. sunshine is late to arrive today. it is really late in the afternoon. temperatures generally in the 60's and 70's. we will talk about warmer weather coming our way late in the week, and about seven minutes, but first let's say good morning to jobina and see how traffic is this morning. jobina: we do have a wood advisory for the ultimate pass. we are also seeing more vehicles on the roads this morning. we know a lot of people are off

which had people in at the time. no arrests have been made. reggie: while the nation celebrated the red, white, and blue, one group going green, the color designated for abortion rights. members of the organ nation over quote -- nation "is up for abortion rights" held a protest outside the san francisco ferry building during alameda's july 4 parade, a new abortion rights group that begin after the reversal of roe v. wade handed out flyers. >> honestly, a small bit of pushback. some people are little more vocal than others, some graciously just say no thank you. many, many people saying -- excited and saying thank you for being here because i felt powerless. reggie: abortion rights proponents also shared their opinion in martinez, bringing signs to express how they feel. thousands of people made their way to fisherman's wharf to watch the fireworks and celebrate the fourth. sharon stone was there.

especially if you like florida-like weather. you will find humidity hanging around hit the next couple of days. the doppler seven showing you a little bit of fog on the coast. this is in san rafael. partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. what we're dealing with is a human morning out there, low clouds, fog along the coast. we have this cloud cover with us through much of the morning. we will get more sunshine later in the afternoon. then, we will find a warmer pattern by the end of the week and upcoming weekend. right now, temperatures pretty elevated. middle to upper 60's for the most part, with humid conditions. six to three in the city, six to five in san jose, 66 in antioch, 63 in santa rosa. that's go hour-by-hour and timeout this fog. by 11: 30 a.m., still dealing with a lot of cloud cover overhead. as we wait until the afternoon, we will see a lot of cloud cover breakdown. i 3 p.m. through 5 p.m., brightest guys out there, but than a marine layer comes back later tonight and early tomorrow

july 5. kumasi: let's start with a check of our forecast with meteorologist drew tuma. drew: starting off of the 60's, humid this morning, areas of dense fog along coastlines. here's visibility, half moon bay down to .5 miles. elsewhere, overcast skies, but visibility is ok. middle to upper 60's this morning. he will step outside and feel that mild air. you are also going to feel the humidity. it is high today. it remains high the next two days. before we go, here is a look at the overcast skies. just a, the flag atop appear to be barely moving. here's how today shapes up. we will keep cloud cover through most of the morning. in the afternoon, a cold front moved through. that will wipe away a lot of the cloud cover. we are having late day centric, but it remains humid the next 24 hours. temperatures generally in the 60's and 70's later on. we will talk about when the humidity gets out of here in the next few minutes. kumasi: we are learning new

details about an attack in a july 4 parade in a chicago suburb. police now have a suspect in custody this morning. six people were killed and at least 31 others sent to the hospital to that hospital. two of the victims have been identified, one a grandfather, the other a woman who worked in a local synagogue. the police are looking into social media posts of the person in custody. he has not been charged. reggie: at the white house, president biden says he is shocked by the senseless nonviolence. pres. biden: we have a lot more work to do. we have to get this under control. we have to get this under control. but having said that, i just went to keep -- a slight moment of silence for all of those families. reggie: the president says he has talked to the governor of illinois and the mayor of highland park. he says he has offered the full support of the federal government to their communities. the president also said he is not going to give up on fighting the epidemic of gun violence.

we are seeing the consequences this morning of unsanctioned july 4 celebrations. we heard from a family that lost their home because of suspected illegal fireworks. liz kreutz is in lafayette this morning. >> good morning. as always on july 4, it was a very active night for firefighters. many fires sparked by fireworks. early this morning, there was a house fire that was believed to be sparked by fireworks in pittsburgh. our fighters responded the house fire early this morning. you can see the huge flames there. it is believed that fireworks started the fire in the backyard and those flames quickly moved into the home and spread up into the room. the family, including their dog, in tears as they evacuated their home. >> [indiscernible] >> it was all around going out. it wasn't necessarily my neighbors or anything, but we heard them all around. >> we could hear a lot. i just assumed they were on the

backside where the apartments are at or around the corner. just a sad situation. you can see the destruction that fire cause. the family says they are now homeless. this was one of just several fires in the east bay the holiday weekend. there was also a 6.5 acre rest fire in bay point. thank fully, that one is under control. the contra costa county fire protection district said that last night alone, they responded to some 30 fires. they know at least nine of those fires were sparked by fireworks, but they do believe the vast majority of the other fires were also sparked by fireworks and likely illegal fireworks as well. live here in lafayette, liz kreutz, abc 7 news. kumasi: thank you. developing news on the new electric fire burning in amador county, southeast of sacramento. calfire says it is burning with almost no containment. jobina is following from the live desk. jobina: the electro fire is

burning. at one point, it attracted nearly 60 to 80 people in apg&e building nearby. they were safely evacuated from that powerhouse last night. local sheriffs deputies are conducting door-to-door mandatory evacuations of the area for about 500 people. calfire teams say 100 structures are threatened right now and one firefighter has been injured. around 13,000 pg&e customers are also without power as a result of the fire this morning. we do have some good news. amador county sheriff's say the fire spread has slowed around 10 p.m. last night, so the cause of the fire is still under investigation. kumasi: thank you. the fire is now one of several fires burning up and down the state. you can keep an eye on all of them with this exclusive abc 7 wildfire tracker. it has the latest information on

fires and air quality where you're living. luck on the homepage of abc7news.com to check it out. president biden will be honoring four veterans today by awarding them that medal of honor. they all served in the army. one will receive a metal since he passed away. he saved his fellow soldiers by encouraging them to withdraw and a village under attack. he died in 1967 in a gunshot battle. each of them fought with persistence and endurance, even through their injuries. reggie: health experts are now setting a lower expectation for covid-19 vaccine efficacy, as breakthrough infections become pretty common. dustin dorsey explains this only highlights the importance of a vaccine to point out that is set to come out this fall. reporter: as the bay area celebrates independence day, it is safe to say we all wish we

were a nation independent from a pandemic. they fly, there were little impacts of fourth of july celebrations, but one doctor says covid-19 and omicron variant's are still causing issues within the community. >> infections in the community are very, very disruptive. people are staying home from work, from school, staying home to take care of those who are ill, and that leads to a lot of disruptions. reporter: a growing number of experts across the country say part of the reason is due to the efficacy of the vaccines. once touted as a way to stop covid in its tracks, the omicron variant's are invading the vaccines and case rates remain high across the bay area. however, the cdc recently said exited people are around 40 times more likely to survive an infection compared to the unvaccinated. vaccines mixed with boosters are even better in preventing severe illness and death. >> i am thrilled that we are keeping our hospitals pretty much intact, not having a flood of people in the hospitals, despite some any people getting

infected. in the old pre-vaccine days, i can guarantee you that we would be really behind the eight ball. reporter: he says any booster is better than no booster, but troubling new data from the cdc suggest single booster protection drops from 90 protection to 66%, by four months to six month out. that highlights the importance of a second booster for people over 50 years old. also, the need for an updated vaccine. >> is a never ending cycle. people are getting tired of it, rightly so. we need to address that with an updated vaccine that not only deals with severe disease, but can also hopefully prevent infection even more. reporter: the doctor says the vaccine is in a race against time, as the variance continue to mutate. it is held up in congress, but he hopes that it will be available in the fall. kumasi: a san francisco group is warming the public about a
