>> it was -- got jenkins out the door of the das office. as for the running and the recall, that is a blend of the itnto thisthinki she wasoing toa sjust camous one and turned out to be the most popular. it is interesting to note that if chesa boudin wants a rematch, he has the option of going for this november. he has a couple weeks to make up his mind to see if he wants to have a fair election against jenkins. we will see how that develops. that is one of the concerns the mayor has in her selection of jenkins. she wants somebody who can run against chesa boudin or someone else. that is the tricky part for london breed. not only do you have to pick someone who will run the office for the next few months, they have to do enough to win an election that is going to be wide open. there's going to be those that say you are picking somebody from the recall effort, you are

politicizing this and that is going to be controversial. on the other hand, she picked an african-american woman and that's going to be something difficult for chesa boudin to attack. we will see how this works out but it's going to be up to her in the next couple months to thread a very difficult needle. san francisco is already at the forefront of judicial reform. we have. very low incarceration rates. . we use a lot of diversion already. chesa boudin was seen as someone who took it too far and was not necessarily running a very efficient office on top of that. what the new da has to prove is that she can do something about the crime, that she will not overstep and become some hard-line order person, and three, get herself reelected. >> it's going to be challenging given the timeframe here. you are talking about taking over a whole office with a lot of attorneys. >> a lot of attorneys who have left.

first responders tell cbs 13 they closely monitored the fire and were able to keep the group safe allowing everyone to head home. scary situation, no doubt. let's get to abc 7 news meteorologist. mike nico for an update on conditions at the electra fire mike. what's happening? all right, let's take a look. larry kristen. hi, everybody during the afternoon hours. the winds have picked up just a little bit the temperatures a little bit warmer today in the humidity is also a little bit lower. we're at 83 degrees 39% humidity and 7 to 14 mile per hour winds the temperatures going to remain relatively decent not ideal but better than average at least through sunday and then those how they get. much warmer starting at least monday through thursday and at that same time the air will get much drier now the winds are going to dial down during the overnight hours. but the humidity levels aren't

then the smoked filled skies and plummeting air quality public health officials asking people to protect themselves, but a new study out of stanford suggests. we're not doing a great job using indoor air pollution monitors. we see that people have really bad indoor air quality during wildfire sam. heft neal is a research scholar at stanford part of a team that studied those behavior during wildfire season. we find that people do change their behavior when wildfire smoke is present, but that behavioral changes tend to vary with income using data from in-home air quality monitors internet searches and social media posts. they could see people in low-income communities were less likely to protect themselves from the potential dangers. multiple studies show long-term exposure to wildfire smoke can have detrimental impacts. respiratory health and more higher income groups. look to be more able to

self-protect in the sense that they search for information on air purifiers. they change their movement patterns, and those are changes. we don't see as much in low-income communities and it's a problem the bay area air quality management district is trying to remedy last year launching its clean air filtration program putting purifiers into people's homes. the need is just so great through community health centers and partnering nonprofits. they distributed roughly 1200 units. we have about a million dollars for this year. so we're hoping to at least hit that target and well efforts are well underway in low-income areas. stanford's researchers are quick to point out even in the wealthiest neighborhoods in the bay area. we see that when smoke is bad. a lot of people have terrible indoor air quality of finding he says that was somewhat surprising. we hypothesized that it mostly people's behavioral choices, but

francisco city hall a group of community advocates demanded accountability for pg&e this as a resolution was introduced to get the process started abc 7 news. anchor carina. nova has details as well as pg&e's response karina. well the speakers today asked for support from the san francisco board of supervisors and governor newsom to get rid. of pg&e their goal a public utility company designed and governed by the people of california. they say it wouldthey say it woy cleaner and more accessible. >> today we are dealing with fire after fire. it has become so normalized that you have young people saying it is fire season. wildfire season. let us not forget it was pg&e's gross negligence of directing money we pay in our bills to

upgrading infrastructure and actually moved it into bonuses for the ceo. for the investors of the corporation. >> we heard from jessica lehman, senior disability action. she said some of the most vulnerable people are ignored when pg&e shuts off the power during high wildfire conditions. >> if you need lifesaving medical equipment and especially if you are poor, what plan do you make? i'm suddenly going to not have my power go off. i'm suddenly going to not need oxygen, going to not need a power chair. this is irresponsible and reckless. on top of this they are now raising rates. >> supervisor connie chan introduced a legislation that a resolution urging governor newsom to remove the certificate which allows pg&e to use taxpayer dollars to repair equipment.

pg&e released a statement saying pg&e has a safety certificate issued by the office of energy infrastructure safety and our mitigation plan outlines the bold, comprehensive set of actions we are taking to continue providing safe and reliable energy amid a changing climate and evolving wildfire threat. we reached out to the governor's office about this matter and they told us, quote, the governor does not have a role in determining the issuance of a safety certificate. live in the newsroom, abc7news. >> a major announcement in the fight to end homelessness. santa clara county was named the 100th community to join an initiative created by the biden administration. zach fuentes has reaction from a local homeless advocates. reporter: homelessness continues to be a tragic issue in the bay area. santa clara county is one of the areas hit hardest. the most recent point in time showing it has some of the

highest number of homeless in the bay area, something the government has taken notice of. >> santa clara county has the fourth largest homeless population in the nation. >> the secretary of the u.s. department of housing and urban development announced santa clara county is the 100th community in its house america homeless initiative. >> leaders have plans to use the historic resources of the american rescue plan which provides to address our nation's homelessness crisis. >> the national goal of the initiative is to put 100 thousand homeless individuals or families into stable housing by december 31. it also aims to develop 20,000 units of affordable housing by the same deadline. santa clara county is a partner and has to set its own goals. something the county says it is already doing with its heading home campaign. >> heading home aims to use emergency housing vouchers to house families with young children including pregnant people and is on track to house 1200 families by october of

confidence the country could handle another major health threat. i think it is interesting most americans say they are not impressed with how the country has dealt with it. what do we mean by country? is it a collection of individuals? are we not pleased with all of our behavior, how we handled it? is that what it is? >> i would say things got a little bit politicized and we all could not get on the same page in fighting this thing. what has improved are the safety nets. like paxlovid, vaccines. we are not in the dark. >> i was watching a documentary on netflix and there are actually departments that were supposed to prevent what happened to us from happening. or if it did happen, they were supposed to step in and do a better job. they prepare for these events. what happened is what i really want to know. and will there be a congressional oversight to find out what happened? we spend millions, i don't know if it is billions, but millions preparing for these exact events

there may have been a shooting according to chp, somebody may have been hit, but police have not confirmed that report. >> are you ok? >> just yesterday we brought you this video of a freeway shooting last month. he much the same location, eastbound interstate 580 near 150th. dash cam video shows a bullet that went through the windshield of a car that was intended for another target. the couple in the car shared the video to help others understand how terrifying these shootings are. they were physically unharmed but shook up, which is understandable. >> it is terrifying. let's shift our attention now to the weather. humidity going away which i'm hearing from a lot of ladies, the hair is getting better. >> the friz factor is much betterz -- the frizz factor is much better.

it is how you approach your life and how you go about doing things. without my disabilities i would not have done all these cool opportunities. reporter: he has defied expectations thanks to his heart of a champion, one of many attributes learned while competing in the special olympics for 20 years. >> i made a lot of friends while improving my strength, self-confidence, and hand eye coordination. and i get to do a bunch of different sports. >> steinberg is a 16 sport athlete with special olympics. swimming, track and field, and football. the games have given back in more ways than one. his dedication has allowed him not only to become an athlete of the year for special olympics but helped him earn associate bachelors and masters degrees, leading to his job as a research assistant at stanford university. after doctors told him his iq would not surpass the average six-year-olds, his mother says
