troopers to apprehend migrants and send them back to the border. plus, the passenger plane that flew for hours with a massive hole in its side. and later the homeowner -- >> i'm going to open this, and you just scurry right out there. >> -- versus the chipmunk. good friday morning, everyone. i'm mona kosar abdi. >> i'm andrea fujii in for andrew. we begin with breaking news. japanese broadcaster nhk is reporting that former prime minister shinzo abe has died after being shot in broad daylight during a campaign speech. >> the shocking attack happening in japan, a nation with virtually no gun violence. abe's death was announced moments ago on national tv in japan. >> the gunman was taken into custody as authorities try to determine a motive. this morning, shinzo abe, the

former prime minister of japan, shot in broad daylight in western japan. around 11:30 a.m. local time, abe was giving a campaign speech near a train station in the city of nara when a male assailant reportedly shot him from behind with what appeared to be a homemade firearm. witnesses reported hearing two shots at least. [ speaking foreign language ] in this video abe can be seen giving a speech. a plume of smoke can be seen from behind the former prime minister. >> translator: after the second shot, we could see the gunpowder and a lot of white smoke. after the second shot, mr. abe collapsed, and people were applying cpr. >> reporter: abe clutched his bloodied chest as he collapsed on the street. security guards and bystanders running to his side. abe then rushed to the hospital in a helicopter.

video shows security tackling the suspected gunman. officials identifying him as a 41-year-old. witnesses saying he made no attempt to flee. >> translator: he was wearing a gray t-shirt and khaki-colored pants, and he was out of energy. he was not running away. he wasn't attempting to run away. he was just standing there. >> reporter: the 67-year-old abe was the longest serving prime minister in japan's history. he resigned in 2020 citing health reasons, but he remained an influential figure in japanese politics. the attack comes as a shock in a country that has some of the strictest gun laws in the world. the country with a population of more than 127 million rarely experiences more than ten deaths per year from gun violence. david sanger, who covered japan for "the new york times" tweeted, in my six years in japan, the only shootings i covered involved yakuza, arguing over territory. for political assassinations you have to go back to the 1930s.

>> our thoughts, our prayers are with him, with his family, with the people of japan. this is a very, very sad moment. again, japanese broadcaster nhk reports shinzo abe has died. moments ago we spoke with abc's anthony trotter in tokyo about just how shaken people in japan are following this attack. >> reporter: shootings are almost unheard of. guns are highly restricted here. this type of crime is very rare. i can't say i actually remember covering any kind of gun violence like this. now, there's been bombs, of course. there's been poisonings. there's been knife attacks, things of that nature but as far as guns go, they're almost nonexistent here. >> we'll bring you more information about the attack on shinzo abe throughout the morning here on abc. we turn now to the july 4th parade shooting near chicago. the first victims will be laid

to rest today as we learn more about the survivors and the troubled past of the suspect's family. this morning, newly revealed police reports show several disturbing incidents involving the suspected highland park parade shooter and his family. a report from april 2019 saying the suspect attempted to commit suicide by machete. less than six months later, police were called to the home again after the suspect threatened to kill everyone in the household. the suspect turning over multiple weapons including a 24-inch samurai sword. police submitting this document declaring the suspect a clear and present danger, but the suspect's father, who sponsored his son's gun permit, tells abc news he wasn't aware of the suicide attempt and believes the threat against his family was not genuine. >> making threats to the family, i think it was taken out of context where it's like just a child's outburst, whatever he was upset about. >> reporter: officials have also released this arrest card for the suspect's mother from 2002.

the alleged offense, endangering the life or health of a child. police not elaborating. ♪ a candlelight vigil was held last night in highland park for the seven victims of monday's rampage. funeral services for three of them are scheduled today. >> we have each other. we will lean on each other. we will lift each other up. >> reporter: we're now learning more about one of the youngest survivors of the massacre, 8-year-old cooper roberts, who is in critical condition on a ventilator. his family attends the july 4th parade each year. >> cooper was shot in the chest, and he suffered significant injuries including a severed spinal cord. >> reporter: doctors fear cooper may be permanently paralyzed. his twin brother luke and his mother julie were also shot, his mom waking up in a different hospital quickly requested to be discharged when she heard about cooper's condition.

>> quite frankly, she probably she could be at n's side. ard, >> as fohe says his s raised wi quote, good morals. he says he does not regret sponsoring the gun permit but says the system needs to be overhauled. turning to the economy, the labor department releases the monthly jobs report today, and it's expected to show a slowdown in hiring. analysts are expecting about 250,000 jobs were added in june compared to nearly 400,000 in may, and companies are planning more layoffs. new data shows the number of planned layoffs rose 57% in the last month. now to the surprise guilty plea from wnba star brittney griner. she's admitting to bringing cannabis oil into russia but says it was unintentional. the question now is, will the guilty plea help her get home faster? abc's em nguyen has more on griner's legal strategy. em, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mona. griner pleaded guilty in a courtroom outside moscow.

she had been held in russia for 141 days. she entered court yesterday handcuffed and holding a photo of her wife. she said she had no intention of breaking the law by bringing hashish oil through a russian airport. she said she was in a rush and experts say griner's guilty plea could be part of a wider strategy to get a lesser sentence and possibly set up a prisoner swap with the russians. >> by pleading guilty, she potentially does receive a lesser sentence. whether it is a severe sentence nevertheless is unclear. that will be at the discretion of the judge. the only way to get to a potential prisoner swap, and that's still uncertain, the only way to get to that stage would be to have her properly convicted in a russian court. >> if convicted, griner faces up to ten years in prison.

the white house says her guilty plea will not have any impact on efforts to free her. meanwhile, the family of paul whelan, an american held in russia since 2018, is speaking out. whelan's brother says he has mixed feelings about griner's case, and whelan's family says they never got a call from the president like brittney griner's wife did this week, mona. >> em, thank you. texas governor greg abbott has authorized a controversial new immigration policy. it's ordering state troopers and the national guard to apprehend migrants who entered the country illegally and send them back to the border. the move sets the stage for abbott to clash again with the federal government, which is responsible for immigration enforcement. border crossings are near the highest levels in about two decades, and abbott blames the biden administration for fueling the problem. derek chauvin, the former minneapolis police officer who murdered george floyd, has been sentenced to another 21 years in prison for violating floyd's civil rights. chauvin will serve the time concurrently with the 22-year

now an irs watchdog is taking a closer look. here's abc's rhiannon nally. >> this morning new calls for the head of the irs to be fired after "the new york times" reported that former top fbi officials james comey and andrew mccabe, well-known foes of former president trump, were subject to invasive irs audits. mccabe telling cnn -- >> i don't know if jim and i were targeted. but there are a lot of facts that point in that direction. >> reporter: comey was the former fbi director and mccabe was his deputy. both drew trump's ire. he attacked them frequently, calling for their prosecutions, even accusing them of treason. >> we were both targeted and basically run out of our jobs by that kind of pressure and harassment. >> reporter: several thousand people are selected for these rare audits out of more than 150 million people who file their taxes each year. both audits were under irs

commissioner charles red ig's leadership. redig was appointed by trump. >> the odds that the two of us would be selected for something that is supposedly a random program are really incalculable. >> reporter: the irs says the commissioner has now personally asked for a review of the audits. an irs spokesperson says any suggestion that comey and mccabe were targeted would be ludicrous and untrue. but democratic congressman bill pascrell, a long-time critic of the commissioner, says the irs auditing trump's enemies is a titanic scandal. this isn't the first time the irs is accused of going after political opponents. back in 2013 under president obama the acting commissioner was fired over accusations the irs was targeting conservative groups. mona? andrea? >> rhiannon, thank you. coming up, a historic move made in the nfl. but first, we celebrate hollywood icon james kan.
