valley. mid-50's around the shoreline. a couple of spots in the 60's. taking a live look at sutro tower, there is fog out there. the past couple of mornings we have been socked in with cloud eartinee that sunrise on the horizon. sunrise at 5:55 in the morning. it is a mostly sunny day. that translates to warmer weather. 90's make a return and 70's and 80's around the shoreline. the second half of the weekend, even hotter temperatures moving here. we will talk about that in eight minutes. >> breaking news from japan, former prime minister shinzo abe has died after getting shot during a campaign speech. he was campaigning ahead of this weekend's election for the parliament's upper house when gunshots rang out. across the world an outpouring of condolences going to japan. em joins us now from washington. good morning.

em: world leaders are expressing anguish at the loss of japan's former prime minister who died after a brazen attack that happened in the middle of the day at a political event. this morning, the shooting death of japan's former prime minister shinzo abe sending shockwaves across the country. around 11:30 a.m. local time, the 67-year-old ex leader was giving a campaign speech when a man reportedly shot him from behind with what appeared to be a homemade firearm described as a shotgun. witnesses that her two shots. >> after the second shot, we could see the gunpowder and a lot of white smoke. after the second shot, he collapsed and people were flying. em: abe seen clutching his chest with security guards rushing to his side.

he was rushed to the hospital. video shows officials tackling the gunmen, identify him as a 41-year-old. he made no attempt to flee. >> he was not running away. he was just standing there. em: abe was the longest-serving prime minister in japan's history, often outspoken on strengthening the military and the country's role in foreign affairs. u.s. secretary antony blinken sending his condolences. >> our thoughts, our prayers are with him, his family, and the people of japan. this is a very sad moment. em: the attack stunning a country with some of the strictest gun laws in the world. japan with a population of more than 127 million rarely experiences more than 10 deaths per year from gun violence. the u.s. ambassador called abe

an outstanding leader and unwavering ally to the u.s.. abc 7 news. >> san francisco mayor london breed will swear in her pick for the next district attorney. the ceremony is expected to start at noon at city hall and the pick one month after voters recalled jason. reporters are live with the details. reporter: the morning. brooke jenkins is no straighter to politics. she is a former assistant district attorney who quit her job and led the effort. she has been appointed by mayor london breed. some say breed chose jenkins because of her experience as a prosecutor. jenkins has said she will restore accountability and consequences to our criminal justice system here in san francisco. she left her job in october after clashing with boudin over his management style and what she considered lacks policies toward criminals. he really used enhancements and

he vowed to not charge minors as adult. jenkins is seen as someone who will continue as a progressive but not go to the extremes her predecessor was criticized for. >> we do not want to become some traditional tough on crime via meant where we only use -- tough on crime environment. for me it is finding that balance between when have we given enough chances to where we have to move to a different course and finding that balance so that we can maintain our status as a compassionate city, but also restore public safety. reporter: jenkins will hold the position until november when voters will decide the next d.a. in a special election. she says she will run. jenkins will be sworn in at a ceremony at 12:00 noon at city hall. abc7news. >> community advocates are

demanding pg&e be held accountable, citing wildfires as one reason why the company should be replaced. the group wants to see a public utility company designed and governed are the people of california. they say it would make energy more cleaner, affordable, and accessible. >> it was pg&e's gross negligence of directing money that we pay in our bills to upgrade infrastructure and actually moved into bonuses for the ceos. >> if you need lifesaving medical equipment and especially if you are poor, what in the world plan do you make? i am sadly going to not have my -- suddenly going to not have a power go out, i am sadly not going to need oxygen. >> the san francisco supervisor introduced a resolution urging governor newsom to withhold pg&e's safety certificate. that allows the utility to use rate pair dollars for damages

their equipment causes. pg&e said in part, "pg&e has had a valid safety certificate and our mitigation plan outlines the bold comprehensive set of actions we are taking to continue providing safe reliable energy amid a changing climate and evolving wildfire threat." we reached out to the governor's office and they told us "the governor does not have a role in determining the issuance of a safety certificate." >> a second case of monkeypox has been confirmed in santa clara county. authorities are working with the health department and the cdc. they called it a probable case on june 30 and now it has been confirmed to be monkeypox. further information about this person who tested positive is not going to be released because of medical privacy. according to health officials the number of monkeypox cases in california has more than doubled in the last week. 300,000 u.s. schoolchildren are under the age of five have gotten at least one shot of the

vaccine. that is about 1.5% of the 19.5 million children. it is a modest start to vaccinating the youngest group but officials say that number is in line with what they expected. pfizer and moderna got emergency use authorization for kids under five last month. >> the san francisco muni system is looking to make infrastructure changes. part of the $160 million of grant funding will improve their liability of the k and n train lines. there will also be funding for improvements. the biggest contribution will go toward a project to increase market streets subway capacity with an automated train control system. drew: we are taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza where we have clear skies from this vantage point. not nearly as much fog this morning as previous mornings.

we expect a lot of sunshine today and warmer temperatures this afternoon. air quality today is good across the board. a couple of areas of moderate air quality but over the next 48 hours, we can breathe easy. dew points, talking about these numbers a lot. really humid our monday. these numbers have been dropping as the week goes on. drier air has been moving in. dew points in the upper to lower 50's. that is comfortable. we will enjoy that lower humidity today. by noon, sunshine across the board. along the coast we are seeing sunshine before lunchtime. temperatures quickly take off. later today we will see 90's make a return inland. around the shoreline, 70's and 80's later today. 69 in the city. 75 in oakland. 81 in san jose. 90 in antioch. 88 in santa rosa. 85 in san rafael. palo alto 77 degrees. we are warming up today.

reggie: twitter started laying off employees as elon musk's take over looms. the company has already stopped hiring and backfilling as part of the talent acquisition team. twitter says the move was due to changed business requirements. musk may follow through as he would have to pay a $1 billion breakup fee if he were to back out of the deal. the wall street journal reports that deal is in peril with musk's team not being able to verify those claims. kumasi: another shooting on an east bay freeway.

chp officers responded along eastbound 580 in san leandro yesterday afternoon. after that, victim with a gunshot wound ended up at eden medical center. as amanda del castillo explains, this is the second shooting on that stretch in a matter of weeks. amanda: the aftermath of yet another shooting on a bay area roadway. two cars riddled with bullet holes being towed from eden medical center in castro valley. the alameda county sheriff's office confirms at least one victim at the hospital was shot on the freeway. it happened on eastbound 580 in san leandro thursday after 4:00 p.m.. sky 7 captured the scene and the traffic that followed. cars stretched for miles. thursday's incident comes one day after an east bay couple decided to share their chilling story and shocking video. >> are you ok? amanda: footage shows garret mason and his fiancee in the

middle of a shootout. they were leaving work and similar to thursday's incident, they were heading eastbound on 580 in san leandro. the city's mayor addressing the violence. >> it has to be a two-pronged approach. we have to attack it right now and go out to people doing this now. we also have to bring generations up to not have this kind of violence. i believe we need to do more than we are doing right now at the federal level with gun control. amanda: chp has not released details about what led to the shooting, now adding to a list of more than 80 freeway shootings in the bay area in the last four years. >> unfortunately, we were in the wrong place at the wrong time. people have commented if we were faster or slower, how could that have changed where the bullet is. we cannot think too much about the one instance.

amanda: dozens of drivers and passengers on the freeway hit by bullets, sometimes caught in the crossfire, other times targeted. >> it is not something we should tolerate. we cannot tolerate this. amanda: amanda del castillo, abc7news. kumasi: the governor's office confirmed that cameras will be installed at some intersections along interstate 8080, 580, highway 24, and international boulevard. reggie: a former president has been convicted on multiple charges of fraud. a jury deliberated four days and determined he defrauded both investors and patients. the founder elizabeth holmes was found on the same charges but was only found guilty of defrauding investors. the u.s. attorney read a statement out of the courthouse. >> i want to thank the jury for navigating through the compact issues presented by this case. reggie: he will be sentenced in

november. holmes in september. kumasi: bart officials say there will be new electric scooters. riders can use them to plan trips using the trip planner or the website. this will show a map of where you can find the scooters or tell you where walking or driving is a quicker option. reggie: a food event is coming back to san francisco ferry building. food wise is bringing back its summer bash sunday night. for $165 guests will get to try food from dozens of restaurants and breweries inside and outside of the building. proceeds will go to the farmers market, food access initiatives, and education programs that serve thousands of bay area residents. kumasi: this looks like so much fun. reggie: i wish it were sunday night. kumasi: i know. it might be worth it.

the sun is up officially at 5:55. already 70's away from the coast by lunchtime. into the afternoon, 70's and 80's around the shoreline. 90's return inland. even warmer weather for part of the weekend. we will show you that coming up in eight minutes. kumasi: thank you. breaking this morning, the former prime minister of japan shinzo abe has died. abc news reports he died at the hospital overnight after being shot during a campaign speech in japan. after the shooting, he was airlifted but his condition was grave at that time. authorities have a male suspect in custody. they recovered a weapon at the scene. japanese media is reporting it was a homemade gun. this news has shocked japan because gun violence there is extremely rare because they have very strict gun control laws. with a population of more than 127 million people, the country rarely sees more than 10 deaths per year by gun violence. reggie: one month after san

franciscans voted to recall the district attorney, the new district attorney will be sworn in today. a live look at city hall, not exactly, but it is the city. the swearing-in ceremony is set for noon and brooke jenkins will take over. reporter: good morning. brooke jenkins is no stranger to politics. she is a former assistant district attorney who quit and let the recall effort to oust the former da. some say the mayor appointed jenkins because of her experience as a prosecutor. jenkins said she will restore accountability and consequences to the criminal justice system here in san francisco. she left her job in october after clashing with boudin over his management style and what she considered lax policies toward criminals. jenkins says the city should

civil rights charges in the death of george floyd. he pleaded guilty last december to violated floyd's civil rights. his plea deal calls for a sentence of 20 to 25 years in prison. his new sentence will be served at the same time as is 22.5 year sentence for his murder conviction at the state level. floyd's brother talked about the sentence yesterday. >> i wish he would have said how sorry he was but that is not going to be my brother back. -- that is not going to bring my brother back. no matter how much i want him to say different things, it will not bring my brother back. kumasi: former officers alexander kung and tao were also charged. they have pled not guilty. that trial will start october 24. reggie: brittney griner has pleaded guilty in a russian court to drug charges. she says she accidentally packed

vaped cartridges fill with hashish oil. she has been in custody ever since february. calls for her to be released are growing louder. she says she wants to give further testimony. she will be back in court july 14. if convicted, she faces 10 years in prison. the u.s. is currently working on a prisoner swap. kumasi: this morning, new police reports are laying out more about the deadly july 4 shooting in illinois. the suspects father is also sharing why he sponsored his son's gun permit and more on his son's problematic past. mona kosir-abdi has the details. mona: police reports show several disturbing incidents involving the suspected highland park parade shooter and his family. a report saying the suspect attempted to commit suicide by machete. less than six month later, police were told -- called to

the home again after the suspect threatened to kill everyone in the household. the suspect turning over multiple weapons including a 24 inch samurai sword. police submitting this document declaring the suspect a clear and present danger but the suspects father who sponsored his sons gun permit because abc news he was not aware of the suicide attempt and believes the threat against his family was not genuine. >> making threats to the family was taken out of context. it is a child's outburst, whatever he was upset about. mona: a candlelight vigil was held last night in highland park with the seven victims of monday's rampage. funeral services for three of them are scheduled today. >> we have each other. we will lean on each other. we will lift each other up. mona: we are learning more about one of the youngest survivors of the massacre. eight-year-old cooper roberts was in critical condition on a ventilator. his family attends the july 4

parade each year. >> cooper was shot in the chest and he suffered significant injuries including several -- a severed spinal cord. mona: doctors fear he may be permanently paralyzed. his twin brother and mother were also shot. his mom waking up in a different hospital, quickly requested to be discharged when she heard about cooper's condition. >> quite frankly, she probably should not have been discharged, but she insisted so that she could be at her son's side. >> the suspects father says h is son was raised with good morals. he says the system is to be overhauled. mona kosir-abdi, abc news, new york. reggie: scary moments at a starbucks. a bmw slammed into a window at the coffee shot on homestead road. sky 7 overhead as the santa clara fire department responded.

the santa clara county sheriff's office shared this image of the car inside the store. two people suffered minor injuries. they went to the hospital. the driver was a woman in her 60's and was not hurt. officials say she is cooperating with investigators and it took more than an hour to clear the area. kumasi: we are getting new details about the ikea store that will open in san francisco. the examiner is reporting the stollar -- the store has filed applications with the planning department this week. the ground floor of the shopping center on market street has been empty for the -- for over a year now with construction of the furniture store postponed. the shopping center will include additional shops and office space. there will also be a garage. construction will last four months and this will be ikea's first downtown location in the country. reggie: heads up if you are driving on highway 101. caltrans will close two lanes tonight. the closure starts at 10:00 p.m.

reggie: a recently renovated playground is back open. dion lim mceed the opening of the program -- the playground. there are new structures, and turf, and climbing wall. the playground is basically a backyard for so many kids in the city. it was designed by an architect who was also a parent of children. kumasi: this looks fun. reggie: it does. i thought we would see dion go down the slide. where is that video? kumasi: tonight, the antioch waterpark is hosting its first ever after dark event. this is the first one in a series of special events over the summer.
