stump speech near kyoto. the shooting happening around 11:30 a.m. local time was caught on camera. this video shows abe giving a speech near a train station in the city of nara. then a plume of smoke can be seen behind him. witnesses say they heard two shots. the 67-year-old collapsing. first responders immediately rushed in. >> translator: after the second shot, we could see the gunpowder and a lot of white smoke. after the second shot, mr. abe collapsed, and people were applying cpr. >> reporter: abe was rushed to the hospital with no vital signs. >> translator: and there have been gun wounds in two locations in the neck. >> reporter: the weapon recovered at the scene appears to have been a homemade one and the suspected shooter, 41-year-old tetsuya yamagami, seen here moments after the -- seen here moments before the

assassination. he did not leave. he was immediately taken into custody. >> he was not running away. he wasn't attempting to run away. he was just standing there. >> reporter: abe was a popular leader and became the country's longest serving prime minister. at the time of the attack, he was giving a speech in support of a party member ahead of parliamentary elections this weekend. despite stepping down, abe remained a major power broker both domestically and internationally, helping shape american foreign policy in the region for years. secretary of state antony blinken reacting overnight. >> our thoughts, our prayers are with him, with his family, with the people of japan. this is a very, very sad moment. >> reporter: for many, abe's assassination was unthinkable. gun violence is extremely rare in japan and the country has some of the strictest gun laws in the world. with 127 million people, japan rarely sees more than ten gun deaths a year. >> shootings are almost unheard of.

guns are highly restricted here. this type of crime is very rare. now, there's been bombings, of course. there's been poisonings, there's been knife attacks, things of that nature, but as far as guns go they're almost nonexistent here. >> reporter: here's what we know so far about the suspected shooter. he's been identified as 41-year-old tetsuya yamagami, from the city of nara, he's a former soldier. according to japan's local broadcasters he told investigators he was unhappy with the former prime minister and that he intended to kill him. george? >> okay, lama, thanks very much. it's hard to overstate how much shock japan is in from this shooting. abe was one of the most consequential leaders in postwar japan and have no history of assassination since world war ii and as lama's piece pointed out, ten or fewer gun violence deaths a year in that country. that is such a shock for this country.

>> certainly is and our thoughts are with him and his family members. we move on now to the surprise guilty plea by wnba star brittney griner admitting to unintentionally bringing cannabis oil into russia and now facing up to ten years in a russian penal colony. rulli joi more on the potential strategy behind that plea. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: hey, amy, good morning. yeah, many experts are saying that this guilty plea was really the only outcome possible. this morning, brittney griner waking up in russian custody for the 141st day after pleading guilty to drug charges saying -- >> i would like to plead guilty on the charges, but i had no intention on breaking any russian law. >> reporter: griner's facing up to ten years in prison. seen here ushered into court shackled and gripping a photo of her wife cherelle. inside the courtroom, the 6'9" phoenix mercury center was confined in a steel white cage. she's been in detention since february. after russian police say they found vape cartridges in her luggage containing hashish oil,

illegal in russia. in court griner saying it was a mistake. >> i was in a rush packing and the cartridges accidentally ended up in my bag. >> reporter: griner's lawyers outside of court saying accountability was important to her. >> considering her personality and that she's a role model to many young people, she is responsible for her actions. >> reporter: experts say a guilty plea may help speed up what many see as the inevitable outcome, negotiations. >> it will get her closer to the verdict that we know the russians will give which is guilty. that will allow for the next phase to occur and potentially a break for her perhaps in the diplomacy. >> reporter: in court thursday, a letter from president biden hand delivered to griner responding to her plea for help where she wrote, i'm terrified i might be here forever. trevor reed knows all too well the reality of being a russian prisoner. detained for nearly three years. >> there's pretty horrible conditions there. there's rats, food there could

be, you know, really bad and the summer, it's very hot there. there's no air-conditioning, obviously or even fans inside of those cells. they do not like americans and they don't try to hide that. >> reporter: in her letter griner pleading with the president, please don't forget about me and the other american detainees, which include former marine paul whelan who has been detained for over 3 1/2 years. >> i hope that president biden and his administration will do everything possible to get both, you know, brittney and paul out of russia and that they will do that immediately. >> reporter: the white house press secretary said brittney's guilty plea will have no impact on negotiations. they also said that they're doing everything they can to bring not only brittney griner but also paul whelan home. t.j.? >> yeah, there are dozens of americans around the world actually being detained unlawfully, some would say, and

wrongfully. thank you for that, maggie. we want to turn now to the latest jobs report. a lot of people keeping an eye on it to see what it will mean for the economy. our chief economics correspondent rebecca jarvisn the floor of the new york stock exchange for us with insight. good morning to you, rebecca. >> reporter: t.j., two key questions for the economy now, has inflation peaked and are we facing a recession? today's jobs report says the market remains strong, there are plentiful jobs, 272,000 created in the month of june, unemployment steady. some of the concerns have been that the inflation, the rise in prices we have seen along with the federal reserve hiking interest rates could start eating into those jobs, it doesn't appear to be the case at this point. the key thing for consumers out there is what's going on with your wage, up 5.1%.

compared to prices 6.0%. >> we'll be waiting for that, rebecca. now to the latest in the july 4th parade shootings. funerals for two of the victims and a memorial service for a third will be held today. this all coming as we learn more about the survivors and what they're facing. alex perez has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, new details on those harrowing moments at that fourth of july massacre in highland park, illinois. the parade an annual tradition for the roberts family ending in tragedy. >> keeley and cooper were both shot that day and luke also suffered injuries from shrapnel. >> reporter: family friend anthony loizzi said luke has been treated and released from the hospital. his twin brother cooper in critical condition on a ventilator. >> cooper was shot in the chest and he suffered significant injuries including a severed spinal cord. >> reporter: doctors now fearing he may be permanently paralyzed.

meanwhile, investigators now digging into the alleged shooter's background and any possible missed red flags. lake county police commissioner chris covelli telling abc news that authorities had actually been called to the accused gunman's home, mostly for domestic reasons, a number of times. state police officials are investigating whether this suspect should have been approved for a gun permit in the first place. george? >> okay, alex. we're going to go to washington now, where president biden will sign an executive order today aimed at protecting access to reproductive health care services. it comes exactly two weeks after the supreme court's decision to overturn roe versus wade. rachel scott has the latest. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. for weeks the white house has been under pressure. democrats have been calling for a more urgent response to protect access to abortion. so in just a few hours the president will be signing this executive order. it would take steps to protect access to medication abortion and push back on efforts to keep women from traveling across state lines. it would also move to protect patients' sensitive medical

how to track the retail giants who have the lowest prices. that's coming up. robes? now to new details though on the dramatic arrest of that yoga instructor accused of murdering her romantic rival. u.s. marshals say kaitlin armstrong used multiple aliases and then traveled to costa rica on someone else's passport all in an effort to avoid capture. our chief national correspondent matt gutman is in austin with more on all this. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, amy, you've got it right. multiple aliases, two passports, cosmetic surgery under the name of one of those aliases, and authorities now revealing that kaitlin armstrong might have been able to stay in costa rica for a long time had it not been for a single tip that helped them piece together her escape from austin to new york to that remote costa rica beach town. this morning, those startling revelations from authorities about murder suspect kaitlin armstrong's escape from the u.s. almost as if ripped from a spy thriller. >> it was discovered armstrong used different names, aliases

under the alias of beth martin, liz and ari martin. armstrong used these names at yoga studios and other lodging since her arrival in costa rica on may 18th. >> reporter: authorities say the 34-year-old yoga instructor had two passports, multiple identities and changed her appearance. a receipt under a different name in her possession for plastic surgery. >> i will say she had a bandage on her nose with a little bit of discoloration under her eyes. her statement was that it came from a surfboard incident and i think we'll leave it at that. >> reporter: for more than six weeks she had eluded authorities who say on may 11th she flew into a jealous rage and gunned down pro cyclist moriah wilson who she thought was involved with her boyfriend. surveillance video showing her jeep grand cherokee seen driving near the house where wilson was staying at the time of the murder. on may 13th austin police questioned her at the station but said they could not detain her because of a technicality. within 24 hours armstrong sold

that jeep grand cherokee to carmax for $12,200. the next day, may 14th, she boarded a series of flights from austin to houston to new york, then she disappeared. >> armstrong boarded the flight and fled to international territory by presenting a passport that did not belong to her, but belonged to someone that was closely associated with her. >> reporter: with no trace of armstrong, the u.s. marshals upgrading it to a major case on june 6th. then they got a tip that led them to discover she had traveled to costa rica. [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: the sub director of the immigration police in costa rica said, i think she came here because she must have thought it would be easier because there's so many tourists and she would avoid capture because of that, but at the same time we're a small country, so we're able to find people quickly. >> and we believe after this month and a half investigation she really got comfortable. she felt that she had gotten

away but really within the long arm of the law. >> reporter: costa rican authorities telling us that armstrong was arrested at first she was quiet and compliant but she refused to admit her real identity and people we spoke to who met her there in costa rica and authorities saying that eventually being an international fugitive took a toll on her that when she was arrested she looked exhausted. amy? >> all right, matt gutman, thank you for that. we're going to bring in abc news chief legal analyst dan abrams for more. i guess you heard that authorities said it was easy to find her but had to go to great lengths to track her down. it wasn't that easy. >> the last time they know it's her is at laguardia airport. that's the last time she used her name, her passport. they get a tip that takes them to newark airport but the tip doesn't tell them where she's going. so then they have to figure out, okay, which passport did she use? they're able to figure that out. that takes them to costa rica but now she's got -- they've got

to find out, okay, where in costa rica is she using multiple aliases, following her around to multiple places. no one called this in and said she's here, she's here. so they had to do police work to find her and ultimately were able to find the bus that she had taken across the country. that takes them to the right place and eventually they find her. but it's a fascinating story when you look at piece by piece how they actually got her. >> and then she went to great lengths to avoid capture going as far as police say they believe she had plastic surgery to change her appearance. could any of her actions in terms of fleeing the country and how she tried to avoid capture be used against her in court? >> absolutely. consciousness of guilt. it happens all the time. we see it introduced against a defendant to say, you knew you were guilty and, therefore, we should be able to use that against you. >> and then there's this passport. u.s. marshals saying she used someone else's passport who was close to her, who looked like her. there are some guesses as to who that may have been. could that person be in legal

going to feature breakout k-pop group aespa. they are going to take the stage. there they are as we speak. they'll be performing live coming up. we're heading out to the park ourselves shortly. >> we're looking forward to that. we're follow a lot of news this morning, including the breaking news. former japanese prime minister shinzo abe, that country's lngest serving leader, was gunned down while giving a speech. the country is in shock right now. the shooter in custody. want to go back to our foreign correspondent lama hasan. good morning, lama. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, george. as you can imagine, tributes from around the world have been pouring in for japan's longest serving prime minister, shinzo abe. health officials announcing that he sustained two gunshot wounds, one to the right side of his neck, the other penetrating his heart. and doctors were trying to save his life for five hours but sadly they just couldn't stop the bleeding. overnight, a brazen assassination in broad daylight. former japanese prime minister shinzo abe gunned down during a stump speech near kyoto.

the shooting happening around 11:30 a.m. local time was caught on camera. this video shows abe giving a speech near a train station in the city of nara. then a plume of smoke can be seen behind him. witnesses say they heard two shots. the 67-year-old collapsing. first responders immediately rushed in. >> translator: after the second shot, mr. abe collapsed and people were applying cpr. >> reporter: abe was rushed to the hospital with no vital signs. >> translator: and there have been gun wounds in two locations in the neck. >> reporter: the weapon recovered at the scene appears to have been a homemade one and the suspected shooter, 41-year-old tetsuya yamagami, seen here moments before the assassination. he did not flee after firing on abe. he was tackled by security and immediately taken into custody. abe was a popular leader and became the country's longest serving prime minister. at the time of the attack, he

was giving a speech in support of a party member ahead of parliamentary elections this weekend. so here's what we know so far about the suspected shooter -- he's been identified as 41-year-old tetsuya yamagami from the city of nara. he's a former soldier and according to japan's national broadcaster, he told nhk that he was unhappy with the former prime minister and that he intended to kill him. george? >> lama hasan, thanks very much. t.j.? to the latest now on the monthly jobs report. want to head back to rebecca jarvis on the floor of the new york stock exchange with more insight and hopefully some questions going to be answered for us this morning. hey, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning, t.j. what we just learned about the u.s. economy is that the jobs market remains strong. a much stronger than expected jobs report out this morning from the labor department. 372,000 jobs created in the month of june. that's about 100,000 more jobs than economists were forecasting. the unemployment rate steady, near historic lows at 3.6%.

>> yeah, that mother is speaking out this morning because she does not want any other parent or child to go through this again. and as you're about to see she wants policies tightened and enforced. this morning, a mother speaking out after she says her child was allowed to walk off an american airlines flight alone while traveling as an unaccompanied minor. monica gillam's 12-year-old daughter kimber was flying from chattanooga to miami last saturday to visit her father when mom says she received a distressing call from the airline. >> the manager from american airlines called and said, you know, your child is missing. and i was like, how did you lose my child? you know, how do you lose an unaccompanied minor? >> reporter: gillam says her daughter felt like she was supposed to get up once everyone began to de-plane and a flight attendant even waved good-bye. there aren't any federal regulations when it comes to according to american's website its policy says that employees will board the child early and then escort them off the plane to meet their guardian at the

gate. gillam says kimber's father had to use facetime to help the 12-year-old navigate her way through the airport to meet him at baggage claim. >> she was nervous and she was scared, but she did exactly what her dad told her to do to get her to safety. >> reporter: american airlines telling abc news it cares deeply about its young passengers and is committed to providing a safe and pleasant travel experience for them. adding, it's taking the incident very seriously and is looking into what occurred. for parents with kids traveling alone this summer, the travel mom emily kaufman says it's important to make sure they are prepared. >> inform them about the plan on the plane, getting off the plane and when they're in need of something that they can ask a flight attendant. >> and a few other tips from the travel mom, give your child a list of important contacts and phone numbers and put them in their pocket as well as their carry-on. also consider using a tracker like find my friends on their phone and of course, monitor that flight in case it arrives early or late. t.j., some scary moments there

for those parents. >> well, any parent that doesn't know where their child is is scary. now to one student's incredible weight loss story. she started by walking and she lost 200 pounds. our janai norman back with a look at what this woman gained by losing so much. hey there, janai. >> hey, t.j., good morning. so she eventually added more activities but it started with just walking. 15 minutes every day, even taking breaks when she needed to but investing that time into herself turned into a habit that became a lifestyle. for shanisha walking was the key step in her journey battling bullying and mental health hurdles. at her heaviest she weighed 442 pounds and she says the bullying got worse when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and aspberger syndrome in high school. she even attempted suicide and then hurricane harvey hit. >> i lost everything i owned. my mental health was not really well and i just -- i started
