[ laughter ] "she is probably one of the most horrible people on earth, a close third after jimmy kimmel and stephen colbert. i thought comedians were supposed to be funny?" [ laughter ] men have had all kinds of weird reactions to last week's abortion ruling. ever since the supreme court struck down roe v. wade, urologists have seen a spike in vasectomies. this just goes to show you that men really will do anything to avoid wearing a condom. [ cheers and applause ] back in 1919, after a very long fight, congress finally passed the 19th amendment, which gave women like me the right to vote. but female suffrage was only half the battle. which is why tonight, i'd like to propose a new amendment to the constitution. amendment 28, end male suffrage. voting is a huge responsibility,

[ laughter ] and for all you men who don't understand what's at stake here, let me tell you about a real thing that happens in nature right now. it's called parthenogenesis. this is a scientific phenomenon where animals that used to reproduce sexually, start reproducing asexually. that means without the use of sperm. they've seen it happen to a shark, an anaconda, most recently a condor. evolutionarily, we're a thousand years behind animals. so men, if you don't listen to what i'm saying right now, you're going to become [ bleep ] extinct. on a more positive and personal note, i want to thank everybody for all your online petitioning and tweeting to get me into my high school hall of fame. because you have managed to one-up my high school because i just got word moments ago that i am being inducted into the 2022 new jersey hall of fame. [ laughter ] but i do have two dogs. their names are bert and berniece. i love them, but there has been some tension between us lately, because i've noticed they seem to greatly prefer my housekeeper, mabelle, over me. home, and she's really positioned about it. >> chelsea: so my housekeeper mabelle, when she takes them on the weekend, she sends pictures of berniece in bed with her -- one of her sons, fernando, and they sleep together in the bed, and they look like, you know -- pretty close. i've never seen her sleep under the covers in that situation with me. i've tried to do that, obviously. i want to know, are those pictures that my housekeeper is sending me to taunt me? or is she really doing that with other people? >> you're asking me to read your housekeeper, talk to her. >> chelsea: i'm asking you to read about what she's up on the weekends with fernando. >> you move around a lot. >> chelsea: move around in bed a lot? >> that's what she said, she moves around. >> chelsea: if i'm having sex, i'm moving around. sometimes i'm stationary, depends on what night of the week it is. is she spending the night with fernando under the covers? is that a real situation or are the photos staged? >> let me ask, let me ask. [ laughter ] i want to say that that is not true. when i was there, i didn't see with a sheep. anything fishy - >> no. [ laughter ] i think it has happened. [ laughter ] but not as much as you might think. >> chelsea: why do you think it has that kind of reputation? >> just stories, you know. >> chelsea: it's funny, i went on a farm in wales with these two brothers who ran a sheep farm. so i saw them in action rounding up the sheep with an australian shepherd, those are the dogs they use, right? >> that kind of action. >> chelsea: it wasn't penetration, nothing like that. >> probably -- i was there for a wedding about four weeks ago, actually. >> chelsea: oh, okay, so recently. >> recently. very beautiful. the adjacent town is a place called balson. a couple of friends of mine were getting married on a hilltop overlooking the sea. a very, very beautiful part of the world. i'm incredibly lucky to come from such a special place. >> chelsea: what is the name of the town you are from?t primara lled -- north part of [ eang welsh ] [ applause ] >> chelsea: gosh. >> yeah. think it was just about getting tourist trade in, you know? >> chelsea: that sounds like something a sheep might say. [ laughter ] just kidding. when was the last time you were in the home that you grew up in or the town that you grew up in? >> i moved when i was 12 to where my family still live. and, i mean, the last time i was there for a really extended

period of time was just after all the elton john stuff. i mean, the world obviously stopped. i went back to being in wales for about six months. that's kind of the longest i've been there -- >> chelsea: for the lockdown and everything? >> for the lockdown and everything, yeah. i went back and immediately started just eating. you know. pastry, growing to the size of a house. >> chelsea: well, i think that was right after, right? you won your golden globe for the movie. [ cheers and applause ] then you went back home. so did you have -- how did your family handle you being a big, big star when you came home? >> well, yeah, my family are pretty down to earth. my two little sisters are completely unimpressed. my 12-year-old sister now has a phone. so she's -- sort of tends to -- i get the impressions they'll sometimes say, can you send me a selfie? why do you want a selfie? you realize it's one of the kids in school who want it. i don't know. yeah, i was there for about six months.

it was lovely, actually. weirdly, stressful and horrible as the pandemic was for so many people, i sort of found it to be quite a nice sabbatical. i kind of was able to just chill and be by the sea. yeah, it was nice. >> chelsea: was it nice to be with your family? my family invaded my house during the pandemic. my sister has three adult children, and i didn't appreciate that at all. [ laughter ] i didn't want -- i mean, the pandemic was fun for me in the beginning. >> yes. >> chelsea: first two weeks like spring break, oh my god, party at my house solo. >> yeah, yeah. >> chelsea: then after it went on and on it was like, you know, by the third month, i was ready to get the party started again, out of my house. >> yeah. well, yeah. i mean, the people you love most in the world are the people you love most in the world and that's great. but they are also the people that drive you the most insane. >> chelsea: yeah, yeah. >> it was nice. it was good being with family, i enjoyed it. >> chelsea: good. i know you are close friends with elton john, ever since you did the movie? you guys are still -- >> yeah. [ laughter ] yeah, yeah. we are still friends.

there are instances of brits doing really good versions. >> chelsea: no, brits do good versions. >> the other -- >> chelsea: there are instances. you guys are better at accents, americans are better at the opposite. >> i had a great dialect coach. there's a really wonderful -- he's now a very dear friend who was there for the whole shoot. he's an american who married a brit. so i met him in london. his name's carlto bellamy, to any actors out there, if you want a great dialect coach, carlto is your man. he'd color code the whole script for me, into phonetic sounds, so i could learn the accent. i enjoy that part of it. it's nice to be able to kind of turn into somebody else. >> chelsea: that's your job as an actor? >> it's a good job, right? >> chelsea: excellent, more with taron egerton right after this. "black bird" on apple tv plus. you shot in a real prison? >> yeah, we did. i don't know who made that decision. so, so stressful being in a real prison in august in new orleans. yeah. it was a lot. it was a lot. but, you know, gives it authenticity and all that. [ laughter ] >> chelsea: have you ever been in a real prison? have you ever been arrested i should say? >> i -- i kind of want to be able to say yes. i feel like it would give me some edge. but no, not at all. [ laughter ] >> chelsea: are you a squeaky-clean kind of guy? >> am i -- i don't want to say i'm squeaky-clean. put everyone off me, wouldn't it? like, working with him. >> yeah, you know, obviously -- he was something of a hero to me. when i read this script, it's got a very touching and really dysfunctional relationship at the heart of it. it's the relationship between my character and his father. and it was so exciting when ray agreed to do it. he read the script and agreed in under 24 hours. he was so excited about it. and i didn't really know what to expect. his performance is kind of characterized by menace, i would say. you know, he's an intimidating figure. >> chelsea: always. in every movie, yeah. >> in every movie. and i stepped on -- i did an instagram post about this. it's a story i do like telling. i stepped on set, and he was kind of in his own world. didn't really -- there wasn't really -- sort of engaged with his environment. sometimes actors can be -- we're a weird bunch. we do weird stuff. so i thought i'd leave him to it, give him his space. and from across the room he sort of caught my eye and just stood

up, walked towards me in a kind of frail way. he's in ailing health in the show. and he just embraced me. and we sort of stayed that way for a little while. it was kind of weird, but it was really nice as well. [ laughter ] and i said, i'm really glad we're doing this. and he said, me too. he didn't say anything to me for that first day, other than that, other than what we said to each other in character. and we had a few weeks of filming together. it was a really amazing experience for me. he just brought this presence, this reality. in contrast with, you know, the kind of toughness of him, he brought this incredible tenderness and love. and i'm really proud of the relationship we built. we had the premiere last night. his daughter and his fiancee were both there to honor him. we really have lost one of the greats. he's amazing in the show. and -- yeah, i loved, loved working with him. >> chelsea: did he give you any advice? any acting advice or anything like that? >> he didn't give me acting advice. he was always very complimentary. and we got very comfortable with each other very quickly. and i -- sat opposite him in one of the one of the prison visitation scenes. i was moaning about something i had to do as an actor, that's what we do, we moan. i was telling him about something i had to do promotionally or whatever. it wasn't a particularly nice thing. i was telling him about it, he's listening quietly, not really looking at me. i finished, he didn't really say anything. i thought, god, he doesn't agree with me, he's made a judgment about me because of that. he leant over and went, [ bleep ] you paying me. [ laughter ] >> every now and then, is this okay? is this good? do i suck at everything? they're like, no, you're okay, you're fine. >> chelsea: you were 12 years old when you wrote your first song. how does that go down? >> it was an accident. i forgot it was mother's day. i'm so close with my mom. and my dad but very separate. and i forgot it was mother's day. it was the night before. and i was like, i'll just write her a song, i know she'll cry, she's a sucker for songs. i wrote her a song called "oh mama." i couldn't play an instrument, i didn't know how to write a song. it was like a poem that i sang. it rhymes, kinda. she cried and i remember this feeling, oh, that came from a really pure place. the fact that she felt that -- i could have just sang "mary had a little lamb" and i'm sure she

would have loved that. you know, there was a moment where i was like, i want to write something that feels real to me, that connects with people, makes people have emotions. that exchange of energy. the same with comedy, right? you have something you want to say, and we say it differently, but it's the moment that you share it together where that barrier goes down that you feel a human connection. >> chelsea: yeah, it's like telling your story. when you're an artist, whether a musician, an actor, comedian, whatever, you want to tell your story. and it's how you tell your story. >> yeah. >> chelsea: that's beautiful, actually. i love that. yeah. your mom's lucky to get a song on mother's day. that reminds me to write my mother a song for mother's day.
