building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. a long smoldering fire flares up again in the east bay fire crews stopping the forward progress of the marsh fire. good morning everybody. it's saturday, july 10th. i'm liz scorers. thanks for joining us. excuse me, sunday, july 10th. i'm liz croates. we're gonna have more wildfire coverage in just a moment. but first, let's start with a quick look at the weather with meteorologists lisa argent. good morning lisa. hi, liz, good morning to we do have our fog and even some drizzle at the coast, but we are certainly turning up the heat today in the bay area, especially and there's the low cloud deck right along the coast, but we do have some fog from the san mateo coast elsewhere though. it is clear inland 57 in danville as well as dublin and pleasanton with 52 in novato

two-mile visibility at the coast and there's a look outside from our roof camera. cloudy through nine o'clock with fifties and 60s that drizzle at the coast then we're sunny the coast will be brighter, but it will be breezy mid-60s there and as we get into the afternoon and we're in the 80s on the peninsula bayshore mid to upper 90s inland, so it's warm day today the hottest day should be monday. i'll detail that outlook for you coming up liz. all right lisa. thanks in the east bay contra. costa fire has stopped forward progress of a large brush fire in the pittsburgh waterfront area. the smoldering fire was reported last month and flared up friday evening so far around 200 acres have burned fire crews were able to keep it from reaching a decommissioned power plant cal fire arrived on scene with aerial resources and water drops crews are on the scene right now to monitor multiple hot spots, but there are no reports of damages or injuries and a fire burning inside yosemite national park has now doubled in size the

so called washburn fire has scored generally 1200 acres so far. it's led to evacuations of the historic community of wawona and closed yosemite's mariposa grove. that's where hundreds of historic giant sequoias are and that's where a team of firefighters is standing by ready to defend the grove from the encroaching flames the southern entrance to the park is closed right now containment for this is at zero percent. meanwhile a powerful new tool that could one day save your life in the event of a wildfire is now online this map tracks active major wildfires burning across the country. and that includes the washburn fire burning in yosemite the platform is many months in the making by the western fire chiefs association. it uses real-time 911 calls and fire tracking data from the feds to map big fires users then of the ability to know how close the danger is even with spotty wi-fi or self-service. if you' fear at home, and you've got you know good access, that's great. but if you're in a rural area

and you don't then it's going to make a significant amount of difference and you know that data loading how much time it takes or whether you're actually getting loaded at all. chief zegaris says technology is improving annually to help firefighters and the public deal with more ferocious wildfires throughout the west. alright happening today lanes are closed on highway 101 and marin county for repairs. two lanes are shut down in the northbound direction from the robin williams tunnel to rodeo avenue at times the traffic has been heavy with the backup being around an hour for some people abc 7 news reporter kohler cornell bernard has that story. i literally just got off a plane just now and i was met by traffic juan spearman from la made the golden gate bridge his first stop in san francisco bad timing because this is what he found a major traffic headache car is slowly inching their way across the span you guys gonna try to drive across the bridge. no, no the traffic is backed up all the way.

so no, i'm not gonna do that. the delays are due to this caltrans repair project happening all weekend in sausalito. northbound lanes of highway 101 will be closed from the robin williams tunnel to the rodeo avenue off-ramp crews are repairing a drainage system before the rainy season begins. we're having wonderful weather in the bay area here in sausalito. and so it's important that we can be able to address the concerns that affect commuters caltrans says expect big backups through monday morning. they're saying about an hour delay to get northbound that certainly get a jam up san francisco city streets as well. here's time lapse video of our journey across the golden gate bridge into marin we found basic gridlock looks easy enough here, but in real time it took about 30 minutes, and we weren't alone. how long did it take you about the bridge about tubby minutes cab driver. halim mohammed got stuck at the bridges visitor center. he's warning his passengers about making the trip.

brave young boys okay abortion activists again took to the streets on saturday yesterday holding rallies all over the country. they were marches in los angeles chicago and perhaps the largest in washington dc some protesters traveled thousands of miles to take part in a sit-in outside the white house at last check 14 states have stopped nearly all abortions. pennsylvania could become the first state to it on the ballot. a bay area. obgyn is serving up an innovative solution for some women living in states banning abortion and his abc 7 news reporter tara campbell tells us it involves setting to the sea. this is going to be a very large monetary effort. that is funded by philanthropy and maybe a donated vessel dr. meg. autry's vision is of a vessel on the gulf of mexico. it's basically a reproductive floating health clinic the bay area obgyn has been pondering the idea of for the clinic for

years it would offer contraception point of care sti testing and treatment. being vaccination as well as surgical terminations. the plan is called prowess. for protecting restate statutes the urgency of it amplified in wake of the overturning of roe v wade, the reason for this particular innovation, is that if you look at the gulf, it is every state that borders. the gulf is restrictive women traveling. far out of state for services a floating clinic clos. i could be a game changer people that will be served by this are. individuals who don't have the money or the means or the time to go elsewhere and the plan. she says is ready to set sail we've done kind of all of the

entire journey tara campbell abc 7 news. 92 guns including a pair of ar-15 rifles and components for a third were turned in during a no-questions asked gun buyback event in fairfield this weekend there are these are some of the weapons that were handed over to police people who turned in the guns received gift cards 50 bucks for handguns a hundred for rifles. the event was organized by local faith groups, please the da's office and the matt garcia foundation as well. garcia was a fairfield city councilman and he was shot and killed in 2008 in his mistaken identity the convicted shooter is serving a life sentence. garcia was only 22 years old at the time. the foundation was established to honor his legacy and teach local youth about the value of leadership. bay area icon carlos santana as postponed several shows following his collapse on stage earlier this week the 74 year old was hospitalized tuesday after passing out during his show in michigan. santana said he forgot to eat and drink water. so he was dehydrated and

suffering from heat exhaustion doctors have recommended rest for a full recovery and six shows have been pushed back. oakland's rockin' stroll event was in full swing this weekend in the city's rockridge district bay area residents enjoyed a stroll filled with live music local vendors and activities for the whole family. the outdoor event was free for everyone of all ages and the stroll event takes place every second saturday of the month throughout the end of the year. you can expect to see live performances from musicians from a wide variety of genres including bluegrass to contemporary pop. and lisa, it was decent weather but the city it sure was typical san francisco summer. yeah. that's right. we're gonna even brighten it up here downtown with temperatures coming up through the 70s today. that doesn't mean we're gonna get rid of the breeze. we'll have that sea breeze, but right now you can see the low cloud deck here parts of marin once again a little bit of a hole there. yeah, right as you get to southern marin. otherwise, you can see a trough of low pressure has pushed up

into the pacific northwest. so that's allows a high pressure to build on in kind of nudging that out of the way and that initiates our warm-up 59 in hayward looking at upper 50s union city. berkeley is a 57 and as we look at the fog here about two mile visibility half pacifica down into half moon bay mountain pretty view here the sun coming up in another 40 to 45 minutes and we'll be looking at nice afternoon, but temperatures into the 90s in parts of the north bay. we will look for the warmest day to be on monday. there is still some drizzle at the coast. otherwise waking up to a partly cloudy skies, and that two-day warm-up today and tomorrow and the highest temperatures 90s even near 100 degrees out towards antioch into your monday. there's a look at the fog. you see that it's has that push into the delta but as we get into the sunny skies throughout the afternoon. it really doesn't go too far away. so that will allow for the sea breeze and then back into the

bay into early monday coming back once again to the coast, but i think even the coast is going to warm up a bit. into monday afternoon. here's a look at that fire in yosemite the washburn fire where the smoke forecast shows that we are looking at those hazy conditions into the southern sierra the northern sierra truckee reno, and this is right on through two o'clock today. so looking at that fire doubling in size just about and you can see the smoke drifting over into nevada carson city this takes us through the middle of the day on monday back home locally. the air quality is good. even with our warm-up so we get into monday upper 90s to near 100 there mid 90s in concord elsewhere. you can see that the 70s today near 80 though as we get into hayward even redwood city on the peninsula san mateo warming up. here's our cooldown tuesday wednesday, and as we look at the trend in napa warm day today around 90 low 80s should be the

average and then looking at those mid 80s into tomorrow, so maybe maybe even a few degrees cooler parts. north bay, but warming back up by the end of the week. so it looks like summer's not going to stay away for too long back with us today mid-70s downtown look at the peninsula, you know when you see 80s there that sea breeze not as strong 82 palo alto mid 80s there for redwood city and belmont. 80s down around cupertino and san jose in the north bay wine country heating up into the 90s there ukiah 100 degrees in inland mid-90s to the upper 90s. so a hot couple of days today tomorrow overnight lows though. we'll be back into the 50s. so the heat risk is elevated throughout the later afternoon, but we'll get into that cooling overnight and as we look at the accuweather seven-day forecast today featuring the 60s at the coast the breezy conditions, but 70s around san francisco mid-80s from the peninsula to the bayshore with upper 90s

right before six o'clock allowing for a pretty picture here. this is sutro where you can see the marine layer depth there once again, it will cooling at the coast, but we're going to crank up the temperatures today even in the city 55 downtown. it's 58 in oakland 60 in palo alto with 59 in san jose. mid-50s half moon bay. so mother nature's natural ac still with us today low 50s in santa rosa near 60 in concord 59 in napa, but it will be confined to the shoreline nine o'clock. we are sunny everywhere with low to mid 60s for inland east bay still 50s at the coast, but as we get into the late morning early afternoon. these and eighties arriving from the bay into our inland valleys by three o'clock. check it out midnupper 90s pretty warm there even santa rosa in the 90s today and that fog though not far off. it comes back into play overnight, but still we're talking a toasty start to the work week. i'll talk about that and the week ahead coming up liz. all right lisa. thank you after a two year

hiatus san jose's oban festival is back. this is a japanese buddhist festival that honors the dead end dates back decades. this weekend celebration takes on a new meaning after the assassination of former japanese prime minister shinzo abe abc 7 news reporter. tim johns was at the festival this weekend and brings us the story. centuries of culture and tradition were on display saturday at san jose's oban festival oban is the japanese buddhist tradition dedicated to remembering and honoring the dead. we don't do this a whole lot. so being able to do this once a year is really nice to come together with everyone and be able to celebrate ashley mcdonald is a fourth generation japanese-american she dances in the festival every year something that's become a family tradition. we danced and remembrance of o grdpa who athan just rememberinl loved ones lost. it's also a chance to reflect on

dayet adesse posbity ic mor pre m home tokyo roughly 200 miles away from where he was assassinated in nara us secretary of state anthony blinken will be in tokyo on monday to pay his respects. funerals are starting to be held for the people killed in highland park, illinois nearly a week ago. and friends are sharing memories and honoring the victim's lives. here's abc news reporter ellen lopez a devastated community now saying they're goodbyes to the seven victims of the shooting rampage at the july 4th parade in highland park, illinois on saturday. a memorial was held for 69 year old eduardo. wado who loved attending the parade each year with this family. he was just the perfect father. perfect grandfather. perfect great-grandfather on friday. friends and family gathered to remember nicolas toledo o dual citizen. he would travel from mexico to

spend summers with his family and steve strauss who had 88 years old was still working. but today i want to remember not the way my dad died. but rather how he lived. and i'm thrilled to say. that i have so many fond memories of my dad too many to list leo sometime spoke of her mother jackie sondheim. a three-year-old er school teacher, i'm overwhelmed with such profound sadness. that she won't be holding my hand during all the important things i have yet to complete some of those who survived the attack now faced with a difficult recovery, including eight-year-old cooper roberts paralyzed from the waist down but awake. for ventilator his mother also shot his twin brother wounded by shrapnel and two-year-old aidan mccarthy both his parents killed his family now consulting mental health professionals for advice on how to tell him his parents

were gone. the alleged shooter facing seven counts of first-degree murder authority say the suspect could face dozens of additional charges one for each bullet fired and one for each person injured is due back in court. i-28 elwin lopez abc news the us supreme court has made it easier for anyone in the country to carry concealed weapons, but a new bill in california. aims to change that abc set for news reporter stephanie sierra explains how the process could become more and costly for taxpayers. under state law it is a crime to carry a concealed firearm without a valid license, california is among a half dozen states that no longer require people to show good cause in order to qualify for a license to carry a concealed. often referred as a ccw compact is especially hitting the bay area as several counties that rarely issue. these licenses will legally have to as long as the applicant

meets criteria like good moral character via resident of the county and completes a course of training. we've been bombarded for years for being very conservative about our ccw program. i think now our hands are a little bit tied since the supreme court ruling demand for these licenses is spiking in alameda county lieutenant ray kelly expects. the number of ccw's to double over the next few months from 300 to 600 and maintaining the influx won't be cheap. it's gonna cost the taxpayers in the county more money a couple three four deputies if we have to bring in that's gonna cause probably a million dollars a year to do that a similar trend is expected in san francisco county. i can say i haven't issued. ccw since i've been the sheriff now for over two years san francisco sheriff paul miyamoto says since 2002 only 28 people applied for ccw less than half were issued a license, but now we've received over 50 calls regarding applications. for applic ations in more

concealed weapons will be circulating our communities. but a new bill movie trailer aims to restrict where these concealed firearms may be carried and among other. was required at least 16 hours of training which is doubled the current requirement. so we're creating concrete criteria of basically making sure that a weapon only goes into somebody who's a lawful person who's not going to do harm and go to a school and shoot up a school at state senator anthony portentino authored the bill. asked it would prohib. it could weapons from place government buildings businesses selling alcohol amusement parks and sports venues, so sign the governor's desk in august and i think else. i mean, i know he's been assign it the legislation requires a two-thirds vote and if passed wouldn't take effect until january in the meantime local counties sheriff's issuing. these licenses will be reevaluating their approval and denial policies to ensure. there's a balance between one's

constitutional rights and public safety. stephanie sierra abc 7 news a southern california law firm has found social services has failed all 13 of the turpin children in 2018 children ranging from ages 2 through 29 were found malnourished and chained to their beds by their parents. the children were not able to access the 1 million dollars donated to them under social services care and investigation found some of the younger children. we're living with people facing child abuse charges and some older children were facing housing issues and food insecurity. the investigation says the social system was understaffed and overwhelmed with cases. food is recalling a ford is recalling tens of thousands of suvs and telling owners. they need to park their cars outside because of a fire risk more than 100,000 hybrids are under the expanded recall. they include ford escapes mavericks and lincoln horsehairs with the model years 2020 through 2022. a powertrain problem puts those
