the suspect's apartment. we'll have the latest on the investigation just ahead. but we begin with the weather and the wildfire burning in yosemite national park. burning for more than two days charring close to 1,000 acres and now threatening those awesome giant sequoias. abc's will carr has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, wildfires intensifying across the western united states. in utah, the jacob city fire blowing up, burning more than 2,000 acres, threatening buildings with evacuation orders in effect for the area. in yosemite national park, fires blazing through mariposa grove, the largest sequoia grove in the region. >> heartbreaking. you feel afraid for the people in the town and then just heartbroken about the trees. >> reporter: hundreds of campers traveling for the summer. between 600 to 700 people staying nearby given evacuation orders.

some choosing to stay in the area hoping the flames will pass through. >> plan on staying here at the park for a few days. i guess we'll see. >> reporter: according to officials over 1,000 acres have burned already. firefighters arriving on the ground, cutting lines and planes dropping retardant to retain the flames. >> it looks pretty scary and we're going full force on our suppression tactics. >> reporter: the fire began thursday afternoon with park officials saying it was fueled by dead and downed trees. the historic park home to grand meadows, deep valleys and vast wilderness, all now threatened by this devastation. >> it's terrible. i mean, every fire is scary. our hearts to go out to folks who had to be evacuated. >> reporter: both the fires in utah and yosemite are at 0% containment. whit? >> will carr, thank you. now to the grief and shock

in japan after the assassination of former prime minister shinzo abe as he was giving a speech. abc's bob woodruff is in tokyo with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, whit. while this investigation into the assassination of shinzo abe is stepping up, his body is now inside his home in tokyo. his body and his widow were carried by motorcade almost 300 miles from the hospital in nara. it's very common to have this here in japan. in nara, mourners brought flowers to a makeshift memorial close to where the shooting took place. u.s. secretary of state blinken will head toward tokyo to pay respect to abe. as for the suspect arrested at the scene, the 41-year-old, police say he has confessed to the murder. inside his home they have found many homemade guns that they say are similar to this one found at the murder site.

middle east since taking office. it includes stops in israel and saudi arabia. the president speaking about the global supply chains. big picture, next week's trip is about resettling relationships and mending fences. the u.s. will look to reassure allies in the region. the timing of this stands out, gas prices around the world have hit new highs due in part to the war in ukraine, including spikes here at home. all eyes will be on president biden's visit to saudi arabia. senior officials telling abc he'll meet with the crown prince. the white house declined to directly tie the trip to oil and gas, but says it will be a part of their talk. what's also interesting is this because of biden's campaign pledge to treat saudi arabia as a pariah over its human rights abuses after u.s. intelligence determined the crown prince ordered the murder of "washington post" contributor jamal ka sshogi. biden well aware of his critics

wrote in a "washington post" op-ed, his views on human rights are clear and longstanding. biden continuing that fundamental freedoms are on the agenda when he travels abroad and it's his job to keep the country safe and secure. whit? >> alex, thank you. in washington this week the final scheduled hearings of the january 6th committee. for the first time the public expected to hear testimony from former president trump's white house counsel. abc's kenneth moton is on capitol hill with a look at what's ahead. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. we are down to the final two january 6th hearings and the video testimony of former trump white house counsel pat cipollone is expected to take center stage. the high-profile witness who spent eight hours testifying behind closed doors last week. one committee member said pat cipollone with then-president trump during the assault on the capitol, didn't contradict the testimony of other witnesses. don't know how many details he confirmed, if any, but we know cipollone's role on january 6th came to light when former white house aid cassidy hutchinson

week. what are the odds of any movement on abortion rights? >> reporter: well, eva, the odds are slim. that's not going to stop democrats from trying. they're going to operate under two channels. speaker pelosi said she's going to bring legislation to codify roe back on the floor of the house. about a year ago exactly, last year, the house passed legislation to try to codify roe. it failed unsurprisingly in the senate. nancy pelosi is going to bring a second piece of legislation that will ban states that have already ba them, jailing them or any punitive action against folks who want abortions and leave to travel. the situation in the senate is going to be a lot less clear, they already don't have republican votes on their side, and they already know that the white house is limited in their scope to push republicans from the bully pulpit. as we just heard, biden signed an executive order last week to

tavern in south africa's soweto township killed at least 15 people. police are investigating reports that a group of men entered the bar and opened fire. no known motive at this time. the mayor of uvalde, texas, is calling for the release of 77 minutes of the police body cam video showing the hallways elementary school shooting. the mayor says releasing the hallway video will show law enforcement's response to the shooting, believing it could provide clarity to the families of the victims. a massive fire ripped through the veranda house hotel in nantucket. the 338--year-old hotel engulfed in flames on saturday, suffering extensive damage. authorities say that an off-duty fire captain and bystanders spotted the fire and then rushed inside to help those inside escape the blaze. the veranda house hotel facebook page says that all guests and employees were safely evacuated. we start this half hour with

the legal battle between johnny depp and exwife amber heard taking a new turn. all over the identity of one of the jurors in their definition trial. will carr is back with the details. will, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, eva. this all started with an op-ed that amber heard wrote back in 2018. it has since taken a number of legal twists and turns. the latest may be the most bizarre and it has her team asking for a new trial. this morning, amber heard's legal team filing for a mistrial in the defamation case between heard and ex-husband johnny depp. >> have you found that mr. depp has proven all of the elements of defamation? answer, yes. >> reporter: heard's lawyers alleging that juror number 15 was illegally selected writing individual summoned for jury duty on april 11, 2022 and, therefore, is not part of the jury panel and could not properly serve for the jury in

this trial. a request for a new trial is based on juror 15 is 52 years old, born in 1970. while the person summoned with the same address and the same name was born in 1945 and 77 years old at the time of the trial. >> it's very tough decision for the court to make on this motion. it's hard to see how the fact that someone was 52 years old, rather than 70 years old, how that would make a change or a difference in the ultimate verdict. >> reporter: in june, 36-year-old heard was found guilty of three defamation claims after being sued by depp for $50 million. she was ordered to pay more than $10 million in damages. >> as against amber heard, we the jury award compensatory damages in the amount of $10 million. >> reporter: heard who countersued for $100 million was awarded $2 million. after a dramatic six-week court battle -- >> it's insane to hear heinous accusations of violence. >> this is the most painful and

♪ in today's "weekend download," summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors but we've got to be mindful of some of the little critters threatening to spoil our fun, specifically ticks. joining us is jim fredericks. he's the national pest association chief entomologist. welcome to you, dr. fredericks. what kind of ticks do we need to be concerned about? >> good morning. well, this is the time of year that we need to be aware of ticks and we're talking about deer ticks, lone star ticks, the american dog tick. there are a number of different ticks found in different regions of the country and not only are they creepy they can transmit

disease to humans. >> there are reports about the spread of a certain kind of tick that can cause you to have a meat allergy. tell us about that and what are some of the symptoms? >> the lone star tick has been implicated in a red meat allergy. so it's actually a syndrome where you develop an allergy to a particular sugar that's found in red meat, not found in fish or chicken. so the symptoms can range from shortness of breath, rash, to even more life-threatening-type symptoms. >> so what is the best way to prevent getting bitten in the first place and what should you do to check to make you haven't or your dog hasn't been bitten by a tick? >> that's a great question. this is really important. you need to take steps to protect yourself and your property. protect yourself by using

repellant. look for a repellant that has an epa registration number. that tells you it not only works, but it's safe for people and the environment. second, if you're out in tick-infested areas, places with high weeds in the wood, high grass, you'll want to make sure to do a tick check when you leave those areas. check yourself from head to toe for ticks. finally, when you get home, take a shower. it's a good idea. ticks will wash off, but it's a great opportunity to find those ticks that are hidden on your body. finally, protect your property by calling a pro. pest control pros can develop programs that can help protect your property from tick infestations. >> just real quick, if you're going to check your dog -- i'm asking because i have to look out for my nala. what should you do? >> dogs are part of the family, right, and so -- ticks are found around those areas where dogs can't scratch that well, maybe behind the head, look in the hair and look for a tick that's
