>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> a deadly assault downtown. police searching for the suspect who beat a man to death, possibly with a baseball bat. good evening and thank you for joining us. this is petaluma's first homicide of the year. cornell barnard has details. >> it is actually super heartbreaking because i do walk around these streets, especially at night. cornell: many were struck to hear about a horrible crime in downtown petaluma. police say early sunday morning, a man was found lying in the middle of keller street after being assaulted. he was later found dead at the scene. >> we got a call of a possible fight downtown. the person said that his friend had been struck by a baseball bat. cornell: police do not know what led up to the violent assault.

the suspect is still at large. >> no onewest seen running away on foot, so we think the suspect may have fled in a vehicle. we don't have a vehicle description at this time. cornell: the victim's fellow -- relatives learning the terrible news that the petaluma police station. quick sadness for my community that we deal with more and more of this kind of interpersonal violence. cornell: the crime is all more shocking considering the last homicide in petaluma was in summer of 2017. >> it is shocking. we live here almost five years and really a crime. one of the things we liked about the area. cornell: police believe the victim and his attacker may have come from a local bar or nightclub. >> the bars were all getting out. in the past, we usually have some type of disturbance. it is prop we somehow related to that. >> something like that could happen to anybody, and that makes me a little more uneasy about being down here.

cornell: police are looking for surveillance video from downtown businesses which could provide clues about the crime. dion: the victim's name has not yet been released. moving out to the california wildfire season taking aim at the yosemite valley. the washburn fire increased in size overnight. the intense fire zone -- the southern entrance on highway 41 is closed. nearly 1600 acres have burned. a 400-acre jump from last night. containment is still at 0%. fire officials say a fire was active overnight. mariposa grove and its hundreds of giant sequoias is closed. >> afraid for the people in the town, and then just heartbroken about the trees. >> looks pretty scary. we are going full force on our suppression tactics. >> all other areas of yosemite

are open, but visitors are warned to expect smoking conditions. and the marin county fire department is adding manpower as fire season heats up. annual funding will increase from $8 million to $13 million for the next fiscal year, and the money will allow the department to increase its cruise from four teams of 14 to 16 firefighters. and a reminder, you can see all wildfires in california using our online interactive wildfire tracker. a husband and wife are in critical condition tonight after being hit by a car in berkeley last night. police to the couple was crossing the street in the crosswalk at about 10:00 p.m. when the toyota corolla ran into them. a 76-year-old man and his 70 or-year-old wife suffered head injuries. the driver is described as a

78-year-old woman from emeryville. she stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. police say she did not show any signs of drug or alcohol impairment. having now, two lanes of highway 101 in sausalito are still close for emergency repairs. the northbound closure between robin williams tunnel and rodeo avenues expected to continue through 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. crews are repairing a drain age system there. traffic did back up a bit yesterday onto the golden gate bridge, but it appears things have been running mostly smoothly. twitter has hired a law firm to lead the company's battle with elon musk over the million-dollar sale that seems is not happening now. bloomberg news reports twitter has hired a firm that specializes in business mergers. all of it is in response to musk's sec filing friday to try to dump his 24 billy -- his $44 billion bid to take over twitter. musk claims the social media

giant is not giving enough information about the company. twitter's chairman responded by saying the company plans to seek legal action if the deal falls through. the january 6 committee will hold its final two scheduled hearings this week. the first will include video testimony from former president trump's white house counsel. alex presha has a preview. alex: for the first time, the public is expected to hear from former president trump's white house counsel pat cipollone. he spent eight hours last week speaking with lawmakers behind closed doors. he was with president trump during the assault on the capitol and was repeatedly mentioned during testimony last month by cassidy hutchinson, former aide to the president's chief of staff, mark meadows. >> mr. cipollone said something to the effect of, please make sure we don't go up to the capitol, cassidy. keep in touch with me. we will get charged with every crime imaginable if we make that happen.

alex: illinois congressman adam kinzinger, who sits on the committee, says to pallone's testimony did not contradict that of other witnesses. >> you will see over the next couple of hearings a little of what he said. certainly, you will see a lot of it in that report, but at no point was there a contradiction of what anybody said. alex: when asked about a report that president trump is considering waving his claim to executive privilege for steve bannon -- >> anybody that wants to talk to the committee, we welcome them to do so. we welcome them to do so under oath. alex: bannon's attorney says mr. brandon is willing to infer first to testify at the public committee. representative liz cheney said the hearings will give the public a chance to hear how the former president sent a violent

dion: scary moments on a spirit airlines flight from tampa to atlanta today. spirit says one of the brakes in the landing gear overheated, causing a fire. flames and black smoke can be seen in this video here. the plane was towed to the gate. no one was hurt. not to gas prices. the national average has gone down $.13 in the last week and $.30 in the last month. the national average for a gallon of regular is four dollars 68 in. san francisco's average prices are down $.22 in a week. a new season of abc summer game shows kicks off tonight.

dion: spencer, you are watching that heat. spencer: what a warm up. you can see how much warmer it is in each but. 12 degrees warmer in san francisco than at this time yesterday. 14 degrees warmer in hayward wood, 12 degrees warmer in santa rosa and we can expect a similar pattern tomorrow. we are going to expect a little bit of a cool down in san francisco and boards of the coastline even though we are to the peninsula a little bit, but inland areas will be slow to cool down. there's a finger of fog moving out over the golden gate right now thanks to that risk onshore flow. 75 degrees right now in san francisco and in oakland. almost 90, 91 at santa clara and 61 at half bay. here's another view of that fog spilling through the golden gate. on the temperature readings, 93 in santa rosa. 87 at napa. just a few minutes ago, it was 100 fairfield. now it is a cooler 99.

one more view of that fog, looking at traffic on the golden gate. these are our forecast features. we will see fog expanding again overnight as we did last night. hot and litigant tomorrow, and we can expect refreshingly cooler days ahead starting around the middle of the week. overnight, a similar pattern of what we had last week. low clouds and fog expanding and we will see patchy drizzle as well. overnight lows remain in the upper 50's to 60's, really mild, almost uncomfortably. for 60's at the coast, mid-80's around the bay and upper 90's and lynn. here's the seven-day forecast. you can see we will have another hot day tomorrow. low 80's around the bay shoreline, but a sharp cooldown is coming our way tuesday and wednesday and as we go into the latter part of the week, minor warming will begin thursday. slightly cooler, little change on friday. already and saturday, we can expect high temperatures around 90 degrees inland and mid around bay shoreline and low to mid 60's on the coast, and it looks

chris: final round at the american century celebrity championship up in lake tahoe, you could not have asked for better weather or better golf. fans got their moneys's worth this weekend. even the experts fall off sometimes. stephen curry, not the best day on the course, but he did bury this long birdie on 16 and finished second in the family challenge to his dad. have not found the evidence that he jumped in the lake yet, but we will keep looking. cornerback aaron rodgers, four birdies and this eagle on 18. he ultimately would finish ninth overall. this went to a three-man player. meantime, champion and former ace picture into the water on the second ball. he played so well, but a little too late. a former shark missing the eagle, birdie on the second. that would have forced a third hole instead. tony romo, former cowboys

"thor: 11 thunder" is a hit at the box office this weekend. the latest film in the marvel cinematic universe made more than 100 million dollars and counting here in the u.s. it has already made more than $300 million worldwide so far for disney, the parent company of marvel and abc 7. a large stretch of valencia street in san francisco's mission district was closed to car so people could enjoy the city streets. a monthly event allows neighbors and residents alike to walk or bike or even scoot down car-free streets. activities today as you just saw included hula hooping -- you see that, spencer? tight rope walking, and plate spinning, among other things. that's all the time we have for this edition of abc 7 news at 5:00. for spencer and kris and all of us here, thanks so much for joining us.

we will see you in just about 30 minutes for abc 7 news at 6:00. as we come on the air tonight, the intense battle to save the giant redwoods. a wildfire now threatens one of america's natural wonders. hundreds of firefighters are on the scene using planes to fight the flames. one aircraft narrowly missing flying debris. crews setting up sprinklers as the fire burns out of control. some of those sequoias thousands of years old. hundreds of people evacuated during one of the busiest times for the park. will carr is standing by. those flames fueled by the relentless drought with no end in sight for much of the west. scorching summer heat is spreading across the country, temperatures feel like the triple digits, breaking records in texas. and we're tracking severe storms that threaten millions and are moving east. rob marciano is timing it all out.
