good evening. thank you for joining us. tonight the community in uvalde, texas demanding answers nearly two months after the mass shooting that took the lives of 19 children and two teachers. the anger over law enforcement's response growing, along with frustration over the slow drip release of information. here's abc's john quinones. >> reporter: they gathered in the brutal sun. >> this march will start at 5:30 exactly. this is a peaceful event, a peaceful march. >> reporter: in temperatures that peaked at more than 100 degrees. >> no justice! >> no peace! >> reporter: fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers. even grandparents. >> this is my granddaughter. >> layla salazar. >> layla salazar. this is her picture right here. >> reporter: the anger over law enforcement's response on the day of the yufuvalde, texas shooting palpable. >> i'm sorry, i don't have any

respect for the uvalde police department right now at all. >> reporter: people who lost family and a peace of their hearts when a mad young man stormed into robb elementary. >> not one more child! >> reporter: they march through the streets of uvalde pleading -- >> not one more child! >> reporter: demanding that their voices be heard. >> no justice! >> no peace! >> reporter: among those killed, tess marie mata, who was in the fourth grade. her parents, jerry and veronica. >> we never thought we'd go through this, and we're living through it now. and for anybody that's out there you need to make sure that this is stopping. >> it needs to stop. >> it has to stop. it has to stop. how many more kids have to die before they -- these people understand? >> reporter: across the country protests against gun violence have reached a fever pitch. this morning president biden marking the passage of the safer

communities gun safety act, the first significant gun reform in decades. >> the action we take today is a step designed to make our nation the kind of nation we should be. >> reporter: his speech interrupted by manuel oliver, a parent who lost his son in the 2018 parkland mass shooting. >> i've been trying to tell you this for years. >> let me finish my comment. let him talk. let him talk. >> not one more child! >> reporter: the same frustration that more needs to be done, overflowing in uvalde. >> no peace! >> reporter: seven weeks after the may 24th massacre they're still in the dark. with no idea why their loved ones, 19 children and two teachers, were brutally murdered. no idea why it took at least eight police agencies 77 minutes to confront and take down the shooter. 77 precious minutes that might well have saved lives.

>> it cost the lives of my babies and their classmates. it's unforgivable. >> 77 minutes. >> that's too damn long. >> reporter: javier cazares was the organizer of the protests. her daughter jacklyn one of the victims. >> why is it called the unheard voices? >> our babies can't spaem speak for themselves, so we've got to do it. >> reporter: norma is a school principal. she said this mass shooting should hit home no matter where you live. >> why are you here? >> because that's us. these kids look like the kids in my school. i look like that teacher. there's got to be gun control. there's blood in their hands, and we're going to do nothing? nothing? they're not coming back next year to school. they're not going to be here.

>> reporter: after the march in the town square the demand for those answers grows even louder and more touching. >> what i want no one can give me. i want my daughter back. if i can't have her, then those who failed her will never know peace. >> all this pain and grief we feel sadly could have been prevented. but a war weapon is more important to our current governor than the lives of his people. >> reporter: the protest comes on the heels of a report that said one police officer had the suspect in his crosshairs but that he hesitated, asking his supervisor for permission to shoot. according to the report, the supervisor either didn't hear the request or responded too late. and that by the time the officer turned back around the suspect was inside the classrooms. the report stating the upd officer would have heard gunshots and/or reports of gunshots and observed an individual approaching the

school building armed with a rifle. a reasonable officer would conclude in this case based on the totality of the circumstances that use of deadly force was warranted. but now uvalde's mayor tells me that report isn't true. although he hasn't provided proof to back up his claim. >> that's totally false. if that officer would have taken that shot, it would have been a p.e. teacher that would have been hit. >> reporter: and that's been much of the problem in uvalde, where even the investigation feels deeply divided. so many conflicting contradictory reports that have leaked out while various probes are under way. you have said that you're concerned there might be a cover-up. >> there are over eight agencies in that hallway. federal agencies, state agencies, local agencies. everybody in that hallway has got to be accountable for what went down. >> reporter: over the weekend there was a bit of a break from all the anger and the heartache. the houston astros baseball foundation came to uvalde to

lend their support and bring just a little joy to this community. baseball is big in this little town. >> we got this. we can do this. okay? here we go. >> reporter: the little league in uvalde lost six of its players in the massacre. the softball team, despite playing their hearts out, in the end was eliminated or the ys ttoe't rea maersha these out bar yling about -- >> i was just telling, i mean, i think that's so awesome to hear. >> reporter: kids playing. >> it's so awesome to hear for our kids and to be out here really enjoying this time. and i know that they're hurting, we're all hurting. our whole community's hurting. and just this by the astros foundation and giving our kids an opportunity to just come out here and smile and just be able

to be in their zone out here and taking a break. a little break. >> reporter: the softball players, just 12 to 14 years old, wear ribbons with the naes of the victims including ileana torres, who last played against j.j.'s daughter. >> ileana actually got on base and ended up scoring a run against our team and slid at home and was just so happy that she scored. >> reporter: today state and local officials announced they've agreed to release security footage that will show officers waiting those 77 minutes in the hallway at robb elementary. the video would not contain graphic images or depictions of violence. but there's not even unity over that decision. the local district attorney in uvalde, christina mitchell busbee saying she will refuse to release any surveillance videos out of concern for the integrity of the investiation. layla salazar's grandfather says the families deserve to see that video. >> i think we should because

jen shah, the outlandish star of "the real housewives of salt lake city," could be facing a grim new reality. prison. up to 14 years. that's after she pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges today, admitting that she took part in the telemarketing scheme that scammed hundreds of people, many of them elderly. here's abc's zohreen shah. >> i am innocent, and i did not do any of the things that have been alleged against me. >> reporter: real housewife jen shah is in for a whole new reality. after spending more than a year

proclaiming her innocence on tv for the world to see, today that all changed. >> the real housewives of salt lake city cast member accepted a plea deal with federal prosecutors. >> excuse me. >> reporter: the reality tv star leaving a new york courthouse this morning, captured by thedailymail.com, hiding her face under a mask and sunglasses after suddenly pleading guilty to federal fraud charges and agreeing to pay back up to $15 million and faces up to 14 years in prison. >> the judge asked her are you here today to plead guilty and she said yes. >> to hear today that she's completely flipped the script and has now pled guilty is the shocker of all shockers. >> reporter: at the beginning of 2021 jen shah's star appeared to be on the rise as a breakout star of bravo's newest addition to the "real housewives" franchise, salt lake city. >> i wanted to be shah-amazing. i wanted to be shah-bulous.

>> reporter: the married mother of two was known for her flashy style and flaunting her life of luxury. >> the first season i spent every single episode trying to figure out where jen shah's wealth came from. and i came up with absolutely nothing. for the second season i learned that i was not alone in trying to figure that out. all of her friends, all of her associates on that show also had no idea where that extravagant wealth came from. >> reporter: that question came into sharp focus in march. when a bombshell dropped right in the middle of filming for season 2 of the show. >> there's police and they have handcuffs out. >> homeland security. >> reporter: shah was arrested off camera and charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, all linked to a nationwide telemarketing scheme that targeted hundreds of people across the country, many of them over age 55. the charges set off a massive

media blitz. shah is not the first housewife to face a hard time after being indicted on federal charges. teresa giudice from the new jersey franchise famously served 11 months in prison. shah did become the subject of a hulu documentary from abc news studios, "the housewife and the shah shocker" which included interviews with investigators. >> in any of our operations we don't look for specific timing to do arrests. in the case of jen shah she had a television crew that was following her on a regular basis, right? so it was not planned in any way. >> what are you guys doing in there? >> there's a search warrant. >> reporter: our investigators, our special agents needed to do our jobs, and i'm happy to say they did it without incident and she was taken into custody. >> reporter: the charges stemmed from an investigation that had been ongoing for years. investigators in new york say they had uncovered a huge telemarketing scheme. by 2021 it linked all the way to jen shah in utah.

>> and jen shah was charged with helping to orchestrate this scheme where ordinary people, vulnerable people, often elderly people would be tricked into giving up their life savings for products that telemarketers were telling them had value but which jen shah now admitted really had none. >> reporter: initially shah pleaded not guilty. >> the case against her was strong, prosecutors said. they had bank statements and they had cooperating witnesses including jen shah's own personal assistant, stuart smith. >> the only thing i'm guilty of is being shah-amazing. >> reporter: despite the charges shah continued filming for the show even as she prepared her legal defense. >> so we're really just at the very beginning of the case. you've been charged with wire fraud, and then money laundering. you pled not guilty to both charges. >> right. >> and we've in fact set it for trial. >> reporter: on the show she would often proclaim innocence

of the charmges against her to her castmates and her family. >> i'm telling you, i knew nothing of this. i had -- i didn't do anything. >> what i have been accused of is absolutely the complete opposite of anything i would ever do in my life. >> reporter: those proclamations continued after the show finished filming. at the reunion shah again defended herself against the idea of a plea deal. >> the success rate of the new york state attorney is like 95%. does that -- >> because people take plea deals. i'm fighting this. i'm innocent. >> she's fighting it. >> and i will fight for every person out there that can't fight for themselves because they don't have the resources or the means. so they don't fight. >> reporter: and even as recently as last month during an exclusive interview with "up and at 'em" on youtube. >> to me this is like the only option for me, is to fight, is to show everybody out there that

we're so quick to jump on the bandwagon and make assumptions. >> reporter: with her trial set to begin in a week, this morning's guilty plea on one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud a shocking twist. >> excuse me, guys. pardon me. >> reporter: the reality tv star seen leaving the courtroom in these photos from dailymail.com looking somber in sunglasses. >> what seems to have happened is just that her legal team, they probably said the best case scenario is for you to plead guilty because we don't see this going to trial and you coming out of this the way you perhaps thought you were going to come out of this. >> reporter: in court today shah read from a prepared statement saying "in 2012 to march 2021 in the sourp district of new york and elsewhere i agreed with others to commit wire fraud. i knew this was wrong. i knew many people were harmed. and i'm so sorry." >> any of the bombast that you see from jen shah on reality television, none of that was evident in court, where she

semed more contrite. >> reporter: shah's attorney put out a statement about today's plea deal reading, "ms. shah is a good woman who crossed a line. she accepts full responsibility for her actions and deeply apologizes to all who have been harmed. jen pled guilty because she wants to pay her debt to society and put this ordeal behind her and her family." a source close to the real housewives of salt lake city production confirms the show is currently filming season 3 and jen shah will be a full-time cast member. bravo did not comment on today's developments. >> i think that season 3 of salt lake city housewives is probably going to end up being one of their most watched seasons, one of their most watched franchises of all time because everyone wants to know what led up to her changing that plea deal. >> only jen shah knows for sure why she's had this change of heart, why she maintained her innocence for so long only to plead guilty at the dawn of her trial. but her lawyer says that she has
