welcome back to "gma." we want to get to our cover story, guns in america in the wake that have fourth of july shooting that left seven people dead. a group of highland park parents are turning their anger into action organizing a march on washington to call for gun control. joining us is natalie lorentz, a survivor of the highland park shooting along with senator tammy duckworth from illinois. welcome to you both. natalie, let me begin with you. you were with your whole family at the july 4th parade. your husband, mom, three boys, very young boys right now. tell us about that experience and how your family is doing now. >> oh, it's hard to even answer. you know, my boys are doing okay. they're young and not fully aware of really everything that took place that day. i'm, you know, more worried about a month from now, three months from now, what implications that holds for them. as far as my mom, my husband and

many demand for rental properties is through the roof. but experts say there are ways to negotiate. this morning, as interest rates rise, rent prices are soaring too. relief in short supply for those trying to find a place to call home. siobhan kelly saw her rent go up four types since 2018. >> it's really hard to survive. it's not like i sit at home all day. i get out and go to work. i'm just not able to keep up with the economy. >> reporter: experts say that as the federal reserve works to tmp down inflation, slowing the economy by boosting interest rates, home mortgages are becoming more expensive and unattainable for many. flooding the rental market with higher demand and pushing prices way up in the process. >> i could take a paycheck and pay my rent and have a couple of hundred dollars over it to pay another bill. well, now, i get my paycheck and it goes to rent. >> reporter: some renters reporting an increase of nearly a thousand dollars per month. so what can you do?

>> you want to rent from direct owners, condo owners, rather than large rental buildings if you're looking to get the best deal. because those single owners want to have somebody that is easy, that's going to pay their rent on time and not always looking for top dollar. so finding a private owner may be your best bet to negotiate a rent. >> reporter: and experts say have all your applications and financial documents organized and ready to go before negotiating. look for a place you're willing to put some work into, offer to paint or handle the yard. you could get a better deal. you can also opt into a longer lease. landlords are often willing to lower prices for renters who commit to staying. and experts say it's important to keep your credit score up. you can also submit a letter of recommendation from your previous landlord or a trusted contact to show that you will be a good tenant. >> what if you're in a rental and the landlord wants to raise rent? >> a lot are going through this. people in my only family included. you can try to pay as many
