reporter about how she plans to clean up san francisco. >> there is no question that she has big problems to tackle as our new district attorney, problems that affect all of us, problems she vows to fix by restoring accountability. the big question is how will she do it and how fast? >> within nine months you have gone from working for the da to now assuming the job. at any point in your recall did you think becoming the next day was a possibility? >> no. i started in the das office in 2014 as a volunteer attorney. in an unpaid position. at no point could i have imagined i would be sitting here talking to you as saints cisco district attorney. >> one of the reasons he was recalled was because of his bad relationship with the san francisco police department. there is renewed hope that that will change.

>> we want to work collaboratively in order to achieve our unified mission. >> one of the reasons you were appointed was because of your promise to hold criminals accountable. to rest all law and order in san francisco. >> you have to take it one issue at a time. we have to start addressing repeat and violent offenders. so we are addressing those who continually commit crime in san francisco. making sure that they are held accountable. people think there are no consequences for their actions. we are still working on that. as i talk to my management team,

we are coming up with the new policies. i don't like to throw the baby out with the bathwater. they may need to be refined. >> what will you do to crackdown on property crime? >> we can no longer turn a blind eye to the way that property crime affects our quality of life. >> how you take it more seriously? >> we will not be trying to find the easiest way to get cases off of our desks. >> in areas like union square there has been smash and grab robberies. some people are worried about privacy. some people are worried about safety.

>> we want to make sure that we have the possibility of bringing perpetrators to justice. jurors want video evidence. >>'s talk about your staff. what happens from your perspective? >> any change in administration's new and uncomfortable for people. that is understandable. as i said to them and as the article pointed out, i came into the room to extend my hand and say i know longer want us to be an office that is divided by who hired you. >> she often criticized his charging rate, which was higher than his credit -- predecessor. it's she is reelected in november, she bows to publish that information.

barrier for the first time in 40 years, consumers are likely to tighten their spending even more. but here it is not all bad news. >> you are seeing prices in july begin to moderate, particularly at gas stations. >> prices in the bay area tend to be higher across the area. any sort of inflation effect may be felt more here. >> what we have had in the region previously is fewer people in the middle. inflation can drive a bigger wedge between those groups. >> one bay area benefit is spread prices have not fully rebounded to pre-pandemic levels >> we have seen a drop in population. >> cities like san francisco and oakland are still enjoying lower rents. san jose has started to rebound a bit.

he advises clients on total compensation. >> we have seen some increases in compensation to mitigate the impact of inflation. but not to the extent that it matches. >> he says many bay area employers continue to be flexible about working from home. he says benefits for working in office might include lunches and happy hours. some companies are offering retention bonuses. >> salesforce is once again unloading office space in downtown san francisco. the software company has listed the percent of its 43 story building for lease. that is across the street from

another tower. it is the third time they have cut off his face in the city during the pandemic. they want to make the most efficient use of the real estate footprint. >> monkeypox vaccines are in high demand is more cases of the disease are being reported. a long line of people waited outside to get a vaccine. we were told dozens of people were in line hours before the first shot was given. san francisco is running out of doses as the city waits for federal supplies. the department of health says some supplies will run out five today. the department is confirming 68 cases of monkeypox in san francisco. we are taking a closer look at supply issues involving the vaccine in the bay area.

>>'s take a look at some breaking news. you know what this is. this is a fire. it is birding -- burning on lake hermann road. this is close to lake hermann. we are monitoring it. you can see a lot of smoke. you can see some buildings off to the right as well. we will keep an eye on this. our commitment to building a better bay area focus is now on education. our senior education reporter sat down with the new superintendent of san francisco public schools. he takes over at a time when the district is facing budget challenges and declining enrollment. we will learn about his goals and how he intends to move away? >> started as superintendent on july 5, so only a few days ago. he says he is here to listen and to learn.

but he also knows that rebounding from the effects of a pandemic like covid will take some time. he is steadily moving into his new position as head of san francisco unified school district. the school board said he would lead a district three times the size of haywood, where he previously served as superintendent. he talked about the first order of business. >> continuing to work on our payroll system is a priority. >> for payroll glitch resulted in many teachers and staff not getting adequately aid. they are still working on it. another pressing issue is how to recover from a remarkable client in enrollment. >> during covid, families left the district because the kids and teachers were left out of a school for too long. how are you going to get those families back? >> it is more if you build it,

they will come. and people see that we are taking care of students. they are achieving at high levels. we have programs and opportunities that you could not get anywhere else in the area. families will want to be in san francisco unified. >> he admits with only a week on the job, he has yet reach out to more people in the community for input. >> everybody is invested in helping same schools improve. share your ideas. >> balancing the budget is another goal that could bring readjustment and cuts in different areas. >> what do we value? what do we need to pull back on? >> then there is a high school which will have a merit-based omissions policy. allegations of racism have divided the city. how do you change the culture there? >> we need to listen to the students.

>> another pending project is this school of the arts. it has yet to materialize. >> when you want to be known as the superintendent who moved to the school to the center of the arts community in san francisco? >> all of our schools are opportunities. they can develop critical thinking skills. >> with regard to that school, he's -- he asked to see the master plan. it has yet to be completed. san francisco is working on it.

that is why they were able to start the construction on their performing arts center. he is listening and learning. >> thank you very much. a renewed effort is underway to form a new school district in contra costa county. today, residents of northgate asked the board of education to allow them to help break away. it is an appeal of a 2017 decision. they rejected an effort, saying it would create income disparities in the district. >> governor newsom is in washington. she met with -- she met with jill biden and is expected to meet with the vice president. in his remarks, he heavily criticized republican efforts to reshape school curriculum. he says under tatian is --
