>> reporter: this morning new numbs rising faster than at any point in four decades. the consumer price index up more than 9% compared to last year. gas prices up nearly 60%. nationwide a gallon of gas costing on average nearly $1.50 more than this time last year. food prices up nearly 10.5% compared to last year. flour, dairy products and fruits and vegetables facing some of the steepest price hikes. >> i feel the inflagts pain every day. >> reporter: the of the could of meat, chicken and he goes slightly falling from may. americans still feeling the pinch. >> the typical american family. they're having to spend almost $500 more a month to buy the same goods and services they bought a year ago. so a lot of financial pain. >> reporter: in a statement, president biden calling inflation, quote, unacceptably

high. but arguing the latest numbers would show a snap shot of inflation in june are out of date and don't reflect days of declining gas prices. >> there is no question that we still have work tad. >> reporter: but the red hot inflation report also likely to prop the federal reserve to respond and raise interest rates even more aggressively. costing americans more on their credit card bills, and mortgages. the president of the atlanta fed signaling a significant potential rate hike, as high as a full percentage point could be coming, telling reporters, everything is in play. >> the new consumer price index shows rents increasing by 5.8% on average compared to last year. that's the sharpest uptick since 1981, leaving more americans with less money to spend on the other goods they need which are seeing their own spike in prices. >> thank you. we're learning more this morning about the potential witness in the january 6th investigation who president trump allegedly tried to

contact. sources say the former president tried to call a member of the white house support staff after a recent hearing of the january 6th committee. they say that individual is not someone trump would usually call. the witness did not pick up the call but the allegation has raised concern about potential witness intimidation. the committee has referred the matter to the justice department. now to the extreme weather from coast to coast. north to south. dozens of people unaccounted for after a major flash flood and record heat. forcing people to conserve electricity. this morning a taste emergency in southwest virginia where more than 100 homes are damaged after flash floods swept through the region. >> mud slides, trees, roads, houses in the road. it's just a mess. >> reporter: six inches of rain faug in buchanan county in a matter of hours. this image shows the foundation where a home once stood. the house swept away 300 yards down the street. official saying 44 people were

just switched over. >> it was so serendipitous that it happened while i was talking going the very thing i was warning our viewers about. >> reporter: the heat only adding to the concern about the extreme drought in the west. the great salt lake is now one-third its usual size and still shrinking which could expose high levels of arsenic in the lake bed. >> can they save salt lake? >> they will have to. because otherwise, it will be a huge ecological disaster. >> reporter: experts say the lake has high levels of arsenic in its soil because of the salt and other minerals in the water. a controversial child rape case may lead to more charges but not against the attacker. the ohio rape case sparked a political firestorm after the overturning of roe v. wade because the 10-year-old victim traveled to indiana for an abortion. the laws in that state are less stringent. indiana requires doctors to report abortions and rape allegations. indiana's attorney general says the doctor who performed the

abortion is now under investigation. >> we're gathering the information, the evidence as we speak. and we're going to fight this to the end. including looking at our licensure. if she failed to report in indiana, it is a crime to intentionally not report. >> investigators say a 27-year-old man in ohio who they say is an undocumented immigrant confessed to raping the 10-year-old. >> a former computer engineer at the cia has been convicted for the biggest theft of classified information in the agency's history. joshua was accused of leaking cyber espionage tools and exposing craft hacking materials. the material ended up being published by wikileaks. he is also facing child porn charges. the u.s. military has released video of the latestheimer sonic missile test. it is the second test this week described as a success. still experts say the hyper sonic program lags far behind china's.
