running dry. the urgent need for more across the bay area as there are now more than 1000 confirmed cases in the country. >> flames on the freeway. a bus catching fire. now the search is on for the driver. reggie: the effort to protect the community after an underground bunker was found with stolen items. >> come on, everyone. reggie: we are going to start with meteorologist drew tuma in. drew: right now with that warming trend beginning today one of the ingredients is a weaker marine layer. live doppler seven, you can see just along the coast across the city and patchy fog around the bay shoreline. that is it in terms of our fog this morning. we are generally in their 50's and 60's. 61 in san jose. 58 in napa.

let's take a live look outside from the exploratorium camera. we have cloudy conditions along the coast and across the city. we are starting off with gray skies this morning. we will find a quicker return to sunshine compared to yesterday. by noon it is a mostly sunny day. temperatures accelerating near 80, then later today it is a warmer today. it is also breezy. 90's making a comeback. we will take a closer look at this warming trend next couple of days. jobina: we start this morning with a desperate need for more monkeypox vaccines anywhere in the bay area. if you are lucky enough to get one in most situations the wait times are stunning. we talked to someone yesterday who waited 9.5 hours in berkeley get a shot. ryan curry is live in san francisco with the latest. ryan: just astonishing wait times for these people trying their best to get doses of this

vaccine right now. it is just hard to come by. there are not many places offering vaccine doses, and if you find one your odds of waiting in a long line are high. that is the case across the bay area. supply is very low, but demand is so incredibly high. that is the case for almost any city here in the bay area, trying to combat this high demand right now. abc 7 spoke with people in berkeley yesterday trying to get a vaccine, and one person -- you mentioned it -- waiting in line for nine hours. the catch at that berkeley site, people who paid memberships got priority. it is a strange situation. we are talking about a vaccine in very short supply. here at sf general they claim to only have about 50 doses left. they are trying to get more supply from the federal government. it is a tough time to find one right now, which is why those in berkeley say they are confused about what was going on yesterday.

>> if you pay to get in, there was assurances that he would get -- you would get a shot. >> there were employees walking around and telling folks waiting in line that if they paid us get in as a guest they would be in a shorter line and be allowed to wait inside. ryan: just a very strange situation. we did reach out to steam works in berkeley. we have yet to hear back. the city of berkeley says they do not want this mistake to happen again. as for here in san francisco, we mentioned sf general and their short supply. strut sf says they are taking appointments, but if you check online the only thing you are going to find is a wait list. again, a massive issue with this is supply and demand issue with this vaccine right now. there is just not that many

vaccines available, and there is a lot of people wanting to get vaccines. it is going to be an ongoing issue. ryan curry, abc7news. reggie: rafael mandelman says there will be a monkeypox briefing today aimed at lgbtq plus influencers. the white house is teaming up with glaad. they hope the influencers will share information with their social media followers. the briefing will cover who can get the vaccine and why the lgbtq plus community seems to be hit hard. and him and says he hopes to take part. we are taking a closer look at supply issues involving the monkeypox vaccine in the bay area. you can find those stories on our website. jobina: the fda has authorized a fourth covid-19 vaccine for people 18 and older. trials found the novavax vaccine was 90% effective at preventing mild, moderate, or severe covid-19. the biden administration has secured three point 2 million

doses, but the cdc has to sign off on it before it will be available. they meet next week. this could be significant, because it is a more significant -- a more traditional protein-based vaccine, instead of using mrna technology. it can be stored in regular refrigerators. and novavax says the vaccine shows broad immune response against variance -- variants. reggie: chp is looking for the driver of a bus that caught fire. video shows the bus on fire on highway 101. no passengers were on board, but investigators are trying to find the driver of the bus, who left the scene. no word yet on what started the fire. jobina: part of building a bay area is finding solutions. in the south bay that is the effort following the discovery of an underground bunker filled with stolen items. san jose police, city leaders,

and school officials spoke with amanda del castillo you. amanda: they recently outfitted with new cameras, locks, fencing, and other security measures to strengthen the campus parameter. district officials say they are familiar with challenges that come with being located near a large homeless encampment. >> we see the traffic in and out of the creek, but this is beyond that. amanda: the superintendent referencing this sophisticated bunker uncovered along nearby coyote creek. inside, 100 thousand dollars worth of stolen items, including power tools, equipment, and firearms. six people were arrested, facing felony possession of stolen property and weapons charges. >> regardless of being housed, we are going to treat as seriously as possible. amanda: it is that level of

criminal activity most alarming to superintendent cruz. he says safety measures must extend beyond school grounds. >> now we have to work on the city and county in terms of how does that translate? in terms of safety to and from home. amanda: assistant police chief paul joseph has established foot patrols have provided a level of security. >> i think the success of the bike patrol program has been the absence of any sort of assaults or incidents on the trail. amanda: but the bunker was built off of the trail. or motivation for councilmember esparza's push to clear encampments, especially near schools. she has come to council meetings with examples, focused specifically on the elementary school. >> i had to resort to making a powerpoint to show pictures of what children needed to walk through every single day. amanda: on wednesday she waited on the discovery of the elaborate bunker bordering campus.

>> have realities here in district seven that folks do not necessarily have in other parts of the city, just why it is important for people to share their stories, so that everyone can understand what is going on. amanda: i'm amanda del castillo, abc7news. reggie: authorities are watching a grass fire. the 115 acre fire near lake harmon is now 80% contained. pres -- crews are working to strengthen containment lines and put out hotspots. officials closed like harmon road near channel road. no homes are threatened and there are no effectuation orders. jobina: a supermoon is lighting up the bay area sky. it is gorgeous. appearing bigger and brighter than normal. the phenomenon happens when the moon's orbit is closer than usual. this is the period of the year in which male dear grow new antlers.

the buck moon is the one that will come closest to earth this year. drew: i get so jealous you get to see the moon coming in. jobina: it had a fog rolling past it. drew: i love that. i could not see it from the city. taking a look at the south bay, we are fog-free from this vantage point. today sunshine is a lot faster to return to our sky compared to yesterday. yesterday that morning fog was slow to clear. air quality, we are good to go. even in the upcoming weekend we have no issues. breathe easy. we warm faster this morning compared to yesterday morning. 70's and 80's by lunchtime. pretty comfortable around the bay shoreline. it around today our hottest spots will see the return of 90 degree readings along the shoreline. so, 68 in the city today. we will have the sunshine in san francisco. they were comfortable in the east bay. warming up in the north bay.

reggie: two separate shark attacks have been reported on long island beaches in the same day. here is a stephanie ramos. >> in this morning's gma first look, shark attacks increasing along the east coast. >> shark nice -- shark bite at the pavilion. >> with summer in full force, millions of people are flocking to the beach as some shark ski closer to shore. >> i think it is crazy how it is a second time happening and how dangerous it is to people. stephanie: off the new england coast, four great white sharks were spotted over three days. this morning, officials acknowledging that shark attacks may be part of a new normal. >> sharks are, these tiger sharks are closer to shore than they have been. stephanie: coming up, ginger zee explain why warmer water could play a role in these shark sightings.

with your gma first look, i'm stephanie ramos. reggie: back in california, the man who survived a shark attack off the coast of monterey three weeks ago is out of the hospital. >> i was about 150 yards from the beach when, just, wham! reggie: this is steve bremmer. he was attacked near pacific grove. the surgeon who operated on him said this shark night came millimeters within severing a major artery. he did not suffer any broken bones or major organ damage. >> grabbed me and pulled me up, then dove me down in the water. then, of course, it's been now. i am not a seal. we are not their food. it's pick me up. it was looking at me. i thought it could bite me again, so i pushed it with my hand and kicked at it with my foot, and it left. reggie: other swimmers pulled

him out of the water and administered first aid until paramedics arrived. he is expected to make a full recovery. jobina: that is amazing. abortion pills will soon be easily available for many college students in california. the university of california and cal state are on track to make the pills accessible on all campuses by january. that is the deadline set by a state law passed in 2019. researchers say upwards of 6000 students may seek abortion pills each year once they are available. reggie: as part of our effort to build a better bay area, we are asking questions of politicians and leaders. stephanie sierra sat down with san francisco's new district attorney to talk about the change at the office and some of her expectations. >> and no changes difficult, especially under the circumstances. i think you have to have a management team and structure

that ensures guidelines you set forth are followed by the attorneys appearing in court. that is the biggest thing, making sure that all of the attorneys in the office understand what the policies are, but the vision is, and what those guidelines are. reggie: you can watch stephanie's full interview on our news app and website, abc7news.com. jobina: san francisco supervisor dean preston is supporting efforts by starbucks workers to unionize. introduced a measure calling on san francisco stores to not interfere with workers trying to unionize. he comes as a starbucks workers across the country demand higher wages and better working conditions. two stores in santa cruz became the first ones in california to unionize in may. reggie: if you are looking to visit one of the greatest places in the world, you don't have to go far. san francisco has made it onto another highly-coveted list, time magazine's world's greatest places.

let's take you outside. if you are traveling we have a little bit of fog over the airport, but no delays. the funk this morning is very limited to the coastlines. a marine layer, not as expansive as yesterday. you will see faster sunshine this morning, a warming trend gets underway today, then by the start of the weekend it is sizzling inland. right now a little bit cooler this morning compared to yesterday. a lot of 50's on the board. a couple of low 60's in our warmest spots. the south bay a little bit warmer, but not excessively hot. 79 for cupertino with a lot of sunshine. along the peninsula we will see more sunshine. 79 in redwood city. downtown stays breezy but it is brighter than yesterday. we will see some sunshine in daly city too. north bay, we are into the 80's from -- for the most part.

today and people cannot wait to get a taste. raising canes is known for its famous crispy fried chicken tenders and mayo sauce. this is their first bay-area location. reggie: people flying for vacations are reporting more chaos. first there were delays and cancellations, now many people are just trying to find their luggage. heathrow airport has been about -- been unable to keep up with the flood of suitcases -- thousands piling up. experts say airport staffing levels have not kept up with the surge in post-pandemic travel. delta says it is chartering a jet just to deliver bags stranded in europe back to their owners in the u.s. a florida woman says she lost her bags two weeks ago after she got back from paris. >> every day i check it says it is being traced and check back later. and i have been doing that now every day for 13 days. reggie: heathrow airport is now

limiting the number of daily passengers coming through. amsterdam's airport has now made a similar move. because of those restrictions, some airlines will likely need to cancel or reroute flights, potentially causing more chaos for travelers. not the airport we are both flying through. jobina: that's what i'm saying. reggie: please get it together before we are there. you have like a month and a half. announcer: building a better bay area. moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. reggie: the impact of inflation as the cost of almost everything has gone up. the price of one thing in the bay area that has not fully bounced back. jobina: we were in trouble. hundreds of women now suing the company. their claims about some of the drivers. reggie: paying for perks. why a community college is offering to pay for tuition and other essentials for students. good morning to you. jobina: we are going to begin with a check on the weather. good morning. drew: fog right now is limited to the coastline and in parts of the north bay. visibility is not too dense. we are down to five miles of visibility in half moon bay. we have seen worse over the past week. some limited fog in the north bay, but we will see sunshine a lot quicker this morning compared to yesterday morning. right now cooler compared to

this time yesterday. generally in the 50's for a lot of us. morning, san jose. we'll take you to san rafael. here is a live look at our camera. have a fog, but also clear skies up above. once that sun gets up it will burn that fog off pretty quick later on this morning. so, sunny skies by lunchtime. 60's and 70's away from the coast. today is a warmer afternoon. it is also breezy. you will find 70's and 80's across the bay. we will take a look at the size coming up in about eight minutes. reggie: 9.5 hours in line. people yesterday were sending me messages about how long they were waiting in berkeley to get a monkeypox vaccine. some of them really angry about the way some people paid their way to get a vaccine fast pass. ryan curry is live in san francisco, where the only public drop-in clinic is telling people it is now closed until further notice. ryan: good morning.

that is the unfortunate reality right now about getting this vaccine in the bay area. there is just not a lot of places to get one, and supply is incredibly low. closed until further notice. that is not something a lot of people here are expecting to hear right now, especially as this demand continues to rise. you mentioned the issue in berkeley. abc 7 news went over to steam works where a nine hour wait in some cases to get a dose of this vaccine. some staff telling them they had to wait even for several hours. not nine hours, but it is such a long wait. mentioned that priority paid asu. that is what somebody told us when they were over there. they could not get in because some people paid money and then got the vaccine in a shorter line. the city of berkeley said that was not the intention of this clinic, but those in line tell us that is what happened.

>> the experience i had was very fortunate, and i paid for it. i do think, you know, giving priority to their customers in this particular instance is a bit unethical. >> they have told us that they are working to make sure people in line no there is no priority system. it is one thing if a mistake happens once we -- what you don't want to have happen is a mistake happened twice. there is clearly something that happened today, there were some misperceptions. it is hard to know exactly what happened. ryan: very strange situation over there in berkeley, and across the bay area when it comes to trying to find a vaccine for monkeypox. we did reach out to street -- reach out to steam works yesterday. have not heard back yet. the city says they issued around 500 shots, but this seems to be a struggle for the bay area.

appointment are hard to come by, lines are several hours long, and it is just that issue with demand right now. that supply is so dramatically low for this vaccine. we are live in san francisco, ryan curry, abc 7 news. jobina: one of the country's leading clinical labs is now testing for monkeypox. quest diagnostics has developed a pcr tests that will detect monkeypox virus dna. the company expects to be able to test up to 60,000 people a week by the end of the month. last month the department of health and human services announced five companies would soon begin offering the testing. the cdc has confirmed more than 1000 cases of monkeypox nationwide. we are taking a closer look at the supply issues involving the vaccine in the bay area. you can find those stories on our website, abc7news.com. reggie: turning now to another aspect of building a better bay

area, and a topic each of us notices -- the economy. [bell ringing] yesterday all three u.s. stock markets closed down after reports showed inflation had increased year-over-year in june at the highest rate since 1981. you can see just how much the markets dropped here, and overnight futures have been down again. the dow could open a hundred points down. we are going to get a look at stocks in about an hour. we are all feeling the impact of inflation. the average american household spend $500 more for basic expenses just in june. there is a silver lining. bay area rent prices have not fully rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. according to the rental platform zephyr, rentals in san francisco are still lower than before covid. in san francisco -- san jose prices have started to rebound aztec workers go back to the office.

>> we have seen some increases in compensation to mitigate the impact of inflation, but not to the extent inflation is matching. reggie: kyle holm from sequoia consulting group says many employees are being flexible. -- employers, i should say. which it saves employees on costs like childcare, gas, and food. jobina: if you are buying or selling a home, new data shows bay area home values are cooling quicker than the rest of the country. analysts blame rising inflation, increasing mortgage rates, and falling stock prices, along with the bay area being one of the most expensive places to buy a home. data lists five northern california cities among its top-10 fastest cooling housing markets. san francisco is first and sacramento and stockton are also in the top 10. reggie: the communities around laying around elementary schools

that got vandalized on back-to-back weekends. three schools in richmond were broken into. richmond police say they believe the culprits are teens. officials from the west contra costa county unified school district are trying to assess how much money it is going to take to repair the schools, and getting a boost along the way. >> it has been touching to get the outpouring of support we have received from some people in the community and businesses that have reached out and said they would like to help. reggie: despite the damage, classes are set to resume on time august 16. jobina: 44 people are unaccounted for after severe -- a severe storm hit virginia, bringing heavy rain and flooding to the area. officials say it doesn't mean those people are missing, but they are trying to locate them. right now there are no confirmed deaths, you can see the severe damage from this video. governor of virginia has declared a state of emergency. president biden is in israel.

he is scheduled to meet with isaac hercog and at the former prime minister and current opposition leader benjamin netanyahu. president biden had a one-on-one meeting with israel's new prime minister in jerusalem. the two leaders signed a declaration reaffirming military cooperation and their commitment to keep iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. mr. biden has pushed to revive a deal that president trump withdrew from in 2018. pres. biden: convincing the saudi's and others we mean what we say. it is, we mean what we say. to have an opportunity to accept this agreement has been laid down. if they don't, we have made it clear we will not -- let me say it again -- we will not allow iran to acquire a nuclear weapon. jobina: this we can president biden it is meeting with the arab leaders in saudi arabia as

he seeks to strengthen a region-white alliance against iran. reggie: park led a vigil to remember the victims of the july 4 shooting. hundreds gathered to honor the people who died, and dozens of others recovering from their injuries. vigil comes after the youngest victim, 35-year-old irina mccarthy, was laid to rest. or the week after the tragedy the grief is still fresh. >> tonight we mourn for those who were murdered. we mourn for their families. we mourn for their friends. we mourn for their neighbors. we mourn for our community. reggie: two-year-old aidan mccarthy, who lost both parents in the shooting, is being cared for by relatives. a gofundme campaign to support the toddler has raised more than $3 million. this vigil is the first city-led adventist since the shooting. jobina: brittney griner is in a russian court now for a hearing. last week reiner pleaded guilty

to drug charges, but told the court she did not intend to commit a crime. she was detained in february after vaped canisters with cannabis oil were found in her luggage. she faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. last week sources told our sister network, espn, that her guilty plea was strategic and could help facilitate a prisoner swap. reggie: 550 women are suing over, claiming they were kidnapped, raped, or harassed by drivers for the company. the lawsuit was filed in san francisco on behalf of women in multiple states. the law firm says that another 150 claims are being investigated. the litigation comes weeks after huber released a report showing a received nearly 1000 sexual assault-related complaints just in 2020. we reached out to uber and were told the company cannot comment on pending litigation. instead, a spokesperson provided

reggie: the washburn fire inside yosemite has grown to more than 4200 acres. it is now 23% contained. the fire has also forced the closure of one of the park's main entrances, potentially devastating nearby businesses during the peak season. season's bistro sits about four miles from the southern entrance to the park, close to some of yosemite's popular attractions. the nearest entrance is now about two hours away from there. >> a slight feeling of devastation, because being unsure of how it is going to affect our business here. the employees, you know, having their jobs and their hours. this time of year is our busiest season. reggie: the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it appears to have been started by people. jobina: 4000 beagles will need to be rehome deft or mistreatment at a breeding facility. the humane society will transfer
