bin salman. we know both leaders will greet one another on camera. the president hedging on a question yesterday asking if he will bring up the murder of jamal khashoggi with the crown prince. as president biden wraps up the israeli leg of his mideast tour, all eyes now turn to saudi arabia and what he'll say to saudi officials today about the 2018 murder of "washington post" journalist jamal khashoggi, which the cia concluded was ordered by crown prince mohammed bin salman. >> what will you say to saudi leaders, specifically to mohammad bin salman about the khashoggi murder? >> my views on khashoggi has been absolutely positively clear. and i have never been quiet about talking about human rights. >> reporter: on the campaign trail, biden condemned the killing. >> make them pay the price and make them, in fact, the pariah that they are. >> reporter: but the administration now saying the trip's purpose is to stabilize the middle east, strengthen the u.s./saudi alliance and discuss ways the kingdom can help the

york city apartment dead. police are investigating whether she fell down the stairs and ivanka trump is now reacting to her mother's passing. this morning, former president trump and his children are in mourning after the passing of his first wife ivana trump. shortly after noon on thursday nypd officers responded to a call at the 73-year-old's manhattan apartment. trump found unconscious and unresponsive at the bottom of a staircase. she was pronounced dead at the scene. her ex-husband announcing her death on social media saying, quote, she was a wonderful, beautiful and amazing woman who led a great and inspirational life. her pride and joy were her three cildren, donald jr., ivanka and eric. she was so proud of them as we were all so proud of her. rest in peace, ivana. ivanka trump posted this picture of her with her mother writing, quote, mom was brilliant, charming, passionate and wickedly funny. she lived life to the fullest. i will miss her forever. son eric seen leaving her home. >> it's been a very sad day,

bye to saint-tropez where i spend all summer long so i declined. >> reporter: the former power couple friends. until the very end. >> it's wrong. isn't it? >> but it feels so right. the last bite. >> actually you're only entitled to half. >> reporter: a friend of ivana says she was planning to leave for a trip to saint-tropez today. it would have been her first trip since the start of the pandemic. the secret service is denying text messages related to the attack on the capitol were intentionally deleted. the department of homeland security's inspector general told lawmakers that text messages from january 5th and 6th of last year were erased after they were requested for the investigation into the insurrection. the watchdog was told the messages were deleted as part of a device replacement program. the secret service says that program was well under way when it received the request for those texts. now to the covid-19 summer surge. health officials are warning of new mask mandates in some areas including l.a. county if the current trend continues. abc's morgan norwood has the very latest. >> reporter: with the ba.5 variant quickly spreading around

the country, the nation's largest county is bringing back its mask mandate in two weeks. residents in los angeles county now bracing for the change. >> we have to be as prudent and careful as possible. >> reporter: the latest cdc data confirms that los angeles county, home to 10 million people, is seeing, quote, high covid transmission. the federal agency suggests wearing masks in indoor public places including schools. hospitalizations in los angeles county now up 88%. in new york city where new cases are up 30% in the past two weeks officials have done away with their color-coded covid alert system but are now working on a new one, many not willing to take a step back. >> i don't feel like i need to wear a mask at this point. >> reporter: the latest spread fueled by the highly transmissible omicron subvariant ba.5 that has health experts on alert. >> the thing about ba.5 that is disconcerting is that it is able to escape some of the immune protection that you get from prior infection, as well as vaccination. >> reporter: from coast to coast three-fourths of americans now

living in counties with medium or high risk of covid. the cdc now urging people in those high-risk areas to mask up indoors. >> the good news is vaccinated and boosted people particularly those who received the full component of the boosting are generally pretty well protected against severe disease. >> reporter: morgan norwood, abc news, los angeles. >> morgan, thank you. in ukraine the search for victims continues after missiles struck civilian targets. at least 23 people are dead and 100 others wounded after missiles fell in a central ukrainian city. ukraine's foreign minister called the bombing a war crime. a 4-year-old girl believed to have been killed in the attack, is seen in the video recorded moments before the shelling. abc's tom soufi burridge has more from the scene. >> reporter: imagine this area midmorning downtown in a major ukrainian city. and look what the russian missiles have done here. the russians would have known that this area would have been packed with families and children.

>> russia claims it was targeting military officials. texas is suing the biden administration over federal rules requiring abortions to be provided in emergencies to save a mother's life. the guidance is based on the emergency medical treatment and labor act and overrides laws in states with near total abortion bans. the texas attorney general accused the white house of mandating that physicians must perform abortionone ofheenrongf convicted of killing malcolm x is suingormuhammad aziz accused. the 84-year-old spent two decades in prison and was exonerated last year. a record drug bust in california. about 1 million fentanyl-laced pills were seized during a raid in los angeles taken from the home of someone's home linked to mexican traffickers. the pills have an estimated value of at least $15 million. time now for a look at your morning weather.

new video shows an alleged drunk driver slamming through a donut shop. it happened last friday morning in nashville. fortunately, no one was hurt and no one was in the shop. the driver was charged with dui. today a buffalo supermarket that was the scene of a mass shooting is set to reopen. yesterday marked two months since the shooting at the tops grocery store. dozens gathered to honor the ten victims, all of them black, who police say were killed by a white supremacist. the city's mayor says reopening the store is what's best for the community. >> to demolish the store, to try to rebuild the store someplace else could have taken years. the residents of this community don't deserve to have to wait

for years to be able to comfortably shop in their neighborhood because of the ations of somebody with hate in their heart. >> also yesterday the shooting suspect was indicted on federal hate crime charges. if convicted the 19-year-old could face the death penalty. investigators now say a 13-year-old boy was not driving a pickup truck involved in a deadly crash in texas. the truck slammed into a van in march, killing six college golfers and their coach along with the boy and his father. investigators initially suggested the boy was behind the wheel. but a new report says dna testing confirmed the father was driving and there was meth in his system. a solar panel installer is being called a guardian angel after rescuing a special needs child who wandered from home. jack manna was on the job when a mother alerted him that her 5-year-old daughter was missing in plymouth, massachusetts. manna joined the search and found the girl in a bay waist deep in mud and water. >> i saw a diaper and a t-shirt just floating down the riff.

suits, training entomologists and even using drones as it tries to eradicate the bug that is mainly found in whatcom county. the state has destroyed four nests. so far this season none have been caught. >> no news is good news, right? no news can be good news. we would love to not find any hornets and not find any nests. >> reporter: the asian giant hornets are nicknamed murder hornets because they can kill an entire honeybee hive in a matter of hours. honeybees are essential in pollinating crops, which washington state agriculture relies on. >> the faster we find them, the faster we can remove a nest. and we get to a nest early enough, nothing from the nest will be able to row produce. >> reporter: a murder hornet sting can kill a human. while no murder hornet deaths have been reported in the u.s., up to 50 people a year die from their stings in japan. in washington state, the public is encouraged to make their own traps by cutting a hole in a water bottle, mixing equal parts
