state of their own that's independent, sovereign, viable and contiguous. >> reporter: biden is again backing a two-state solution to the conflict but spent little time focused on the crisis during his trip. instead all eyes are on his controversial visit to saudi arabia. biden later today set to come face-to-face with saudi crown prince mohammed bin salman who u.s. intelligence concluded approved the brutal murder of jamal khashoggi, something the saudis deny. as a candidate, biden vowed the saudis would be punished. >> we are, in fact, going to make them pay the price and make them, in fact, the pariah that they are. >> reporter: but now, the president won't say if he will even raise the issue directly with the crown prince. >> i always bring up human rights but my position on khashoggi has been so clear, if anyone doesn't understand it, in saudi arabia or anywhere else, then they haven't been around for awhile. >> reporter: what's changed?

high gas prices at home. biden hoping to increase the flow of oil from the region back to the u.s. though, biden insists the trip is about stability in the middle east. saudi arabia overnight announcing it's opening its airspace, ending the ban on flights to and from israel. a symbolic step towards normalizing relations between the two countries. the president praising the move calling it an important step towards building a more integrated and stable middle east region. now, don't expect any major breakthroughs though in israeli/saudi relations. that is going to take some time and the chances of getting an oil deal may be slimmer and even if the saudis do up the flow of oil back to the u.s. there is no guarantee that that would be enough to bring down those sky-high gas prices back at home. >> meantime, mary, back at home there is tough news for the president's climate agenda. >> reporter: george, this is a crushing blow to the president's agenda. west virginia democrat joe manchin announcing to the party that he is not going to support funding for climate programs or to raise taxes on the wealthy.

democrats have spent months trying to tweak their plans doing anything they could to get manchin on board, but, george, this effectively kills biden's hopes for a climate change agenda and that sweeping social safety net bill that had things like paid family leave and universal pre-k, those hopes all but dead. >> inflation one of manchin's reasons. let's go to elwyn lopez in atlanta with an update on gas prices. >> reporter: hey, george, good morning. high gas prices are top of mind during the president's visit there. here in georgia we are seeing some of the cheapest with regular at about $4 a gallon, but nationwide drivers are still paying up. take a look at this. nearly $1.50 more per gallon than this time last year, the average now at $4.57. prices declining for 30 days since they hit a record high in june. the worst prices, though, are still out west. california even nearing the $6 mark but experts say you can now find gas under $4 a gallon in more than half of the country.

very much for that. i know the afternoon i spent with her was incredibly memorable. she was so confident. so sassy and she could make me laugh even talking about tough subjects. >> you can see it that interview. we warranty to turn now to that major development in the january 6th investigation. that development is that the secret service deleted a large number of text messages on its devices from january 5th and 6th. that's according to a government watchdog group. lawmakers are now raising some serious concerns and our congressional correspondent rachel scott has the latest for us this morning. hello there, rachel. >> reporter: t.j., good morning. yes, lawmakers say this is deeply concerning. the inspector general, an independent watchdog with the department of homeland security, says that the secret service not only deleted many text messages around the time of january 6th but that they did it after his office requested them. the inspector general telling lawmakers that there have been delays and confusion in how these records have been turned over but this morning the secret service is pushing back. in a statement to abc news

stating the insinuation that the secret service maliciously deleted text messages following a request is false. in fact, the secret service has been fully cooperatig. the department says well above -- before that request was made it was in the process of updating its mobile phones and resetting them and because of that some of the data was lost. they insist that it's nothing the inspector general was looking for, but now with two different sides to this story, lawmakers are trying to figure out a way to get to the bottom of this, leaders on both sides this morning calling for transparency. george. >> rachel scott, thanks. we're going to get the latest now on the pandemic. l.a. county has moved from medium to high risk for the spread of the virus. the nation's most populous county preparing to bring back an indoor mask mandate if the covid surge continues. kaylee hartung is tracking the story. good morning, kaylee. >> reporter: this is not the direction anyone wants to be heading. this morning, here in l.a. county, the nation's largest county, home to 10 million people, we could be two weeks away from reinstating an indoor mask mandate here and since

april hospitalizations here are up 88% and they have doubled across the country. this latest wave being fueled by the highly transmissible subvariant ba.5 and this comes just as the number of americans dying of covid once again is on the rise too, up 10% in just the last week with nearly 350 deaths reported every day in this country. right now we have three-quarters of americans living in counties from medium to high risk for covid and the cdc urges if you're in a high risk area you should mask up indoors. if you're in a medium risk area consider it based on your individual risk. amy. >> all right, kaylee hartung. thank you. now to the cleanup effort in virginia following those devastating floods. fortunately everyone who was unaccounted for has now been found. trevor ault is on the scene in virginia with the latest on all of that. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, amy. seeing the damage here, it's unbelievably good news that officials have been able to locate those dozens of people who were unaccounted for, but there is a long road to recover for this community.

look at this house in the middle of the street here. neighbors tell me the family moved in just a couple of weeks ago and then tuesday night the flash flood swept it clean off its foundation, dragged it over here across the road to the point of almost a house-on-house collision and the only thing that stopped it was that blue suv that drifted and wedged underneath the house. look at the side yard. all mud. that's what is it looks like on a lot of lower floors. the homeowner isn't sure their house will be salvageable and this is just one street corner. there are at least 100 homes severely damaged and the smashed vehicles, the lost belongings, so many people without power and have zero cell service and have a lot of their roads cut off. it is incredibly impressive the officials found them given the circumstances but as you can see there is a lot of work left to be done. amy. >> so much devastation, trevor ault, thank you. t.j. we turn now to those horrific images after a russian missile strike on a central ukrainian city.

at least 23 people including 3 children dead. more than 100 people were injured in what officials there are calling an open attack on civilians. our foreign correspondent tom soufi burridge has the latest. >> reporter: the aftermath of a russian strike on a university posted by a local official. putin's troops pounding the southern city not far from the fighting almost every day and this, the terrifying moment a missile hits vinnytsia in central ukraine blowing out shop windows in surveillance video posted by a ukrainian official. this morning, dozens of people still missing. more than 30 seriously injured. so far, 23 confirmed dead. three of the victims children including 4-year-old leeza, seen here in video thought to be moments before the explosion. this her stroller at the scene. this morning her mom in intensive care. nearby cyclists knocked to the ground, pedestrians and their pets running for their lives in more surveillance video posted online, and seconds after the blast, a thick cloud of smoke casting this massive shadow.

>> reporter: wearing a nirvana t-shirt and locked in a steel white cage during the trial. on thursday, three russian character witnesses including a top basketball boss testifying in her defense. the director of the russian league griner plays for calling her an outstanding basketball player, saying she traveled to russia despite the u.s. warning against it because she was feeling confident. the team doctor testifying that griner never tested positive for doping while playing for the team. >> the fact that the russian government allowed brittney griner's russian teammates and management to testify on her behalf is actually a positive sign. it means that they're letting her make her case for leniency. >> reporter: the two-time olympian and wnba star is facing up to ten years in prison detained since february after russian police say they found vape cartridges in her luggage containing hashish oil illegal there. griner pleaded guilty, saying the vape cartridges accidentally ended up in her bag. >> i would like to plead guilty

>> reporter: good morning, george. a shocking twist in the south now accused of shooting and killing his own wife and son. this morning, alex murdaugh facing charges accused of killing his wife and son just over a year ago. on thursday, a south carolina grand jury indicting murdaugh o alleging that he fatally shot maggie with a rifle and 22-year-old paul with a shotgun. >> are they breathing? >> no, ma'am. my wife and my son. >> and what is your name? >> my name is alex murdaugh. please hurry. neither one of them is moving. >> reporter: it was 13 months ago that murdaugh called 911 to report finding them brutally shot outside their rural south carolina home. at the time his brothers randy and john marvin saying he was distraught. when did you hear from alex about that something had happened at his property? >> so i got a call from alex

monday night and as soon as i answered the phone i knew something was wrong. oh, man. he just told me, he said come as fast as you can. paul and maggie have been hurt. >> so when you got there, what -- how was he? >> he was standing at a distance looking on like in disbelief crying and sobbing. unable to talk and he would try to talk and he would break down. it was very difficult. >> reporter: the bodies were found on the sprawling rural property away from the main house near the family's dog kennels. this photo from dailymail.com shows the kennels up close. authorities haven't revealed a possible motive for the gruesome double murder. >> all rise. >> reporter: in the year since the murders, the once-prominent attorney has faced dozens of other charges and multiple

lawsuits related to a series of allegations including that he was stealing money from clients of his family's law firm. insurance fraud and allegedly trying to stage his own murder. murdaugh's attorney saying in a statement, alex wants his family and friends and everyone to know that he did not have anything to do with the murders of maggie and paul. he loved them more than anything in the world. and alex murdaugh is currently already behind bars on those other charges. he will be back in court next week for a bond hearing in the double murder case, george. >> eva pilgrim, thanks. let's bring in our chief legal analyst dan abrams. this case has been out there a long time. why file the charges now? >> ever since september when he was arrested they've been digging in to his past and they've been digging into the evidence. in fact, there have been new charges filed every couple months, it went from 40 something to 70 something, it's now 85 charges that he's facing

mostly financial so i think as part of that they've been investigating very deeply the murder looking at his alibi, looking at the physical evidence, talking to witnesses and i think as a result of that, we saw what happened. >> there's also been some chatter about whether he got special treatment. >> yeah, he and his son in connection with that earlier boating incident. you have to ask yourself the question, since this happened so many months ago, why wasn't he initially treated as a suspect? i think that the authorities would say we've always had questions about him. we've always wondered. we've just been investigating but i think that's something that they'll look into now, which is was he treated the same way that everyone else would have been. >> one other thing, the death of the housekeeper as well. >> yeah, because, remember, she died in the house and i think you'll see a sort of investigation akin to the staircase, the documentary that so many have seen where they're now exhuming the body and they're going to look to see the physical evidence associated with her death. does it make sense that she tripped over the dogs in the house or just fell down the stairs, or was this blunt trauma

october or into november we risk new breeding nests and new queens being produced. that's something that we definitely want to avoid. >> reporter: the state deploying a thousand traps training entomologists testing new suits and equipment and for the first time ever planning to use drones to track hornets tagged by scientists in hopes of finding a nest. a research team even traveling to south korea to learn more about the invasive species. >> the biggest question that we need to have answered is how far do new queens fly before they decide to stop and make them a nest? that is something no one has ever figured out. >> reporter: four nests have been destroyed since the asian giant hornets were first discovered in the u.s. in 2019. a nest the size of a basketball vacuumed out of this tree north of seattle in 2020 and nearly 1500 hornets wiped out when another nest was found nearby in 2021. they're the world's largest hornet species as big as two inches long. that's five times the size of

impact of moderate alcohol consumption. abc news medical contributor dr. darien sutton is here to break down two new studies, the first focuses on the cognitive decline. >> a study done in the uk looks at over 20,000 participants. their alcohol consumption and corresponding mri images of their brain and they found that those who had moderate consumption which was defined as four drinks per week was associated to increased levels of iron in the brain and, george, the reason why that's important is because, prior studies have then that increase iron accumulation is associated to early cognitive decline as well as early onset dementia. but it's important to know when looking at a study like this, it shows an association and not necessarily a cause and effect as there are other causes to dementia such as family history, hypertension and diabetes and high blood pressure as well as a history of trauma. >> it focused on those under 40 alcohol.problems because >> it is a global f consumption which in this study was defined as two drinks per day which is relatively the

maximum that we recommend from the cdc was associated to an increase risk of harm for those under the age of 40 compared to older age groups and this is important because we currently recommend that and we have to figure out whether or not we should adjust our regulations or recommendations for those specifically younger age groups to decrease their risk. but it's important to know in a study like this when looking at younger age groups, there's an association to alcohol consumption and high risk behaviors which change the results. >> your recommendations, a safe relationship with alcohol? >> i always recommend we stick to the cdc guidelines up until we have new changes that can be more specific for age groups. right now the cdc recommends that men drink no more than two drinks per day and women no more than one drink per day and binge drinking is defined for men as more than five drinks in one setting and women it's more than four drinks in one setting. i always recommend you want to get as close to the minimum as possible and not reach the maximum. >> what raises red flags for you? >> for me it's really a

dependence on alcohol and signs of that include when you're not drinking are you craving it, having symptoms of shakiness or nausea. is alcohol disrupting your social and personal relationships? if you have those signs or symptoms you should reach out for help because alcohol and substance use disorder is more common than we think and many people don't realize there is help. if you can't find a primary care provider there is a mental health and national substance abuse hotline that you can search and you can find state and local resources within your community. >> dr. darien sutton, thanks very much. t.j. now to "crazy rich asians" star constance wu revealing that she attempted suicide after receiving backlash for some posts on social media. eva pilgrim back with that %-p. >> reporter: hawaii -- hey, t.j., constance wu saying she is dipping her toe back into social media after some severe backlash over what she calls some careless tweets. she's hoping sharing her experience can help others. her career was on fire. constance wu starring in films like "crazy rich asians." >> you know, when you said you

two chinese boys on tv. >> reporter: the 40-year-old tweeted so upset right now that i'm literally crying. when a fan wrote ongrats on your renewal, great news, wu responded, no, it's not. wu's comments sparking concern. the actress later clarifying that she was disappointed because the renewal meant she'd have to turn down a passion project. wu eventually deleted her account altogether. >> social media is like peer interaction on steroids and so any potentially negative experience can really be intensified. >> reporter: wu writing in her latest tweet, i felt awful about what i said and when a few dms from a fellow asian actress told me i'd become a blight on the asian american community, i started feeling like i didn't deserve to live anymore. >> i would encourage you to think for yourself the way you encourage your class to think for themselves. >> reporter: the actress now saying she wants to help people talk about the uncomfortable stuff in order to understand it, reckon with it and open pathways to healing.

between humans and sharks than they ever imagined. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: this morning, new research from the university of california, long beach, revealing how much humans and great white sharks unwittingly interact every single day in beaches in southern california. >> we're taking the zodiac. > reporter: we joined chris lowe and director of cal state's shark lab on the water. behind us is a typical southern california beach where shark lab conducts a lot of its studies. this one is home to over a dozen great white shark juveniles and on any given day there are dozens of encounters between those sharks and swimmers and surfers here. cruising just offshore we reach our first juvenile great white shark habitat. >> for probably the first time in 20 years that i've been working here we have a juvenile white shark nursery something aggregation. >> what does it mean?

>> this is where they like to come and hang out. >> this is a good thing because it means the ecosystem is functioning as it should. >> actually this is a great thing because it shows us that conservation work, right? white sharks are protected in california in 1994. their food sources come back, marine mammals have recovered better than we thought possible and that requires cleaner water, cleaner air, all those things, so i would argue that this nursery here is a great sign that california is doing things well to bring the health of its ocean back. >> reporter: the team gathering its data on juvenile sharks through tagging made possible by the deployment of a swarm of drones over california beaches. >> the drones have been an invaluable tool. they've basically given us that eye in the sky perspective that not only let us look at what the sharks are doing but what they're doing around people. >> reporter: what they learned is sharks are, in fact, swimming with and around people whether we realize it or not. there are literally thousands of interactions a year. >> basically at the end of the

day, where you have aggregations you can quite often have lots of people. encountering these sharks daily. >> do the people know they're encountering them? >> they do not. as long as we don't chase them, they ignore people. >> reporter: now this sounds terrifying, right, that there are many thousands of encounters between humans and sharks off the coast of caliornia. but shark lab wants us to think about it this way. of these thousands of encounters very few turn bad. the vast majority are peaceful and it's possible that sharks are actually learning to avoid humans. now, if you want to see more of this you can watch the special streaming on the national geographic channel right now on its annual shark fest called "sky shark." t.j. >> i missed what you said after this all sounds terrifying, matt. but thank you so much. all right. we turn from sharks to
