it is highly organized. these individuals often planned months in advance, where to steal, where to style, and many of it is under the radar. how can you tell what you are buying online is not stolen? it was a bus that surprised many. as san francisco man was able to steal, stuck in resell goods in his apartment. police say there are many operations like this across the bay area. >> this arrest could open cases on several other open investigations and lead to more arrests. >> this police sergeant says there has been a noticeable spike in these fencing operations in the mid market area. how do they work? he says they often start small, using middlemen who try to offload stolen items as fast as possible. >> they are selling hundreds of

thousands of dollars of goods online nationally. >> according to an analysis by the senate judiciary committee, there is more than $500 billion worth of stolen and counterfeit items sold online worldwide each year. in some cases, it is the online retailers tipping off investigators. this lieutenant says ebay contacted them about wednesday's fencing suspect. >> we followed up, there was no crazy undercover process to it, we followed up with what they saw, saw the same thing and took steps with working with everybody to identify who he was. reporter: what is being done to crackdown? a state senator introduced a bill that puts more responsibility on the online marketplace, tightening requirements for sellers. >> the market place has to get information like their business license, the receipt of goods, those kinds of things to prove they are the owners of these goods in a legitimate way and

they haven't been stolen. reporter: investigators say these crime rings operate on sites we all use like ebay, craigslist and amazon. what should we look out for? >> what you want to look for is if a seller is brand-new, they've never sold anything before, especially if it is an expensive purse or watch. or if it is bulk. if it is brand-new, a whole case, you have to wonder where they came up with a whole case. if it doesn't pass the smell test. >> another tip from michael, if you buy an item that is stolen, you could be subject to legal prosecution. that is unlikely, especially if you bought it unknowingly, but it is important to remember that legally it is not yours. as for the senators legislation, if it passes, it will protect consumers and retailers. it is moving to the assembly, it has passed the senate.

>> thank you. michael finney joins us now with another story, of a danville mom who suspects she received counterfeit nikes and paid more than 50% above retail for them. feds worn this issue may be more common than we suspect. reporter: it is everywhere. the amount of counterfeit products seized annually exceeded $1 billion in the most recent report from authorities. here is what you can do to protect yourself. jessica examines a pair of nikes she bought online. as soon as she took them out of the box, purse son flagged them. >> he was like, mom, i am not entirely sure, these look fake. reporter: she found several videos on youtube advising consumers how to tell fake nikes from real ones. the problem of counterfeits is apparently so pervasive that these idiots have hundreds of thousands of views. they advised to look at the stitching and embroidery and if

you find flaws, it is likely counterfeit. >> it is kind of hard to see, but there is this stitching on the heel. they are not equally spaced. reporter: holding the shoes under a black light at home, she said she found more issues. >> when you shine the black light, you can see diecut lines. uv diecut lines on where the black leather should be lighting up. reporter: homeland security investigations can confirm her shoes are fake, and they offer to look into it. flaws in workmanship are a good indicator something may be counterfeit. >> the most telling indicator is the quality. the stitching is off. reporter: federal authorities these more athletic shoes than any other counterfeited items, except handbags and wallets, which top the list, followed by clothing and accessories. the latest statistics show that

in fiscal year 2020, customs and border patrol seized $1.3 billion worth of counterfeits. >> you should care because you want to buy quality, if you are spending your hard earned dollars, especially now, in a challenging economic environment, you want to make sure you buy a product that lasts. reporter: jessica says she tried to return the shoes for a full refund but the website refused to return three different times. with some help from us, she received a chargeback from her credit card company. now she has a pair of what she calls free fakes. >> the arch support hurts so they are definitely not built the same. reporter: customs and border patrol tell us counterfeiters of gotten quite good at what they do. manufacturers have shared with them proprietary information to help agents identify fakes. they suggest only buying from online retailers you actually

from his shoulder on his shirt. reporter: his 11-year-old son was one of six people hit by celebratory gunfire. >> he had to have surgery this past friday. reporter: july 5, the oakland police chief, the a's and the mayor told us that people were hit by fragments it wasn't until we broke the story that people were hit by bullets and not fragments. this person had a full round removed from her hand. >> a fragment? it is not right. reporter: today at the oakland-alameda county coliseum authority meeting, officials reiterated that oakland police say the gunfire came from a mile away. officials also say there was no security breach on coliseum property. i consulted with two firearms experts, including donald, who spent 31 years with the fbi.

he says it is nearly impossible to determine the distance a bullet travels. >> you've got weather conditions and wind and there are a lot of determining factors. those are variables to determine how far away the round was fired from. i think it is extremely problematic. reporter: could it then as close at -- could it have been as close as the parking lot? >> that's possible. reporter: police said they would get back to me. albert says he heard from someone from the a's shortly after the fourth but it wasn't what he wanted to hear. >> extended his condolences and offered tickets to an a's game and he would sit us in a suite for that one game and biased food for that game. offended is the word i would use peer -- i would use. reporter: albert says his son never wants to go to a game again. >> there needs to be some remedy offered to him. this isn't about me or his mom, it's about the six people that

got shot. that is it. reporter: in oakland, dion lynn. >> today the federal government announced it has ordered 2.5 million more doses of the moxie -- monkeypox vaccine and san francisco set to receive more than 4000. but as leon melendez tells us, some organizations call it a complete failure of our health system. reporter: just last week, 500 people on the waiting list for the monkeypox vaccine. today, the number has grown exponentially. >> we have over 3000 folks on our waiting list. reporter: last week the white house reported 144,000 doses would be on their way nationwide, but as of today, the need much greater than the allocation. it is up to the california department of health to distribute them to county health officials. earlier in the week, san francisco sounded the alarm, saying it needed the initial

it grew to more than 4700 acres overnight and is just 31% contained. the highway 41 entrance remains closed. the fire has also crossed into the sierra national forest, prompting more road closures. park officials say so far, no giant sequoias have burned. we got our first look today at the mariposa grove and all of the trees are still standing. the cause is under investigation but officials say it appears to have been started by a person. in contra costa county, a stubborn welfare has been causing air quality concerns for residents. a fire burning in peat is nearly impossible to put out, according to firefighters. an air quality alert is in effect through monday. >> it has been good to moderate

in that area right now, and i want to show you the air quality for eastern contra costa county through monday because of the wildfire smoke. while the overall air quality for the bay area expected to remain good, the concern is smoke from that fire will still impact the region like it did last night and even this morning where you start to see deteriorating air quality. around rio vista, it is moderate right now. as we check out the conditions near the fire, 85 degrees, southwesterly winds gusting to 12 miles per hour. that wind direction is responsible for pushing some of that smoke away and it will remain in the southwest direction at least for the next few hours. when the winds relax a little bit, the smoke could build again. the concern is it will be heating up tomorrow even though it will be hot on sunday as well. temperatures will slowly come down. if you don't have air conditioning, obviously it will be hard to keep doors and windows closed to avoid exposure
