>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. stephanie: passengers forced to evacuate from san francisco airport's international terminal after a suspicious package was found. this unfolding during one of the busiest periods. it is saturday, july 16. i am stephanie sierra. we will have much more on the evacuation in just a moment. first we begin with a quick check of the forecast. here is lisa argen. drew: -- lisa: the marine layer is getting more compressed as the sun comes up. the visible picture. the fog is not only of the coast but extending over into oakland,

el cerrito, hayward, vallejo. sonny here though. temperatures are mild downtown in oakland with low to mid 60's from the peninsula to the south bay. a look at emeryville. low clouds and some sunshine in between. 60 at santa rosa. 67. less of a delta breeze. 59 with the cloud cover in santa cruz. going to about 79 today. by noon time we are sunny except to the 70's and 80's bayside and inland. temperatures coming up today above average into the mid to upper 90's. we will talk about a subtle cooling trend coming up. stephanie: thank you. developing an on view, police are searching for a suspect wanted for shooting a police officer and car stop overnight. the officer is in the hospital. he was hit in the upper body. the officer was wearing his vest and is expected to be ok. police say the shooting happened in downtown mountain view just

after midnight. the officer was conducting a traffic stop at villa and wild cherry when the driver opened fire. they say that suspect drove off before crashing at higdon and villa. we are learning about the injured officer. he's a five-year veteran of the department. police say he was working in overtime shift accusing on dui patrol when he stopped the driver involved in the shooting. thus. we are tracking developing news involving a bomb threat at sfo that forced passengers to evacuate. san francisco police had given the all clear. the international terminal is back open. police have safely removed multiple suspicious packages. no word on what those packages were. this started around 815 last night. thousands of people including travelers and employees had to evacuate the international terminal.

many posted about it on social media. police have made no arrest but they are talking to a man in connection to what happened. >> officers made contact with an adult male who they detained and discovered there were suspicious packages that could possibly in incendiary device. it has not been determined at this point whether those items are in fact incendiary devices that could be set off. at this time the adult male we detained is still speaking with us and part of our investigation. stephanie: if you're flying out of sfo this morning, the airport is urging passengers to check with their airline for flight information. allow extra time. with the evacuation breaking last night we sent this notification on the abc 7 bay area app. if you want alerts like this, download the app from the app

store. turning to monkeypox. your health is a key focus of building a better bay area. more local counties are saying they need more vaccine. oakland's vice mayor penned a letter to health officials requesting doses amid two more probable cases. in the south bay there is a distribution strategy that the man's doses be given to those at highest risk first. as amanda del castillo explains, there's potential for relief across the region. >> it seems like we can't catch a break. amanda: southbay assembly member evan lo pointing to health concerns. he has witnessed your demand for the monkeypox vaccine. hours long lines amid limited supply. >> while the percentages are relatively small given our population, this can easily grow quite rapidly. it's incumbent upon us as government officials to nip

this in the butt as soon as possible. amanda: he says it's imperative the lgbtq plus has the support it needs. santa clara county connected with local outreach groups early on. >> that's an effort we think will be quite fruitful in reaching the people at highest risk for getting monkeypox now. amanda: dr. george hahn said the county had 11 cases on friday. the majority of close contacts have been from sexual contact. santa clara county received 742 doses of the vaccine, administering 30 so far. the vaccine is being made available by invitation only. >> we have to identify people who have monkeypox, get them tested, interview them to see who their close contacts were. amanda: different from the covid-19 response, the doctor does not anticipate monkeypox will rise to the level of

needing mass vaccination events. the current supply would not support such an effort. >> the government needs to understand the importance of getting to the community quickly, safely, and we have a readily available supply. amanda: lo supporting other leaders and their demand for the federal government to do more. a move that highlights the region's connectedness, especially when dealing with health concerns. >> we are working with other counties to think about how we could set up vaccination efforts that make sense that are not necessarily limited by county quarters. amanda: abc 7 news. stephanie: in san francisco, the health department is inspecting 4000 doses next week. it is not nearly what they hold for. san francisco said it needed 35,000 doses. the san francisco aids foundation had 500 people on the waiting list for the vaccine last week.

that number has since grown and financially. some people are concerned upcoming street fairs with large gatherings will spark an outbreak. >> we should have learned from the previous epidemic that we had to be more proactive taking action. stephanie: the federal government ordered 2.5 million doses of the vaccine yesterday. those doses are not scheduled to arrive until next year. in berkeley, the management of a club that held the vaccine clinic is explaining their planning changes for next time. some people waiting in line to get the vaccine at steam works on wednesday complained after paying members of the club were allowed inside first. yesterday the general manager explained many were wearing robes and bath towels and had to receive the vaccine inside. he said it was a misunderstanding and told abc 7 news from now on all vaccine will be administered outside. >> next week the plan is outside only. one line. i have them checking out our

parking lot, which is where we may have it. hoping for 500 doses again. that is the deal. stephanie: steam works has administered 800 monkeypox vaccines so far. want to know more about monkeypox? visit abc7news.com to get information on cases, testing and vaccines across the bay area. more shakeups in the san frcisco district attorney's office. yesterday the da announced a promotion and some layoffs. here is phil matier's perspective on the changes. >> there are two kind of changes. one is when you take over from someone you are friendly with and the transitions are very slow and you bring in your own team in your own appointees. the second is when you take over from somebody you are opposed to. that is what happens when you have a new governor or president. you bring in your own people. this is happening quickly.

i think the reason is brooke jenkins does not have a lot of time. she wants to make sure she has a full light in front of her that will help her out. stephanie: jenkins is expected to be on the november ballot for san francisco da. now to new developments on the washburn fire in yosemite. more than 4800 acres and 37% contained. the higher 41 entrance remains closed. the fire has crossed into the cr national forest, prompting more road closures. park officials say no giant sequoias have burned. we got our first look at the mariposa grove and all the trees still standing. the cause is under investigation. fire officials say it appears to have been started by a person. in the east bay efforts to put out the smoldering marsh fire in pittsburgh ramped up. sky 7 was over the scene flooding the area. millions of gallons will be needed to flood the marsh for the next week to reduce smoke.

macarthur maze, raising concerns about safety. caltrans is correlating with both oakland and alameda county to get the nearly 200 people living at the site access to shelter beds. the family of alexis gabe will look for her once again this morning. this search is played in oakley near her iphone's screen protector was found. gabe disappeared in january. she was seen leaving the antioch home of her ex-boyfriend marshall jones. jones was killed by a law enforcement in june when police moved in to arrest him at a seattle suburb. he reportedly charged them with a knife. cerews have scoured pioneer and sierra foothills based on notes written by jones. the leader of a san francisco nonprofit is in the hospital after being beaten yesterday morning. friends say it happened outside the community center he helps run in the fillmore district. the incident is turning into a call to action. abc 7 news reporter tara

campbell has the story. >> why would anyone be hit with a two by four. that is serious. it is serious for the community to be challenged with lawlessness and violence. tara: reverend amos brown is san francisco's naacp leader and pastor of third baptist church, just blocks from the community center where james spangola was attacked on friday. >> beaten by a homeless person with a two by four because he asked them to leave the grounds, which he had the right to do as director of the program. tara: police responding to the call just after 11:00 in the morning outside the community center. in a statement saying one suspect was arrested on the scene and there working to locate a second. as far as james's condition, we know his injuries are not life-threatening. >> he had swelling in his head.

thank god it is not worse. tara: why do you think -- do you think james was targeted? why do you think james was -- >> not just james. the black community has been targeted. it has nothing to do with one individual. it is a systemic problem. tara: calling on the board of supervisors and others to do more to tamp down on the homelessness crisis. >> we are not put forth the collective efforts on the part of all of the leaders and citizens from all walks of life to say enough is enough. tara: that's exactly what reverend arnold townsend to say. he has lived and served in the district for decades and knows james well. >> 's leadership -- his leadership around the issues and difficult issues in our community has been essential. tara: describing james as someone devoted to the community and to his youth.

>> someone intensely concerned about young people, to help them set a path and a course for themselves or they become contributors to the community. tara: he too was calling for more accountability and more help for people on the streets. >> without giving people an opportunity to live well is really just setting them up for a lifetime of failure. we have got to do better at approaching these issues. tara: tara campbell, abc 7 news. stephanie: rep. brown: says they are planning a community meeting on friday and inviting the police chief and local leaders to discuss a way forward to find solutions to the violence and growing homelessness crisis. the city of the silica is investigating another possible hate crime. pacifica police say two portable classrooms are broken into at sunset ridge school. both were ransacked.

in one officer found a doll with a swastika inscribed on the forehead. another incident happened last month when a person stole a pride flag. it reappeared days later tattered and burned. san jose's parks department is asking for help renaming columbus park. a large part located south of the airport was named for the famous italian explorer. columbus has been criticized for his treatment of indigenous people in recent years. when the community was asked if they wanted to change the park's name, 75% said yes. the department has posted an online survey listing 19 names. freda callow, harvey milk and rosa parks. the top three will get to a final vote. san francisco's presidio park will officially open tomorrow. the ribbon-cutting was six years in the making. the project began with a

with 6% relative humidity. when you're underneath the inversion we are good with the cool temperatures, the higher relative humidity in the onshore flow. going above the inversion, above 1000 feet things are significantly drier. as we look at live doppler 7 you can see the visible picture showing the low clouds and fog shrouding the coast from marin county down through san mateo. getting a closer it is still gray and parts of the city. the eastern part is sunny with going across the bay. sunshine around 580 in hayward. up towards vallejo some lingering fog. not for log. this was a nice shot of the east bay. it pretty much got overexposed. 57 downtown. 62 at palo alto. 65, santa clara. 54 at the coast. pretty picture of the cloud deck here dispersing from emeryville. numbers ranging from the cool

low 50's where we have the low clouds and fog to nearly the upper 60's from concord to the delta. the southwest wind has backed off. almost8 miles per hour.an indict will be. we had some mist and drizzle earlier. we will see temperatures in the 60's.we will see partly clearin. overall it will be cool here. heating up inland. looking up a gradual cooling trend into next week. if you look at the forecast highs for sunday, notice the pinks. inland valleys in the mid-90's with 70's at bayshore. 70 towards danville. as we look at monday notice the changes are subtle. looking at the 90's inland and the cooler weather around the bay. the breeze gets a little faster into the week ahead. if we take the entire week and look at it in the inland valleys, you see the cooling trend towards about tuesday and wednesday.

this will be around danville, concord, livermore. about 10 degrees, eight degrees above average for some. the numbers slowly trail off with a better onshore flow and more of the sea breeze. that is what will come for the week ahead. today does about the warmth with temperatures warming up quickly. 95 at concord. 86 at san jose. upper 80's, san rafael. the sea breeze keeping it near perfect in san francisco. tomorrow low clouds and fog back to start the day with 50's and maybe some drizzle. upper 50's by 10:00. the sun comes out and fantastic weather for aids walk. a little breezy. today the warmest day. 80's and 90's bayside and inland. slightly cooler tomorrow but the heat will hold off for a few days inland. then we will see temperatures getting a little bit cooler. the upper elevations with people biking and hiking and barbecuing, be careful.

if you head towards the coast -- away from the coast, 65 at san jose. you can see the sunshine from the shark tank. 60's at santa rosa and upper 60's throughout the delta and the, valleys. we are well into the 70's inland. we still have some fog at the coast. pulling away in parts of the north bay. mid and upper 80's and 90's in the inland valleys throughout the afternoon. 5:00 and we are holding onto the warmth in the east bay with 70's. the fog comes back and a plate and will be here for the aids walk. we will detail that forecast in a week ahead coming up stop stephanie: thank you. developing news at the san francisco airport. the international terminal is now reopened after a bomb threat forced thousands of passengers to evacuate, prompting delays. a look from the sfo camera. san francisco police have cleared several areas of concern. an officer -- and officers have removed suspicious packages. this started about 8:15 last night.

individuals between the ages of 10 to 14 and 25 to 34. the number of deaths in california nationally was over 4000. zach: a lot of work and more than $20 million in state funding has gone into shortening it. the money is to equip the call centers who are expecting increasing calls to come through. >> for decades they have and 13 call centers in the state. zach: it includes call centers,. the ceo says she had concerns last year the center was being overwhelmed when the number went live. months later, with more funds invested she says she feels more confident but ads there's always room for more. >> has 988 goes live in the numbers turnover, that there's enough volunteers and trained and paid staff to answer the need. zach: it's not only a new resource for the community but also a sign of hope. >> it sends a big message this

happens to a lot of people and there is help available. zach: zach fuentes, abc 7 news. stephanie: if you or someone you know was having suicidal thoughts, there is help available now. some groups let you reach them by text message. you will find a list of local resources on abc7news.com/take action. mccracken continues on retail theft operations in san francisco. police seized nearly $200,000 worth of stolen goods from one man's apartment this week. police say this individuals plan months in advance on how to steal, where to resell and at what price. many cases are going under the radar. how can you tell what you are buying online? it was a bust surprised many. a san francisco meant able to steal, stock and resell $200,000 worth of stolen goods in his apartment. police say there are many other operations like it across the bay area. >> this one arrest from

wednesday could result in opening cases on several other open investigations and lead to more arrests. stephanie: police sergeant says there is a noticeable spike in these fencing operations in the midmarket area. how do they really work? he says they often start small, involving middlemen, people who try to offload stolen items as fast as possible. >> they are selling hundreds of thousands of dollars of goods online nationally. stephanie: according to the senate judiciary committee there is more than $500 billion worth of stolen and counterfeit items sold online worldwide each year. in some cases it is the online retailers tipping off investigators. lieutenant scott ryan says ebay contacted them about wednesday's suspect. >> there was no crazy undercover process to it. we followed up with what

they saw and took steps of working with everybody to identify who he was. stephanie: state senator nancy skinner introduced a bill that puts more responsibility on the online marketplace, tightening requirements for sellers. >> the marketplace has to get information like a business license, the receipt of goods, those kind of things to prove they are the owners of these goods in a legitimate way and have not been stolen. stephanie: investigators say these crime rings operate on everyday sites we use like ebay, craigslist and amazon. what should we look out for? we brought this to michael finney. >> is it a seller who is brand-new, never sold anything before? especially if it is an expensive purse or watch, something like that. or, if it is bulk. david is brand-new bulk, a whole case of aspirin, where did they come up with a case of aspirin?

if it doesn't pass the smell test. stephanie: that smell test is important. another tip from michael. if you buy an item that is stolen, you could be subject to legal prosecution. while that is unlikely if you bought the still that item unknowingly, it's important to remember league lead not yours. as for senator skinner's legislation, it will help protect both consumers and retailers if it passes. it's moving to the assembly as it's already past the senate. tuesday night's mega millions jackpot hasit is one of the topt jackpots in mega millions history. that's afteatched all six numbers in last night's $480 million drawing. the numbers were 8, 20 ,56, 63 and 64. the odds of matching all six numbers are one in more than 302

stephanie: two tigers with ties to joe exotic are getting a new forever home at the oakland zoo. lola and mia were rescued from a tourist attraction in oklahoma. a concerned citizen contacted the oakland zoo sank the tigers were underfed and lived in small, filthy cages. they traveled thousands of miles and found deformities on both tigers. >> the thing with neglected animals is we have no history on them. we don't know their age. they probably have never received any veterinary care, never any preventative care like

vaccinations or blood tests to check kidney health. stephanie: after treatment they will live in the zoo's newly remodeled tiger exhibit. they can be seen by the public in the upcoming months. a tortoise sanctuary is reaching out for help after a wildfire burn through its property in shasta county. >> rocky. you survived the fire, buddy. your pen does not look so good. stephanie: you see rocky and owner kate hoffman says tortoise acres rescue and sanctuary is one of the largest in the country. it was just hit hard by the peter fired in the town of anderson. hoffman says some of her 80 plus turtles were burned. others are now missing. you can see some of them coated in fire retardant. she is hoping for donations to'a cruz now.

cool even the temperatures climb to the upper 60's. you will get the sea breeze. the fog right along the shoreline here. we go in closer. scattered out of the east bay but as we go in closer you can see from the golden gate bridge up through southern marin and out through daly city, sfo looking at signees guys now. we are certainly in the fog here with upper 50's downtown. 60 at oakland. palo alto, 63. it has been sunny in san jose and santa clara. half moon bay partly cloudy for you. the shark tank, a warmer day into the 80's in the south bay. 59 at petaluma. upper 50's through napa. upper 60's in the inland valleys. the delta breeze backing off allowing for a quicker warm up. already in the upper elevations. mid-80's from mount diablo and mount tam. relative humidity in the single digits. below the inversion we are getting some warming.

two degrees warmer than the inland valleys. with that fog this morning it is cooler in parts of the north bay. looking at the coastal fog and drizzle, heating up inland. gradual cooling as we get into the next week. in the south bay today lots of 80's. you go further south and it is 90's. morgan hill and gilroy today. autiful day in santa cruz on the peninsula. low 60's with the fog from half moon bay, pacifica. we look at that clearing away from the coast. nice afternoon. some low 80's down towards redwood city. the sea breeze allowing for temperatures to not get too hot while the sunset will stay in the clouds in the 60's. a warm day. look at cloverdale. 100 degrees. calistoga, upper 90's. wine country, a warm day today with temperatures well into the 90's. on the east bay you are setting in temperatures up about six from yesterday's reading.

80 at union city. you had inland. as much as five to 10 degrees warmer today. here is where the heat will be today. it will hold on into sunday. 95 at concord. pleasanton, no 90's. livermore in the mid-90's. tomorrow morning it is cloudy and gray. if you're joining us for a swap tomorrow, 8:00, it will be foggy and maybe a little drizzle. by se subtle changes with a couple degrees shaved off your afternoon highs inland and around the bay. the coast stays consistent. the threes stays consistent for the week. in the middle of the week temperatures comfortable with no extremes. kind of the way we like it. stephanie: no complaints. thank you. inflation and other issues continue to be a worry for the broader economy.

tourism is proving to be a bright spot for the city of san francisco. numbers have been steadily rising for months and have seen a dramatic surge since the start of summer. tim johns tell us why it's having a positive impact on your wallet. tim: cadre pandemic break, they are back. everywhere from down the street to high above the city skyline. as inflation and other issues caused worries, tourism was a bright spot for san francisco. >> most specifically small business. tim: for lisa rodriguez, she says the past several months the number of visitors has exploded. that means support for thousands of jobs around the bay area and more money going towards the city's general budget. >> they are coming to businesses, frequenting shops and restaurants, big hotels. tim: the uptick has been notable at local hilton properties.
