we begin with developing news. the officer was wounded when can try to pull over a vehicle in downtown mountain view. the gunmen drove off, crashing in a nearby neighborhood. he ran and has been wanted ever since. abc7news reporter on's or how some spoke with neighbors who describe the terrifying >> atted has been involved in an officer-involved shooting. there officer was shot. >> dispatch recording to be on the lookout for a suspect moments after the shooting. police say the shooting unfolded within seconds. >> upon seconds of getting out of his patrol vehicle, the driver opened fire. >> katie nelson is a spokesperson for the police department. she said shortly after midnight, the officer initiated a traffic

stop, took a bullet to the body, and was treated at the hospital and has since been released. >> i don't think any officer expects to encounter like what our officer did last night. >> the suspect drove off. he crashed his suv a few blocks away and fled on foot. >> we are staying inside. >> the suspect crashed into this man's daughter car and ended up on the driveway a few blocks from town. many of the residents didn't want to give their names or show their face, fearing retaliation. they say police closed their streets and told them to stay inside as officers investigated for seven hours. >> there were around five or seven police cars around here, and i believe there were two over here. they were looking for someone. they were carrying big guns. >> nelson says they have a possible lead on the suspect but

won't give a description. she said the department was thankful the officer was not seriously injured and others were not hurt. >> people are always downtown, so who knows what could have happened if the suspect continued to open fire? we are very grateful that this did not turn into something tragic. dion: one man is dead and a woman wounded following a shooting in vallejo. it happened just before 10:00 last night where police say a 57-year-old on the house to man in vallejo died. a second person identified as a 46-year-old woman was injured. the family of alexis gabe recovered new evidence today. gabe disappeared at the end of january, and these are believed to be the last known images of her.

she was last seen leaving the antioch home of her former boyfriend marshall jones. volunteers recovered ladies underwear and a camera as they searched the area where her iphone screen protector was found. >> it's very important because it will give us a lot of clues. we can check text, emails. she has thousands of pictures on that phone. dion: jones was killed by law enforcement in june when police moved into a restroom at the seattle suburb and charged at them with a knife. crews have scoured pioneer in the sierra foothills based on notes investigators say were written by jones. airport operations are back to normal at sfo after a bomb scare led to the shutdown of the international terminal. police say a possibly incendiary device was discovered after 8:00 last night.

thousands of people had to evacuate the terminal. many of them lit up social media with photos and videos about the incident. officers removed multiple suspicious packages and spent more than an hour searching the terminal before getting the all clear. >> i cannot specify the number, but there were multiple packages and multiple locations were searched in relation to this poem threat -- bomb threat. dion: travelers were let in at midnight. officers did detain one person last night. happening now, crusade they are making good progress on the marsh fire in pittsburgh. here is a look at the smoky conditions. smoke has caused an air advisory through monday. the fire has been burning in peat, decomposing wetland

vegetation, and that could continue to burn for months. a fire burning in yosemite national park's 37% contained. flames scorched more than 4800 acres. the highway 41 entrance remains closed tonight. a fire has also crossed into the sierra national forest, prompting more road closures. no giant sequoias have burned. investigators say it appears to have been started by a person. our ongoing commitment to building a better bay area focuses on the topic of health. a nationwide upswing in covid cases has one california county on the verge of a mask mandate. morgan norwood says it is fueling efforts to get a second booster to all americans. morgan: as the subvariant

continues to spread, the fda and cdc is considering widening eligibility for a second booster for all adults. protection against omicron variants increase with each booster shot. >> the good news is vaccinated and boosted people, particularly those in the full component of the boosting, are generally pretty well protected. morgan: the half million americans who are eligible for a second booster shot have not gotten one. >> it's very clear in my mind that the risk of ending up in the icu is dramatically higher if you have not gotten that third shot. > for children under five, only 400,000 have received their third shot. overall, about 71 million americans remain unvaccinated, about 20% of the population.

every region of the country is seeing a rise in hospitalizations, and in the past week, 2500 people have died. los angeles county is on course to reinstate indoor mask mandates by the end of july. >> this variant, as everybody has noted, highly infectious. >> nationwide, more than half of the population is in those orange high risk counties where the cdc says you should mask indoors. they say you should consider masking based on your individual risk. dion: speaking of masks, starting monday, you will no longer have to wear one while riding part. it will lift its mask requirement for the second time in three months. officials say they could reinstate it if the uptick in cases continues. in april, all federal, state and

russia for its attack on ukraine. among the cries of terrorism, the protesters point to russia's use of missiles on civilian targets that were designed to take out aircraft carriers. current estimates put civilian deaths in ukraine at nearly 5000 people. in the east bay, volunteers spent the day at multiple richmond schools cleaning up the damage caused by vandals. at least four schools were damaged in the last few weeks. the damage includes broken furniture, appliances and computers. today, about 20 volunteers cleaned up those classrooms. >> it's disheartening for the community. the thing is with the kids, the kids need to be in a clean learning environment, so our goal was to make sure we could come in and get the school as clean and ready for the school year so we could have a nice learning environment. dion: lincoln elementary, greenwood academy and bayview elementary have all been hit.
