out on the massacre at robb elementary and new fallout this morning. first on abc news, amazon under investigation. why the feds are inspecting warehouses in several major cities. and from washington, the new witnesses coming forward in the january 6th investigation. later, one major league player not used to the heat at the home run derby. and the rankings just out, the states with the best food in america. number one may surprise you. good tuesday morning, everyone. i'm mona kosar abdi. >> and i'm christie ileto in for andrew. we begin with the dangerous weather across much of the country from dallas and denver to kansas city and minnesota. >> with the heat and humidity it could feel like 115 degrees in many areas of the u.s. today and the actual temperature in dallas could hit an all-time record of 110. historic heat is also baking much of europe. >> the conditions are straining

the power grid making drought conditions even worse hurting farmers and also raising more questions about the impact of climate change. this morning, an already historic heat wave is expanding. 60 million people across the u.s. are expected to face temperatures of 100 degrees or higher in the coming days. >> we've never put out a ten-day forecast quite like this. >> in texas the ten-day forecast at our houston station shows triple digits across the board for the first time ever. >> triple-digit heat looks like it's going nowhere in the foreseeable future. >> reporter: much of texas has seen no measurable rain for weeks. residents now being asked to conserve electricity and water. >> we're experiencing a stress on our system because of peak demands with peak weather conditions. >> and it's not just the u.s. extreme heat is blamed for more than 1,100 deaths in western europe where most homes have no ac.

england could hit 104 degrees today, which would be the highest temperature on record. in spain, portugal and greece, wildfires are forcing evacuations. this train was surrounded by a fire in spain. passengers watching as they passed through the flames. >> there's a big problem right in front of our nose. >> reporter: the extreme conditions here in the u.s. also fueling wildfires. this grass fire quickly spread near fort worth destroying multiple homes. >> the one good thing they got going for them is it's pretty much endless supply of water right next to these flames. >> reporter: and as grass and water become sparse, cattle ranchers from kansas to texas are selling off livestock. experts say that could eventually drive up beef prices because the ranchers' herds are getting smaller. the heat taking a toll on other outside workers like this as well like this u.p.s. driver in arizona collapsing at a customer's front door in 110-degree heat. u.p.s. says he's okay. and now a heat wave is moving into the northeast still drying

out from severe storms yesterday, which stranded these cars underwater in new jersey. meanwhile, in new york city a massive sinkhole swallowing this van. and we'll take a closer look at your forecast in just a few minutes. as more questions are raised about climate change, a new report finds a troubling trend in the atlantic ocean. researchers say up to 90% of plankton in the atlantic have been wiped out. they say the biggest culprit is chemical pollution, but warmer temperatures also play a role. plankton is the main food source for dolphins, whales and other marine life. new details are emerging about the suspect in sunday's mass shooting at a mall near indianapolis. inigors say the 20-year-old killed three people and wounded two others. police say they found his phone in a mall toilet. his laptop was found at his home inside the heated oven with a can of butane. they say he recently received an eviction notice, but the motive remains unclear. the man police call a good samaritan with a gun has been identified as 22-year-old

elisjsha dicken who was legally armed. they say he shot and killed the suspect within two minutes of the rampage beginning. to the children and parents of the uvalde, texas, shooting voicing outrage last night. furious after an investigation found nearly 400 officers responded to the shooting massacre at robb elementary despite the huge response. the officers waited more than 70 minutes to take down the shooter. many questions linger including why they waited so long. abc's derricke dennis reports. frustration is only growing. >> do right by our kids, not by your friends. >> reporter: outrage in uvalde just one day after a scathing report found multiple failures in the response to the shooting at robb elementary. those in attendance saying they will not be silenced. >> last time you had us on a time limit. that's not going to fly today. >> reporter: furious parents confronting the school board some demanding all board members

but parenttrust is already shattered. seri ofcers to ur current staff.t enf neean house. >> reporter: some parents say they don't want to send their kids back to school, and those sentiments were echoed by their children. >> i don't want to go to your guys' school if you don't have protection. >> you know what, your schools, they suck. they're not secure, and we're not sending our kids back. >> reporter: as for the investigation into the police response to the school massacre, the texas department of public safety says it's launching an internal investigation of all of its personnel who responded to robb elementary. derricke dennis, abc news, new york. >> derricke, thank you. new information overnight from the committee investigating the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. we're now learning about a time line for the committee to wrap up its work and release its findings, and this week, two more witnesses are coming forward. abc's em nguyen is here with the

latest details. em, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. thursday's hearing will focus on what former president donald trump was doing for the 187 minutes during the capitol riot, and now we know which former white house aides will be testifying thursday. this m, new insighin rimetime hearing. the committee will hear from former deputy white house press secretary sarah matthews, along with matthew pottinger, a member of the national security council during the trump administration. both matthews and pottinger resigned just hours after the capitol riot. in a previous hearing, the committee played video testimony from pottinger saying he decided to resign after trump tweeted that former vice president mike pence should have more courage. >> that's where i knew that i was leaving that day once i read that tweet. >> reporter: on social media matthews called january 6th one of the darkest days in american history adding, make no mistake, the events on the 6th were a

coup attempt. the time line of the committee's investigation is becoming clearer this morning. chairman bennie thompson now revealing the committee will release an interim report about its findings in september before the midterm elections with a final report and hearing by the end of the year. >> feeling good today? >> reporter: meanwhile, jury selection resumes today at the trial of steve bannon, the former trump strategist facing criminal charges for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the committee. if convicted, he faces up to two years in prison. >> it's nothing but a show trial. it's time they start having other witnesses then give other testimony other than what they've been putting up. >> reporter: chairman bennie thompson also said the january 6th house select committee has not decided whether to officially ask trump or former vice president mike pence to testify. mona. >> em, thank you. new york is stepping up efforts to keep swimmers safe from sharks. a string of recent attacks off long island has prompted officials to increase a

lifeguard staffing by 25%. they're also deploying more drones and helicopters to track the sharks. meanwhile, in southern california, a shark sighting yesterday forced the closure of about a two-mile stretch of huntington beach. >> all right, time now for a look at your thursday weather. good morning. a hot summer in texas is about to get even hotter. we've got 110 in the forecast for dallas today. 109 in lubbock. these numbers will be close to record levels, and this heat wave is expanding into the plains, into the interior west. below normal rainfall, negative agricultural impacts, added stress on livestock, we got a lot of problems out there in the west. meantime, dangerous winds in the northern plains will cause high-profile vehicles to have issues on the roadways. be careful out there. i'm accuweather meteorologist kevin coskren. coming up, the federal investigation into conditions at amazon warehouses.

back with a remarkable plane crash in east africa made even more incredible that anyone on board survived. the twin engine plane flipped over while landing in somalia's capital and caught fire. amazon is facing a federal investigation stemming from complaints about poor working conditions. prosecutors are inspecting amazon warehouses across the country, beginning with low kagtss outside new york, chicago and orlando.

at issue, the grueling pace of work. one employee said she was on her feet so long her leg was swelling. the company is accused of hiding worker injuries. amazon has not commented on the investigation. the fbi has joined the case of a major jewelry heist in california, but there's still no information being released about potential suspects. here's the latest. >> reporter: this morning a growing mystery in california. what happened to millions of dollars in jewels, gems and other valuables on their way to a jewelry show near l.a.? >> it's super tragic. >> reporter: the heist fit for a hollywood movie on july 11th when a brinks tractor-trailer heading south from an exhibit near san francisco was ronald after the driver stopped at a highway gas station rest area. >> to have a robbery like that possibly upwards of $150 million

in lawsuits is incredible. >> reporter: there is conflicting information about the value of the goods. some estimating the losses between $100 and $150 million. brinks saying the value listed by the customers was under $10 million. experts say there is a reason for the discrepancy. >> they underinsure. the extra insurance is very, very expensive. >> reporter: the show's president says the train was carrying thousands of diamonds, rare gems and about 100 rolex watches inside lockers that each weigh about 100 pounds. >> most of the certified diamonds do have serial numbers engraved in the stones. you would need a microscope to read it. all the cartier watches all have serial numbers. a lot of this is trackable. >> reporter: some of the exhibitors say their life savings is on the line if these jewels aren't found. the brinks' driver and crew are said to be cooperating with

now back with video of a car slamming into this home in los angeles. police say the driver somehow lost control and careened into a fence wall making the turn. fortunately no one was in the house at the time. the driver suffered minor injuries. we turn to the pilot making history with the blue angels. lieutenant amanda lee from minnesota will be flying high with the blue angels. she's the first female faa 18 demonstration pilot chosen to fly with the u.s. navy's elite group. >> i come into the ready room right now. i'm a pilot first, a person second, and my gender isn't really an issue. >> reporter: the selection process is rigorous, according to the captain, who spoke on the phone to our station in pensacola, florida. >> the level of trust that goes into all aspects of the job is
