4:00 pm
picture of himself today today. he called congressional members and those in his senior staff and will continue to work from his residence an average of 126,000. people are testing positive each day in just the last week the united states recorded more than 800 80,000 new covid cases and that numbers thought to be much higher because of home tests going unreported. the cdc says the va-5 omicron subariant now makes up. most 80% of those new cases and nearly 6200 covid positive americans are entering the hospital each day. that is up by 42% in the last month a main question now is how long we will have to keep living with high transmissibility and the emergence of new variants abc 7 news reporter. zach fuentes has more on how experts think covid could play out in the coming months. the world is continuing to see impacts from a wave of covid that's lasted longer than anyone
4:01 pm
would like santa clara county deputy health officer, dr. george. hahn says locally. we've been in this new wave since may and at this point there doesn't seem to be an end in sight previous waves have been relatively quick they come, you know, lots of people get covid and then after a month or two, you know cases start to settle down again. we have not seen that this time dr. han says even though at home tests are not included in the counties official. base counts sewer shed data is showing that covid is so prevalent in the local community that there's still lots of code out there. in fact, there's probably as much covid as we've ever seen still doctors. say the number of safety measures that are disposal has kept this way from being as deadly as others at thursday's press briefing on the president's covid diagnosis emphasis was placed on his fully vac status and taking the antiviral pill pax levid. these are incredibly important things for the president to have they're incredibly important things for every right now there is still no universal mask mandate in most places including the bay area dr. han couldn't
4:02 pm
weigh in on whether we will see a return of mask mandates, but did double down on the fact that proper masking indoors is still a key safety tool? okay and 95 a kf94 or an n95 that actually will protect you from getting covid as for how much longer he sees this wave sticking around and how kids are turning to school will affect the number of bay area cases, dr. hans says it's difficult to predict. what i can say, is that most experts expect some kind of way to occur is fall or winter. the timing is still uncertain, but what we can say is for sure get as many vaccines and boosters as you're eligible for and then, you know, continuing your high quality mask indoors zach fuentes abc 7 news. joining me now is abc 7 news contributor dr. alok patel doc has always. thanks for the time. so let's start with president biden and first of all, his age age 79. i mean, we know he's gonna get the very best medical care
4:03 pm
possible. but what are your concerns when when you have an older patient? well, simply put larry older patient is more likely to get severely ill wind up in the hospital and we know that that risk is going to be dramatically reduced president biden given his vaccination status his booster status and the fact that he is on paxilvid and has access to world-class healthcare, but i'm also worried about long covid in him as well long covid in anyone out there. so we're gonna be paying a close eye to how he does over the next week. all right covid cases. obviously been going up dramatically you got school about to start in a few weeks. what are you telling? parents and in your practice in particular simply put get vaccinated get vaccinated make sure your kids are vaccinated and doing that now because it takes time to build up that immunity and you want to be set to go before it's school starts and roughly the middle to the end of august and parents as tough as this is to say expect your child to run into ba5 given how incredibly transmissible it is. so you went ahead is your best and do what you can to protect your kids. i mentioned vaccination three times, but also wearing a mask
4:04 pm
and making sure your children stay home if they have any symptoms. you're not infecting others. are you mention? asks, they are not required in schools. should they be required? this is a tough one there because i personally do not see a mandate coming back right now. this could obviously change if we see an increase in hospitalizations, but i think it's important that we focus on the message that masks that we just heard and 95's can 95's kf94. it's worked incredibly well in older kids, especially those kids in high school should be encouraged to wear them while we have so much transmission without the school year in session. so no one can really predict what's gonna happen in fall. this is a different story for those younger kids who may not be be able to tolerate this but motel larry, i want to just circle back to president biden and one item that you mentioned in particular about pax levid because you see some reports out there where people are getting rebound infections after taking pax levid. what do we know about that clinically? you know, we're looking at different pre-print studies and the estimates of summer routine
4:05 pm
two to ten percent. it's really hard to say larry, but what is important to note? is that even in the current wave right now variance that packs of it was not tested against it is still by and large keeping people out of a hospital. it's doing its job. and so that's why i mentioned that it's gonna be critical to watch how president biden does over the next seven days because remember what dr. fauci he tested negative then tested positive and was given a second chorus a paxil it is so is is possible that president biden just needs one. is it possible the extend his course? does he test negative then test positive? no one really knows for sure. but i hope that they continue the transparent communication. yeah, obviously everybody will be watching and we appreciate your time dr. patel. thanks. hives and rashes or some of the symptoms infectious disease is specialists are getting calls about after people test negative for covid abc 7 news reporter loose pena spoke to experts including allergist who explained when you should be concerned. they may start on your knees or arms and move around your body. these are the type of hives
4:06 pm
stamford infectious diseases dr. and lou is seen after covid infection. we got a lot of calls about hives so, you know specifically these wells that look like really big mosquito bites. after people have had covid dr. lou says these hives or rashes shouldn't be interpreted as allergies the immune system getting stimulated by the virus dr. robert durano with the allergy and asthma associates of northern california is noticing similar skin reactions during the recovery phase of infection. he says this happens with covid but also other viruses once the immune system has ramped up in this fighting the infection that they start having outbreaks of of hives they come and go they'll pop up here then they'll pop up here dr. terano recommends to consult with a medical professional but says in many cases these hives can go away with over-the-counter medication if a patient takes a simple antihistamine like a benadryl or claritin or a leg or something like that over the
4:07 pm
counter often the hives will respond and fade away and tell them medication wears off according to cdc data rashes are part of the list of post-covid infection symptoms. why is after people test negative they start getting these rashes sometimes when people still actively infected. a lot of times after the infection is clearing and that's partially probably because it's the immune system that's still revved up and and the immune system is clearing the virus and as it's doing that you can get misfiring within the immune system a resulting in rashes like this doctor torano says that many cases these rashes can way after two hours, but in some cases may last several weeks up to six weeks is considered acute hives or short-term hives over six weeks is considered long-term hives in san jose loose pena abc 7 news. san francisco supervisor rafael mandelman has criticized the federal government's response to

4:14 pm
saw the fencing i just assumed maybe it was being cleared out for an event, but that's not the case. it's being clear to try and clean up the area which has become overrun by a legal vendors amid the pandemic it's gone from immigrant vendor selling their artists and goods to a huge market of stolen goods supervisor hillary ronan introducing legislation in march requiring. errors to have a permit allowing the city to clamp down on those selling illegally, but the process has been delayed. the law isn't going to be fully enforced into august after the whole online permanent system is set up that we felt like we just need a change of atmosphere at the 24th street bar. and this fencing is being described as a last resort a way of keeping the vendors and the public safe by no means is it meant to be a permanent solution susanna rojas is the executive director of the calivante quattro latino cultural district

non-profits working with the city to try and make it a safer place. how do you think this fencing off is going to help and impact these these businesses? i think as you can see here, it's it just that people that have been bending on the street. they're already organized that we they're permitted. so it just makes it easier to be able to see who are vendors who are already registered and permitted vendors like sophia already have their seller permit the next step will be a vendor permit from the city. always is too much. people know no bueno. and the difficult for for everybody the sale here. i love this fence. i love it. but because it's more safe milagros lopez has been selling her jewelry here for eight years and says the past two she hasn't felt safe a lot of illegal vendors comes inside. i'm sorry to mention but homeless people living in there they do in drugs the hope is

4:20 pm
not seen anything that says we'll get any thunderstorms, which is good dry thunderstorms. that is all right. so, all right temperatures you can see in brentwood and that's why they're like, please send us some of this weather same thing in concord. are feeling a little bit in san ramon at 83, but then you go over the livermore. it's 92. it's 94 right now in san martin. they're like bring some of that cooler air down from san jose where it's 79 or even from oakland at 66 73 in napa right now, but 88, nevada we have that same setup where the breezes in napa coming off the san pablo bay are significantly cooler. windsor is gusting this high 30 miles per hour. they could make it up to 35. you can see it right along the embarcadero just like clockwork kicking in temperatures will drop from the 50s. 870s and 80s at 7 o'clock down into the 50s and 60s with increasing clouds by ten o'clock drop monitors came out no change whatsoever. and that means we're still pretty much here in the bay area stuck under the severe category. however, we are still seeing the total capacity of our reservoirs
4:21 pm
dropping even significantly three to four percent since last month area of low pressure is going to take over and what that means is it's kicking that hot high away a little bit. so tonight we'll see increasing clouds in moisture. 9 in santa rosa the 65 in antioch most of us in the 50s. look at these refreshing upper 70s to near 80 in the south bay 67 at millbrae mid-dupper seventies for the rest of the peninsula near 60 ride along the coast with cloud cover and breezy conditions low 60s actually a little bit cooler than average in san francisco at 62. we'll have 79 and petaluma to about 85 in santa rosa at your spread in the north bay. so comfortable to a little bit warm 68 breezy and berkeley 70s for the rest of the east bay and will still on to some 90s low to mid 90s and fairfield pittsburgh antioch and brentwood, but look at this. i'm contrast that seabreeze making it to san ramon and it's only about 80 degrees my accuweather 7-day forecast will do the same thing again saturday now, we'll bump up temperatures a little bit away from the coast sun. they've been nothing extreme and
4:22 pm
then we'll return back to average monday. watch out for increasing high clouds. that's that monsoon moisture and temperatures, maybe a degree or two warmer than average wednesday thursday. nothing really ext. kristen all right. thank you. mike monarch. butterflies are drifting closer to extinction scientists have put the iconic orange and black insect on the endangered list because of its past dwindling numbers the butterflies western population has declined 99.9% between the 1980s and 2021 the biggest threats to the species now are habitat destruction and climate change. so pretty the start of a new school year just around the corner one district is bonuses will lure in teaching applicants. plus southern california land taken away from a black family nearly a hundred years ago is now back in the hands of its rightful owner.

ago, but it represents a bold step right direction bruce's beach three acres of prime real estate in manhattan beach is now back with its rightful owner descendants of willa and charles bruce who bought the land back in 1912 that was going to everything i could to get it back at the time the bruce's built a resort on the land which became a respite for families, but they faced relentless racism and harassment by white neighbors and the ku klux klan still they refused to leave until 1924 when the city of manhattan beach sees the property from them through eminent domain. it's that empty for decades until the city built a park the county and state eventually took it over but now through the persistence of the bruce family and local leaders. it is my honor to be here to present a certified copy to the family. the deed is back in the family's hands. thank you so much. the bruce is faced legal challenges.
