learn how abbvie and ironwood moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news with homicides that evidence never goes away. you know, this is this is something keep forever evidence technology time combined have cracked several bay area cold cases. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm on a date. so 76 year old man is now under arrest linked by dna to a slew of violent crimes dating back more than 40 years. the first case was a homicide a woman killed in union city in 1980, then another murder in vallejo in 1996, then last year a sex crime. it was that investigation which revealed the suspect in three cases after more than 40 years abc 70's reporter tim johns found out this isn't over.

fairfield resident samantha siders is still shaken for several hours on tuesday. her neighborhood was thrown into chaos after police surrounded the house of one of her neighbors. they just came and swarms. there was like trucks sheriffs. they were in full suits and it was very scary. they were there for this man. seventy six year old james gary gary was arrested for homicide and booked into solano county jail. this is a family household and have a lot of children and they frequently play in the neighborhood and wave at this man, but it's just gary's arrests that bother ciders but also the extent of what he's alleged to have done. thanks to dna evidence compiled over a series of decades as well as modern technology several bay area and state law enforcement agencies have been able to link gary to unsolved murderers and other crimes going back more than 40 years forensic analysis dna analysis. all those things were, you know, very very premature at that time. they were in their infancy. the first murder, is that of a union city woman in her home in

80 the second is a woman whose body was found in some bushes besides interstate 780 in vallejo in 1996. finally gary is accused of a sex crime in solano county in 2021. who was this man in 1980 and who has he been since because with 16 years in between two different homicides are there other victims. so while police continue to piece together, what else might have happened they say a key focus has to be on the loved ones of the victims. in that for some all these years later, they might finally be able to get some peace. i believe there's probably a sense of relief and a sense of justice for those folks in solano county tim johns abc 7 news. breaking news a fire burning near the town of aromas in san benito county is now also burning in santa clara county the anzar fire has burned 120 acres and his 25% contained there are reports that one home and one garage have been

all right. thank you. sandia oakland police are searching for a man accused of trying to kidnap a two year old at a bus. stop take a look at surveillance photos from the ac transit platform at high street and international boulevard on tuesday family members told police the man threatened them and tried to take the toddler and assaulted the child's mother a good samaritan intervened and the man ran away if you recognize him call oakland police. more monkeypox cases in santa clara county so far it's been contracted primarily by gay men, but the county deputy. health officer says it may not be too long before we see heterosexual individuals coming down this illness as well. i do expect that there will be some cases at some point that in in folks who are not in lgbtq community. we just don't know when that will happen. the santa clara county now has 31 confirmed monkeypox cases that number has more than doubled since last week now.

surcharge on top of state taxes and environmental fees. the i-team stand noise has been investigating how and why californians always pay more at the pump than any other state. yes, we pay more gas tax than any other state 26 cents a gallon more than the national average and we pay more to refine our cleaner burning fuel about 10 cents a gallon those numbers for this week from uc berkeley's energy institute at haas and the lead economist there says hidden in the 219 per gallon for refining marketing and retailing is a mystery gas surcharge currently 70 cents a gallon that can't be explained. are you saying that they're charging more because they can absolutely i'm sure they're charging more because they can the question is are there actual costs behind it that are justifying it and that's something we have to look into severin bornstein says oil companies and retailers start at the mystery gas surcharge after the explosion and fire at the

exxon mobile refinery in torrance seven years ago. our prices went way up, which they always do after a refinery fire, but they never came down again. they should be given the higher taxes and fees. he provided this graph showing how oil companies have charged california drivers and extra $40 billion dollars compared to the rest of the country since the torrance explosion. there are people really hurting due to those higher gas prices and he testified last month at a state assembly hearing into possible price gouging. i mean, honestly, i find it. kind of unbelievable that we've gone this many years and we still haven't been able to figure the mystery out the attorney general's office testified that investigating the mystery gas surcharge will be difficult for them that kind of investigation would take several years before you would actually get an answer if you got an answer no answers for us on the short term the select committees planting a series of meetings over the next three or four months. so why i asked a representative

for the oil companies and refineries that do business in the west about the mystery guest surcharge marketers can charge whatever they want for gasoline. it's based on consumers consumers will pick the gas station. they want to go to they want the best fuel for their automobile. and as a single mom i can tell you i want to pick a place. that's well lit that's clean that i feel safe and i will pay more than any other surrounding gas station to make sure that me and my son are pulling up to a corner place that feels safe we need to willing to shop around because not only do you get a better price you put more pressure on those expensive stations, which are usually the big brands to lower their prices. the professor tells me despite some that their special additives improve your car's performance virtually. all gas is the same so shop it independence stations that charge less and that should drive down the price of all gasoline more quickly for the it dan noyes abc 7 news.

but certainly out west we do have some excessive heat warnings heat advisories and most of the central and southern parts of the states are dealing with that heat a live view from our exploratorium camera, and you can see the fog rolling in morning fog coaster bay with patchy drizzle breezy and cooler in the afternoon, and we're expecting minor ups and downs. through next week. so the air quality advisory for eastern contra costa county continues tonight due to the smoke from the march fire, but really overall things have been improving tonight. we have good air quality right around the contra costa county area. so i think they're making progress in dousing the flames there the fire that's has been burning since may fog first thing in the morning between five and eight. we are looking at some spotty drizzle tomorrow and then really a little bit of fog will linger in the afternoon your morning. is we'll start out anywhere from 48 in santa rosa to 65 and antioch. watch out for the fog tomorrow afternoon. it's warm inland, but not as hot as today in the low 90s for
