attacking the capitol. we heard testimony claiming trump made no calls to law enforcement or the military. >> also last night for the first time we heard dramatic audio from former vice president mike pence's security detail revealing how agents feared for their lives during the riot. >> abc's em nguyen gibegins our coverage from washington. good morning. >> reporter: the committee took us inside the white house during the capitol riot and revealed outtakes from a speech presidnt trump recorded hours later. this morning the committee investigating the january 6th attack revealing never-before-seen video of former president trump the day after the riot. playing outtakes from a speech he recorded. >> my only goal was to ensure the integrity of the vote. my only goal was to ensure the integrity of the vote. >> reporter: he was speaking about those who attacked the capitol but refused to say they broke the law. >> and if you broke the law -- i can't say that.

>> reporter: and he still resisted saying the election was over. >> the demonstrators who infiltrated the capitol have defied the seat of -- it's defiled, right? i can't see it very well. i'll do this. i'm going to do this. let's go. but this election is now over. congress has certified the results. i don't want to say the election's over. i just want to say congress has certified the results. without saying the election's over. okay? >> reporter: adviser ivanka up from is heard coaching her father in the background. >> but congress has certified. now congress has certified. >> i didn't say over. so let me see. go to the paragraph before. i would like to begin by addressing the heinous attack yesterday. yesterday is a hard word for me. >> just take it out. >> the heinous attack. >> good. >> reporter: also last night the committee further revealed the danger vice president mike pence faced on january 6th after trump tweeted calling him a coward for

helping to certify joe biden's election win. former white house aide sarah matthews testified that tweet from trump was like pouring gasoline on the fire. >> it was essentially him giving the green light to these people, telling them that what they were doing at the steps of the capitol and entering the capitol was okay, that they were justified in their anger. >> reporter: as the mob came within feet of the vice president's office, radio traffic from pence's security detail reveals just how worried secret service agents were about evacuating him from the capitol. >> if we lose only more time we may lose the ability to leave. so if we're going to leave we need to do it now. >> reporter: in video testimony an unnamed security official testified members of pence's security team, fearing for their lives, even asked for good-bye messages to be sent to their families. >> members of the vp detail at this time were starting to fear for their own lives.

there was a lot of yelling, a lot of -- a lot of very personal calls over the radio. so it was disturbing. i don't like talking about it. but there were calls to say good-bye to family members, so on and so forth. it was getting -- just for whatever the reason was on the ground, the vp detail thought that this was about to get very ugly. >> reporter: the committee also showed footage of missouri senator josh hawley running in the senate halls to escape from rioters. video that drew laughs in the hearing room. earlier that day hawley was seen raising his fist toward trump supporters. a capitol police officer testified hawley's gesture of support riled up the crowd. former president trump has released a statement calling his former aide sarah matthews a liar and criticizing mike pence. trump also denied that he privately took some responsibility for the riot.

mona? >> em, thank you. the committee says they will meet again in september. meanwhile, sources say a criminal investigation is now under way into text messages sent by the secret service before and during january 6th. the agency says the texts were deleted during a system upgrade despite requests from the january 6th committee to turn them over. a congressman running for governor of new york was attacked during a campaign event last night. republican lee zeldin was giving a speech near rochester when police say a man climbed onto the stage and tried to stab him in the neck with a pointed weapon. the 43-year-old suspect reportedly said "you're done." people in the audience were able to restrain him until police arrived. he's charged with felony attempted assault. zeldin fortunately was not hurt. there's no word on a motive for the attack but zeldin later tweeted "scores should be settled at the ballot box, not on stage at campaign events." now to president biden, isolating at the white house after testing positive for covid. he says he's doing great, but many questions surround the new

covid patient on pennsylvania avenue. >> i'm doing well. getting a lot of work done. >> reporter: recording this video from the white house. president joe biden says he's doing great and keeping busy as he recovers from covid. >> thanks for your concern, and keep the faith. it's going to be okay. >> reporter: the white house says biden tested positive yesterday after going to bed wednesday night feeling fine but not sleeping well. biden's physician did update the president's symptoms. in a statement writing, "he's experiencing runny nose and fatigue with an occasional dry cough." but it was dr. ashish jha, the white house coronavirus coordinator, who took questions from reporters. >> right now he feels really well. our expectation is that he's going to continue to have mild illness. and he's going to be monitored for symptoms. >> reporter: the president is receiving the anti-viral medication paxlovid. the 79-year-old is fully vaccinated and got two booster shots. contact tracing is under way for his close contacts, including members of congress.

senators warren and markey with the president wednesday have both tested negative, along with first lady jill biden. >> he's feeling good. i tested negative this morning. i am going to keep my schedule. i am, according to cdc guidelines, i am keeping masked. >> white house officials say they don't know where the president caught the virus, and we don't know which variant he may have. he's now isolating at the white house for at least five days. well, disappointed and angry, just some of the words from george floyd's family after a man who took part in his murder was sentenced thursday. former minneapolis police officer thomas lane received 2 1/2 years in prison for violating floyd's civil rights, far short of the 6 1/2 years that prosecutors requested. lane held floyd's legs as derek chauvin pinned him with his knee. and authorities in boston believe they know what caused this train fire yesterday. they say broken metal touched the third rail. smoke quickly spread through one

of the cars as the subway train sat on a bridge above the mystic river. some passengers were able to climb through the windows. but one woman jumped into the river, stunning her fellow passengers. >> it was a bigger drop than you would think. i hear a woman scream behind me. and she's just like, "no, no, don't jump." and then we look out into the river and there's this woman swimming around there. >> about 200 people were on board the train. some encouraging news from the war in ukraine. a deal to resume much-needed grain exports from ukraine is expected to be signed today. the deal was brokered by turkey. ukraine is one of the world's top food suppliers. but shipments have been blocked by russia. food supply shortages are one factor in a growing humanitarian crisis in east africa, and groups are bracing for a historic famine. they say nearly 400,000 children are at risk of dying without immediate care. climate change is another factor. well, the climate and pesticides are being blamed for

honeymoon. local police say christie chen was beaten to death in the couple's bungalow at a luxury resort. sources tell the "daily mail" that her husband, bradley dawson, escaped in a kayak in the middle of the night, paddling to a small island more than i amile away. abc news has not verified that report. dawson was arrested two days later. his bail hearing is monday. a tragic end to a pool party in israel. a sinkhole suddenly opened up in this back yard swimming pool and swallowed up two men. one man climbed his way out, but the other man was later found dead. emergency crews took hours to retrieve the body. a disturbing scene at a home near philadelphia. a man attacked by a snake. police getting the call, asked the dispatcher to repeat the information because it was so unusual. here's abc's andrea fujii. >> reporter: this morning a pennsylvania man is recovering after police say they were forced to kill his pet snake that was strangling him. >> 28-year-old male with a snake wrapped around his neck.

>> reporter: neighbors say the man had many pet snakes including this one in his mekunji township home where a family member found him unconscious and in cardiac arrest wednesday with a 15-foot snake on top of him. >> quite literally the officer looked into the room and the snake was looking up at him. >> reporter: officers say the snake's head was just far enough away where they could shoot it without injuring the man. >> the officers had to make a life or death decision. >> reporter: so they took the shot, and snake released its grip, slithering away, eventually dying. officers then pulled the man to safety. neighbors say they often see the man in his yard holding a snake. it's not clear how many he has in his home. officers now being praised for their quick thinking. >> one of the officers described it as a scene from a horror movie. and that's probably the most appropriate way to describe it. >> the man was alive when he was rushed to the hospital, where he was still recovering as of yesterday. it's not clear what type of snake it was or why it turned on

inside four children and their 18-year-old sister. he ran into the house finding three of the kids and the older teen on the second floor guiding them out asking if there was anyone left inside, and there was, 6-year-old kaylani. >> it was adrenaline. i high-tailed my butt into the house going around the side, up the patio. went to go downstairs, found kaylani in the smoke. continued upstairs, collapsed at the top stairs and then went to jump out the window but her leg got wrapped up around the curtain so i finished up busting the window out after i got her unwrapped then we jumped out. >> reporter: after jumping out, bostic is seen here handing off kaylani to a police officer before collapsing on the ground. >> i need oxygen. >> reporter: moments later he double-checks making sure she's okay. >> is the baby okay? please tell me that baby is okay.
