microphone. most people we spoke with said their concerns are about public safety and gun-control. kumasi: governor newsom has signed several laws aimed at improving gun safety in california. there are eight bills in total, including one allowing the victims of gun violence to sue gun manufacturers. another requires schools to report threats of homicidal acts to police and another law banning someone convicted of child abuse from having a gun for 10 years. reggie: a 76-year-old man is under arrest linked by dna to violent crimes dating back four decades. police say a crime last year and the north bay gave them a breakthrough in the cases. james gary was arrested this week. investigators say they have laid tim to three times. three murders in 1980 and 1996 and a sex crime last year and are now trying to figure out if there are more. >> who was this man in 1980 and

who has he been since? with 16 years in between two different homicides, are there other victims? kumasi: -- reggie: he is now facing homicide charges. kumasi: in the eastbound of family is asking for more help to find clues about her disappearance. police believe her ex-boyfriend killed her in january but her body has not been found. last weekend her family says they found new evidence an area where her phone screen protector had been discovered. they will be searching goes to other areas tomorrow and on sunday and are asking for volunteers to register for the facebook page. reggie: oakland police are looking for a man accused of trying to kidnap a two-year-old at a bus stop. these are surveillance videos from high street and international boulevard on tuesday. family members told police the

man threatened them and try to take the toddler and assaulted the child's mother. a good samaritan intervened and that man ran away. kumasi: new developments on the washburn fire. crews are continuing to make progress, which means the southern entrance to the park and reopen. the fire is now 50% contained and has been going since july 17. it has destroyed nearly 5000 acres. the containment of the fire, which was inching dangerously close to the mariposa grove, can allow the southern entrance of yosemite to open at 6:00 a.m. reggie: a fire has spread into santa clara county. the fire has burned 120 acres and is 25% contained. the reports is one home in one garage had been destroyed but so far no one has been hurt. 50 people are evacuated. kumasi: tonight is another big drawing for the mega millions jackpot.

the prize is at $660 million. nobody won the winning ticket earlier this week so the jackpot went up. ryan curry is live in fremont with more. ryan: good morning. someone's life could definitely be changed for the better if they win this whopping $660 million jackpot for that drawing later on this evening. the only questions we have is will that winter be happening tonight and will that winner be in the bay area? it is practically impossible to predict something like that, but we are eagerly awaiting to see who the winner will be. the jackpot has not been this high since april 15, which led to the jackpot getting higher and higher because no one has won it. back then we had 27 consecutive drawings and no winner. it started at 20 millions and

reggie: former ufc champion cain velasquez is appealing a judge's ruling to keep them in jail while he awaits trial for attempted murder. his lawyers argue he was unconstitutionally denied bail by a santa clara county judge. kane is charged with shooting a man that was charged with molesting his young son and injuring the man stepfather. in court documents the judge ruled releasing kane would prove too much of a list -- a risk to the victims and the public. you might be ready for your kids to go back to school, but are the schools ready? a lot are saying they do not have enough teachers. mount diablo has 50 teaching slots to fill. they are offering signing bonuses up to $10,000. we spoke with one teacher who was hired on the spot. she did not qualify for the bonus because she just left a teaching job in the same district. >> i resigned because of moving.

it would be a distance to travel. after a week of resigning i have to come back. i will drive, it is worth it. reggie: oakland unified is also having trouble hiring teachers. kumasi:kumasi: it is looking to fill 75 positions. the university of california is looking to expand. adding 20,000 student by 2030 by expanding online and summer programs and concentrating growth on specific campuses. one major hurdle is the system we need millions of dollars from the state to make this expansion happen. the oakland zoo is going straight to the voters in hopes of raising millions of dollars to support its operations. according to the chronicle, those who was in a bad financial situation because of the pandemic sodas putting a property tax measure on the november ballot. the 20 year tax would cost homeowners $68 a year and raised $12 billion a year for those who. low income households and
