7:09 am
he didn't call anybody who could help restore order. but it wasn't just inaction, who did he call? he called republican senators. he called rudy giuliani. he was still trying to overturn the election even as his supporters were rampaging through the capitol behind as adam kinzinger put it, this is not a president who failed to act, this is a president who chose not to act. >> the question, dan abrams, is it criminal action? >> right, and just to follow up on something jon said it's clear that his words mattered. but just as important is he continues to say the same things today. i mean, everything we heard about what donald trump has been saying about the stolen election and what the impact it had was, continues to be repeated to this day. so as a legal matter though, i don't think it got you any closer to a possible indictment of the president, meaning, if they were going to likely indict donald trump before this proceeding, that's going to move forward. if they were not, that didn't get you any closer. why? because i don't think it provided any more connection

7:12 am
to show that he's still able to fulfill his duties even though he's tested positive. today he'll be meeting with his economic team and senior advisers and the white house is also holding him up as an example, because he is fully vaccinated and double boosted, his risk of becoming seriously ill is drastically reduced. the president will now isolate for a full five day, that takes him through next tuesday, but the white house is also going beyond the cdc guidelines and says the president won't return here to the west wing until he has a negative antigen test and, amy, we both know that could take longer. >> it could. thank you for that. joining us now is the white house covid-19 response coordinator dr. ashish jha. dr. jha, thanks for being with us, so how did the president do overnight? how is he doing this morning? >> yeah, good morning. thanks for having me back. you know, i checked in with his team late last night. he was doing fine throughout the evening, have not had a chance to check in with folks this morning. i'm going to have a conversation with him directly myself this morning, but i can report that as of last night he was feeling

7:14 am
then put him on paxlovid? what's the explanation medically? >> yeah, it's a really good question actually. i think it's the right thing to do for anybody who is at elevated risk as defined by the cdc fda, which basically is anyone over the age of 50, or under 50 with chronic diseases. i actually think a broad swath of americans getting infected should be getting paxlovid. the president, of course, no exception. so i don't think that it's the mildness of the symptoms that should matter. i've actually been out here talking about the importance of people getting paxlovid. i think the president obviously qualified and i'm pleased to see that his personal physician made that choice. >> and it's certainly been reported some people are hesitant to take paxlovid even if they fit those requiremnts or they're 50 plus because of this paxlovid rebound that we know dr. fauci just recently experienced. >> yeah, two things about rebound. it's gotten a lot of attention. i think the key points on the rebound, pretty infrequent, we
7:15 am
think the best clinical data out there says maybe 5%, 8% of people end up getting a rebound so 90%, 95% of people don't, second, remember the goal of paxlovid, paxlovid was created to keep people from getting seriously ill. to keep people from getting into the hospital and what we know id do not end up getting into the hospital,do not end up having serious illness and it reduces risk of serious illness by 90% and that's why i think it's vey important for people to take it and that's why i was pleased to see his personal physician recommend it. >> dr. jha, we always appreciate your time today. thank you so much. >> thank you. >> michael. >> all right, amy, thank you. now to the deadly storms hitting the south overnight and the brutal heat searing much of the country with more than 80 million americans on alert for dangerously high temperatures. ginger is tracking it all for us. good morning, ginger. >> good morning to you, michael. it's nearly 80 degrees already here but we have to look at the map of what happened. more than 230 severe storm reports, many of them damaging

this morning, apps that can save you money. rebecca jarvis here to tell us how it's done. good morning, rebecca. let's start with groceries. >> yeah, so grocery prices over the last year are up 12%. a lot of people are already taking advantage of those in-store rewards program, coupons, that's great but you can get cash back on top of that using apps like ibotta. and if you take a look at the average monthly food budget it started the year at $443. today it's $472. that means you're spending $30 additional. however, if you incorporate ibotta whether shopping in-store or online, you can save yourself in cash back about $61. that means you're getting double inflation back in cash so you're actually legitimately beating inflation by using ibotta. >> that's pretty great. how about monthly bills and subscriptions? >> if you take a look at recurring expenses things like your phone bill, your internet bill, your cable bill, all of those things can be going up in price but you don't even know it
8:17 am
so using apps like truebill and trim, you can look at what you're paying for those subscriptions and the great thing with an app like trim, is that they will actually negotiate those bills lower for you. you pay them a small percentage of what you're saving and they negotiate them. they'll even do it for your medical bills and they'll help you with your credit cards, your bank statements and get those asriveeemi g pghnoyoishe awe. wi ara $4. a gallon, down about 50 cents over the last month but still higher than they were a year ago. the way to save there make sure you take advantage of the rewards programs at your local gas station. there's also apps like waze, aaa, gasbuddy, those can save you money and show you where the cheapest gas is in your area and help you save on your monthly bills. >> rebecca jarvis, thanks. our hair loss series examining why it happens and what we can do to stop it. dr. jen ashton has personal
