4:33 pm
unicef found when they're using the tracker of three vaccines diphtheria tetanus and pertussis looking at global rates, and they found that 20 about a 25 million children are not getting their first dose of this shot, which is two million more than last year 6 million more than 2019. so this this very slow, but insidious decline in getting children the coverage they need worldwide for childhood vaccines. now, there's multiple reasons out there. one of them is obviously covid-19 is disrupted a lot of supply chains. clear access issues. there's also children living in very fragile areas possibly some political turmoil, but that's also contributing as well dan. there's also misinformation out there. there's also a massive generation of young parents out there who don't see the the need to get these vaccines out there and just more work we need to do in terms of communication. i wonder how much of this could be traced to the negative reaction about the covid vaccine and the people who refuse to take that and now they're sort of a generalized a reluctance to get any vaccines. i'm sure that's part of it. you know, i haven't actually
4:34 pm
seen me being that really quantifies how much that's translating, but i do think a large part had to do with the disruption that a lot of parents saw from covid-19 and we've seen this decline in 2020 and 2021 of children not getting routine vaccinations for multitude of reasons and dan i do worry, you know this upcoming school year what is going to happen with things like the influenza shot now that there's parents out there who have less trust in the vaccine, but there was a recent study. this april was showed a and only one percent of three vaccines of children entering kindergarten now, you might say one percent from 95 to 94 percent. that's no big deal. that's a big deal for two reasons number one and that's 35,000 children entering kindergarten who are not getting protected. that's also getting closer to below 90% which is actually heard immunity for a lot of those diseases of childhood such as mumps measles rubella. so that's a keith threshold to talk about a what about you know, we just reported the other day about the first new case of in the us since something like

4:36 pm
what is being done to get these children protected and make sure we are at the very least above that 90% threshold you just talked about then it comes down to communication which communication is building trust talking very clearly with parents guardians anyone out there about the need to continue to vaccinate children and it also comes down to access making sure people have access to getting those vaccinations. they have insurance. they have a clinic that they can go to and i will tell you i have a lot of parents respectfully will ask me like dr. patel. why do we need these vaccines? we don't see these diseases anymore. well, you don't see them because vaccines work. that is why i don't see cases of diphtheria, tetanus measles mumps. rubella pneumococcal meningitis. yeah, i could go on i don't see cases of these anymore because of vaccines. all right goodness, right abc 7 news contributor dr. alok patel a look. thank you. dan happy friday youtube a record-breaking real estate deal the condo that went for big bucks and it's famous previous owner the fort for his ne
