>>haf t wee following th m starting with that dangerous heat hitting the country. >> yeah, so many people feeling this. more than 85 million americans under heat ar alerts this morning and could break more records. the heat fueling wildfires in california. >> yeah, one of those fires near yosemite national park exploding in size overnight with entire hillsides engulfed in flames forcing people to evacuate their homes. efforts to fight the fire exacerbated by that extreme heat. the worst of it now moving east. sam champion is tracking it all for us, he is in central park this morning. good morning, again, sam. >> good morning, guys. you're right on all of those headlines. this is dangerous and long duration spread everywhere heat. this isn't our normal summer heat and you need to be taking precautions for this. i'm in the park this morning in the shade because this is the best time of the day to get out and do anything you want to do as numbers will go up and pretty high to records over the next

couple of days, even in the northeast and back to it in the northwest as well. fires, we've been talking about that. i'll show you this fire that exploded in size, the oak fire in central california. that is 4,300 acres. now 0% contained. low humidity, gusty winds there, very, very dry. reut't do you the fire weather megaought. the cobeyookt these numbers and y how does a fire explode? well, some weather scientists, the folks who kind of study droughts, and you can find this in the scientific journal "nature climate change" say it's the worst drought in 1,200 years. the air is so dry it sucks the moisture out of the ground and trees and that's how you get explosive fire burn. here are the temperatures that go along with that during the day today. 110 in vegas, 109 in palm springs and, of course, we need to talk about the northeast moving into that heat. haven't been in it yet this summer, though a lot of the country has. but we step into it as we go through the day today.

look at the numbers all across the country, northwest gets into that heat starting the end of this weekend and inland areas and coastal areas for next week, so none of us are out of this dangerous heat. >> looking at that map looks like there's no place to take a break from the heat. thank you. the latest on president biden taking the antiviral medication paxlovid as he's treated for covid-19. abc white house correspondent maryalice parks joins us with more. maryalice, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. today is day two of what will be at least five days of the president isolating. the big message from the president's doctors and the white house team is that the president's symptoms have been improving. his doctors yesterday said he still had fatigue, a runny nose and loose cough, reporters saw him briefly virtually as he met with some advisers remotely and you could hear that his voice was a little raspy. he did clear his throat a few times. you could hear him cough when one of his other advisers was speaking. we are told that thursday the president was given tie len ol after his temperature rose a bit to 99.4, not quite a fever, but

all the rest of his vital signs were in the normal range. he's been taking paxlovid, like you said, and will continue to do that. dr. ashish jha, the white house covid response coordinator, said that a couple of times since testing positive, the president has also used an albuterol inhaler he had. the white house says they have contacted 17 people including senior staff and members of congress who they considered close contacts with the president. they said that so far none of them have tested positive. dr. jha, they're really trying to enforce that the president was in a good mood, still had worked a full day and even had his appetite. janai. >> maryalice, thank you for that update. now to whoopi goldberg and her upcoming passion project about emmett till and his family's fight for justice. it took a decade for the oscar winner to bring this film to the big screen and i sat down with whoopi and the team behind the movie to look back at this crucial chapter in american history and why they say it's a story that had to be told no matter how long it took. it was the muder that stunned a

nation in 1955. emmett till, the young black boy killed in mississippi after whistling at a white woman igniting a spark in the civil rights movement. now oscar winner whoopi goldberg and film director chinonye chukwu are teaming up bringing this crucial story in american history to the big screen. >> when you talk about the struggle to get this film made, why? >> this is a story that people think they know and they know it because they've heard half tales of what went on and how this all went down, but people forget these are two people, a mother and a son. and in the middle of all of this nation could throw at two people, they threw. and mamie threw it back and, said, we're not going to close the casket.

i want them to see what they did to my son. it's a mother's story. >> what did that mean to you in taking on this project? >> that meant writing and directing a film that is from the perspective of the woman for whom we give credit for us even knowing who emmett till was and credit to a lot of the freedom work that came after 1955 that she was a catalyst for. >> reporter: danielle deadwyler plays mamie till-mobley bringing the civil right activist's legacy to life. >> it's everything to embody the experience of this kind of legacy that i've known all my life. it's what you learn about, the terror that black people have had to experience in this country. i yielded myself and i understood this to be a great service. it's beyond an honor. >> reporter: like you heard

i am excited about this segment. the headlines we're following right now, and that dangerous heat wave from coast to coast, temperatures skyrocketing in the east, triggering health alerts and impacting travel while out west extreme heat fueling wildfires and sparking new ones. some big changes as world wrestling entertainment chairman and ceo vince mcmahon announces he is retiring and his daughter and current wwe president nick khan will be taking over. the 76-year-old is considered one of the most important figures in the pro wrestling arena. mcmahon had already given up some of his control with the company following reports of payouts to former female employees over alleged sexual misconduct. the toronto blue jays scoring a franchise record 28 runs as they defeated the boston red sox, 28-5. the blue jays also tied for the fifth most runs plated in a major league baseball regular season game since the year 1901. the modern mlb record still

doesn't cup up. you want to have as much surface area contact as you possibly can. seasoning goes in or on the patty right before. >> both sides. >> want to make sure actually that your burger is as cold as possible. so like steak, sometimes you want to leave them out at room temperature. burgers, go as cble into the pan. >> why is that? >> same reason, to keep the fat in there and keep it really nice and tight, because otherwse that fat is going to melt out too fast and you end up with a dry patty. >> don't mess with it. get it in. >> that is correct. >> from here from the cooking, we go to building. >> that's correct. >> i'll build over here but i want you to talk about -- guys, this is called million dollar bacon. i need to have a piece of it. maybe we could take the million dollars and buy some springsteen tickets, but we'll do the million dollar bacon. >> so if you build the burgers, these are done over here. the million dollar bacon we

serve at our restaurants, amazing, has this great flavor profile. we take the slices, dredge it in brown sugar, cayenne pepper, black pepper and maple syrup. >> maple syrup. >> then put it on a roasting rack. and once you get that finished, that's going to go in the oven, 325, for about 20 minutes. 18, 20 minutes. and you end up with this amazing product here, as you can see the fat is rendered out and you have that beautiful crust over the top of it, giving it a nice sugary glaze and heat in there. we serve it at our restaurants but always have it on the weekends at the house and it's nice. you have that for breakfast and put it on your burger in the afternoon when you have people over for a party. >> this is avocado mash. you want this on yours. >> i do want that on mine, yes, please. also something we use in the restaurant. a key ingredient for avocado toast. fresh avocados, first watch seasoning and a little bit of fresh lemon juice and like to leave it chunky. i believe that avo mash is better on a burger because slices slide off.

welcome back to "gma" and the zero proof dating trend. sober dates proving to have legs. 75% of users saying in a survey they would prefer not to drink on those first few dates. so how do you bring this up with your new boo? here to break down the benefits is dating coach and founder of smart dating academy, b bela gandhi. bela, we are so glad to have you here to break this down for us. this is a hit. why would people -- look, i know the reason, i'm sure you guys too, why you would not drink on dates. why is this a trend now? >> look, the pandemic had no small role in this, right? so many singles had to quarantine alone by themselves so they said, you know, i really like true love, true partnership and a healthy partner. they're dating more intentionally to find healthy partners. a great way to do that is to be

sober to make good choices while you're dating. >> i think i know the answer, but what are the benefits to dating like this? >> so people want authenticity, right? if you think about it, when we drink too much, we become a different version of yourselves. and as we drink more, that version is probably not the best version of ourselves. from a mental health standpoint that people are prioritizing now, that first drink might feel great to take the hard edges off of our anxiety. but ultimately alcohol is a depressant, so if you're prone to being sad, angry when you're drinking, not a good idea. we overshare and we move things too fast when we're drinking, so at smart dating academy we want everyone to not miss the red flags that people throw down early on. if you're buzzed, you might miss them. >> that's key, right? >> so key. >> want to catch the red flags right away. but how do you communicate this with a potential date that you want to have a date but without

the alcohol? >> so, if not drinking is a priority for you, you can write it right in your profile and a lot of apps, you can designate these are my drinking preferences and this is what i want for my partner as well. a low-stakes way that people ask people out all the time, do you want to grab a drink. if you don't want a drink, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have to shut this person down, but counter-suggest a good, creative date that doesn't resolve around alcohol. and here's the key, short and sweet. >> like a coffee. i like a coffee. you won't to give someone your nght until you want to give them your evening hours. [ laughter ] >> i have nothing to say. >> i 100% agree. >> you have a past a test to get an evening date. >> i did, breakfast then dinner, but really as people are trying not to do this, you can talk about it up front first and let people know. >> you can definitely let people know and don't schedule a four-hour kayak date with somebody, right, again, short and sweet.
