>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> the fire is moving towards us faster and faster. stephanie: growing wildfire has forced evacuations from several areas around yosemite national park. it is saturday, july 23. i'm stephanie sierra. we will have the latest on the oak fire in a moment. first, a quick look at the weather. lisa: good morning. the local weather has air-conditioning, mother nature providing at the shoreline. you can see how it pushed and across the bay in oakland, el cerrito and down the peninsula. this is the view from mount tam. we are looking at temperatures

on the cool side. low 50's downtown. you can see san francisco socked in with gray skies. that will clear. mid-50's in napa. clear and cool in the inland valleys. overnight we have the fog in the north bay. a look at the sunny shark tank. as numbers climb this afternoon they will not be as warm as they could be this time of year. 70's, bayshore. upper 80's and the inland valley. slightly warmer sunday and a look at the yosemite satellite picture coming up. stephanie: thank you. a wildfire and mariposa county has forced evaluations around your 70 national park. new video overnight of the so-called oak fire which ignited yesterday afternoon. it has burned more than 6500 acres. cal fire says the flames are spreading rapidly and it's still

0% contained. 10 structures have burned or are destroyed. alex presha has the latest. alex: the urgent fight to get the upper hand on this dangerou. >> seven people unable to get out. seven people trapped in a residence and cannot escape. alex: the so-called oak fire now reaching the sierra national forest. the fire sparking friday afternoon southwest of yosemite park, spreading within just one hour. firefighting aircraft battling the stop the flames from the skies as firefighters on the groundwork the dangerous front lights. clouds of dark smoke rising from entire hillsides. >> sheltering in place. alex: cleaving buildings in ruins and coming dangerously close to others. >> the fire was coming towards us faster and faster. alex: doesn't have evacuated in the county's third wildfire in

two weeks. >> i'm hoping we are able to get it out before it damages anybody's homes. alex: another concern is the heat. the fire forcing outages. pg&e says 3100 customers are without power with temperatures creeping closer to 100 degrees today. alex presha, abc news, los angeles. stephanie: breaking news from the world health organization. they are officially declaring the monkeypox outbreak of global -- a global health emergency. to could spill over into more countries and require a coordinate a global response. there have been 16,000 cases outside of africa. the virus has reached 75 countries and territories. the cdc announced the first two confirmed cases in children yesterday, one being a toddler in california. monkeypox spreads through close skin to skin contact which in the case of children can include holding, cuddling, feeding and

through shared items. california has the second most cases in the u.s. behind york. most california cases are here in the bay area. san francisco now has around 200 cases of monkeypox, either probable or confirmed. nearly every bay area county has reported one case. this map shows how widespread it is. new data shows the latinx community in san francisco is being disproportionately impacted by monkeypox. luz pena spoke to community leaders who are urging leaders to change their outreach strategy. luz despite latinos making up 15% of san francisco's population, the latest monkeypox data shows 30% of cases in this city are among this group. >> that's another alarm that is sounding in the community we are responding to. luz: the latino task force has gained the community trust with covid testing and vaccinations.

as a mucky poxvirus spreads disproportionately among the lgbtq latino population the hope is to begin populating for monkeypox at their covid sights. >> it is disheartening. it is a call to action. because we did well with the response to covid we have the infrastructure to do well to respond to have monkeypox is affecting the community. luz: the task force is asking the department of public health to give them vaccines. the supply is limited. >> we have undocumented population and our community. sometimes they don't want to speak out. they don't want to reach out for help. luz: the ceo of the san francisco eight foundation is advocating to not only increase vaccination among the latin community but testing and treatment. >> we need to be ensuring we are using the appropriate equitable lands to ensure -- lens to

ensure education and awareness is available in multiple languages. luz: the waitlist is now over 5000 people. the supervisor criticized the government's response to the crisis. >> they have done the bare minimum, drag along each step of the way and turned out to be a woefully inadequate response where we have significant community spread. stephanie: that was luz pena reporting. when it comes to supply, san francisco requested 35,000 doses of monkeypox vaccines. so far has received over 7000. the eight foundation is now planning a spanish town hall for next week. investigators are looking into a small plane crash in san jose near reed hillview airport. they believe the pilot went down

after taking off yesterday. amanda del castillo spoke with residents who live near the scene. amanda -- >> i heard a big noise. it went like that and then it went right there. amanda: she was outside of her home playing with her grandchild when this piper pa 32 took down power lines and crashed at 7:30 p.m. friday. the faa says the pilot was departing from reed hillview county airport, going belly down. >> this is a residential area. this is not minette of. this is not send martin or palo alto. they are in the middle of a residential area. >> i know. it might have come on top of the house and we were sleeping or playing with the grandchildren. this is too much.

amanda: video shows the moments that followed. residents rushing to the scene, the private laid out on the pavement with a nearby puddle of blood. we are blurring the victim because of the nature of his injuries. >> the plane must have been flying low to hit the power line. he hit the gate and was bleeding and still moving. pretty overwhelming. amanda: police say residents where evacuated. rhodes were closed and late friday police say the pilot sustained life-threatening injuries but had been stabilized. >> we are trying to close the airport and this is good ammunition for us. amanda: residence critical of those in power saying this is one of many aircraft crashes they have seen. on friday, some assisting others in the emergency response. >> there are people helping out, flocking so cars could go around. there were people helping the pilot. amanda: an unfortunate reality, according to residents.

>> i'm very scared. amanda: pg&e has responded, working to respond -- restore power. there was no reported structural damage to any properties. the faa and ntsb are investigating. stephanie: now for a story you will only see on abc 7 news. a customer in the east bay went on a rampage because he did not with the follow covid protocols inside a local bakery. the bakery is considering changes. this is surveillance footage of the man grabbing a counter display and throwing it. the manager of star bread in pittsburgh says the men do not want to wear a mask or distance himself from a customer. the man punched an employee and then pointed at a military shirt asking for respect. >> we had another doughnut case that was thrown over this, at one of the employees. luckily they were able to block it off with his hands.

stephanie: the bakery owner was not so lucky, suffering a broken finger in the altercation. star bread is considering installing a take-out window to keep employees safe. a block party in san francisco's chinatown, the second annual unity block party. it will take place on pacific avenue between stockton street and grand avenue. the goalgoal is to bring togethr chinese and black residents. the party begins at 11:00 this morning. a speaking program begins at 12:30. news from the mega millions jackpot. it is continuing to grow. the bad news, no one one last night's drawing. it is raising the jackpot for $790 million. that could be more good news if there is a tuesday winner. nobody has matched all six numbers since april. now the jackpot is approaching historic territory. officials say only three other

stephanie: president biden says he is feeling better after testing positive for covid. the president was still able to meet with his top economic team via videoconference yesterday. he signed several bills and took part in his daily intelligence briefings over the phone. karina mitchell has more. karina: giving a thumbs up during his first event since his

diagnosis, joe biden eager to reassure americans he is feeling fine. >> i apologize for my voice. i'm feeling better than a sound. karina: the president is considered at greater risk for more severe illness from the virus. a letter from his doctor says his symptoms have improved. he is tolerating treatment well and will continue to take the antiviral drug paxlovid. >> given the fact is vaccinated, doubly boosted on a very good antiviral, we fully expect he will do well. karina: he still has a runny nose, fatigue and the occasional cough. his oxygen levels are normal. the president had an elevated temperature thursday night at 99.4 degrees, which is not considered a fever. he was given tylenol and his temperature has been normal since then. >> over the last two years a lot of people call me when they get a positive diagnosis. they say i'm sorry i failed. if not a failure. it's a very contagious virus. it is widespread.

the state of california. stephanie: the california law that state residents sue anyone who distributes illegal assault weapons or parts that can be used to build weapons. plaintiffs can seek $10,000 in civil damages for each weapon. if the u.s. supreme court strikes down the texas law, it will invalidate the california law. big basin redwood state park is now partially open for the first time in two years. the lightning complex fire left it badly burned. zach fuentes shows us how it looks different. zach: are first steps taken by civilian visitors to the old state park in california in two years. >> it completely different. zach: one of the first visitors was matt ryan and his family. just like the park they were impacted by the complex fire after a difficult two years. he looks at the reopening as a sign of encouragement. >>we have turned a corner may,

hopefully. zach: the devastation can be seen on the way into the park. the august 2020 fire tore through miles of trees and level buildings. not only have so many of the park's iconic redwoods survived, there is new growth, something officials, as a testament to nature's resilience. >> you will see them sprouting from the base, from the stem, even regrowing crowns. zach: the last 23 months have been spent doing tireless work to get the part back open for the public. it's only partially open. reservations are required and so far slots have been booked up for the next 60 days worth of weekends. stewart is a member of friends of santa cruz state parks. he experienced -- he says the experience is priceless. >> this will be like a whole new kind of lesson in the evolution of power forest repairs

itself. zach: there are still years of work ahead for the park to be fully operational. the new milestone only furthers their motivation. >> there was despair. this moment here, it feels really good. it feels like a victory. i'm very pleased to see the public enjoying the park. zach: zach fuentes, abc 7 news. stephanie: it is race weekend in san francisco. the 45th san francisco marathon starts tomorrow morning at 5:30 on the embarcadero at mission street. yesterday thousands picked up their race packets at the fort mason festival pavilion, including a running team that will be making their tandem debut this weekend. if you're curious how the weather will be shaping up for the race and across the bay, lisa argen is tracking it all. it got a little cooler when we stepped outside this morning. lisa: we needed the coat. by this afternoon breezy winds. the pattern we have been in and what you expect from a july.

the wildfire season locally obviously has not been destructive. we cannot say the same thing for the sierra nevada with a third fire in mariposa county. as we look at the low clouds and fog blanketed not only the coast but well across the bay into oakland and down through san francisco. we have had mist and drizzle through -- here's a look at the plume of smoke here from down from fresno. we had a southeasterly wind. the smoke from the san joaquin valley up through southern sierra and the unhealthy air at times continues to track to the north over the weekend. we have good air quality with a strong onshore flow locally. as we look at air quality towards fresno, looking pretty good. overall i'm not -- it's not horrible.

we are looking at the onshore flow and the winds to push the smoke up from yosemite through the southern sierra and over the state line into nevada as we get into your early sunday. sonora, southlake. you may see upper level smoke there. otherwise low-pressure off the coast doing its job here bringing in the mist and drizzle. a wide range of temperatures once again today from the coast, beaches and inland valleys. trim back a couple of degrees today. 53, downtown. 60, palo alto. 63, santa clara. mid-50's at mount tam. temperatures above the marine layer near 70 degrees. relative humidity quite dry. anywhere from 10% to 20% for mount diablo and mount tam. highs in the 80's today over 2000 feet. we get the cool marine layer underneath. looking at the high relative humidity allowing for those 50's.

mid-70's. mid and upper 80's by the afternoon. the fog coming quickly back into play. we will talk about a warmer sunday coming up. stephanie: thank you. governor newsom has just announced california will receive a federal grant to help crews battle of fast-moving wildfire in mariposa county. cal fire says it has grown to more than 6500 acres as of this morning. this is new video of the so-called oak fire which ignited yesterday afternoon. it has forced evacuations for several areas around yosemite national park. it is still 0% contained. at least 10 structures have burned, including some on triangle road in mariposa. a downtown resident tells is a dangerous mix of conditions have left his neighborhood extremely vulnerable. >> is extremely dry. right now it is really windy out there. all the trees are blowing around. it is pretty much the worst

conditions you can imagine. super dry, superhot and windy. >> they told us everyone has to go. at 4:00 the power went out. the fire has been coming towards us faster and faster. stephanie: evacuation centers are open for residents who had to leave their homes. the red cross is on hand to assist. one center was relocated due to how fast the fire was spreading. investigators are trying to determine the cause of a small plane crash and it eased san jose neighborhood that injured the pilot. the plane came crashing down at ocala and carl street. the pilot just took off from the airport. it took down power lines and crashed at about 7:30 last night. video shared with abc 7 news shows the moments that followed. residents rushed to help the pilot. we have blurred the victim because of the nature of his injuries.
