>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. >> a wildfire threat that is quickly growing, doubling in size overnight. the fire is now more than 22 square miles. new reinforcements are joining the firefight. good evening. thanks for joining us. developing news tonight on the wildfire. it's just one of two burning in the yosemite area. the oak fire resulted in yet another round of evacuations today. calfire says it is the biggest fire of the year and there is no containment. our reporter joins us now with a look at the strategy to fight these claims and the local fire crew involved. all hands on deck here. >> firefighters from across california are on the front lines, including a strike team from in the bay area.

the fast-moving fire still forcing thousands from their homes. the oak fire is raging. this time lapse video showing smoke and flames billowing high above the ridge in mariposa county. fire crews are working around the clock on the ground and in the air. the wildfire is so big it can be seen from the international space station. >> further down the road, it starts to intensify. those trees will be coming down. >> they arrived right around daybreak after traveling all night. >> a strike team from around the bay area is assisting. they were able to save part of this burning home saturday afternoon. >> they happened to be on this country road and found the home engulfed in flames and tried to save the garage and in law unit

that was being exposed. >> the fire is becoming one of the largest of the year. homes and cars engulfed, some people trapped inside their houses. >> people are unable to get out. they cannot escape. >> more than 6000 people have been forced to evacuate. >> it's pretty difficult. it's going to get drier and hotter. >> evacuees hoping they will be able to return home soon. >> it's really heartbreaking because it's been year after year. >> governor newsom has declared a state of emergency in mariposa county. while fired -- wildfire smoke was impacting air quality in lake tahoe, especially the south shore. >> taking a live look outside, you can see it is looking clear, but we could see smoky conditions.

>> as we look at air quality conditions, we are seeing all this green indicating good air quality. just a few areas with moderate. closer to the fire, the dark circles indicating poor air quality, unhelpful. a big buildup of hazardous smoke near the fire. not much of that will reach into the bay area. we may see a greater buildup in the upper atmosphere. a little haze, but we don't expect any buildup of hazardous materials or pollutants to make it down to the surface in the bay area. the situation is looking very concerning in the area of the fire down into the southern sierra and even moving into parts of the central valley. we will keep an eye on that for you and update you as we get

more information. >> the second wildfire burning in yosemite national park remains 79% contained today. both containment and the spread of the fire are holding steady since yesterday with flames burning more than seven square miles. the washburn fire is about 12 miles east of the oak fire. firefighters have gained enough ground that highway 41 reopened yesterday so visitors could get through the park's south entrance. fire crews made a fast work of a fire in morgan hill that threatened structures this afternoon. it broke out close to highway 101. flames destroyed a number of vehicles, but firefighters were able to keep forward progress of the flames to half an acre. you can always track the wildfires burning right now in california by using our online interactive wildfire tracker. find it at abc7news.com. building a better bay area means

disease, including asthma, or had lower levels of a particular antibody. about 57% of 179 people in the study reported persistent symptoms. dr. fauci said this weekend that he believes covid will not be eliminated or even eradicated. the president's chief medical advisor blames the virus's transmissibility. in the north bay, one is dead and two others are injured after a shooting this morning in marin city. it happened at about 10:30. several officers responded and found a car with several bullet holes in the window of the passenger side door. one neighbor said she's had enough of the violence. >> i heard automatic. it's just another tragedy. that's why i have to move. that's what i have to get out of here. >> there is no word of any arrests or a motive for the shooting. the marin county sheriff's department says the two other victims are expected to survive.

family and friends of the men killed at the livermore bowling alley held a fundraiser today. they gathered to remember the 28-year-old, antonio vargas, and to show their support. he was shot last weekend during an argument. vargas was a dacca recipient -- daca recipient who owned a carpet cleaning business and his family was devastated by his death. >> we are here trying to give him the best service he deserves. >> livermore police arrested a 27-year-old on wednesday and he faces a number of charges, including murder. more than $30,000 has been raised for vargas and his family through a gofundme. coming up, the fight for abortion rights brought people together today in san francisco. wll or theded tble to gwere oen

>> activists converged on the golden gate bridge today to demand reproductive justice for all. speakers called for roe v. wade to be reinstated immediately. they praised the 17 members of congress who were arrested at an abortion rights protest outside the court on tuesday. today's protest was deeply personal for one woman who had an abortion in michigan in 1971.

register as non-binary. congratulations to anyone who participated, not an easy feat. today is the final day of comic-con international at the san diego convention center. for decades, comic-con has been filled with comic books and celebrities from the big screen and lots of merchandise. months preparing their costume for the annual event. some were even emotional when they heard comic-con was making a comeback since the pandemic. this vendor says comic-con is not back at its full potential just yet. >> not just yet. i think next year will be the full-scale one. this is kind of the transition into something bigger and better. dion: people who were not able to attend this year's event were able to enjoy comic-con style experiences outside the convention center. going back to the marathon earlier today, really good weather for it. cool in the early hours, then

warming up nicely. spencer: that's what marathon runners want. nice onshore breeze. extreme warmth kept away. the forecast from the near surface smoke from the fires over in yosemite. over the next 24 hours, although there will be a significant buildup of hazardous smoke near the fires and in parts of the central valley, just a little bit of haze moving in the direction of northern california and the bay area. we are not expecting to feel any significant impact here at the surface although there could be more buildup at the higher elevations. in the bay area, we have surfaced wins -- winds that are quite strong. 24 hour temperature change, most locations are a couple degrees cooler than at this time yesterday.

we see some fog moving through the golden gate right now. 63 across the bay in oakland. 70's in palo alto and san jose. here's a view of the golden gate where the fog is quite prominent. the north bay is cool as the fog is reaching there and keeping the temperature is down. 72 in petaluma. 89 at fairfield. the inland east bay, 87 under sunny skies. we have lots of blue sky over the bay, but the fog and low clouds are increasing and will push out over the bed tonight. low clouds and fog tonight with drizzle, some wet spots for the morning commute. slightly warmer pattern by the end of the week. the fog is going to expand quite far inland overnight. lots of little patches of
