the bay area abc 7 news at 11:00 begins in 60 seconds. here's why tribal leaders urge you to vote yes on prop 27. the act provides hundreds of millions every year for permanent solutions to homelessness, mental health and addiction in california. prop 27 supports financially disadvantaged tribes that don't own big casinos. by taxing and regulating online sports betting for adults 21 and over, we can protect tribal sovereignty and finally do something about homelessness in california.

vote yes on prop 27. buila moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. this is our home. a wildfire continues to explode near yosemite national park forcing people to evacuate as the flames show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dion limb. you're watching abc 7 news at 11. the oak fire remains out of control tonight and keeps on growing it is now scorched more than 15,000 acres which makes the fire in mariposa county the largest in the state this year. cal fire says at least 10 buildings have been destroyed including some homes thousands of structures remained threatened and more than 6,000 people have been told to evacuate we begin our coverage with nick garcia with our sister station in fresno.
11:02 pm
the oak fire is burning into its third night and is unlike anything many firefighters have ever seen before there are crews from southern california and the bay area all up and down the state. the flames are moving in all directions and with the wind crews are worried the emperors could jump whatever lines they've established. hundreds of people filed into the auditorium at mariposa county high school. hoping to get their questions answered by fire officials and the mariposa county sheriff despite some progress on the western side near highway 140 fire crews still have a long way to go. you have a lot of structure fence yet the fire continues to spread to the east farther into the sierra forest, but with embers flying a dry areas hotspots start like this and swiftly become massive flames. that's what happened on frank wentzel's properties saturday night the actual fire came at us
11:03 pm
360 degrees. so it was coming from this way, you know all the way around us. he lives on triangle road to outbuildings in his yard were torched by the oak fire. he's thankful his house survived wencel found himself doing what he could to help fire crews his brother who recently passed. a was a firefighter. he was with us the whole time. and i could hear what he would want me to do. and so it was pretty you know pretty important what he taught me over the years wentzel and many others who had to evacuate are facing two threats the fire and looters. there are unfortunately individuals that that may want to try to come up into our evacuated areas and they want to try to victimize us mariposa residents miracles and county members. we will be there to deal with that guarantee. that's not going to be welcome law enforcement it's pat.
11:04 pm
evacuation zones around the clock so those evacuated feel safe and fire crews can focus on the beast of a fire raging on. and there were also some questions about forest management. cal fire says ahead of this fire. they were working to clear some dead trees and brush, but there was just so much of it. there's no way they could have cleared it all before the oak fire broke out. also us forest service and cal fire investigators are on the ground here trying to determine what sparked this fire in mariposa county. i'm nick garcia abc 7 news now as we mentioned the oak fire is the largest in california this year and abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard takes a look at the strategy to fight the flames and the local fire crew involved. the oak fire is raging this time-lapse video showing smoke in flames bellowing high above the ridge and mariposa county fire crews are working around the clock on the ground and in the air the wildfire growing so
11:05 pm
big it could be seen from the international space station fur ther default of all that dead available fuel is burning with a high. right around daybreak after traveling all night a strike team from the bay area is now assisting on the fire lines including a crew from the alameda county fire department. they were able to save partf this burning home saturday afternoon. the home engulfed in flames and women to action to try to save the garage in-law unit that was being exposed the fire burning outside. yosemite has becoming one of the largest of the year homes and cars engulfed. some people trapped inside their houses. get out there stuck in the residents and cannot escape more than 6,000 people have been forced to evacuate.
11:06 pm
it's pretty difficult. and it's it only appears, you know, it's gonna get drier hotter evacuees hoping they'll be able to return home soon. it's really heartbreaking because it's been year after year. and governor grab a newsome has declared a state of emergency in mariposa county wildfire smoke from the oak. fire was already impacting air quality around lake tahoe, especially on the south shore. i'm cornell bernard abc 7 news. well meantime the washburn fire which is burning i remains 79% contained tonight. it is burned nearly 4900 acres since it started back on july 7th. firefighters report the smokedrt it's impacting this fire but in a good way, it has kept the heat at bay, which has helped them gain control of the flames. now smoke from the oak fire is already drifting across the state and experts believe some of that smoke will enter parts of the bay area starting tonight abc 7 news reporter jr.
11:07 pm
stone is following the story and spoke with experts tonight. plumes of smoke like this have been billowing into the air ever since the oak fire started on friday in mariposa county now a forecast that shows this smoke above the san francisco bay area in the next 24 to 48 hours. we do expect smoke from that oak fire to drift into the bay area higher elevations may have some smoke impacts there aaron demeritus with the bay area air quality management district. well sky's work clear over san francisco and the east bay on day, there is an air quality advisory in place the national weather service released this time lapse smoke forecast map. that shows smoke at high elevations over the entire bay area by tuesday that smoke has already impacted multiple counties. it looks like apocalypse. i mean you look up when the sun's behind it like in the early morning and to mid-afternoon. the sun is right in the
11:08 pm
direction of the smoke and it's just this red ball. in the sky and everything's got an orange hue to it. so it's really ominous scott patrick saw this and evacuated his mariposa county home saturday so far that home is still standing but his description of the sky is reminiscent of what the bay area has seen several times including these orange skies from 2020 something that we asked demerit about sunday right now. we don't expect any kind of impacts like that. like i said air quality is good to moderate and we do expect that for the rest of the week. but when wildfires are active conditions can change very quickly so we will be closely monitoring air quality if you do smell smoke experts we talk with say the recommendation is simple go inside close the doors and close the windows jr. stone abc 7 news. well spencer, you have been tracking the smoke for us. we've have that air quality advisory tomorrow. we were just talking about that day the sky turned orange back in 2020.
11:09 pm
i was unbelievable wasn't so dramatic and so scary in but as you just heard in jr's report, we don't expect that sort of thing to happen this time around. let's take a look at our current air quality, which is quite good as indicated by all those green circles and as we move over toward the sierra and towards of course the oak fire you can see those darker colored circles indicating really unhelpful and poor air quality. so here's what's going on with the near surface smoke now again, i underscore near surface smoke in the higher elevations some of the smoke up there is is quite hazardous. but here is what we to happen over the next 18 to 24 hours. the smoke will remain mainly movilitly sthe tordhe sanoa e aat she surfaceo. ay i the e smoke in the higher elevations not because of any significant pollutants reaching the surface.

11:17 pm
specialist at ucsf. he says the higher rates of transmission are being met with slow response and not enough vaccines but fda recommends two doses of the monkeypox vaccine to be most effective but because of the lack of supply dr. chin hong says the new strategy is to administer. just one dose there is actually some laboratory data suggesting that one dose can actually have up to two years of protection. i hope it doesn't spread more broadly, but it definitely could and if it does and then we see a much broader slot of the population seeking vaccines that will quickly swamp the system california state senator scott weiner who represents san francisco is concerned that like other infectious disease outbreaks monkeypox could become endemic he's calling for urgency funding from the state to provide funding to local counties, especially for more testing wieners says governor gavin newsom addressed monkeypox with the white house during his recent trip to dc and that other senior state health officials have held high-level level talks
