the chimney still stands. not much of anything else. you can get an idea of a metal cabinet that still kind of stands, but that's about it. the oak fire has taken this home, several others and it is still swallowing these hills swiftly. the fire behavior has been erratic. this morning flames from the oak fire burning across mariposa county. so far consuming nearly 15,000 acres near yosemite national park. people evacuating their homes. governor newsom declaring a state of emergency. linda and aubrey brown fled as the oak fire encroached, the couple watching the sky transform into an orange haze. >> it was just coming too fast. it was getting bigger and bigger and closer and closer. >> reporter: panic and chaos along the evacuation route. >> it was pluming up over. >> reporter: the fire devouring everything it touched. forest floors ablaze in glowing orange. firefighters tackling the

wildfire on all fronts, launching a full force aerial response. >> when they tell you to leave, leave. stubbornness is the worst thing. if it doesn't kill you, it's going to kill somebody else. >> reporter: the fire so far is 0% contained. thousands are threatened. >> the growth of this fire is pretty amazing given the fact how quickly we had resources there from the large air tankers to the helicopters to the lead planes across the board. >> reporter: smoke billowing into the night. during the day, it is so thick it can be seen from the international space station. this time lapse showing the growing pyrocumulus. the flames accelerated by the drought. nearly 60% of california is in the second highest level of drought. the oak fire is in exceptional drought, the highest level. fire officials describing unique fire behavior, group torching where the fire builds and intensifies because the fuels

or the brush in the forest are so dry. the fire approaches and the little moisture there is is pulled out and the surrounding trees ignite from bottom up. its impact, devastating. this newly married couple returning to their home, which is now ashes. only a small sense of relief that a few possessions somehow survived. >> oh, my gosh. the cherry tree survived. >> reporter: you see me wearing this respirator as is my whole crew. when you burn a home like this, it's toxic soup. the thick smoke is still around all throughout these hills. look at that smoke forecast as it blows to north, northwest. part is because of the way the heat is building and the atmospheric steering mechanisms. keep an eye on the orange skies and extra haze. if you have trouble with

respiratory issue, it's something to keep in mind. excessive heat warnings in oregon and washington state. we're talking about 100s again. this doesn't look prolonged like last summer. did it really peak out east. newark at 102, boston massachusetts was 100, philadelphia 99, la guardia 98, new hampshire had a temperature close to 100 over the weekend. we're going to see a cold front approach and cut through the humidity, but with it comes severe storms. as you get rid of the front, you'll have damaging winds. this takes trees into homes, into cars, the type that gets underestimated. they say it's not a tornado warning. no, isolated tornados are possible. damaging winds coming through, you want to watch for those. robin? >> weather always relentless. ginger, thanks very much. george? to washington and the latest on president biden's battle with covid. his personal physician says he's on the mend.

terry moran has the latest. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. by all signs president biden is doing really well. that is the message his physician dr. kevin o'connor at the white house, including dr. ashish jha. white house officials are putting out after the president spent the weekend in isolation in the white house. improving significantly, that's the word. remember the symptoms the president complained about last week, he had a runny nose, dry cough, fatigue and body aches. those have diminished considerably and the doctor says his lungs are clear and he has no shortness of breath and continues to be able to work. the white house says this is what the in the works for most people who get double vaccinated and double boosted even at age 79. and this is his fifth day now on paxlovid, which is a drug available to all americans and has a very powerful effect for those especially most at risk like older americans. it's good news from the white

house and they're trying to use it as a teaching moment for the rest of us. >> the president likely infected by the ba.5 variant. that's the most prevalent strain in the u.s. right now. >> reporter: it is, george. the cdc says that 87% of americans are living in counties where there is a high or medium risk of getting covid. what that means is that in those high risk counties in particular, in that 64% of americans, the health care system can come under strain. hospitalizations and deaths considerably lower than they were at the beginning of the pandemic. when you get this much virus, you can get an impact on the health care system. that's what they're worried about. >> terry moran, thanks very much. michael? now to the stark warning about the monkeypox outbreak. the world health organization now calling it a public health emergency of international concern. there are nearly 3,000 cases in the u.s., including two children. eva pilgrim is in los angeles with more. good morning, eva. >> reporter: good morning,

michael. this is something that anyone can get. we are now seeing cases in almost all 50 states. monkeypox global health emergency, the world health organization making the declaration as monkeypox cases surge in more than 75 countries. in the u.s. there are about 7,900 cases including two children. both likely got the virus at home. will hutchinson was diagnosed with monkeypox two weeks ago. >> i got chills. i had a lot of aches and i also had a super low grade fever. >> reporter: monkeypox is part of the same family of viruses as smallpox but is considered less severe. the symptoms -- fever, headache, muscle aches and a rash, blisters that appear on the face, inside the mouth and on other body parts. the majority of cases have occurred among gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men. health officials stress anyone who has close contact with

someone with monkeypox can get it. >> transmission can also happen from sharing towels or clothing. >> reporter: most cases here in the u.s. have been mild, needing limited treatment but requiring isolation for about three weeks because it's so contagious. the outbreak now has u.s. healt g public health ergency. the u.s. originally n vacc e ordered an additional 2.5 million but health officials admit they do not have enough vaccines to meet demand. michael? >> who are health officials saying should get vaccinated right now? >> reporter: health officials are saying if you've been exposed or at high risk of being exposed, those are the people who should get vaccinated. with a limited supply of vaccines, they want those who need it most to be able to get it.

michael? >> all right, makes sense. thank you so much, eva. robin? now to the war in ukraine and new accusations of russia abducting and relocating thousands of ukrainian children. this comes after russian strikes on a strategic port city just hours after agreeing to a new deal to allow grain exports from there. our senior foreign correspondent ian pannell is there in ukraine for us. good morning, ian. >> reporter: good morning, robin. we're in kharkiv, the city that's been mercilessly attacked since day one of this year. russia tried and fail to capture this area. we're learning that some areas have been under occupation for some time and renewed allegations of forced deportations. this morning alarming reports of russian kidnapping. ukraine's ambassador to the u.s. claiming hundreds of thousands of ukrainians, including children, are being forcefully deported to russia. >> this is a brutal violation not only of international law, but of common decency.

how can you steal our children and try to hide them in russia? >> reporter: ukrainian and american officials have been warning of the displacements for months and called on russia to halt the deportations, citing war crimes. >> first russia makes orphans, then it steals those orphans. ukrainian kids being stolen and given to russian families, potentially never to be found by their families again. >> reporter: russia claims these are evacuations from dangerous regions and the children are traveling voluntarily. this morning a russian strike southeast of kharkiv, four injured, three people still under the rubble. emergency services racing to the rescue. over the weekend russia attacking this strategic port city of odesa. video circulating online showing the moment the port was struck, the russian attack coming just a day after ukraine and russia signed a major deal to reopen the port and restart grain

thnd trying to flee the flames. also, the world health organization has declared monkeypox a global health emergency as cases surge in more than 75 countries. about 2,900 cases here in the u.s., including two children. the u.s. has ordered 2.5 million vaccines and another 2.5 million. health officials don't have enough yet to meet demand. evacuations in parts of japan after a volcano erupted sunday. the country raised the emergency alert level to its highest level. it has spewed large rocks as far as 1.5 miles away. have you seen this indivivideo? a humpback whale caught on camera reaching the water off a coast, landing on that fishing boat. the boat sustained minor damage, but thankfully was able to return to shore and no one was injured. the environmental police are investigating the incident. and we have a lot more ahead this morning including prince harry's major court victory and what it means for his family. that is coming up.

michael? first, we turn to a family camping tragedy in iowa. a 6-year-old girl and her parents shot to death. only her 9-year-old brother survived. police say the suspected gunman was found dead nearby, but they are searching for a motive this morning. will reeve joins uwi >> good morning, michael. it's unfathomable. this family camping, three of them killed, seemingly randomly. when authorities found them, they evacuated the campground and one camper was at first, ped killer. >> reports of a possible shooting. >> reporter: this morning, a community shocked and grieving after three of this family of four were found dead in a horrific murder/suicide at an iowa campground. >> if you would have given me 50 million things that were to come from the other end of that phone, i never would have guessed 50,000,001 was the outcome of what happened. >> reporter: tyler and sarah schmidt and their 7-year-old

daughter lulu found dead in their tent on friday. their 9-year-old son arlo surviving, running to get help. >> a report of a child who went to another camper said that there was a possible shooting in his camper. the parents are in there. >> there's a 9-year-old now who needs to be supported with more love than ever, and that is the only by that we'll be able to continue on in remembering their legacy. >> reporter: the family from cedar falls was on vacation. sarah's heart broken younger otl be remembered for their altruism. >> they were the quintessential american couple and family of four. they were very supportive of everything you've ever done, and more importantly was how much they put everybody else first in virtually everything they did. >>a stranger wearing all black got in the tent, had some sort of a small gun and he took off running. >> reporter: authorities say the suspected killer was found dead nearby in an apparent suicide. they believe 23-year-old anthony sherwin of nebraska had a gun. they're investigating any possible connection to the family he's believed to have killed. the mother of the suspect who

was also at the camp at the time of shooting telling a nebraska newspaper she refuses to believe the news, writing in a statement to abc news, he gave us no warning that he was planning anything of this sort. anthony was not capable of this sort of violence, but authorities say all indicators point to the suspect. >> there's nothing to indicate that there was anyone else responsible or anyone else acting with him. >> reporter: investigators tell abc news nothing like this has ever happened at the camp. sarah schmidt's brother says 9-year-old arlo is safe with family. police are still searching for a motive for the shooting as they await autopsy results. michael? >> heartbreaking, will. george? >> sure is. now to prince harry's legal victory. maggie rulli is in london with the latest on that. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: good morning, george. prince harry's lawyers say he's

reluctant to bring his children into the uk because he doesn't think it's safe. now he's fighting for full-time security. a major legal victory for prince harry. the duke of sussex challenging the uk government and winning the first round in his legal battle over security for him and his family in the uk. when the duke and duchess of sussex stepped back from royal duties in 2020, the government decided harry would no longer receive taxpayer-funded protection while in britain, even if he covered the cost himself, something he says he's willing to do. now the judge ruling his case can proceed to the high court. the judge citing transparency, adding that the prince should have had a chance to make his case. >> he says that since birth he's been born into a world that requires that level of security not just to keep himself safe, but also his extended family, the people he marries, the children he has. >> reporter: prince harry telling oprah security remains a top priority. >> my family literally cut me off financially, and i had to afford security for us. >> reporter: at the time, a decision was made by a committee

for the protection of royalty and public figures that security would be granted on a case by case basis, but he wants police protection full time when they're on british soil. >> when diana died, she didn't have protection. she had private security at that point. i think it's very clear that prince harry feels that the police protection is superior, and that is what he wants for his family. >> reporter: since moving to california, the prince and his family have relied on a privately funded security team, but his lawyers hope to expand that soon. and the judge also made it very clear that just because this case is allowed to move forward, it doesn't mean it will succeed in the final hearing. george? >> okay, maggie. thanks very much. let's bring in ourt's bring in contributor, robert jobson. robert, thanks for coming back. how significant is this ruling? >> well, it's the first stage in the home office's case, so we'll have to wait and see. ultimately, george, i think the home office and scotland yard is

getting this completely wrong. ultimately prince harry was -- was a serving soldier on the front line twice. he is a legitimate target to terrorists, and can you just imagine -- can you just imagine the issues if something did happen whilst his family and he were here? i think that they really should just come to some sort of sensible compromise. >> that seems like common sense to me as well. if they go through with it all the way, what are the chances that harry wins? >> well, i think they're pretty -- at the moment, they're probably 50/50. the fact is the home office can't say they're going to defend everybody. obviously they can't. but as it stands at the moment, george, former prime ministers get protection, certain ministers from northern ireland, ministers that are no longer in office. we have had situations here where mps -- my mps was actually murdered in a terrorist incident. we should be looking beyond the court cases and the optics and the pr, and look at what would actually happen if something bad happened to him because i think that ultimately this whole case

would be looked at in a very bad light in that case. >> no question about that. i guess the fact it's even a fight says something about the relationship between harry and the rest of the royal family. >> yeah, it does, and i think during the case it did come up that the queen's private secretary had some input into this decision according to harry's team of lawyers. obviously there's an issue he has with the queen's private secretary. i think that's some of the team around her recently. i think that he feels that it's a personal attack against him, but ultimately, you know, i think really in terms of the amount of money involved here, it's negligible to the problems that it could cause if something happens. >> let's hope they work it out. robert jobson, thanks very much. robin? all right, george. coming up later, the new study about vaping. who's cutting down and who's vaping more than ever? and coming up next, back to wakanda. the brand-new "black panther"

before the fire took everything. that wasn't the case as it ripped through mariposa county. thousands have been evacuated from their homes and this thing has scorched at least 15,000 acres. this morning, flames from the oak fire racing across mariposa county. the wildfire burning explosively. so far consuming more than 15,000 acres near yosemite national park. roughly 3,800 people evacuating their homes. governor newsom declaring a state of emergency. linda and aubrey brown fled as the oak fire encroached. the couple watching the sky transform to an orange haze. >> it was just coming too fast. it was getting bigger and bigger and closer and closer. >> reporter: the fire devouring everything it touches. forest floors ablaze in a glowing orange. firefighters tackling the wildfire on all fronts, launching a full-force aerial response.

the fire is so far 0% contained and it's taken out ten structures and damaged five, but thousands more are threatened. >> the growth of this fire is pretty amazing given the fact of how quickly we had resources there, from the large air tankers to the helicopters and the lead planes across the board. >> reporter: the flames accelerated by the drought. nearly 60% of california is in the second highest level of drought, but the oak fire is in that exceptional drought, the highest level. drying it out even more will be the heat here. we are going to make it well into the 90s and the heat is building all the way through the pacific northwest. there are heat advisories and also extreme heat warnings. look in oregon. you can even see medford get to 109 today. yakima, 106. we had a big weekend of heat on the east coast too. records were broken. newark made it to 102. they had five days of 100 plus. something they haven't done since the 1930s when records

now we'll turn to the new study about young people and e-cigarettes and how the youngest americans might be getting the message as health concerns grow. our chief medical correspondent dr. jen ashton. thank you for joining us this morning. tell us about this study. >> first of all, we love to hear good news when it comes to public health or medical studies. this is really about the who, when and how much, looking at e-cig use in this country from 2017 to 2020. overall there has been a slight decline, attributed mostly to 18 to 20-year-olds not starting. however, people who already use e-cigs smoking slightly more often, and this is in the 21 to 24-year-old age group. from a public health observation, it's important information. >> what are the health risks especially for young people? >> we want to focus on that young adult group and teenagers, of course, because that is a completely different risk
