know you may smell some of that smoke coming from the oak fire. we have clouds, patchy drizzle, they will return every night of the seven day forecast, especially in the inland and east bay neighborhoods. then we have minor temperature changes all week even as we get into next monday, which is august 1. it's already here. here's a look at the smoke forecast. the orange is the higher elevation. you get toward the sierra and that's where we have a rainbow of colors. that is the lower elevations, where it's dangerous. notice as we head into tonight and tomorrow, it stays in the sierra but we are seeing a lot of orange in the east bay and north bay and that will continue tomorrow. it's going to look a lot worse than it actually is. we are watching this moisture because a couple of models say this particular setup of storms may drift back our way. i give it about a 10% chance.

the number of people who have never had covid may shrink even more soon as the omicron ba five sub variant continues to search. how likely are you to catch the virus if you've never had it before? joining us live to answer that question and a lot more about covid is the ucf infectious disease specialist. great to see you as always. this is a fascinating topic. i want to go back to something that gentleman in the piece said that maybe he thinks it's 80% lifestyle, 20% luck. no doubt being healthy may help, and genetics may play a role, but it can't just be luck, can it? your body must have, this guy may have some extra resistance other people don't have? >> i think one factor the reporter didn't mention is many people might have gotten it but didn't know they had it. if you look at the cdc data,
4:35 pm
about two thirds of americans have evidence from their antibodies they've seen covid before. up to 70% of kids. that's another factor. when you've gotten it is also an important factor. dan: that's a great point. let's talk quickly about being anti-symptomatic. that means literally there are people who've had it and have had no symptoms whatsoever and there is nothing that would indicate they are sick. >> exactly. we screen everyone who comes and whether they have symptoms or not. i think it's really telling that one in 20 people have absolutely no symptoms but they are testing positive. dan: let's talk about this new variant, the ba five variant that is so transmissible. are you expecting another search? >> i don't think i'm expecting another surge, but rather a slow return to normal. a slow return to ground level. today, when you look at where the viruses in california, we've
4:36 pm
been eclipsed from number one finally in the bay area and southern california's now number one. it means we are barreling through this big surge in the bay area, but people are not getting as reinfected after they've had recent infection. dan: if there is anything that's reassuring, it's today's covid is not what the initial covid was. it's not nearly as dangerous as the early iterations of this virus, correct? >> it can still be dangerous for some people, but because sony people have either had a combination of vaccines, boosting and exposure to virus and the environment, we have an increasingly more protected community. if you look at what happened when omicron went to hong kong and the elder population, it estimated that because they weren't protected in the same way we were. it's part virus but also part
4:37 pm
population immunity. dan: we have had the ba five variant, no reason there won't be a 6, 7, on and on. we may live with covid for quite some time. >> most people think we will probably have on and off periods of infection and quiet periods for about a year. but we will get stronger and stronger every time. even though we have had absolute hot levels of virus in the community, the hospitals, even though moderately full, have never seen the previous surges in terms of overflowing beds, people in the icu. it's a very different time not only for the tools we have but also for how many people are actually getting very sick. dan: thanks, as always. see you soon.

many say they would like to see a mandatory retirement age. the poll was conducted just weeks after the court issued high-profile rulings, including on abortion rights and done rights as well. no surprise. i will start with you, mike, people are examining how the supreme court works given a couple of controversial rulings. but what do you think? life terms? is that viable? mike: in my mind, it's not. my mind was made up well before the recent events. i understand what the founding fathers did with the presidency because they did not want him to become a king but all branches of the government should have some kind of limits on them. look at how corrupt congress is because of the money that is thrown their way -- i can't think of the term, but you understand what i'm saying and you wonder why they don't have term limits? why doesn't the supreme court have term limits? other branches of the government have term limits.
