investigating the deadly capitol attack shows what the committee says was former president trump's reluctance to condemn his supporters in a speech 24 hours after they breached the capitol. the committee showing the original draft of trump's prerecorded message on january 7th. lines that would have directed the department of justice to prosecute rioters appearing crossed out. >> as you can see throughout the document, there are lines crossed out. there are some words added in. do you recognize the handwriting? >> it looks like my father's handwriting. >> one of trump's most loyal aides, johnny mcentee, testified the former president's son-in-law and senior adviser jared kushner wanted someone to, quote, nudge trump to give the speech. >> was the implication that the president was in some ways reluctant to give that speech? >> yeah. >> reporter: the committee promising more hearings

in september all while the department of justice conducts its own wide-ranging investigation. sources confirming to abc news that marc short, the former chief of staff to vice president mike live pence and greg jacob, pence's former chief counsel appeared before a federal grand jury investigating january 6th. short confirming he was subpoenaed by the grand jury in an interview with abc newslive. >> if the mob had gotten closer to the vice president, i do think there would have been a massacre in the capitol that day. >> reporter: short now the highest ranking trump white house known to have cooperated in that department of justice investigation. all of this as the january 6th committee hearings are putting new pressure on attorney general merrick garland to bring criminal charges against trump or his allies for their attempts to overturn the 2020 election. garland has said, quote, no person is above the law. andrew, mona. >> all right, jay, thank you. and breaking overnight in uvalde, texas, the school district has suspended the principal of robb elementary

school where 19 children and 2 teachers were gunned down. mandy gutierrez was placed on leave with pay after an investigation found that she was aware of security problems at te school but failed to fix them. the shooter entered the building through an unlocked door. the board also announced the first day of school will be pushed back to september 6th with new security measures in place. >> as we move through this summer, we are making considerable ground on improving and hardening our campuses. there's also the matter of bringing in portables and setting those up with wi-fi, intercom, all those pieces that must be necessary. these will not be ready for our original august 15th first day of school. >> meanwhile, school district police chief pete arrendondo remains on unpaid administrative leave. he's accused of botching the response to the shooting. the district has recommended he be fired.

staying in texas, fire crews were put to the test outside dallas as flames destroyed or damaged more than two dozen homes. the hot, dry conditions there mirrored the severe weather in other parts of the country. this morning, the extreme heat blanketing much of the country is drastically increasing the wildfire risk. this small grass fire outside dallas quickly spread monday destroying at least nine homes and damaging more than 15. the temperature in the area was 104 at the time. in california, more than 2,500 firefighters are battling the oak fire, the state's largest wildfire of the year burning more than 17,000 acres so far. >> fire was coming quickly. i have two children. >> the oak fire has forced more than 6,000 people to evacuate. this is the third wildfire in the area in just the past two weeks. ginger zee is there. >> we are in exceptional drought, the highest level.

a megadrought that absolutely has to do with why these fuels burn so quickly in a fire like the oak fire, but you can't leave out climate change. a recent study says by the year 2050 we could see more uncontrolled extreme wildfires up to 30% all due to climate change. >> reporter: in massachusetts the town of pembroke has issued emergency water restrictions threatening residents with fines if they don't immediately cease using unnecessary water in the wake of severely low water levels following the heat wave. according to the u.s. drought monitor, almost all of massachusetts is experiencing abnormally dry or moderate drought conditions. in other parts of the northeast severe storms put an end to the record-breaking heat wave. the torrential rain flooding some streets in new york city. this time lapse shows the storm moving in and cameras capturing the moment the empire state building was struck by lightning. now the typically mild pacific northwest is bracing for a heat wave. a closer look at the forecast coming up in a few minutes.

jared kushner says he was treated for thyroid cancer while serving in the white house. kushner, former president trump's son-in-law and adviser, revealed the diagnosis in his upcoming memoir saying he underwent surgery in 2019. in an excerpt by "the new york times," he says he only shared the information with his wife and a few others. he didn't even tell the president but trump out found out anyway. president biden is hoping to return by the end of the week and his doctor says his covid symptoms have almost completely resolved and the president told reporters he had two full nights of sleep and is feeling great and posted this photo taking calls on the white house balcony alongside his german shepherd commander. now to the warning from walmart. the world's largest retailer is slashing its profit forecast for the year. it comes days before the release of critical data which could show america's economy in a recession. this morning, walmart is raising fears about inflation in america lowering its profit

outlook for the rest of the year saying prices on food and gas are forcing shoppers to cut back on general items, particularly clothing, which carry higher profit margins. shares of walmart fell 10% yesterday. the company's former ceo says walmart's move to lower its profit outlook midquarter is rare. >> i know we did it once when i was there, and i've been gone for a long time, so, you know, an interperiod warning like that is very uncommon for walmart. >> the federal reserve is set to raise the cost of borrowing again tomorrow in an attempt to slow the economy down to fight inflation. the fed is expected to increase interest rates 0.75 point similar to last month and the commerce department will release a report which could show the economy shrinking for a second consecutive quarter generally understood to be a recession. >> the rule of thumb, two straight quarters of negative growth equals a recession, but the white house doesn't want to use the "r" word, officials pointing to the jobs market which remains historically

strong and the president saying god willing, i dent think we'll see a recession. >> reporter: one bright side is dropping gas prices now at an average of $4.35 a gallon, 55 cents cheaper from one month ago. president biden and the white house are downplaying recession fears. >> my hope is we go from this rapid growth to a steady growth and so we'll see some coming down, but i don't think we're going to, god willing, i don't think we'll see a recession. >> reporter: meanwhile, as the country's pilot shortage fuels flight cancellation, senator lindsey graham is bringing up legislation that would raise the mandatory retirement age for commercial airliners to 67 from 65. pilot unions argue against raising the age limit saying it will only increase costs and introduce unnecessary risks. the faa has not commented on the bill. ukrainian troops are aiming to do a major counter offensive aimed at kherson, the first
