>> if the mob had gotten closer to the vice president, i do think there would have been a massacre in the capitol that day. >> reporter: both have also spoken to the january 6th committee. lawmakers now releasing this new video. they say it shows evidence the former president was reluctant to condemn his supporters who stormed the capitol. committee revealing this image of a draft of trump's remarks on january 7th. the day after the insurrection. phrases crossed out. handwritten edits added in. >> do you recognize the handwriting? >> it looks like my father's handwriting. >> reporter: strike-throughs on lines calling for swift and firm legal consequences and for the justice department to prosecute all law breakers to the fullest extent of the law. his son-in-law and adviser jared kushner asked why. >> do you know why he wanted that crossed out? >> i don't know. >> he also has crossed out, i want to be very clear, you do not represent me. you do not represent our movement.

do you know why he crossed that language out of the statement? >> i don't know. >> reporter: and as the committee brings forward new evidence, president biden delivering a sharp rebuke of his predecessor. >> for three hours, the defeated former president of the united states watched it all happen as he sat in the comfort of the private dining room next to the oval office. >> reporter: biden insisting the nation relied on law enforcement to save our democracy. >> while he was doing that, brave law enforcement officers were subject to the medieval hell for three hours dripping in blood surrounded by carnage. face-to-face with the crazed mob that believed the lies of the defeated president. the police were heroes that day. donald trump lacked the courage to act. >> reporter: and trump is expected to be in washington today for the first time since leaving office. he is scheduled to speak to a conservative group and he won't be the only republican in town. his own vice president mike pence will be here as well speaking to a separate group.

the two pitching very different irections for the future of the republican party, george. >> and rachel, there are also new developments in that investigation in georgia into election interference. >> reporter: yes. this is a snag for the district attorney in georgia who was hoping to speak with the state senator burt jones who's also running for lieutenant governor for his alleged role in trying to reverse the state's election results. well, turns out, a superior court judge said there is a conflict of interest because the prosecutor donated to the campaign, even held a fundraiser for his political opponent. this morning our affiliate wsb is reporting brian kemp has spoken to that grand jury. george? > rachel scott, thanks very much. michael? we turn now to breaking news on the uvalde school shooting investigation. the robb elementary school principal has now been suspended. mireya villarreal is in dallas. and, mireya, the administrator, she was aware of the existing security issues at the school prior to the shooting?

>> reporter: hey, good morning, michael. yeah, overnight, we were able to confirm with the attorney for mandy gutierrez that she has been put on administrative leave with pay, and that comes after an investigation found she, along with other administrators, did know that there were maintenance issues at the school and they did nothing to fix them. now, this news comes on the heels of that scathing investigative report that was released by the state along with video just last week. the report details maintenance problems at the school that the administration was aware of including a broken door lock for room 111 that the shooter first entered. now, gutierrez is the second district employee to be put on leave. pete arrendondo was the first. he's on administrative leave but without pay. the district did not release further details about this latest development or put out a statement. but late last night i was able to get in touch with one of the family members that have been affected by this shooting. they tell me this is a step in the right direction, but there is still a lot more to do in this case. the start of school set for september 6th. michael?

>> still a lot to do as you said. mireya, thank you. robin? now to the explosive wildfire near yosemite national park, burning more than 17,000 acres. 3,000 structures are still threatened, but firefighters are making headway. ginger is on the scene again for us this morning in california. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this is the type of fire that annihilates homes. that's a twisted roof behind me. it just shreds and tangles glass like this from the window. now, we were trying to show you a different house this morning but the area we were in had air quality over 500 and we measured it with this instrument. we're still 200 which is close to that unhealthy range but smoke is reaching all the way to the oregon state line. overnight, california's oak fire still growing. ervaion orate's largest fire of the rapidly spreading fire incinerating at least 21 structures. homes included while thousands more remain in jeopardy.

>> fuel is on the ground. >> reporter: cal fire taking us to the front lines where more than 17,000 acres have already burned. that whole hillside, for example, was full, like torched. there are tree stumps and that's it. around the clock more than 2,500 firefighters are battling this blaze while working in intense heat and steep terrain. planes dropping retardant trying to stop the spread from the air. as the flames climb this hill, they get higher and higher and the firefighters have actually put in a dozer line where you can see that dirt there. that should stop the flames before it gets any higher. in this megadrought the dry vegetation is ripe for fires to rip through. cal fire says that this area hasn't burned in a century. >> and why is this place unique and why is this happening now? >> this place is unique in the sense that this was devastated by the drought and it had bark beetle infestation and that bark beetle infestation created tons and tons of available fuel, dead trees everywhere. >> reporter: in texas, a huge

grass fire destroying at least two dozen homes in a dallas suburb and conditions incredibly dry there too. the fire is believed to have ignited when crews cutting grass in a field possibly struck a metal object causing sparks to fly and spread. the challenge here, of course, with the firefighting is the heat will be in the mid-90s again. fresno could make it to 102. mount shasta, yesterday, broke a record at 100. medford could do 107 again and up to yakima, keep an eye on that heat. also, want to mention the heat expands all the way to texas and oklahoma. arkansas, western mississippi, those advisories and excessive heat warnings. and then this morning, st. louis, missouri, is in a flash flood emergency. we'll be telling you more about that. they've had more than seven inches of rain in just five hours. we will bring you the latest pictures and so much more in a bit. >> so many impacted by the elements. okay, thank you, ginger. george? now to the latest on the war in ukraine. officials are planning a major

new counteroffensive to retake a key port city under russian control for months. senior foreign correspondent ian pannell has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, ukraine fighting back. signs of mounting preparations for a major counteroffensive to retake the south. ukrainian officials say they plan to liberate kherson, a city quickly seized by russia early in the war and the only one occupied outside the donbas region in the east. president zelenskyy saying the occupiers have been trying to establish a foothold there. how did it help them? the ukrainian armed forces are moving into the region step by step. the ukrainians have been targeting key bridges into the city, vital supply lines for the russians. the ukrainians repeatedly striking them reportedly with the help of american-made himars. video circulating online shows damage to this bridge near kherson. ukrainian officials say they carried out the attack claiming to lay the groundwork for a much larger offensive. this as russia escalates its goals. no longer limited to just the eastern donbas, but into the

heart of kyiv. moscow's top diplomat for russia now saying their aim is to overthrow the government and oust president zelenskyy. >> we will certainly help ukrainian people to get rid of the regime which is absolutely anti-people and anti-historical. >> reporter: well, as you know, lavrov is an old hand at giving out these blood curdling threats. what's striking about this one is he goes further than the original war goals. though it may seem deluded, it also is a reminder that russia will not relent until it's brought ukraine under control and that it has no interest at all in making peace. george? >> that certainly seems clear right now. ian pannell, thanks. michael? now to the airport shooting scare at dallas love field airport after a woman opened fire monday. the faa called a ground stop that led to hundreds of delays and cancellations. gio benitez has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: this morning, an urgent investigation after a woman opened fire inside dallas love field airport.

>> code blue at dallas love field. somebody's shooting. >> reporter: no one was hurt, but confusion and hysteria erupted inside the southwest airlines terminal. passengers inside seen crouching down low behind seats for safety after shots rang out. police say 37-year-old suspect portia odufuwa, seen here from a previous arrest, shot off multiple rounds apparently at the ceiling. >> i just heard the shots. it was like 10 to 12 shots. >> reporter: according to officials, an officer on scene shooting the woman in the lower extremities. >> keep moving across the skywalk. >> reporter: as officers and airport officials evacuated the building -- >> there was just a mad scramble. people just got up and tore out of this place. >> reporter: -- the shooter was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital. and though the incident took place in the ticketing area, flights were suspended for hours and thousands of passengers were forced to leave the secured area and be rescreened. >> i just want to make it home

to my kids, but i'm grateful i'm alive. >> reporter: and according to court documents, the suspect was found incompetent to stand trial just last year after being accused of filing a false report. those same documents also say that she failed to complete court-ordered therapy. so the big question this morning, how was she able to buy a gun? michael? >> great question there, thank you, gio. robin? michael, now to the economy and a possible sign of trouble ahead. rising prices are having a big impact on shoppers and big companies like walmart are getting hit hard. our chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis is here with what shoppers can expect. good morning, rebecca. >> good morning to you, robin. american consumers are being forced to cut back because of soaring food and fuel prices. that is the most important takeaway from walmart's earnings overnight. walmart, which is one of the largest employers in the country with about 1.6 million workers is also the biggest grocer in the u.s. and considered a bellwether for our economy and the company's ceo specifically cited double-digit food

lasted about 40 minutes and we did hear from another witness for the defense. but, robin, the real moment from inside that courtroom today was brittney's message for her wife. this morning, brittney griner seen handcuffed as she's led into a russian court, locked into a steel white cage. she holds up a clear plastic envelope with two photos of her wife cherelle. our producer inside that courtroom talking to brittney through the cell bars. >> do you want to say something to cherelle? >> good luck on the bar exam. >> how do you feel? do you have any complaints? >> no, no complaints. just waiting patiently. >> reporter: griner, a two-time olympic gold medalist, was visiting russia to play basketball in the off-season when she was detained in mid-february at a moscow airport after vape canisters containing cannabis oil were found in her luggage. the biden administration is under pressure to secure her release.

now to a swimmer's frightening encounter with a seal all caught on camera. the endangered monk seal was protecting its pup when it went after the woman in the waters off of hawaii. eva pilgrim joins us with that. good morning, eva. >> reporter: good morning, michael. authorities say she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. this woman was swimming laps in the ocean when she got caught between a momma seal and her pup. > oh! >> reporter: a terrifying camera. >> oh! >> reporter: a hawaiian monk seal known as rocky who recently gave birth chasing a swimmer who got too close to her pup and at one point the momma seal pulled the woman down into the water biting her. >> get out! get out! >> reporter: according to officials, the swimmer's husband recorded this video showing the 60-year-old elementary schoolteacher swimming off in the distance when the seals suddenly head her way.

he says due to her swim cap she couldn't see them or hear the shouts until it was too late. eventually pulled to safety by a canoeist. >> i have never in my life seen something like that. the biggest hero is the guy who came with his outrigger canoe, risking his own health. >> reporter: but the danger was not over. >> get her out of the way. >> reporter: as they got to shore rocky coming back toward the woman. a small group rushing her out of the water onto the sand. >> it was a brutal attack. it was brutal. it was rough to watch. she -- at one point rocky's mouth i think got ahold of her head and she was trying to splash and get away. >> reporter: hawaiian marine animal response has been monitoring rocky and her 2-week-old pup. there's fencing and signs up to tell everyone to stay at least 150 feet away. >> hawaiian monk seals especially a mom with a pup can be aggressive towards people like any wild animal. she is trying to protect her pup. so we always want to give them

we are back with our "gma" cover story and today's economy it can pay to switch jobs and a story we saw in "the wall street journal" lays out what to think about before you leave the job you have. rebecca jarvis is back with details. good to see you again, rebecca. tell us about the research. >> this is very interesting, what the atlanta fed recently found is that it pays to switch jobs or it has paid to switch jobs. people who stayed at the same company earned about 4.7% more in raises whereas those who quit and switched jobs earned 6.4% more and workers aged 34 and under are more likely to switch but t me sure there e is a big asterisk ther >> all right. so right now i'm thinking about switching my job, which i am not. >> no! [ laughter ] >> let's make that clear. >> i was going to say which one?

is this big asterisk here because if you leave a job, a number of companies have first in/first out policies meaning the people who are most recently in are also the people if there's a recession, if there are layoffs, the people who are out. it's a really big consideration. also, if you're going to a place and you're going to be paid more money than the peers, that also makes you expensive. so if there's a recession, again, when they take a look at you versus other people, suddenly you could be the person who is most likely to be cut. >> put it all together. what's the most important thing to think about if you're considering switching jobs? >> the first thing you should do if you're considering switching jobs is to ask yourself why. are you leaving purely because of money or is it a bigger question? if it's only because the money there's a lot of conversations you can have internally with your managers about how to make things better. there might be other perks, flexibility, there's also good will. you have to remember when you stay at a company for a long

what we don't want, speed up aging. >> we're being positive here and finding things we can. >> this is advice for every age. let's go to specifics, shall we? >> 40s. >> in our 40s, in addition to what we just talked about, we really see vision changes. we see skin changes like readers or wrinkles. so the foods to focus on here are ace food, vitamin a, c and e. spinach which has vitamin a for vision. i have strawberries which has vitamin c for collagen production in our skin and sunflower seeds for vitamin e which is very protective of our skin. so you do all that plus you really give yourself an extra ace boost. >> all right. now moving to the 50s is when we really start to see some changes. michael! >> yes. >> just pay attention, michael. >> yes, good. you know, hormone shifts are happening and you really do see changes. what do you focus on, b vitamins are really the key here. b vitamins take the food we eat
