politicized storm. it appears she has no intention of resigning, but the question remains is she elected. from here until november, there will be many influencers. among them, the teachers union and another group has surfaced. not everyone is standing behind school board member and shoe. providers are asking her to resign. >> to disrespect families like that and make decisions for over 50,000 students and families, someone like that cannot be in that position. >> even the powerful api council has criticized her comments. it is the coalition of nonprofits in the asian community. but she still enjoys the support of supervisor gordon mar and mayor london breed, who appointed her. the controversy stems from her statement saying one of the

biggest challenges to improving academic outcomes is the lack of family support for students in the black and brown communities. she's apologize, referring to her comments as a teachable moment, but she will not be endorsed by the united educators of san francisco. when it comes to winning a seat on the school board, endorsements matter. especially when it comes from them, the teachers union. what you may not know is a few years ago, the teachers union created cope, which stands for committee on political education. the political arm of the union and what they say is many times followed by the voters. in 2020, cope endorsed jenny lam, mark sanchez, kevin bogus, and matt alexander. they won that year and are still on the board. the pandemic brought more awareness about who occupies the seats. >> coming out of the pandemic with distance learning, more people started to pay more attention to schools and the board of education.

more so than any other time in history. rex out of the pandemic came a new group of parents. >> the problem i see was the vacuum of parent voices missing from the conversation. sf parent coalition and action, we are here to do our own analysis and provide our own recommendation of school board candidates. >> for the next school board election, that new group of parents will have a candidate forum, town halls, and a voter guide to inform the public. so far they have not said whether or not they will endorse her. a lot of changes after the pandemic. >> we will talk more about that. even though it is a fairly large district with families in the public school system, there has not been a great deal of interest for some time in the school board until recently. the question is why? >> i think because there were a lot of things discussed before the pandemic that were of little

interest to a lot of voters. everything changed when people with kids and those without children were affected by the proposal to change the name of schools covering the historic murals at george washington high school. the admissions controversy, keeping students at home learning. everyone had something to say about those issues. that is when people in san francisco started paying attention. >> the less mundane things stuck out. >> the reward leading to an arrest in the fatal shooting of an oakland resident has increased to $20,000. it is not the only recent incident. as unser hudson explains, members of the community are calling for more police patrols and effective investigations. >> we are not ok. the desperation and anger in our communities is growing by the day. >> she's the executive director

of the oakland chamber of commerce. she joined other leaders calling for justice for patrick fong. he was fatally shot two weeks ago as he was starting work as a ride-share driver. >> we are hoping we can find ways so they are more resources to prevent crimes from happening. >> karl 10 is the president of the chinatown chamber of commerce. a reward for information leading to the arrest is $10,000. he believes more police patrols must be part of the solution. the police chief announced a new liaison officer, fluent in vietnamese, to patrol middle saigon. >> we are also in discussions with the business prepared to provide us a substation for the officer to be housed and work directly with that community. >> a local business owner has other concerns. especially with more surveillance footage, he says there needs to be investigations. >> until someone is caught, this

will continue. you will see more press conferences and victims, more armed robberies. >> chief armstrong insists in a big city like oakland, his department needs more funding to tackle crime. >> it takes people to do work. the more crime we have, the more video, as for investigators to follow-up. > he says there needs to be police reform and for critics to talk about over policing. he says right now, more police equals public safety. >> in the city of oakland, i would say the majority of people, they would rather see more police on the street keeping people safe. >> knew details tonight. the january 6 select committee plans to embark on another fact-finding phase until a new round of hearings in september. former trump secretary of state mike pompeo is in talks to give closed-door testimony. cassidy hutchinson earlier

testified that she heard an exchange between mike pompeo and trump's former white house chief of staff centering on cabinet member conversations about possibly invoking the 25th amendment to remove trump from office. other possible witnesses include ginni thomas, the wife of supreme court justice clarence thomas. >> we certainly hope she will come in voluntarily, but the committee is prepared to contemplate a subpoena if she does not. >> liz cheney said the committee has not decided whether they will make criminal referrals of president trump. >> president biden taking a new step recovering from covid. the white house announced the president is able to get back to his regular exercise routine. he's almost symptom-free and his vital signs are normal. the president said he tested positive for covid last thursday. he met virtually with representatives from sk group about the plans to boost the workforce in the u.s.

>> new developments with monkeypox. napa county announced its first probable case today. the person preliminarily tested positive after receiving medical care. they are in isolation. the health department is following up with people who may have had close contact with this person. >> nearly one million californians face long-term health problems in the form of unsafe drinking water. it is according to a report from the state auditor who said the state agency with the power to fix the problem lacks urgency to fix it. zach fuentes has the details. >> water and the lack of it has long been a topic in california. now a new report by the state auditor finds many accessing what water we do have could be harmed by it. the state water resources control board identified more than 370 failed water systems in the state. that means systems are going above the same level -- safe level of contaminants. >> in the water is too

saturated, it becomes unsafe to drink. sometimes it could be safe to wash with or irrigate, or if it is unsafe to drink, it is unsafe for public health. >> including liver and kidney damage and cancer risk. san mateo, napa and sonoma county are impacted. some counties in the central valley have more than 100,000. >> it is communities that are the breadbasket of california. if they are sick, our agricultural economy goes out the door. >> the state water lacks urgency to fix the failing water systems. they have grants and low interest rate loans to help those impacted, but the board is not doing enough outreach and the application process is too slow. >> it used to take about 17 months in 2017. now it is taking nearly twice as long. nearly three months in 2021. >> the waterboard gave us a statement in response. they said ensuring access to safe water is a priority and pointed to action they have taken. >> we provided 84% more grant

up. hundreds across west county. and nobody could figure it out. >> he posted a $500 reward on sunday. for anyone to identify what the sound was and where it was coming from. tips started rolling in, and t2 came from people -- two came from people attending a party in richmond. it led the mayor to this empty industrial lot in the middle of nowhere near richmond parkway. you can still see signs of the now cleaned up party left the hind. beer cans, bottle cans, and speaker wires a few of the only signs left that was for the most part kept under wraps. the mayor said it was a party with electro-funk style music. >> but apparently, it is a cultural thing where people get a pickup truck and high-powered sound equipment.

and they come together in some kind of a venue and play all of the stuff at once. >> we found a flyer for the event online which appeared to be in portuguese. we tracked down a man who is the father of the organizer. he said the whole thing was his son's 20th birthday party. >> everything they did was illegal. it is actually punishable as a misdemeanor, which is a $1000 fine or six month in jail. >> i spoke with the birthday boy's dad who sent his son straight to city hall to talk with the mayor directly once he heard what happened. the mayor's office confirms they did come down, but the mayor was busy so they did not meet. we called richmond police department to see if the young men might be facing any charges. lena howland, abc7 news. >> after the break, 96 tons of trash collected from the massive great pacific garbage patch and being offloaded in the bay area.

it is because the micro plastics hamper the ocean's ability and oceans cycle to sequester carbon. >> it was stuffed with some 96 tons, being offloaded with a specific goal, to make sure the plastic components are up cycled into materials that will never find their way back into the ocean. >> they can be turned into aggregate for road construction, retaining walls and highways, that sort of stuff. stuff that will be sequestered and durable. >> the mission is the latest launched by the ocean voyages and student, leading research of collecting and disposing of ocean waste. they said the debris patch covers an area roughly the distance from california to texas. while the effects are floating away, believes concerns growing in the bay area. >> more awareness of people of

camera. you may have noticed this if you were outside. the haze is above the marine layer. just the gray issue. -- grayish hugh. we see some hazy conditions due to the smoke from the oak fire. an air quality advisory remains up through tomorrow. good air quality for the entire bay area, the upper parts of the atmosphere is what we are dealing with. good to moderate air quality locally. as we check out what it looks like near the fire zone, yosemite is unhealthy, it is red , parts of the tahoe area in good to moderate. smoke near the surface. you will notice the heavy concentration of smoke will remain south of lake tahoe through tomorrow night. we are going to switch to another computer model in the upper layers of the atmosphere. notice the smoke and the haze start to move in our direction, especially tomorrow. we might see some increasing

haze in our skies due to the winds in the upper parts of the atmosphere. this area of low pressure spinning off the coast. monsoon moisture getting drawn up into the sierra nevada. they are seeing thunderstorms. that will remain there. we have a stable pattern with fog near the coast. this morning, there were thunderstorms east of the bay area that did not quite make it to our region. from the walnut creek camera, we see sunshine as we look at temperatures. 60 degrees in san francisco. 66 in oakland. santa clara. 59 in half moon bay. marine layer coming in. it will make its move quickly. 74 in santa rosa. 85 in fairfield. san jose camera showing blue skies over the shark. a clouds, fog, patchy drizzle. warm weather continues tomorrow afternoon with minor daily fluctuations true the weekend. this is where the action will

remain tomorrow morning. you may see some drizzle like we did along the coast the last few mornings. and right through the afternoon and evening, that is where the monsoon moisture stays. hopefully if the model is right, there is some wedding rain over the next seven days. that should help, at least with the fires burning in our state. not a lot of rain expected generally under .15. 60's in the morning. watch out for the fog and drizzle. afternoon highs anywhere from the low 60's to the low 90's. hazy skies expected. the accuweather 7 day forecast. it will be mild and warm. the haze continuing into thursday. warmer on friday. breezier and cooler for the weekend with more clouds coming in for the second half of your weekend. >> football is back as the 49ers opened training camp in santa clara. all eyes are on trey lance as he takes a range as their new quarterback.

he replaces jimmy garoppolo, who nearly took the team to the super bowl last season. the general manager met with him earlier today. they made it clear lance is the guy and his days as 49er quarterback are over. >> we have to talk to both of us, we cut up with a lot of stuff. if we are all on the same page. jimmy understands where we are at, we understand where we are at. i cannot tell you how appreciative i have been. i think -- we knew the move we made the year before. he did a helluva job coming to camp and taking this close to the super bowl. but we have moved on for starting camp this way. he would have been traded if the surgery did not happen. >> the 40 and aris first game of the preseason is august 12 at home against the packers. we'
