devastating flooding in kentucky, the scope of the disaster becoming more clear as floodwaters begin to recede. >> homes and businesses destroyed. rescue crews desperately searching for hundreds of people who are still unaccounted for. at least 16 people, including children, already losing their lives. and that number is expected to rise. >> and flood ravaged communities facing more rain. let's go there in kentucky with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as these floodwaters are beginning to recede, we're getting a clearer image of the damage, a better idea of how powerful and forceful the floodwaters were. this wrcreek, up and down the creek, you can find cars littering the waterway. cars that were just picked up and washed away. there are trees and furniture, there's toys and trash all up and down this creek. we've seen trailers and garages and sheds, homes that were picked up off their foundation,

ripped off the foundation and washed away. the death toll currently sitting at 16, but the governor here, andy beshear, expects that number to continue to climb, considering the dozens and dzens of people throughout the state are still missing. six of those killed were children, including four siblings. 300 people have been rescued from floodwaters so far. at least 100 saved by air. this morning more than 330 more people displaced and staying in shelters. the flooding stretching into virginia and west virginia, neighboring states. declarations of emergencies have been called in both of those states. the president has approved a disaster declaration clearing the way for federal support and assistance to the region and the governor here asking for donations, g spare.g anyone can artbreakingtoesfe who didtavot wondering, what do we do next. >> sadly, it will take months to rebuild and pick up the pieces.

thank you. we want to turn to the economy. a new report showing consumer spending beat expectations in june, but this comes as inflation surges amid growing fears about a possible recession. abc's economics correspondent is here with the latest. deirdre, good morning. >> we saw the government report showing u.s. consumer spending increasing more than forecast as americans paid more in june for goods and services. many say, though, this isn't the bright spot that it looks like, since americans are more or less being forced to spend more on basics as prices rise. also on friday, another key measure of inflation that the fed watches closely, the pce, set a fresh 40-year high. these data points are part of the push and pull in the agument as to whether or not we're in a recession. in addition, concerns about inflation and how aggressive the fed has to be to manage it, events such as the war in ukraine disrupting various idustries are two big x factors.

on the other hand, optimists say we're not in a recession, according to earnings posted this week, apple and amazon doing better than forecast, showing that many parts of corporate america are strong and likely to keep hiring, reinforcing the labor market's strength. we are going to get another piece of the puzzle on friday, the july employment report. economists forecast 250,000 jobs will be added to the u.s. economy, so that would be fewer than we saw in june and the prior few months, but still solid growth in the labor market. if that number comes in much worse, there will be more and more people who say, in fact, that we are going in the wrong direction. so we'll just be waiting for that number on friday morning. >> interesting that you said that corporate is doing very well. >> some companies are doing extremely well. coming up in our morning menu, those tax fraud alegations against shakira, facing a potential eight-year prison sentence. what the superstar's team is

batter. then i actually have a waffle cone maker. you can also get a pizelle maker. it is going to create that nice flat, thin layer that we're all looking for with our nice crunchy cones. it's malleable right now and i have acrylic neighbors, so i can move it straight from there. otherwise, you can use a tong. you can use it into a taco holder. this is what you use for just your regular tacos on taco tuesday when you're having dinner and that is going to actually keep its shape. it's crazy, it will hold on to that and harden up. that's how you create the shell. >> maria, we've got to ask you about the ice cream. how does that get into the shell? >> all right. i have a trick. i actually take some ice cream, i soften it and put it into a plastic bag. i just cut off the tip and then i smoosh it around a little bit

so it softens too and you actually pour it into the cone, like you can see here. and then i would actually put the waffle cone taco shell into the freezer because you want it to be nice and hard for the dipping. >> it wouldn't be a choco taco without the chocolate so how do we finish this off? >> i know, listen, i love these shells but the taco sets it off. you take your ice cold shell and then you dip into this chocolate so i have melted chocolate and coconut to create a chocolate shell that will harden up. then you just add your toppings. oh, my gosh, it's the best. get your kids involved and then you can actually just dip the shell too even if you don't dip the full thing like you guys have in front of you. you can actually just dip the top part of it. as long as you have some chocolate on there, that works for me. >> maria, i was skeptical at first, but it's very good. this is now my second choco taco

on the peninsula, a brutal robbery caught on camera. >> hey! liz: this happened thursday on skyline drive. the robber struck the victim with a firea wathe robber got away in a red windows. investigators say the 71-year-old victim was treated at the scene but did not go to the hospital. the victim's family tells abc 7 news they believe they were followed from a bank. a $75,000 reward is being offered in a 2016 homicide in the tenderloin. they suspect the killer shot 24-year-old mitchell warren near paul cook. police have images from several angles, one showing the suspect with the giants cap and dark sweatshirt with the word fringe on the back. they have not suppressed a motive, but they say mitchell warren had an argument with the gunman. let's get a check of the forecast. lisa: lots of cloud cover in the
