this is this seen saturday in san francisco's soma district, sundays up your alley event, and top of mind is monkeypox. >> the challenge is not having a quick response from government agencies and supply of the vaccine. tara: he is owner of the san francisco eagle bar and says frustrations are mounting. >> we definitely feel like this could have been taken care of easily. tara: steve floyd and larry jackson are visiting from portland, maine. >> i contacted my doctor and said, we are coming to san francisco, is there a possibility we could get a vaccination? he said no. tara: the couple has been together for 30 years and didn't want to miss out on this year's event. >> we always wanted to go to folsom. it's a fun event. tara: they are already putting

safety precautions into action. >> we are really trying to avoid contact with other people. it's fun and stuff, but we stayed in the upper skirts of that. tara: angel is the director of the nonprofit putting on the event, and they have been working closely with the department. -- department of public health. >> we are putting up banners that take you to the department of public health informational website. tara: they've been filling their social media feeds with messaging, letting people know how to stay safe, and while vaccines won't be available, testing will be. >> we will offer monkeypox testing tomorrow. tara: a little relief for those trying to stay safe, buthet enog again for the vaccine. >> it is frustrating. it seems like a simple solution.

i hope they ramp it up quickly. tara: as for the vaccine doses, san francisco public health officials have requested 35,000 doses. 4500 are expected this week, which will bring the total number of shots to roughly 12,000. a lot of ground to make up. j.r.: thank you for that report. new york city has declared monkeypox a public health emergency as positive cases continue to soar. the city has over 1200 cases. most were found in men, which comes two days after san francisco was the first city in the country to declare an emergency. new york mayor eric adams says approximately 150,000 residents are at risk of being infected. new york state has received 100,000 doses of the monkeypox vaccine.

we have everything you need to know about monkeypox including vaccines and treatment. developing out of northern california where another wildfire has erected, the mckinney fire near the oregon border has burned more than 30,000 acres and destroyed many homes. containment numbers have gone from 0% to 1% in the last few hours, and the popular pacific crest trail has been closed in spots. i talked with a hiker who was stranded earlier this evening. devastating fire images coming from northern california close to the oregon border where the mckinney fire has exploded in size. >> really erratic wind from the start of the incident until now. j.r.: homes have been destroyed

and evacuations are in place. it's not just homeowners being put in life-threatening situations. >> things are looking pretty not great. it is smoky. tara: catherine of san francisco was hiking the pacific crest trail and was stranded in etna, california with dozens of hikers when we spoke on the phone with her. >> i saw a big plume of smoke, and said, that's not good. i knew the fire was close. tara: because of these flames and intense smoke, the pacific coast trail was closed all the way to ashland, oregon as flames tore through parts of the national forest. crews try to get a handle on the situation. >> people are having to come to the highway i hitched off of because it was so bad.

we started to see smoke, and it was settling in the valleys, and we were like, it's time to get out of here. j.r.: when we learned of her situation, we posted it on our facebook page. dozens of viewers responded with possible solutions. catherine tells me that she and four other hikers received a ride to ashland, oregon. she is grateful for all the messages she received, but it is extremely smoky where she is. the oak fire in mariposa county had been the largest wildfire in the state this year. it has burned over 19,000 acres since starting last friday. containment continues to edge up with calfire reporting it is 59% contained. this fire has been destroying over 150 buildings, including several houses. calfire hopes to have the oak

fire contained by next week. tonight marks the 20th anniversary of the yearly california firefighters memorial ceremony in sacramento, the first time the ceremony has been held for three years since the pandemic. > today, we are renewing this noble tradition of recognizing those who gave their lives in the service of california. j.r.: fallen firefighters were honored at the convention center. half of firefighters died to fire-related cancer. two were lost to violence. >> jason andrew cortez, san francisco. >> after the ceremony, there was a procession to the memorial wall. it pays tribute to 1400 firefighters who have died in the line of duty.

a superior court judge said in a tentative ruling that the university could move forward with its controversial plan. work on the site can begin when a judge issues a written order expected next week. preservationists stopped -- sued to stop uc berkeley to build a dorm for students and on housed people. they say the university has other properties they could use for student housing. building a better bay area with a focus on the environment. a call for action against plastic and e-commerce. state senator scott weiner joined environmentalists and community leadersmpag onlin ret. the group spoke out in support of a bill that requires online retailers to reduce plastic packaging materials.

you can see the clouds thickening in the sky over the bay. these are our forecast futures. clouds will continue to increase. we will see increasing clouds and humidity. tomorrow, the pattern continues and a chance of showers, may be an isolated thunderstorm or two. starting at midnight, notice the clouds and moisture flowing up from the south. there will be an outbreak of showers over the sierra and into the central valley, and it's possible a shower or two coul develop into the bay area, although more likely to the east and southeast. monday afternoon, pretty much the same picture, a chance of instability in the atmosphere, producing showers and a be an isolated thunderstorm or two, but the chance is not great.

j.r.: a bay area man lost $1.2 million in a cryptocurrency scam and is not alone. federal investigators say cases of the fraud known as pig butchering our growing across california specifically targeting asian americans in silicon valley. stephanie sierra spoke with the u.s. secret service about the international investigation that started in san francisco. stephanie: it is a $1 million mistake that is draining the bank accounts of silicon valley workers. >> i was shaking.

stephanie: investigators say anyone could be a victim. >> the scheme is effective. stephanie: for one man, and ended in the financial ruin. we altered his voice to protect his identity. he said it started last october on whatsapp. >> someone approached me. i thought it was my old colleague. she gained my trust. stephanie: the woman called herself jessica. she messaged him every day. she introduced him to cryptocurrency as a way to help with funeral costs for his dying father. cy did not tell his family. stephanie: i had an accounting background so i was being careful. i started with $5,000 just to see how it is. stephanie: he sent the money from his bank to a legitimate crypto trading site. the funds went to a platform

jessica sent him to make the trades. four days after his father passed away, he lost his first $500,000. > i still believed it was real. she encouraged me to find more capital to make it back. stephanie: cy said his balance was -65,000 dollars, but was able to take out a loan for $200,000 and liquidated mutual funds. > on friday, december 3, he lost it all. stephanie: in total, he lost more than 1.2 million dollars, liquidated his entire portfolio, 30 years of savings. then the scammer disappeared. he admitted himself to the hospital. >> it's a nightmare. stephanie: he's a victim of a scam called pig butchering.

it's with the gold to get the victim to invest in crypto. >> once they invest, they find out how easily they can invest. they see a rise in their account and end up investing their entire life savings. stephanie:stephanie: special agent sean bradstreet says the cases have tripled across southern california, and the majority of victims are in the bay area. how much money do you think has been lost locally? >> in the bay area, it's in the millions. nationwide, hundreds of millions. the average case that we get is about 100,000. stephanie: why do you think the bay area has become such a target? >> i think a lot of the criminals are targeting the asian community. stephanie: grace is with a global anti-scam organization based in singapore.

she says many victims are being targeted on linkedin, humble -- bumble, and a hinge. >> anytime you are on social media, facebook, instagram, we've seen people scammed from reddit as well. stephanie: the scam first began in china in 2019 and has become more prevalent in the u.s. the fbi reports more than 740 cases of romance-related scams in california last year. $64 million was lost locally in 2021, almost double the $35 million lost in 2020. the counties include san francisco county and alameda county. >> greed is the foundation that makes it so successful. it is greed on behalf of the suspects because they want more

money and greed on behalf of the victims because they feel like they can triple their money in a matter of days. stephanie: money that vanishes like the scam artists until they come creeping back. jessica contacted cy again in february just two months after he lost everything. he sent her a link trying to locate her ip address and tractor location in cambodia. >> she found out the link was a fake and told me to go to hell. stephanie: a month later, she unknowingly contacts him again. >> she didn't realize it was the same dude she scammed already. stephanie: stephanie sierra, abc7news. spencer: spencer christian here with a look at the weather. j.r.: it was wet outside when i woke up. spencer: we've got monsoonal moisture surging in our direction, and that will reduce the wildfire risk.
