teamwork. and actress nichelle nichols. how martin luther king jr. convinced her to stay on "star trek." plus, the mystery surrounding this emergency landing. the co-pilot found dead 20 miles away falling from the plane. and later, some advice for the person holding that billion-dollar mega millions lottery ticket. good monday morning, everyone. we begin with the summer of extremes taking a toll from coast to coast. >> we're seeing new images of flooding disaster in kentucky. more than two dozen people are confirmed dead. dozens are still missing. more rain was predicted overnight. >> meanwhile on the west coast, historic heat is fueling the largest wildfire california has seen this year, forcing 1300 people near the oregon border to flee for their safety, some had only ten minutes to get out.

but we begin with the dire situation thousands of miles to the east. tis morning, more storms are threatening to expand the already-historic and deadly flooding in eastern kentucky, rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour are possible today in same area where dozens of people still remain unaccounted for. after severe weather last week. >> the next couple of days are going to be hard, we've got rain and maybe even a lot of rain that's going to hit the same areas, please pray for the people in these areas. >> reporter: the national guard said helicopters have air lifted about 400 people to safety. that area of eastern kentucky is hilly and mountainous making it hard to reach certain communities. >> here in knox county, where 20 people were killed, i'm told all of the missing are now accounted for, that's after an exhaustive search, where crews comed through miles and miles of debris, mostly along this waterway that flooded the community and devastated so many

lives. >> reporter: morning the survival, the 17-year-old girl and her dog sitting on a roof after their home flooded. according to teen's father, she placed that dog in a plastic container before swimming them both to safety. >> so not good. >> reporter: across the country in california, torrential rains triggered this mudslide east of san bernardino. closing highway 38 stranding drivers. >> don't go down highway 38. it's closed. >> reporter: the massive mud and scorched in eldorado fire. farther north, firefighters are battle this biggest wildfire, burning near the oregon border. more than a hundred structures are already destroyed including homes and this community center. >> we're asking the people to evacuate, the area is very rural. we are noticing that are quite a few people that are helping each other which is really wonderful thing in this time of stress.

>> and more record heat is expected in the northwest today. ten deaths blamed on the heat in oregon. we'll have your forecast in just a few minutes. in washington today sentencing for the first january 6th rioter to be convicted at trial, prosecutors are seeking a 15-year trial for guy reffitt. he's a member of far-right militia in texas, his son turned him in and testified against him. and we turn now to inflation and the debate in washington over a new spending bill to reduce prescription drug prices and fight climate change. it comes as a top banking official says that inflation is now spreading more broadly across the economy. faith abubey joins us. >> reporter: president biden had plans to hit the road this weekend to directly talk to the american public about how he's tackling the economy, but that trip tomorrow now cancelled. this morning, president biden's public schedule cleared after he tested positive again for covid over the weekend.

economy is sliding into a recession even though inflation remains at historic highs. >> it's spreading out more broadly across the economy. >> reporter: the president of the minneapolis federal reserve telling cbs even rising wage aren't keeping up. >> more work to do to bring inflation down, to bring the economy into balance. >> reporter: mona, back on capitol hill, senate democrats need at least 50 votes to pass the inflation bill, but it's sunclear if they have the support of senator sinema. she hasn't signed off on the bill. >> faith in washington, thank you. some encouraging news in the war in ukraine, the first ship packed with grain has left odesa, it followed a russian missile strike that killed a grain tycoon and his wife. shipments have been held up for months. meanwhile, russia is reportedly pulling troops from eastern

ukraine and moving them south where ukraine is making progress of retaking the city of kherson. nancy pelosi and her delegation have arrived in singapore kicking off a tour of asia. questions still remain whether pelosi will travel to taiwan. chinese government has warned that will be repercussions. the chinese government has viewing such a visit to taiwan as encouraging taiwan's independence. tributes are pouring in this morning fors. her influence extended far beyond television. celebrating the life of nichelle nichols. the actress broke barriers for black women in hollywood. the former nightclub singer was best known for her ground-breaking role on the "star trek" franchise sharing with william shatner what's widely believed to be the first

atmfans.com. a growing mystery in north carolina. a plane makes an emergency landing, missing a wheel and one of its pilots. here's derick dennis. >> reporter: this morning so many questions after this small twin engine turboprop plane made an emergency landing, tilted on its wing after losing its right wheel and somehow one of its pilots. >> we've lost our right wheel. >> reporter: that's pilot number one who survived. heard talking with air traffic control minutes before the delicate landing at raleigh durham international. >> we were attempting to land. we made contact with the ground. we had a hard landing and decided to go around. at that point we lost the wheel. >> reporter: he referenced we meaning at one point there were two pilots on board. >> how do you intend to land? >> reporter: get as close as we go. i guess we'll put it on the belly. >> reporter: somehow before the landing, investigators say the

second pilot identified as charles hugh crooks jumped or fell from the plane in mid air without a parachute. landing in a backyard 20 miles away. a thud heard on a homeowner's surveillance camera. >> we had officers that were responding in the area for the search and were flagged down by a resident. they had heard something in their backyard which led to us finding this individual. >> reporter: neighbors left wondering how and why the second pilot left that plane. >> i guess, i don't know if we'll ever really know. it's crazy. if he had jumped a second earlier, he could have been here on my children's play set. the sadness of it. being a 23-year-old guy. probably woke up that day, had breakfast and was ready to go fly a plane. >> reporter: investigators are now questioning the surviving pilot who suffered only minor injuries. as for the young co-pilot, his parents say he loved flying and always wanted to be a professional pilot. mona? andrew? >> thank you. overseas, prince charles is responding to a new candle.
