we have a lot to get to this mrning, start with the severe weather from coast to coast. >> yes, we are, george. it is a summer of extremes. more rain rocking kentucky overnight after that catastrophic flooding. the death toll rising there this morning. in california, the mckinney fire is raging out of control. >> this morning, crews are really struggling to contain the flames while facing wind, heat and thunderstorms that could make the rain even bigger. chief national correspondent matt gutman is there on the scene there for us in california. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. that fire exploded over the weekend. going from several hundred acres on friday to 50,000 on sunday. in fact, we were in the fire zone earlier this morning, but the smoke is so intense we had to come out. we're in oregon right now. you can see how dense the smoke is in the valley, smothering it all. the sheriff telling us he confirms there were two fatalities, a couple found in their car in their own driveway, apparently trying to flee the

flames. this morning, firefighters rushing to beat back the flames from the biggest wildfire in california this season. the mckinney fire went from charring several hundred acres on friday to torching more than 52,000 acres on sunday. destroying over 100 structures and killing at least two people. we spoke to the sheriff earlier this morning. >> my understanding it's still 0% containment. last night we spent developing plans for today which includes going out and doing an assessment of the damage the best we can and we're also looking for any obvious deceased persons in the burn area. >> reporter: residents in over a hundred homes ordered evacuated, the fire threatened to block escape routes. search and rescue crews sent to rescue hikers as reduced visibility to just 20 feet. >> it was pretty scary.

driving through the fire you could see on the highway by the interstate basically pitch black. it looked like midnight when it was, you know, sunset. >> reporter: many homes reduced to ash. in some cases all that remained was a mailbox on the ground or a smoldering truck nearby. >> oh, my god, look at that burn. >> reporter: this video was made friday near a home as the wind picked up. this man rushed to an rv park where his motor home was camped only minutes to throw his belongings in his truck before flames engulfed his home. >> i kept doing a turnaround to see what else i could throw in the truck, but the truck was crammed. lot to take in and try to absorb. you really can't. >> reporter: first responders have been forced to fight against the flames and the weather. this time-lapse video showing an eerie sight. the fire generating so much heat and smoke, it created its own

weather system. lightning colliding with the bright red sky, and now with more evacuations expected there are concerns the weather could quickly change the direction the fire is going. but across this charred landscape a community is working together. >> there are quite a few people that are helping each other, you see the best parts of humans coming out. >> reporter: we mentioned the weather. overnight there were thunderstorms bringing a little precipitation, but also lightning which may have triggered additional fires. the sheriff said he's optimistic the progress of the fire has slowed and thinks he can defend the rest of the communities. michael? >> we hope that's the case, matt. thank you so much. from fire to floods. more rain falling in kentucky overnight. the death toll rising to 28 after this historic flooding and the governor saying that number could increase. eva pilgrim is in kentucky with the latest. good morning, eva. >> reporter: good morning, michael. i want to show you the sheer

force of this water pushing over homes, pulling down these trees. if you look along this creek bank, you can see those are actually pieces of someone's home. you can see a wall there. the water in this creek is up right now, and now this. it is raining once again. this area under a flood advisory this morning. overnight, rain sweeping across kentucky battering the same neighborhoods already destroyed by catastrophic flash flooding. >> this region has been hit harder than any of us have ever seen, maybe harder than any of us thought was possible. >> reporter: homes and businesses washed away, hundreds now living in shelters, dozens still missing. the death toll, now, at 28 including four young siblings aged 2 to 8 years old. their parents held on to them as floodwaters rose clinging to a tree near their destroyed home, but the force of the current

pulling the children out of their grip. william cooks' brother-in-law is one of the missing. he's organizing search parties to find him. >> they want closure. they know what it is, but they want closure. >> reporter: making things difficult the size of the impacted area. this storm just the latest to devastate the area over the last several months. teams of rescuers searching approximately 24 square miles. canine units looking for survivors in mountains of debris. >> we're seeing everything you can imagine. the remains of people's lives is everywhere down this creek. baby shoes and fourth grade pictures. >> reporter: this complicating the search, trained dogs picking up on even the smallest scent. >> there's human scent in the water because others have drowned and then pushed through the water. there's human scent over everything that was in the home. >> reporter: among the stories of survival, the 17-year-old girl and her dog sitting on a roof after their home flooded.

according to the teen's father, she placed her dog in that plastic container before swimming them both to safety. and with more than a thousand rescues this weekend alone, authorities are stepping up efforts as dozens remain missing. >> this is what we do in kentucky. we take care of one another. >> reporter: guys, this terrain is difficult on a good day. the governor saying they'll likely be searching for bodies for weeks. michael? >> difficult to imagine. thank you so much, eva. let's bring in ginger for the forecast and the fire and flood zones. good morning, ginger. >> good morning to you, michael. good morning, everyone. let's start with kentucky because it is still raining as you saw in eva's shot there. we have flood watches in place because there will be rounds of rain. this is kind of the insult. the injury has already been done, but another inch of rain will just make it worse,

eye s especially for the people they're trying to find. they are in that highest threat for flooding today including parts of west virginia and eastern tennessee. severe storms from cincinnati back to evansville, indiana. the monsoon flash flood threat is on for nevada and death valley. and right on top of that is where you end up having that moisture meet the dry air and the wind, and that's why this time lapse that was mentioned by matt, but see the lightning coming through there. prolific lightning possible throughout this important and today. and george, with red flag warnings in place, some of the relative humidity 10% and gusts up to 45%, it's not good for fire weather. >> it sure is not. ginger, thanks. we'll go to the white house now where president biden tested positive for covid again. it's a rebound case from the anti-viral drug paxlovid. senior white house correspondent mary bruce has the story. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. the president is in isolation here at the white house after testing positive for covid again. the president says, though, that he is feeling well, everything is good. he's experiencing no symptoms. the president will be working here in the residence where he has to remain for the next four

days. the white house has again had to cancel all of his events and any planned travel as the white house was hoping that the president would get back out there and tout some of his accomplishments publicly. the president, as you mentioned, is experiencing a rebound case of covid after taking the anti-viral drug paxlovid. the white house warned that this was a possibility. they had stressed this was fairly uncommon. the president saying this happens to just a small minority, but the white house and medical experts continue to underscore that this drug is extremely effective, they say, in reducing the risk of hospitalization and the risk of serious illness. robin? >> we'll keep that in mind. mary, thank you. now we have the latest on the war in ukraine, and strong words from vladimir putin about powerful new weapons. also this morning, a major development with the food shipments leaving ukraine. our senior foreign correspondent ian pannell is again on the scene for us in ukraine. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, robin. it's increasingly sounding like cold war 2.0 out here, as putin points the finger at america as one of its two main national

security threats. meanwhile, yes, there's one piece of good news, these vital grain shipments have finally started again. this morning, in a major move, the first grain ship to leave ukraine since the start of the war has just departed from odesa. it's a high-risk journey. the ship is loaded with 26,000 tons of corn. it's hoped the shipments will start to's a global hunger crisis made worse by the war. abc's patrick reevell is there. >> the first ship is finally leaving from here in odesa. you can see it behind me, moving very slowly from the port. it's headed for turkey. it's a major breakthrough for ending russia's blockade. >> reporter: the entire ukrainian coastline under a russian blockade since the start of the war. russia displaying its strength at sea. speaking at the country's navy day parade sunday, putin announcing the deployment of hypersonic missiles in the coming months. [speaking foreign language] saying, the systems have no equal in the world for which will are no barriers and putin

signing a new navy doctrine, increasing russia's military presence citing as a major security threats what it calls the united states' goal of dominance in the world ocean and nato's mounting activity. this as the fighting in the south of ukraine intensifies. as ukraine mounts a counteroffensive to take back the russian-held city of kherson, mortgages that russia is moving a large number of troops from the east to the south, causing widespread devastation. president zelenskyy calling it one of the most brutal shellings in the region over the entire period of the full scale war. ukrainian officials saying the attacks consisted of at least 12 missiles. destroying numerous buildings, including the home of a ukrainian grain magnet and his wife, killing them both as grain shipments finally get going again. well, this movement of russian

troops from the east to the south seems in response to this ukrainian counteroffensive. i think it's fair to say that if a month ago the momentum appeared with russia, today that seems to have ended. george? >> ian pannell, thanks. now to capitol hill where congressional democrats are racing to pass a climate and health care bill ahead of the august recess. the stakes are high and the margins are close. congressional correspondent rachel scott is tracking it all. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. it is down to the wire for senate democrats now scrambling to get this economic bill passed before they leave town for the august recess on friday. if they pull it off, it would be the largest investment in climate in u.s. history, putting $369 billion toward climate and energy initiatives, including tax credits for buying electric vehicles, a major investment for americans buying their own health insurance, and it would also lower the cost of medications for seniors. all of this would be paid for increasing taxes on big corporations and the wealthy.

but this morning, it's unclear if democrats have the votes they need to get it passed. they need the support of all 50 senate democrats and right now there's still one big holdout. senator kyrsten sinema of arizona has not indicated if she plans to vote yes. >> what impact will this this on inflation? >> reporter: it's in the name of the bill, the inflation reduction act. democrats argue it puts billions of dollars towards tackling the deficit, it would help reduce inflation. one outside analysis says it would slightly increase inflation in 2024 before bringing it back down. george? >> thanks very much, rachel. michael? now to celebrating an nba giant on and off the court. bill russell won more championships than any other player in league history. he was also a towering figure in the civil rights movement. t.j. holmes is here with more on his life and legacy and what a legacy it is, t.j. >> yeah, strahan, it's crazy. we talk about michael jordan's six and we were in awe that tom brady has seven. bill russell has 11 championships. the man literally has more rings than fingers.

more than a million dollars in 2013 for his charity from the family of osama bin laden, the founder of al qaeda and the mastermind behind the september 11th attacks. >> although the prince of wales has done nothing illegal in accepting this money, it's optically just appalling. >> reporter: according to the "sunday times," the future king secured the fund from two of osama bin laden's half-brother in saudi arabia, neither have ties to terrorism. the family officially disavowed bin laden decades ago. "the sunday times" also claiming the prince agreed to the donation despite several of his advisers allegedly pleading with him to return the money. warning, it would cause national outrage if the news leaked to the media. >> fundamentally i think that this has been naive at best and stupid at worst. these revelations, although not illegal, don't actually help his reputation, and damage the monarchy in the long-term. >> reporter: the prince's office clarence house confirming the donation was made but denying

that prince charles brokered it. in a statement saying, the charitable fund has assured us that thorough due diligence was undertaken in accepting this donation. the decision to accept was taken by the charity's trustees alone. any attempt to characterize it otherwise is false. as prince charles steps further into the spotlight taking over responsibilities from the queen, these new allegations coming on the heels of another scandal. reports surfaced that prince charles' charity accepted more than $3 million of cash in suitcases from a qatari billionaire over the last decade. dubbed the cash in bags controversy, the charity commission reviewed this claim, deciding that no further action would be taken and no investigation would be launched. since it appears there was nothing illegal about that donation from the osama bin laden family, no investigation has been announced. but it's the optics around that donation that could cause the most harm. gys? >> thank you, maggie. coming up, celebrating actress nichelle nichols, from "star trek," to nasa.

matt gutman is on the scene. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, george, good morning. we're actually in oregon right now. that's california, but the smoke covers many hundreds of square miles at this point. that fire burned so hot it incinerated over 100 homes. in many cases just a mailbox or a chimney or truck left behind. so hot, in fact, the created its own weather system. essentially thunderstorms firing lightning into the fire system, which then triggered new fires over the weekend. might have happened again overnight. the smoke is so dense the sheriff tells me that they don't know for sure. sheriff also saying, confirming two fatalities here.there were - people were found in their car in their driveway, apparently just trying to flee the flames. the sheriff said he's confident they're going to be able to protect the rest of the communities here.

robin? >> we share that optimism. matt, thank you. from california to kentucky, where the search for survivors is intensifying after that devastating and deadly flooding, abc's eva pilgrim is on the ground with the latest. good morning, again, eva. >> reporter: good morning, robin. you can see those are literally walls to someone's house sitting on the bank of this creek behind me and if you take a look at our drone shot you'll see more debris littering along the creek but you'll also see slabs of concrete, all in a row. those were once homes that were washed away by this water as it came very powerfully through this area. overnight we saw more torrential downpours battering this area, the same neighborhoods already destroyed by catastrophic flash flooding. the death toll now at 28 including four young siblings ages 2 to 8 years old. homes, businesses washed away. hundreds now living in shelters. dozens still missing. making things difficult is the size of this impacted area. teams of rescuers searching

approximately 24 square miles. canine units looking for survivors in mountains of debris and with more than a thousand rescues this weekend o missing. guys, this is a difficult terrain to search on a good day. the governor here in kentucky saying, they will likely be looking for bodies for weeks. robin? >> hard to hear. so hard to hear, eva. thank you. michael? >> thank you, robin. now to the growing monkeypox outbreak. new york state and city declaring health emergencies with the cdc reporting about 5,200 cases worldwide. now saying children 8 and under could develop more severe illness. joining us now is abc news chief medical correspondent dr. jennifer ashton. doc, thanks for joining us. what's the cdc saying about the highest risk groups? >> this is a cdc health alert, this is put out to health care providers because they want doctors and providers to be aware.

right now i want to be clear. this is a rapidly evolving and dynamically changing situation. 99% of the cases thus far have been in gay men, but there is concern that that could change. so the groups the cdc want people to understand may be at higher risk -- people are compromised immune systems like uncontrolled hiv or dealing with cancer treatments, pregnant women, not necessarily for them, but the risk of transmission to the fetus, and then children under the age of 8. and again, people's radars needs to be up for this. >> without a doubt. if you're a parent of a young child, or children, what should you look out for? what are the signs and symptoms? >> for everyone, right now, the overall risk is low, but again, as we test more we'll see more cases. so signs and symptoms of monkeypox, it starts with headaches, body aches, fever, flu-like symptoms. also could feel like another virus, covid. then the characteristic painful

spanish government $14.8 million in taxes between 2012 and 2014, asking for an additional $24.5 million in interest. a rep for shakira firing back, saying, the singer has always cooperated and abided by the law. saying the spanish tax office continues to violate her rights and pursue yet another baseless case. >> the spanish government has made no secret of going after celebrities for tax evasion. we've had lionel messi, cristiano ronaldo and now shakira, and often times the government wants to make an example of them. >> reporter: the pop star rejected a settlement deal and opted to go to trial instead. her attorneys argue she lived a majority of 2012 to 2014 in the bahamas and not in spain and

ranging in age from one week old to 12 week old, all living in this home. they gave them shelter, medical care after rescuing them. this morning i'm happy to report that ten days after every single one of these furry friends is healthy, dozens have already been adopted. the pups are still getting their shots and microchips, but many of the dogs are still available as early as today for adoptions. families in the area are also helping out by fostering the rest of those pups in the meantime. a happy ending there in the making. well. wantou anre named bonnie, 5-year-old beagle mix. she was in the mood for a run, she escaped from her family home in england. she was rescued by a good samaritan.

se sensitive. now it's the other way around. it's like, they're so bossy. you know, it feels like they work for disney now. wake up, go to work, do it right. >> wake up, go to work, do it right, and don't say a word about the script. >> exactly. >> but you've always been into "star wars." you have your own action figure. what is it like being a part of that universe and any interesting fan encounters? >> it's so unique. all my life i've been trying to get people's attention to watch the stories we want to tell, making noise so people would be like, who is that guy? this is the opposite. the expectation is there. i was there at the -- at the "star wars" celebration. the audience there, it's like you can tell there's so much love for this. they want to see it, but they want to love it, you know? that energy is so special, like nothing else. >> scary that they know more about your character than you do. >> sometimes, yes. they know how to pronounce the names better than i do.

>> you do just fine. this is really exploring your character's origin story. what can we expect? what can you tell us? >> it's quite unique because we know what he's capable of, we'll meet him when he doesn't know he's capable of that. we'll meet him when life is tough. it's sometimes a dark and interesting life. he's just a regular guy that suddenly has to become part of something bigger, has to become part of a community that rises. it's the beginning of the -- the origins of the revolution. it's a beautiful story. it reminds us of what we're all capable of. there's no jedi around. it's people having to take control. >> and when you were here last night you talked about doing your own stunts. did you do them this time around? >> i'm a little older. i needed sometimes some help. i love that. i love the whole world. suddenly i'm a kid on the set

doggies in just a bit, but first, we want you to meet the pup that's the heart and soul of philadelphia, works at the children's hospital in philadelphia. >> sunday night, taking dilly a. >> reporter: meet 4-year-old dilly, a labrador retriever with a heart of gold. >> i would describe dilly as a very goofy dog. he's very snuggly, extremely smart and really just the greatest thing that's ever happened in my life. >> reporter: beloved by his handler lizzie and here at the children's hospital of philadelphia where he works as a full-time employee. as a trained facility dog, dilly brings joy and support in even the most difficult times, offering unconditional love. >> good boy. >> when you're with a family and a patient, you see how everybody's body language starts to relax. he kind of reads the room and knows what to do. >> he's doing one of the hardest jobs here and that hardest job is making someone, you know, happy and hopeful. someone that has a hard job but also sleeps on the job at the

same time. >> reporter: 16-year-old cameron and dilly are now forever friends. >> i remember, when i met dilly, it kind of brought normalcy to being here. >> reporter: bonded throughout his extended hospitalization. >> thursday at 4:00 were dilly days. if cameron had a procedure that morning or afternoon, the first back in time for dilly? i be - >> reporter: dilly by cameron's side through his heart transplant surgery and as he healed. >> cameron's first longest walk was with dilly. if dilly wasn't available, cameron probably wouldn't have walked that day. that was the beginning of cameron's recovery. >> reporter: always doing his part to help his young patients thrive. >> not a lot of words happening at the time but there's so much deep meaning going on. there's so much more being conveyed between the dog and the patient. to me that's the magic of doing this work. >> reporter: that's the magic. just want to be clear, you can't adopt dilly.

he loves chasing the ball. he's 8 years young. he's a greyhound retriever mix. he's ready to be your love match. give it up for benjamin. next up, we have onyx, dazzling our runway in bark jacobs. yes, i said it. 2 years old. terrier pitbull mix who is a total sweetheart with the silliest sense of humor. loves to play outside and loves to chew bones and loves the musical stylings of weird al. i don't know why i know that, but i do. thank you so much, onyx. you're gorgeous. oh, my goodness. brax, his cowboy look, what a handsome devil. i love this dog so much. he's a big baby. this beautiful 3-year-old is just dying to come home with you. he's a terrier pitbull mix with nothing but love to give. he wants to lasso his way into your heart. he'd liked to show off his impeccable manners.

you saw a glimpse of those earlier in the show. finally -- oh, no. not finally. is this bishop? oh, wow, bishop is bedazzled. don't be afraid to roll the dice on this vegas guy. do you see that? wow, he's ready for a night on the town. 5-year-old terrier/pit bull mix, shy at first but he's great with he loves dogs and he lives well with cats. a well-rounded guy smiling, wagging his tail right now. he r finall lt not least we have wesker. he's a penn state fan. a total love. a rottweiler mix. 70 pounds of pure joy. his little nubby tail a wagging at all times.

myself. now we're authentically doing it in all our way and little kids don't have to worry about role models anymore. we're doing it our own way. >> i love that. you know what, let's not delay anymore. let's take a look at a clip. >> who is he talking to? >>safe to say he's delusional. >> have to set a good example. >> uncle. >> what? >> the director's cut of "big trouble in little china." i've never seen this one. >> what are you kids doing here? >> i need help. >> no. you got me in the middle of making myself a better man. >> people might have noticed that the owl's eyes in that scene are pixelated because indigenous people believe that owls are bad omens. i know you said it was very important to respect traditions, especially in the darker scenes. tell me about that. >> how we started off both season 1 and 2 and how we ended

it was doing ceremony. we blessed the set and each other to do it right. it's the same thing we did on how we tackled the harder scenes in the first season. there was a scene that was very dark. we smudged ourselves with sage to cleanse that bad energy we got from before and after. a good way -- >> to set the tone for everything. and, lane, this was your first audition. how is acting life treating you? >> it's been crazy. it's been amazing. i've got to go places where i never thought i would. i met these guys. they've been helping me every step of the way. i get to -- i get to be here and it's been amazing.

it's been such an honor because i have been watching this show, like, mostly all my life and watching these actors and now i get to see some of them and they have been amazing. it's been such a wild ride, and i'm so honored. >> was did your family think about the show and your character cheese? >> that's all they call me now. it's been amazing. everyone's so excited and, you know, we talk about it a lot at get-togethers and all that stuff. it's been amazing. they've all been so positive and it's just been amazing. >> paulina and d'pharaoh, how has it been for you? what are some of the things you you're hearing when people meet you? >> i get from my family and friends, i'm not acting. it's how i am. turn the camera on. >> and you're you. >> same for me. i'm very similar to bear. >> keep on doing what you're doing. keep being yourself. that's why people love the show.
