for fire crews zach. yeah, again to reiterate it's being called the largest wildfire so far this season. we now know that the mckinney fire has burned more than 55,000 acres and a 0% contained remember this only started on friday and today of course. we now know that two lives have been lost in so many others have been impacted and we got to speak and have been keeping up with area residents who live close to the fire and are already feeling its effects. thousands of acres burned more than 100 structures destroyed and now more tragedy linked to the mckinney fire after two people were found dead in a vehicle the car was found in a driveway in the wildfire zone. cal fire says overnight weather helped tamed down some of the fires spread but vegetation in the area is extremely dry crews continue to strategize on how to best utilize resources focusing right now on a town most that risk ideas to protect yreka. we really loaded up that a fire justice of yreka through spotty

that we've long seen in the united states and especially here in the bay area of a dual relationship between the people's republic of china and taiwan, but people's republic of china believes that taiwan is a part of the people's republic of china taiwan's believe that they are independent that they left after the communist take over and that they are not planning on going back what we often have in san francisco in the bay area are delegations or people like nancy pelosi who go to china and then they go to taiwan on their way back in other words to give face to both but right now china is upset that taiwan is going to be visited by the person that's third in line for the presidency after joe biden kamala harris. it's nancy pelosi now, larry this is has a little bit to do with face. but also there's ongoing tensions, especially like i said here in the bay area with china over a number of issues everything from free tibet to the uighurs the treatment of the minorities muslim minorities in the far western side of china trade also to be honest.

we also have a lot of esp going on here in the bay area where the chinese are often accused of pilfering our tech. so it's attention rising rising and now with nancy pelosi as this being in this top speaker the house going there add that to it. so when you look at the bay area take the rest of the united states out of it. it's kind of a balancing act between china and taiwan because obviously you want to have good relations with both sides. yeah, you know years ago about 20 years ago. there used to be actually a competition it down in chinatown between who was flying which flag whether it was going to be republic of china or taiwan and there were two distinct factions here in the city, but about in the mid 80s that started to melt away as china's economic. boom. rose up and people had a sense of pride and more pragmatism the prc became the dominant force in san francisco. and you know, it's a very cozy relatish mayors in francisco ha it was great relations with

are celebratory when hong kong was returned to the china and chinese is the idea would be two countries one country, but two different forms of government and that the hong kong would enjoy a certain amount of independence that has improved the case. there's been crackdowns recently on democracy there and that is added to the tension. so larry whatever happens between us in china whether it's students coming in from uc whether it's apple products being manufactured there. this is going to be a long and it possibly bumpy rel. and ship is now as people are reevaluating what appears to be a new mood in china much more militant than it has been in the past 10 years. all right, so given all of the things that you've mentioned here. what's the upside potentially for nancy pelosi to visit taiwan. the upside is to reaffirm the fact that we support taiwan and that we will stand with them if they are invaded and that is a counter message going back to china president. joe biden might not wanting to be sending that right now given the ukraine and other in around

edu in san francisco leanne melendez abc 7 news a santa clara valley nonprofit is helping students prepare for school. today's sunnyvale community services hosted a back-to-school drive-thru event for children and their families. they handed out school supplies along with $100 gift cards for backpacks shoes and other essentials last year. we helped about 1700 children this year. we're forecasting 2,000 children the school supplies in these gift cards are one way for them to hole for them to feel that the community cares. they have a life in front of them that the children are going to be able to have a very very wonderful start to the new year. the drive-through event continues until 7:00 tonight. there's also a walk-up event tomorrow from 8:00 in the morning until noon those attending must be registered through the organization. all right, larry. i don't know seeing people carrying around umbrellas and what is going on well ever in northern california last few

casualties that they know of at this time and his family was inside and they were not killed. we have also learned that the taliban, senior taliban commanders knew that zawahiri was in kabul and clearly did nothing about that and that is going to be a serious issue with the u.s., that they were harboring a terrorist like zawahiri after saying they would not harbor any terrorist in kabul. think, the taliban took over just about a year ago in august last year when the u.s. troops were all moving out of there. that may have emboldened zawahiri to be more open about his presence feeling he had the protection of the taliban, but boy, president biden said it right. the cia, the u.s. was persistent. they found him. they tracked him down and they killed him. >> as you mentioned, as well, as the president many had thought that once the american troops

pulled out nearly a year ago from afghanistan that the intel might be limited on the ground without having those boots on the ground. >> exactly, and you can imagine that the administration will use this again and again saying look, we can still go after people the so-called over the horizon counter terrorist operations that they can still go after people, but it will still be difficult, linsey. there were no u.s. anybody, zero u.s. presence on the ground in kabul. they certainly got help from someone in trying to identify him positively. we don't really know who that is, but there were no u.s. boots on the ground, no u.s. intel officers as far as we know anywhere near that house, and they were still able to pull this off with help from somebody, i'm sure. >> martha raddatz, our thanks to you as always. now let's bring in abc white house correspondent cecilia vega. the president obviously still in isolation from covid.
