>> here at home many republicans are sounding the alarm claiming president biden's decision last year to withdraw u.s. troops from afghanistan re-opened the door to violent extremists who want to kill americans. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell saying afghanistan is once again becoming a major thicket of terrorist activity. abc's ike ejiochi joins us from washington with the very latest. ike, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mona. after more than 20 years on the run, america's most wanted terrorist was found in the very heart of afghanistan's capital raising new questions for both the taliban and the u.s. government. this morning, new details about the high-precision strike that took out the fbi's pose wanted terrorist. a senior administration official says a drone strike killed ayman al zawahiri after u.s. intelligence tracked him to a safe house in kabul. >> justice has been delivered, and this terrorist leader is no more. >> reporter: according to the official, the cia first briefed the president back in april that zawahiri was believed to be living in the house with his

wife and children. in july the cia built a model of the safe house to show the president how a strike could be carried out. biden authorized the strike days later, and on sunday around 6:00 a.m. a drone fired two hellfire missiles at al zawahiri as he stepped onto the balcony of the safe house. sources say no one else was killed. >> what this type of drone is, this type of munition i should say is to deliberately try to avoid any collateral damage. >> reporter: experts say hellfire missiles do not explode. instead the missiles are equipped with razor-like blades extending from the fuselage which slice through a target. >> so it will go through and essentially vaporize a human body, but somebody standing within feet of this person would not be injured at all. >> reporter: al zawahiri was second in command to osama bin laden at the time of the 9/11 attacks taking over al qaeda after bin laden was killed in 2011 and remained elusive with a $25 million bounty on his head believed to be hiding on the

afghanistan/pakistan border. abc's news contributor tom bossert, who served as deputy homeland security adviser to president george w. bush says al zawahiri's death is a major blow to the terror organization. >> hearing from people i've served with over the past 20 or 25 years is a sense of relief, a sense of vengeance and justice, no one is going to lose any sleep over this man losing his life tonight. this is something to be happy for and not sad about. >> reporter: but al zawahiri was found in a wealthy area of kabul just steps from the u.s. embassy less than one year after u.s. forces pulled out of afghanistan and the taliban took over claiming they had changed their ways. secretary of state antony blinken says by sheltering al zawahiri, the taliban grossly violated the terms of the doha agreement, the peace deal reached before the u.s. withdrawal. >> so they are not only doing nothing to prevent terrorist organizations like isis-k and al qaeda from operating in

afghanistan, they were actually protecting the number one terrorist in the world so it shows they are not a partner at all. >> reporter: now the house where al zawahiri was staying was reportedly owned by a top aide to a senior taliban leader. mona. >> ike, thank you. house speaker nancy pelosi arrived in malaysia today as the world waits to see if taiwan will be her next stop. local media in taiwan say pelosi is expected to land there tonight despite warnings from china that such a visit would be crossing a red line. the biden administration says any escalation in tensions would be on beijing and the u.s. military is prepared to respond if needed. pelosi's tour is aimed at discussing trade, climate change and security. hundreds of people are still unaccounted for after the devastating flooding in eastern kentucky. at least 37 people are confirmed dead. victims are being airlifted from areas overrun by floodwaters. the national guard says it's rescued more than 400 people by helicopter. kentucky's governor says it may

take weeks to find all the victims, and there could be more flooding. amid the devastation a 98-year-old woman was rescued by a good samaritan. her family is grateful while realizing that everything she had is now gone. >> she has lived in that house 73 years, and she kept saying that everything was lost, everything is lost, and it's hard to say, no, it's not because the truth of the matter is it is. >> due to the aging infrastructure in many areas, residents say it could be weeks until water and other basic services are restored. from floods to fires in northern california, authorities say they're making progress fighting the state's largest wildfire of the year. the mckinney fire is blamed for at least two deaths and thousands of people have been forced from their homes. officials say there was no growth yesterday, but the fire was still at zero containment. the extreme heat and drought in

the west could mean even higher prices now at the grocery store. some experts predict beef prices could rise another 10% next year. it could take years before we see prices back to normal. now to politics and the high-stakes primary election in five states today. abortion is on the ballot in one state and a confusing endorsement from former president trump is making headlines in another. this morning, kansas becomes the first state to put abortion on the ballot since the supreme court overturned roe v. wade. voters will decide whether kansas residents will continue to have the right to an abortion under the state constitution or whether to give state lawmakers the power to restrict it. >> abortion is the killing of an unborn baby. everybody who is against this amendment was once that child. >> reporter: polls show a close race. jennifer hickerson, a devout catholic, supports giving state lawmakers the power to ban abortion, but susan osbourne, also a catholic, is on the other

side. >> i'm going to vote no for my daughter, for my granddaughter. >> reporter: in arizona today republicans rusty bowers and david farnsworth face off in the closely watched state senate primary. farnsworth has the backing of former president trump. >> i'm a proven conservative who knows how to get things done. >> reporter: while bowers, the current house speaker, recently testified to the january 6th committee about withstanding pressure from trump to reverse the 2020 election results in the state. >> someone born how he was and raised how he was, he has no idea what a hard life is and what people have to go through in the real world. he has no idea what courage is. >> reporter: meanwhile, trump has triggered confusion in missouri after endorsing eric in the state primary without providing a last name. there are two erics in the race. both eric greitens who has been accused of abuse and blackmail and eric schmitt, the current attorney general have claimed the endorsement as their own. trump not providing clarity overnight leaving many to

reaction to nfl star deshaun watson's six-game suspension in his sexual assault scandal. >> it's not enough. >> i thought it would be many more game. >> reporter: 24 civil lawsuits were brought against watson. he was accused of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage sessions. the judge appoint bid the nfl and the player union to oversee watson's case described his conduct as predatory and said he had not expressed remorse. the league initially asked for a suspension of at least one year and a fine of at least $5 million. judge robinson found his actions did not fall into the category of violent conduct which would have support more disciplinary action. instead, settling on six game. >> deshaun watson was i feel creditably accused by 24 women of some time of sexual misconduct. so that is what? one quarter of a game suspension
