you can see some high clouds from the right-hand side. this is how the day will shape up. partly cloudy skies. the sun is coming up in about one hour and 15 minutes. 70's and 80's along the bay shoreline, 90's inland. we will preview the weekend and a few minutes. jobina: developing news, police are looking for the person who opened fire on a muni bus as it was traveling through the city's sunnydale neighborhood. one man died, another was hurt. ryan has the details. ryan: yes, good morning. this search is on for the person who possibly did the shooting on a bus, rather than the recent time we saw in june when it happened on a train. it happened in the sunnydale neighborhood. the biggest concern is trying to determine whether the cameras on the bus were working at the time.

this happened it just after 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon. the circumstances are unknown right now. one of the victims received cpr and was transported to the hospital, but as mentioned he later died. another person was injured. this is now the second muni shooting we have seen this summer, the other happened in june on a train traveling towards castro station. residents say they are not nervous to take muni. >> i feel like in the pandemic, like things have gotten worse, safety wise. >> oh my god, i do not want to. i do not want to take muni today. i'm so scared. ryan: sfpd says overall writing -- riding is safe and they did make an arrest in the castro incident this summer, but that train did have working cameras on it, that is one reason why

they actually were able to figure out the suspect involved in the shooting. right now, it is unclear whether or not on the bus, if the cameras were working as well. we are hoping to find out later today. we are in san francisco, ryan curry. jobina: we will have updates on the story. stay up-to-date by downloading the bay area news app, and enable push alerts. police are investigating a stabbing that happened on a train at that south hayward station last night. there was an altercation and one man was stabbed. officers have not made an arrest. the man is expected to survive. reggie: we are learning about an outbreak of legionnaires' traced it to a local hotel in napa county. we explain what it means for the neighborhood. reporter: amid the pandemic and

monkeypox, napa county is now dealing with another deadly problem, and outbreak of legionnaires' disease. >> it is a kind of pneumonia. it's an infection in the lung caused by a bacteria. reporter: at a news conference, county health officials detailed the outbreak which began on july 11. so far, 12 cases have been identified. >> three are currently hospitalized and one is on a ventilator. eight people have recovered from the disease, and one person has died. reporter: the outbreak has been traced to a cooling tower on the roof of a hotel in the city of napa, seen here. while the cooling tower has been cleaned and taken off-line come health officials are not aware of any staff or guests of the hotel being affected. all those who have come down with the disease live nearby. >> if the cooling tower is contaminated with the bacteria,

people's park has been stopped through the weekend after protesters clashed with police, as you can see from the video. the park is owned by uc berkeley, which is planning on building housing for students and un-housed people. there will also be a revitalized park. crews moved in after midnight yesterday, clearing out people at the park. throughout the morning, protesters gathered, trying to stop the construction. some equipment was damaged and arrests were made. protesters say they are standing in support of the community. >> as climate change activists, it is painful to see a park built for the community being torn down. >> we conducted surveys of the student population and by a 2-1 margin students at uc berkeley support the project here. jobina: uc berkeley says it will assess the situation and decide within the next few days when to

restart. reggie: a police officer has been fired for excessive force. some of the video you are about to see is disturbing. body cam shows a confrontation involving a richmond police officer, eric smith junior, on april 9. he hits the man with a taser after teasing the suspect more than 30 times. he was trying to arrest the man after he ran away from a traffic stop. the police chief offered an apology. >> i want to apologize to the individual that was involved in the incident, as well as the community at large. officer smith's actions are unacceptable. again, the department fired him yesterday. reggie: he had been on administrative leave since the incident. jobina: a new district attorney is taking action that she says will hold drug dealers accountable. she announced she is rescinding more than 30 plea deals with people accused of selling fentanyl. jenkins believes the deals granted by the former da were

too lenient. the action is part of a slate of new policies that she is implementing, that she says well combat the drug epidemic in the city. reggie: on the mckinney fire, firefighters are making progress on the most instructive fire of the year in the state. it is 10% contained. it started last friday. this is the first report of any containment. cloudy and cooler conditions are helping. crews say it stopped the spread of the fire towards eureka. the fire is blamed for four deaths and it has burned nearly 90 square miles. firefighters have stopped progress on a brush fire in east contra costa county. this is time-lapse from a wildfire monitoring camera. it broke out just before 11:00 p.m. last night. calfire says the fire appears to be about 10 or 15 acres. drive carefully in the area because they are continuing to put the flames out. drew: we are looking outside.

other bay area city. health officials promise an update when more vaccines arrive. reggie: we are learning more about the biden administration's response to monkeypox. the health services secretary will give an update today. it comes as more than 25,000 cases have been reported globally. about a quarter of those are in the u.s., including five children. here is our news reporter. em: growing concerns for monkeypox and the u.s. as places -- as cases top 6600, including five children. the latest pediatric case in california, where the l.a. county department public health is offering vaccines. >> i was able to get this appointment right when they came. the community is pretty scared. em: l.a. officials say they have about 19,000 doses for high-risk individuals, but -- >> there is a shortage of supply.

monkeypox a state of emergency, president biden appointed to top officials to oversee the monkeypox response in the nation. jobina: days and weeks before schools are back in session and at the cdc is expected to update covid-19 guidance in schools as early as this week. cnn reports changes include eliminating the five day quarantine for unvaccinated people exposed to the virus. instead they will be able to go out with a mask and test themselves five days after exposure. those with symptoms should continue to isolate. the agency is also planning to deemphasize social distancing and regular testing in schools. changes are still being discussed and are not final. reggie: the san francisco mayor will take a tour of the festival today and golden gate park. the box office is open at 25th and fulton. three-day and a single day passes are still on sale. single day tickets start at

muggy conditions, eight minutes. reggie: a search is underway for the person who shot and killed a man on a muni bus yesterday afternoon. this is in the sunnydale neighborhood. another person was shot. that person has non-life-threatening injuries. here is ryan. ryan: good morning. this becomes the second shooting on muni this summer, the first one back in june off of that train near castro station. this was on a bus in the sunnydale neighborhood. now police are collecting evidence to figure out what led up to the shooting, but there might be in issue because they do not know if the cameras on the bus were working at the time. that is something they are still trying to figure out. they say it happened just after 3:00 p.m. first responders performed cpr on a victim that had life-threatening injuries. that person was transported to

the hospital and later died. the other victim had non-life-threatening injuries. what led up to the shooting is unknown, that is what they are trying to figure out. they fear it was a random incident. now residents here say they do not feel safe on muni. >> it is filled with crazy passengers. last time i went, somebody was putting graffiti all over the windows. >> things and peer to be random. they appear to be random incidents, neither focused on passengers but rather it random incidents happening in or around muni. ryan: now, muni says each a train and bus hva high quality -- have high quality video cameras, but police are not entirely sure that they were working during the time of this incident. we are hoping to find out more information later today. we know cameras were rolling in the june shooting and it led to

them finding the suspect. so they are try to find out if they can use cameras for this similar incident. we are in san francisco, ryan curry. jobina: this morning, san jose police will update us on the investigation into a series of air-powered rifle attacks. a plane was arrested yesterday, accused of shooting seven women and girls. some victims are facing life-threatening injuries. two shared the same near-death experience. they were both shot in the back with an air-powered rifle only two days apart. the pellets coming within millimeters from their hearts. >> brought relief knowing that he is behind bars and cannot hurt anyone else. he's hurt way too many people. >> i am glad the guy was caught. i feel safer now. jobina: all the shootings happened in south san jose and campbell. police are asking for other victims to come forward. reggie: new fallout from that

surprise vote to uphold abortion rights in kansas. the vote is having implications across the country, democrats praising the move, saying the threat to abortion rights has energized voters and are hoping it carries over to the november election, possibly giving the democrats momentum and congressional races. but for the republican senator of kansas, he is convinced voters will have other things on their minds in fall. >> voters will be focused on the cost of groceries, gasoline and rent. that is all i hear about. my life has been about protecting the lives of moms and babies, and i think that this was a step away from that. buteverthels, respect the process. reggie: four more states are preparing to vote on abortion rights, california, kentucky, montana and vermont. this after the president signed an executive order for medicaid to help women seeking abortions to travel between states to obtain access to the procedure.

jobina: governor newsom urging hollywood to stop filming in states that restrict abortion. his campaign for reelection took out a full-page ad in variety, calling on the film and tv industry to leave states that impose restrictions and bring business back to california. according to a variety, the bill endorsed by the governor would provide $330 million a year in financial support for content creators through 2030. reggie:reggie: a stunning moment in court when conspiracy theorist alex jones was caught in another lie. he was cross-examined during a defamation trial stemming from his claims about the sandy hook school shooting. our reporter explains that something happened in court that no one expected and it could land jones in more trouble. reporter: an about-face from a media host, alex jones, now conceding the massacre at sandy hook elementary school in 2012 was real. >> it was, especially since i

january 6 committee is planning to subpoena them as that looks into jones's role in the capitol attack. jobina: closing arguments are said to get underway this morning and brittney griner's drug smuggling trial in russia. she was brought into a courtroom about 30 minutes ago. abc news reports the russian prosecutor is asking that she serve a nine and a half year prison sentence, plus a $16,000 $500 fine -- $16,500 fine. she will be allowed to give a statement. she has pleaded guilty for having vape cartridges with hash oil at the airport, but denies that she attempted to break russian law. the biting administration is proposing a prisoner swap to get her home. reggie: it is back-to-school beautification week in oakland, the last day for people to prep schools for the first day of class. the oakland public education finder says it so far volunteers have worked at 11 schools this

amazon and jeff bezos's megayacht has been towed to sea. it has been a controversy since february when the company building it asked to dismantle a bridge to get into open water.the problem was three tall masts. after considerable outcry from the community, the plan was scrapped. this week it was taken a different route without the masts. they will be installed later. jobina: federal government officials visited a san pablo park to see how the west contra costa county school district is administering its summer meals program. they partner with contra kitchen to make healthy meals for students with food from local farms. for the last couple years, the federal government has been reimbursing the schools. that's being phased out for the upcoming school year.
