up under heat advisories. >> ginger is here with the record-breaking temperatures. ginger, we don't have to tell you the northeast is bracing for what will feel like the triple digits in some areas. good morning. >> good morning to you, robin. it is already in the upper 70s in new york city. you know it's going to be a hot day when you start five, six degrees shy of where we would feel comfortable for the afternoon high, but that is not where we will start today. look at the heat in washington, d.c. already this morning. they're feeling like 78 out the door. looking from the monument there, their feels like this afternoon should get to 105. in boston also very warm, 73 out the door. will feel like close to 100. heat advisories in place from montana to texas but also from north carolina where it could feel up to 107 and here in the mid-atlantic and new england and for two days, this is why you say, come on, it's august, of course, it's going to feel like close to 100. when you have it for more than two days and feeling like 95 plus for those that do not have the privilege of air-conditioning, this can be a very dangerous situation.

robin? >> we got to keep that in mind. i know you'll have more for us later. thank you, ginger. george? now the latest on the battle over abortion. president biden signed an executive order on abortion access and called out kansas for that decisive vote protecting abortion rights. >> the voters of kansas sent a powerful signal that this fall the american people will vote to preserve and protect the right and refuse to let them be ripped away by politicians and my administration has their back. >> chief white house correspondent cecilia vega joins us now. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: hey, george, good morning to you. so president biden and frankly the rest of his party are really looking at kansas hoping that this is a sign of what's to come in just 96 days when voters head to the ballot box for these midterms. look, kansas is a deeply red state. voters sent a clear message to defend abortion rights, even in some of the most conservative leaning counties and this was a surprise. this measure was defeated. so democrats right now, they're really hoping this issue

galvanizes their base especially when it comes to the coveted vote of suburban women. they're using this as part of a broader messaging campaign to paint republicans as extremists on social issues. but republicans, they are clear on this one. they say the midterms are going to end up being about a referendum on the president and the economy, abortion really the reality is take a look at this only on the ballot in four other states this year, so it really remains to be seen whether this is going to become a defining issue that gets voters to the polls. so, the president, you mentioned there, he signed that eu yesterday aiming to help low-income women traveling to other states. he is really, george, trying to show that his administration is out front on this. but, frankly, when it comes to the eo they have offered very few details on how this will end up working or how the government will be able to pay for this one. >> cecilia, the 2020 election lie and how elections will be administered in the future also on the ballot in november. >> reporter: yeah, with that, that means president trump is what we're talking about.

he is really going to be a spotlight, this issue of the election lie. so look at this. four states nominating republican candidates to rules overseeing elections in those states. they all right now back trump's efforts to overturn that 2020 race. so we could potentially be talking, george, about a very serious impact on voting for millions of americans around this country. >> huge consequences. cecilia vega, thanks very much. michael? we turn now to breaking news overnight. china firing missiles near taiwan, the exercises following speaker nancy pelosi's trip there. our foreign correspondent james longman is tracking the latest. good morning, james. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, michael. hours after nancy pelosi left taiwan, china has for the first time launched massive military drills using live fire all around the island. chinese state media showed these pictures, they show beijing launching their missiles directly into waters east, northeast and southwest of the island. taiwanese military saying china

launched 11 ballistic missiles in just a two-hour period. these are long-range weapons capable of traveling hundreds of miles. it's thought these military drills are likely to last three days. some flights are being canceled. commercial shipping had to be rerouted and we're hearing reports of cyberattacks inside taiwan as well. a chinese spokeswoman said they were in response to what she called collusion between the united states and taiwan. this is a self-governing democracy, but china claims it as part of its own and nancy pelosi is the most senior u.s. official to visit since the late 1990s. all this is concerning because it shows just how quickly china can launch these kinds of exercises and it also demonstrates what china might do in the future if it were to launch military action by essentially causing a maritime blockade. rbin? >> all right, james. thanks to you. we stay abroad to a potential nuclear disaster in the making in ukraine. the u.n.'s nuclear chief is warning a nuclear plant, the largest in europe, is, quote, completely out of control.

after russian troops seized it. our senior foreign correspondent ian pannell is in ukraine with the latest. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, robin, that's right. i mean, ukraine is home to a number of key nuclear power plants, few of us can forget the fallout from that chernobyl disaster. with the start of war that was occupied by the russians. today it's been retaken, stabilized and back under ukrainian control. but today it's this other huge nuclear facility here that's caught in the crossfire that's ringing alarm bells around the world. this morning, a nuclear crisis in ukraine. the u.n. sounding the alarm about europe's largest power plant caught in the middle of the war. the head of the international atomic energy agency warning the situation is extremely dangerous. >> physical integrity of the place has not been respected. zaporizhzhia is completely out of control. >> reporter: located in the southeastern city of enerhodar, it was taken by russian troops in early march shortly after the

invasion began. seen here in video posted by the mayor of the city, but while russian troops control the plant, ukrainian staff still run it, contributing to mounting tensions and deteriorating operations. ukraine accusing russia of using it as cover to shell a nearby town. russia accusing ukraine of attacking the plant too. fighting is escalating nearby. in a video released by the ukrainian defense ministry, a drone strike in july targeting russian troops just outside the plant. the u.s. now accusing russia of using the nuclear plant as a human shield. >> russia is now using the plant as a military base to fire at ukrainians knowing that they eycctally ct or ghoot back radioactive waste in storage. >> reporter: well, the u.n. issuing a plea for russia and ukraine to allow international inspectors in to stabilize the

hope that in your ruling that it doesn't end my life here. >> reporter: her defense team is also asking for a lenient sentence, reminding the judge that griner had a medical prescripti f cannis says griner broke the law. they're asking for nine and a half years in prison. at this point all sides have spoken. we expect a verdict and sentencing in just a matter of hours. george? >> maggie rulli, thanks. michael? now to the latest fallout from the u.s. drone strike that killed the leader of al qaeda. the united states has warned about potential retaliation and our mary bruce has more on the taliban's reaction. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, michael. the taliban this morning is weighing how to respond to this strike. you know, since assuming power last year, the government had been hoping for international

recognition but the knowledge now that al zawahiri was hiding in plain sight and how the taliban responds to this now is significantly complicating those aspirations. this morning, the taliban reacting to the u.s. air strike that killed al qaeda leader ayman al zawahiri. group representatives say they are investigating what they call the u.s. claim of his death saying the government and the leadership wasn't aware of what is being claimed nor any trace there. outside his home in kabul, security tight. the balcony where he was killed covered with a tarp. top leadership is said to be holding lengthy dis about how to respond. qaed the death of founder osama bin laden in 2011. now the next man in line is poised to take his place. >> the next al qaeda leader in line is a fellow by the same of saif al adel. he's thought to be in iran, which is really interesting because that presents further complications in terms of his

allegiances, who he works for, why is he in iran. >> reporter: with the movement's leadership in flux, experts say al qaeda is no longer what it was. the real threat now comes from its splinter groups, newer terrorist organizations inspired by them, or broke away in the last decade or so, including isis. >> the threat level from al qaeda in this region, afghanistan and pakistan, actually is quite low, especially compared to other threats and these are threats from al qaeda franchises in somalia, in yemen, parts of northwest syria and subsaharan africa and so forth. >> reporter: now, the white house is vowing to stay vigilant and go after al qaeda terrorists amidst concerns that the talibh street for a little-known company that recently went public but somehow is now worth more on paper than some of the biggest, best-known companies in the world.

phil mickelson have gotten over $100 million just to sign on. so those players have sued the pga. why? because the pga says you cannot have your nine-figure cake and eat it too. for decades he's been one of the most recognizable faces on the pga tour, but phil mickelson, lefty, is joining ten other pro golfers in an antitrust lawsuit against the organization that made many of them household names claiming they were suspended by the pga for their involvement with liv, a saudi-backed tour attempting to rival th it's defite the b ouh faced. >> reporter: liv made a controversial splash into the golf word, offering larger purses than the pga with 48 players competing for $405 million in prize money. the league has been aggressively recruiting pga players to join its ranks offering megadeals. mickelson said to be receiving $200 million just to show up. u.s. open winner dustin johnson reportedly $150 million.

bankruptcy on friday. but then a shocking twist from the family's attorney. >> 12 days ago your attorneys messed up and sent me a digital copy of your entire cell phone with every text message you've sent for the past two years, and when informed did not take any steps to identify it as privileged or protect it in any way. and as of two days ago, it fell free and clear into my presentation, and that's how i know you lied to me when you said you didn't have text messages about sandy hook. did you know that? >> this is your perry mason moment. >> reporter: the attorney also presenting evidence that jones' infowars businesses apparently brought in roughly $800,000 in one day from sales. jones claiming in court that amount was not the norm and that he is, indeed, in financial distress. but earlier this week the judge already admonishing him from the bench. >> you may not tell this jury that you are bankrupt.

all of alex jones' text messages for the last two years. now, remember, this was relevant because the other side had specifically said do you have any text messages that relate to sandy hook that mentioned sandy hook, no, no. have you searched for them? yes, i have. know, look at all these text - messages that are accidentally sent to the other side. so immediately you have now proof that at the very least alex jones has not been telling the truth. >> is that perjury on its face with criminal charges? >> i would say that criminal charges are certainly possible, maybe even likely, but not necessarily inevitable. the prosecutors have to decide whether to bring charges. now, one of the interesting things is does the judge refer a criminal case, meaning say to the prosecutors, i think that you should consider this. it's up to the texas prosecutors. but this sure does seem to fit the definition of perjury which this is an official proceeding. the big question as to whether it becomes the felony is would it have an outcome on the proceeding of the case. >> infowars is still on the air. >> oh, absolutely. alex jones continues to go on and not just talk about some of

the bedtime and more consistent with that and i know we keep talking about george, he got me into meditation. i was getting up early to meditate and it made no sense that i was losing some time sleeping to meditate. so what i've done is i meditate after the show and, boy, do i need meditation after the show a lot of times and also prior to -- prior to -- making sleep a priority -- [ laughter ] >> there you go. >> all such wonderful ideas, i'm so happy to hear these strategies that you're using. first restricting the time you're watching tv in bed, great idea. we want to look at our bed and just crave getting inside and so restricting the time we're in bed to time we're sleeping. second, i love stricter bedtimes. we're so devoted to our alarm clocks and wake-up time if we draw more focus to our bedtime and the time we want to start unwinding for bed then that can again put us in good position and then third meditation. great healthy strategy and actually people who meditate

fall asleep a little faster than people who don't meditate. i love your comments about not restricting your sleep. i hear that all the time. people say i love to get enough sleep but i have to exercise and wake up an hour or two hours early but the dirty secret is when we practice all these health behaviors they all help one another and especially sleep when we make it a priority, we wake up, feel refreshed, want to treat our bodies well and exercise and we want to meditate. finally, prioritizing sunday sleep, i love that. setting yourself up for success, combating the sunday scaries and getting your wind-down routine going will set you up for success for the week ahead. >> the sunday scaries. dr. robbins, thank you so much ment we want to emphasize to a lot of folks this is serious for a lot of people and if you find yourself needing some help please do seek some professional help. all right. thank you, dr. robbins. >> great tips. a little "pop news." did we leave enough time for you? >> i hope so.
