debated the bill saying it'll bring down inflation and save us money abc news reporter m win tells us how opponents of the plan say, it won't work. cinema majority leader chuck schumer did not speculate on when the senate might pass the bill and send it to the house for consideration, but called the legislation a very big deal. the american people are going to learn an unmistakable truth about this proposal. it was written first and foremost with the american people in mind it reduces inflation. it lowers their costs and it fights climate change. saturday's voting comes after arizona senator kirsten cinema the last democratic holdout announced she's ready to move forward after the party leaders agreed to scale back some of their tax proposals the bill which democrats are calling. the inflation reduction act would be the largest investment in fighting climate change in us history and aims to lower health care premiums and prescription costs and would be paid for by

difficult and when abc news, washington no one was shot but police say they got into a shootout with a suspect today in the mission district officers say they returned fire when a man in his 50s. this is in san francisco fled on foot and shot at officers. it all happened just before eight at shotwell between 16th and 17th. suspect hid behind a vehicle and continued to shoot at officers members of the department's tactical unit helped to take that suspect into custody. based on the behavior and what he was engaged in. there will be criminal charges. but at this point we are several hours out from figuring out what they actually are. the suspect was taken to the hospital suffering minor injuries police have not revealed what led to the pursuit a town hall meeting will be held to discuss the police involved shooting within 10 days. the meantime in the east bay four people in oakland were shot one killed during a three-hour span. 35 year old pittsburgh man died

in a drive-by shooting just after three this morning. it happened to the uptown district at 17th and broadway our media partner the bay area news group reports that a man and woman from berkeley were injured in that shooting. they are expected to be okay about three hours earlier and a few blocks away officers heard gunfire and found a man shot at 14th and webster. he was critically wounded investigators say the shootings are not connected. a 17 year old boy died in a crash during a pursuit in vallejo with chp officers just before 1 am yesterday morning the california highway patrol says they tried to pull over the driver of speeding red chevrolet pickup truck. driver refused to stop and began chase that truck eventually crashed officers say the boy who was driving was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the pickup. a 16 year old passenger in the truck was injured. she is expected to recover. with education being a key component in our efforts to build a better bay area.

we focus now on the new school year that is about to begin. this year inflation has made it harder for some families to cover the cost of school supplies abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard shows us how one young woman has spent a decade helping students succeed binders. me notebooks headphones. diana garabay is ready for seventh grade. now that she has the school supplies. she needs to succeed. it's going to be a big help for you. now that school started. yeah a lot of help. yeah. thank you everything from notebooks to rulers and glue sticks are part of stuff the bus a free school supply giveaway at deer valley high school and antioch organized for the past 10 years by 21 year old. so wilson with the help of volunteers coming from a low-income family myself, you know, i i definitely understand.

clarissa organized her first supply giveaway when she was in sixth grade after realizing some classmates didn't have the tools. they needed check it out. we're talking thousands of backpacks. all the school supplies are donated every year for clarissa's goodwill mission parents of families have always been, you know, struggling but that we have noticed an increase in those families. this is really helping a lot hard times with covid and this is really helping keep extra food in our family by giving us backpacks. it is expensive just to buy food is expensive. so supplies all that. they need this year is great. clarissa is now a senior at san diego state university with big plans ahead. i have a strong love for community service and this is something that i want to make a career out of doing she hopes to start a nonprofit. profounding mission to continue helping families during back to school season. yeah. we just want to keep it going. an antioch cornell bernard abc 7 news allows we know yes a new

school year is nearly upon us students in the oakland unified school district head back to class on monday while san jose and san francisco unified schools are back in section next wednesday, august 17th. well moving on to developing news on the largest wildfire burning in california. the so-called mckinney wild fire in siskiyou county near the oregon border is now 30% contained for deaths are being on the fire. peruse a dangerous weather conditions over the next couple of days could make their job a whole lot harder flames has scorched nearly 94 square miles since the fire began seven days ago and more than 7300 people are under evacuation orders or warnings. and not far from the mckinney fire a cluster of wildfires is burning between the communities of syed and happy camp. it's being called the yeti fire the lightning sparked fire started tuesday and has shut down a portion of highway 96. flames have burned more than 12 square miles and there is zero
